Packers trade Trevor Davis to Raiders for a 6th Round Pick

The return specialist was coming off a poor game against the Vikings.

After a poor showing against Minnesota and the team picking up a returner on waivers, the writing was on the wall for Trevor Davis.

The Packers have reportedly traded the return specialist to the Oakland Raiders for a 6th round pick.

Montgomery did a stupid thing and got traded. Whitehead did a stupid thing and got cut.

Davis is a vet returner. If he’s too stupid to know he can’t signal a fair catch and then block ....we’re better off without him. You can’t win with stupid people doing stupid things.

I assume they may move Lazard up? I guess the new CB from KC is suddenly going to return punts & kicks? Not sure what the plan is?

Suddenly? That’s been his primary role since he joined the league

Classic case of strong preseason followed by actual competition flop.

More probable that it gets Lazard onto the 53.

Unless I missed something, Lazard is on the 53. He was signed from the PS when Sternberger was placed on IR. This does increase the likelyhood he remains there.

Sounds like Tremon Smith will be returning kicks and manning special teams with his speed. Trevor Davis looked good in shorts but never did a damn thing on the field.

A 6th round pick for a limited player is a great score on the trade. The Raiders will be middle of the pack in the draft so the 6th becomes a trade up package pick!

A low #5 if the Raiders stay the course but Gruden's group may surprise some people. They are playing as a team.

Smith was pretty deadly for the Chefs last year. He is definitely an upgrade as a returner. Davis has never been impressive... never... ever...

In all fairness , there have been no opportunities for T. Davis to do anything.

Really??? Seems to me like he had a perfect opportunity on Sunday to make a great special teams play. But what did he do instead?

Commit a penalty.

And not only did he commit a penalty, but he tried to signal fair catch, and then went to block for the real returner. That isn't trickery... it's cheating. We are not the Patriots.

What we need is a gunner that can get down the field when JK Scott kicks the ball 50 yards. The Vikings returned them for both 10 and 15 yards I believe. Unacceptable!!!!

A 6th round pick for Trevor Davis is a good trade. Davis has speed but he just didn't apply himself to his skill set once the regular season started. I don't think the Packers will have any problems replacing him on the kick return team. Another Smith joins the Packers that should be an upgrade from Trevor Davis. Good move by the Packers.

Before the preseason game against the Raiders many thought that Davis was going to get cut. I am thinking that getting a 6th rounder for him when he only has 1 year left on his contract and was likely not going to be in our long term plans is a pretty good move on Gute's part.

As TGR mentioned, Davis was suppose to take Janis place in ST as a gunner. That was a flat out misjudgement on the Packers part. It happens. Packers still have not replace Janis on either side, and it shows in the return cover phase of both games. Not surprised that both young WR were moved to the active roster, even with the injury to ESB the hand writing was on the wall for Davis. Gute once again shows why he is a very good GM, finding a place for a good guy to get second chance to showcase his skill set. Somehow, Gute seems to remember that these are people and not mere pieces on some chess board. My kind of GM.

The staff reported that Davis was a very good gunner and was doing better as a WR. But yes, he did make some boneheaded plays on STs. Besides, I don’t think that MLF values having as many WRs as MM did last year. An extra CB who can play STs well is a much better situation to be in down the road. The draft pick is a bonus.

When healthy yes, and with Janis a very dangerous gunner. But Janis was cut because he was a one positional player in a league that does not have that luxury anymore. Without a Janis (a blue chip ST player) on the other end, Davis was exposed, and the rest is history.

Way to go Gutekunst!! I see moving on from the often-injured Davis to an explosive return man in Smith is another upgrade to the special teams. Hopefully it turns out to be another game changing move made by the management at 1265. Go Pack Go!

Did any Packer fan feel confident with Davis as a returner?

Good move by Gutekunst and he somehow walks away with another draft pick for next year, for a guy who he could have easily cut at roster cut downs. Remarkable job by our GM. He keeps building his team, with qualified, dynamic talent, while adding draft assets along the way. Snapping up the NFL's #4 KR with a waiver claim was spot on. I have enormous respect for the work Brian Gutekunst is doing for our Packers. He's a tireless worker, and the talent added and the timing of his additions seem to prove that.

I liked Davis and I wish they would have used Him in the offense more but you know what, they wouldn’t have re-signed him in the off-season anyway. May as well get some compensation for him now. Load up on those draft picks Gute!

As long as Smith can return kicks, I like the upside of Lazard over Davis as a WR anyways.
