Packers Use First of 14 Padded Practices

Packers Use First of 14 Padded Practices

Per NFL rules, teams can only have 14 padded practices during the regular season, 11 of which must occur in the first 11 weeks.

The Packers used their first of 14 allotted padded practices on Thursday in preparation for their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

With attention this week focused on when defenders can hit quarterbacks carrying out the read-option, you can bet that was an emphasis at practice.

Rule # 1 ... You can't hit him if you're on the ground.

Rule # 2 ... You can't hit him if you can't catch him.

Rule # 3 ... Kaep isn't too shabby playing as a regular Pro-Set QB either.

Somehow I have that feeling that Mac & Crew are going to out-think themselves in this one.

There is not enough data yet to know whether CK is an effective "traditional" QB. It's possible we will see the Packers play quite a bit of pocket contain defense attempting to force CK to beat them downfield. It would nice to be able to play man coverage since it's doubtful SF's receivers will be able to get separation. However, we know that man means more susceptibility to CK scrambles and it's doubtful the Pack wants Hyde (regardless of how well he has played thus far) exposed in man coverage much. Kind of expect to see Harbough go back to his roots and run the ball a lot in this game.
