One things to watch for in each phase of the game as the Green Bay Packers prepare to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the final preseason game of 2011...

  • Offense: Several receiving options for the Packers have been ruled out for tonight's game as they attempt to rest up for the regular season including Jermichael Finley, James Jones and Randall Cobb. In addition, head coach Mike McCarthy said he may choose to rest Donald Driver as well. Even the starters that will play like Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson won't play for long. That means guys fighting for roster spots, namely Chastin West and Tori Gurley, will get long looks in tonight's game and those even further down the depth chart are hoping to become practices squad worthy at the very least.
  • Defense: It's the final opportunity for some of the players in the defensive backfield to make a lasting impression. Perhaps one roster spot will come down to a choice between Josh Gordy and Pat Lee. They need to show their worth both on defense and special teams. At safety, Brandon Underwood is clinging onto hope that he can be the Packers' fourth safety.
  • Special teams: Rookies like running back Alex Green, tight end D.J. Williams and cornerback Davon House are all good bets to make the roster, but are they good enough to be active on game days in the regular season? They're going to have to contribute on special teams if they want to play on Sundays in the fall, and it would improve their chances to make an impression tonight.

I'd take Gordy over Lee, and Jennings over Underwood -- but, hey, that's my roster...

...and as GM, I'd be making the following speech:

"I'd like to thank Dimitri Nance, Quinn Johnson, Brad Jones, and Jarrett Bush for their efforts and contributions to the Green Bay Packers..."

Good job getting rid of your best Special Teamer & and your only experienced Outside LB in Green Bay...

Glad Ted's at that post

Thanks for this welcome input Brian. I'll be stuck listening to it on radio, if lucky here in frigging Bears country Illinois. Ack! Anyhow ... your insight appreciated as always.
