Packers to Hire Matt LaFleur as Head Coach

The Green Bay Packers have made the first hire in the 2019 hiring cycle.

Breaking...

According to ESPN's Rob Demovsky and Adam Schefter, the Packers are about to hire Titan's offensive Coordinator Matt LaFleur as it's next head coach. LaFleur comes from the Mike Shanahan coaching tree, which produced current hotshot head coaches like the Rams' Sean McVay and the 49ers' Kyle Shanahan.

LaFleur, 39, was an offensive assistant with Houston; quarterbacks coach with Washington and Atlanta; offensive coordinator with the Rams and Titans, and now HEAD C0ACH OF YOUR GREEN BAY PACKERS!!!

...

According to Rob Demovsky, the Packers are also expected to retain Defensive Coordinator Mike Pettine and his staff.

I have zero preconceived notions on this purported hire.

Coaching is one of those things where it's all about the right place at the right time. I'll eagerly await the assembling of his staff, OTAs and Training Camp to see what kind of ship he'll run. No question there will be some bumps along the way, it's Rodgers' first ever change of offense.

I'm optimistic for the new coaching staff until proven otherwise. The only thing I wish for is he puts Rodgers in check and gets him back to a conscientious, methodical, and deliberate style of play within the structure of the offense. Take charge, coach.

" zero preconceived notions"

I am very interested in the fact the Henry won AFC player of the month for Dec. To me that is a big deal. This team BADLY needs balance on offense.

Also, Marriota and Gabbert had completion percentages in the upper 60s. Those guys are not on anyone's list of great QBs. If he can make those dudes efficient, I think he can put together some nice stuff for Rodgers.

Additionally, listing to him talk, he's articulate and honest. Listen to this.

Google titansonline.com matt-lafleur-you-have-to-trust-the-process

So much more refreshing than MM pad level BS. Rodgers is going to resonate with Matt LaFleur. How can we blame Rodgers for tuning out MM. I tuned him out 3 years ago and I only hear him on video 10 minutes a week.

The thing is.. that "pad level bs" is about the most straight forward, honest football talk you can get from a coach. It's not sexy.. but level, leverage, and technique are what make good football players.

It's not actual Pad Level that is BS. It's using it a canned response over and over again, and as a diversion to the actual question.

I'll second that.

It's a copycat league and the Packers hopped right on the bandwagon. Good for them--they didn't dally around and made what they thought was the best decision. Now they can get a head start on turning this into a competitive team once again. I'll be interested to see how this hiring affects free agent and draft priorities.

I dont get this "bandwagon hopping". Coaching is dependent on human beings personalities, and good offense isnt a trend. People can still tailor scheme to players and innovate, not just hand out textbooks.

Not me...I hope he wants to keep Pettine because that's who HE wants as his DC, not because it was a condition. The last time Murphy laid down conditions we ended up with a "Lame Duck" HC who was fired before the season even ended.

I wanted Fitz, but I like this SO MUCH MORE than McDuechebag or Monken. Fleur had baggage, notably his lack of O success in TEN. But they were absolutely destroyed by injury and still almostafr the playoffs. Plus, he committed to Henry as the season rolled on.

Dude got Goff right. That's not nothing.

Yes, it matters. The OC will be contributing major parts.of the game plan, running a big part of the installations and managing the day to day for the position coaches. It's an big job. Also if Philbin is still Assistant HC he'll likely be helping with game time management.

Good god I hope they let Philbin walk.

We need to clear out all the Rodgers security blankets and yes men.

Priority #1 needs to be getting Rodgers right again. I know some people here think that means coddling him and trying to keep him happy and comfortable, but He needs nudged out of his comfort zone, and reminded that he's a player, who answers to coaches.

I want this head coach to succeed. I believe he needs to surround himself with his guys, not Rodger's.

Originally Shannahan started out in Denver under Dan Reeves before being hired in Oakland by Al Davis. After being fired and feuding with Davis, he then spent 4 years coordinating offenses for George Siefert in San Fran . This is where he picked up the west coast system and took it back to Denver in 95 as HC after winning a SB in 94 using it with San Fran as their OC. I'm talking about Mike Shannahan who then passed his knowledge to his son Kyle. LaFleur has most recently worked under McVay, Vrabel, Shannahan, and Jay Gruden another west coast guy and Jon Gruden's brother. McVay and Kyle Shannahan have both worked under Jay Gruden recently as well. The west coast offense runs deep with LaFleur.

Actual West Coast Offense.

Not the MM Mouse Davis Run and Shoot with West Coast terminology but you forget to call run plays or when you do the QB just changes the play to a 50 yard bomb and under throws it by 10 yards.

I like the pedigree with player development. I have no real feel for his play calling or schematic abilities.

If it is true that he may keep Philbin, the question becomes, for me, what did Philbin bring to the table this year and why was it seemingly so underwhelming? Was he constrained by what the MM system had become, by Rodgers or what? Perhaps Philbin needs a viable direction to unlock his value? On the other hand, perhaps Philbin will be an obstacle to significant change and is more of a security blanket for some one. Not at all sure about his value or otherwise moving forward.

Pettine’s retention is the blessing. One season with an inexperienced O decimated by injuries and with glaring gaps and turnover at some positions is not enough to form a rational view. I respect what he did with, by the end, virtually no one. What can he do with a rush etc and some help will take another season to determine and, in doing so, allow the rookies some continuity in their development rather than a significant reset.

Overall, this is a risk. Betting on unproven potential beyond seeming player development. The alternative was a more proven candidate, none of whom excited me.

McD is someone I am just not sure would work in GB. I remember what he did in Denver when given the reins. He may need a BB to constrain his excesses. At the very least, I have doubts over his transition to HC that elevate his risk factor too.

So here we go. Fingers crossed this is a step in the right direction: only time will tell.

To take the negative approach, one could look at this as being Murphy and co taking the easy option. Hire a QB guru and keep the popular Philbin and the leadership’s recently hired incumbent DC even if it means going with a candidate whose play calling and offensive design are largely unproven.

I don’t know if the above is the case. I am not an expert on LaFleur by any means. It just seems that no one has pointed out what seems to be an equally plausible explanation as the general assumption shaping this thread, especially if, like me, one has little faith in Murphy,

Dash I'm happy as hell that it looks like Pettine will be back and I thought you would be too, even if it wasn't a pairing with Rex. LaFleur has no reason to keep Zook around as special teams was just awful. The defense improve substantially in several areas under Pettine and should continue to get even better.

I'm effing around mostly on this having a great time Rak. I did make a post on it just a bit ago but in all seriousness I am extremely happy that Pettine is staying if this is true. I'll give LeFleur a chance since he loves Tim Boyle. I do feel bad for Old School though. His theory appears to have not come true.

Yeah, this really caught me by surprise, no doubt. I still think Philbin had a much better resume, but then again, I thought we should have drafted Lamar Jackson last year and kept Nelson and unloaded Cobb.

So Gutekunst and I don't always think alike.

Best of luck to LaFleur. People aren't going to be happy if we miss the playoffs a 3rd straight year, and Gutekunst's stewardship could be a short one if this doesn't work out fairly quickly.

Old School, he’ll have at least a one year honeymoon to show that the Packers are trending back in the right direction, especially given the current state of our roster. I hope his S&C staff can help keep the players healthy and not strain our tenuous depth.

This is a marriage. Full of magic and knowledge. I think Murphy did an excellent job. Your getting Pettine back. Your getting someone who can help Rodgers. I feel sad for all of you that think you know better. You put your own fantasy ahead of common sense. The packers had don Capers. Two losing seasons. Didn't beat a division team this year. Had problems between MM and Rodgers. This guy is not Darth Vadar. He's had success everywhere. It's his time. Move -on!

I never asked but does LeFleur have a degree in psychology or psychiatry? That might have been the one thing that put him over the top. Someone check into that for me. Thanks

Going all the way back to Dash’s remark about keeping Pettine’s staff meaning Zook would be retained:

As far as I understand it, DCs generally are not responsible for the ST coordinator and ST play. I certainly did not understand Pettine to be in GB.

As such, I don’t see any remark that would suggest that Zook or his staff are part of the future plans. Personally, I am thankful for that. We need a complete clear out in that area in my view.

I wonder what Packer fans were saying when Lombardi was hired?
It's tough to assess these assistants as potential head coaches, I hope the front office received a lot of sincere and insightful references from players and coaches.
That LaFleur was hired so quickly may be a good sign that his overall package of attributes was impressive, including his personal presence and his plans for Packers success.
Perhaps he could have had more experience as an offensive coordinator, but then again, maybe the time to hire him was now.
For whatever reasons, at least for now, I'm excited about LaFleur and the future of the Packers.
Perhaps some offensive innovation is on the way; more of a run game; a leader who is firmly in charge but can also relate to the players with a measure of flexibility; someone not threatened by Pettine remaining, or too egotistical about picking his own defensive coordinator...
We'll see, but I'm hopeful.

Whoever the Packers appointed was going to have his detractors but I think its a pretty good hire. Won't claim to be an expert on him by any means but he worked with Matt Ryan and Jared Goff during good years for them.

I wasn't really for or against any of the candidates, though had obvious reservations about McDaniels given what went on with the Colts. Keeping Pettine is a good move and with a solid draft and some moves in free agency, I'm optimistic.

One thing I will say, the Packers Front Office haven't gone safe or conservative with this choice. They've picked a promising offensive-minded coach and that to me is intriguing.

I think your comment, Altered Idol, reflects a lot of what I'm thinking and feeling. Never heard of LaFleur before, but he seems like one of the up-and-comers with good results in prior positions as an assistant.
It's interesting that he has seemingly worked well with Ryan and Goff in avant-garde passing offenses, yet also likes the run. Presumably, he'll call more passes with the Packers than with the Titans, but it seems we would do well with more emphasis on the run game.
I'm curious about Trent Dilfer's comment that seems to say LaFleur is much the way McCarthy used to be. I wonder what that means?

I think McD has as many questions about his personality and temperament as LaFleur and others have about their overall head coaching capabilities. I do not see McD as a sure bet to make the next step again, particularly without a dominant leader (elsewhere owner).

There were questions about all the candidates except those who were underwhelming retreads in my view. No idea if we made the right choice or an internally easy one. But I have no reason to point to to say we did not.

Here is to hoping for new ideas and galvanizing leadership! Go LaFleur: Go Pack Go!

I'd like to see the Packers draft a scatback like Tarik Cohen and Darren Sproles to help in the backfield and with kick returns. It seems we rarely, if ever have, this kind of shifty speedster to add excitement and yardage to our teams.
Anyone remember Terry Metcalf?
A waterbug scatback to go along with a power runner in Jamaal Williams, both of them complementing a rising star in Aaron Jones -- sounds scintillating!

Huge fan of Aaron Jones, but somehow he doesn't seem to fit the profile of scatback. I'm hoping for stardom from him next season, but he doesn't seem to have quite the quick elusiveness that I'm looking for.
To me, a scatback is likely even a little smaller, and is a little more like lightning. That kind of guy could also be a wide receiver, such as Taylor Gabriel.

I am not so sure about a scat back. I am just hopeful that we use Williams and Jones effectively. Williams particularly is a good receiving back in my view.

We do need a kick returner. If we can find a good one who can stay healthy I would take him whether he plays RB, CB, WR or whatever. Given that I have a low expectation of the chance of that player becoming a starter outside special teams, what his notional position is seems unimportant in comparison to talent and durability.

The offense in NE has been about the same since Belicheck took over. Remember how everyone thought Charlie Weis was the greatest offensive mind ever because of NE's offensive success? Notice how the NE offense didn't miss a beat when McDaniels went to Denver...and how O'Brien led them to team records in offense while McDaniels was gone. He's not the reason that offense is so potent. If he leaves this year or somewhere down the road, that offense will be just fine without him.

Nick, I think it was the late John Kirk who said to watch for the word "fit". I think he was probably dead on with this. I agree McDaniels clearly had the best results out of them all but the Packers were looking for the perfect clean cut young guy fit for Green Bay. LaFleur was the guy it seems. McDaniels was not the image and fit GB top brass was looking for. He's perceived as a rebel with a bad "tone" that can be a troublemakers plus he wears a visor meaning he's trying to hide something. I only wish I could hear what Kirk's final take on this was. Sad he left before the big one. Why did he leave? WTF happened or who pissed him off?

Now that the new coach is hired I hope he can bring success back to Green Bay. Matt LaFleur is a solid choice as were others that interviewed for the HC job. I was a little surprised at the choice, but not disappointed. Will be interesting to see the other changes, if any, at the coaching positions. He must have made a lasting impression to be hired without offering any second interviews to the other candidates. I wish him nothing but the best as the new coach of the Green Bay Packers.

As I said on another site -

philcodean says:
January 7, 2019 at 7:05 pm Rodger’s needs fixing

You can say that Rodgers needs fixing – I think the whole offense needs fixing. I would hope that Lafleur keeps the Defenive co-ordinator and whomever else on that side of the ball that is deemed worthy after review. I would hope that the Special teams bunch is retooled from scratch and the all of the Offensive guys are set free with only those that fit Lafleurs eye are brought back. Time for AR to trust and run the system – much like Favre was forced to do under McCarthy. For you guys dumping on the Titans success – Mariota was a banddaid and can not play through pain. McCarthy had a horrible season with the 49ers the year before joining the Pack – that is all water under the bridge – hopefully Lafleur will be given some guidance and enough free rein to have the type of staff that he needs to change things around – and by keeping the D staff together it will be one thing less to have a big worry about. IMHO

I don’t know much about this guy, I’m just glad it’s not Philbin. He has to be better thanMM in his last 2 years.

I really don’t understand all the Pettine love, he’s OK but not any better than a lot of other candidates. Would hate it if they retained Joe Whitt, though. DBs seem to regress after a couple of years of his coaching. And Zook? Fahgettaboutit!

You must have missed all that injury stuff...and an amazing lack of quality depth on the D.

Most of the D ended up being street guys...and Pettine still held the D together with duct tape and bailer wire until the Detroit game.

Keeping Pettine and the defensive staff means it's not a total rebuild. Gives the defense a chance to grow on 2018 rather than learning a 3rd scheme in 3 years. If they don't get better, nobody says they have to keep that defensive staff.

Re: Joe Whitt Jr., all you need to know about him:

1) Tramon Williams (UDFA)
2) Sam Shields (UDFA)
3) Ladarius Gunter, as a starter, due to injury.. just barely holding it together against some top flight WR's... for like 4 games.

3) Charles Woodson says he's the finest DB coach he's ever been coached by.

I have the same feeling for LaFleur as I did for another up and coming wunderkind who had less than stellar OC team stats coming to 1265 Lombardi.

I recall thinking "Mike McCarthy? Wasn't he some TE assistant for Rhodes for a year?"

That worked out rather well...

If he is truly keeping Pettine, he's got a shot to get er done, especially if Gute does too.

Lombardi was the NY Giants OC for their 1956 NFL Championship team and for their 1958 Team which lost in OT to Unitas and the Colts. The Giants offense included Chuck Connerly, Frank Gifford and Alex Webster. For that era they were one of the best offenses in the league. Those Giant team also had a great defense coached by Tom Landry.

Lombardi was considered an excellent but under rated coach and to some extent he faced discrimination because he was Italian. Fortunately the Packers hired him anyway. Thanks, Since ‘61

"LaFleur will have say over his coaching staff in Green Bay. However, an ESPN source indicated that he would like to keep defensive coordinator Mike Pettine on for next season. "

Maybe that helped him get the job. He certainly appears qualified and it would be interesting to know who he may have mentioned as his possible OC and/or QB coach candidates.

"Weak pedigree"? He cut his QB coaching teeth under multiple SB-winning coach Mike Shanahan in Washington, and has worked alongside hot coaches Kyle Shanahan in Atlanta and Sean McVay in LA.

"So-so QBs"? He coached Kirk Cousins into a pretty good run in Washington. He coached Matt Ryan to his MVP season and turned around Jared Goff's career in LA. And after a slow start, he had Mariota playing with better stats than Rodgers in his last ten games — with garbage at WR.

I get that some people want to hate whatever guy got hired just because. But seriously, at least base your opinion on actual facts. LaFleur is a very competent offensive coach who has done great work in every position he's held, and every bit deserving of his shot at a HC position.

I love this hire and can't wait to see what he does with Rodgers.

This is going to be a challenge for a 39 year old LaFleur trying to reign in a 35 year old QB in Rodgers to get this offense going at the top of the league again...but at this point any change from an MM coached offense and team is a welcomed change in Green Bay for next season. Keeping Pettine was also a sound move as the defense will build on what he installed this season and should be improved with healthy returnees and draft picks. It looks like the Packers were able to hire the HC they wanted the most before someone else did so it’s all positive in turning this team around for next season.

Okay, so what happened to all the talk of needing a talking bicep for a coach, someone to get tough on these slackers who won't play hurt, and most importantly hold people accountable? Has Coach Matt suddenly filled that void, or are we all so desperate for a respite (I like that, desperate for a respite - watch Riprock try to steal it) that it feels good to be excited about this team again.

Just a few weeks ago we were up to our eyeballs in posts about how McFatty/McMumbles/McPickYourInsult had completely lost the team due to his intellectual laziness, stubborn nature, and player-friendly style. Bowling in training camp? Pfft. Where all you Oklahoma Drill guys hanging out tonight? What say you?

Hiring LaFleur is a bit of a surprise for me especially this rapidly. However, I like the fact that the Packers have selected an up and comer and someone not much older than AR.

I think LaFleur and AR will relate well with each other. Keeping Pettine makes sense since he can handle the defensive side while LaFluer stays focused on the offense. Hopefully LaFleur can bring in a solid ST coach and a real WR coach and RB coach. Our OL coach is fine but LaFluer may want to make a change there as well.

I wish him the best of luck. Go Pack Go!

Its surprising to me how many people that commented seemingly didnt even do a quick background check on the guy.

He was Falcons QB coach in 2016. The same year Matt Ryan was MVP, OPOY and led the NFL in passer rating. 38 tds and 7 picks in 2016. He was gone in 2017 when Ryan went for 20 TDs and 12 picks.

He was Rams OC in 2017 and Goff became a star. They averaged more than DOUBLE the amount of YPG on offense in 2017 than they had without him in 2016.

He's 39 years old and will FINALLY update the playbook to a state of the art level. Exactly what we needed. I was surprised by the hiring at first but Google is very useful guys.

Edit: I forgot to mention he was Notre Dames QB coach in 2014, so he should have Kizer looking way better the next time we see him. Hopefully just in pre season. Mccarthy couldnt/didnt develop shit QB wise. He drafted Hundley as his little project QB just because he wanted a QB to coach because Rodgers was self made. Ive never seen a QB in a Packers uniform less prepared than Hundley looked. Not even Seneca Wallace.

Rodgers wasn't self made. All any reasonable football fan has to do is look at Rodgers throwing mechanics in 2005 and compare them to 2006 or 2007. Completely different delivery. SEcond, if you think Mike McCarthy was running the drafts, you haven't paid attention for the last 13 years. MM didn't draft Hundley. Most observers realized that MM was subtly complaining about the derth of talent in his QB room beyond QB1 the last few years. MM deflected questions about Hundley's readiness by boldly stating that he's QB2, he's what we have, so he's ready. Most realized it was a thinly veiled jab at the fact he had no choice but to run with Hundley as he was all he has been given.

I agree about the mechanics, I disagree with who is responsible for the difference. I've paid attention to the drafts - oh boy have I ever dont you worry. But HC's sometimes are given the green light to make one of their own picks in later rounds (Hundley was a 5th I believe), and I always viewed Hundley as a Mccarthy pick. A pick that was OK'd so he could have his QB side project because he enjoyed coaching up a QB more than Rodgers would have welcomed once he figured he'd put it ALL together. (Which apparently indeed has been somewhat of a problem with Aaron)

There was that one preseason I believe 2016 where Callahan outplayed Hundley. And they went with Hundley because of the investment I guess. 2017 preseason Taysom Hill was clearly the best QB2 on the field for the Packers. Shit it was fun to watch that kid play. Taysom Hill couldnt have done MORE to make that team and he didnt. And it was a mistake. Now whether or not those 2 kids not making the roster was mostly Mccarthys call or not is unclear. But if he was the reason for Rodgers fine tuning shouldnt he bang the table for a superior QB2? Or did he not do that because Hundley was his failure he would never hone up to?

MITM Ted Thompson was responsible for forming 53 roster as today is Brian Gutekunst, not HC, position coiaches etc. THAT JOB IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT JOBS GM HAS!

Of course he can listen HC in case he has doubts between 2 or more players, but decision (and responsibility) is on GM, not HC.

Regarding Brett Hundley and MM, you have to know that MM was so pissed of with TT decision to cut Taysom Hill that he was shouting on TT (reported from several sources)...

I know here are many of Mike McCarthy haters. I just respect his record and what he did while he was Packers HC. I admit I do not know that much to be critics on his football work, but as leader of the men and face of franchise he did excellent job.

And he still have top 5 NFL all time record (win lose ratio!).

And, regarding Aaron, when Aaron is coached (and when he let to be coached) Aaron is one of the funniest QB to watch and enjoy. When he is acting like diva (as he did this season) Packers has 6-9-1 record...

In my opinion, the Packers should cut bait with Kizer ASAP, sign a legitimate back up QB - and by that I mean a QB with some years under his belt, who has won some games, and preferably, worked in more than one offense. I don't believe Kizer can win games for the Packers if his number gets called. We need a guy who can go .500 or better for 4-6 games if needed.

Yes, Boyle should be coached up. He stands tall in the pocket and keeps his composure, and you've got to like that from a very young, UDFA QB. The pro game doesn't look too big for him. You also have to like the way the ball leaves his hand, it's always a tight, pretty spiral. HOWEVER, his accuracy needs a lot of work. A lot. He puts the ball in the general vicinity or WRs, not to a precise point. He's got NFL arm strength, but not NFL accuracy at this point. I still think he shows potential- more so than Kizer IMO, but that accuracy needs to show improvement or he can't win in the NFL.

I like Boyle a lot and have high hopes for him eventually. But let's not get carried away as there are plenty of QB's who look good during preseason and camp, that's how they make the team. Then when the actual games start it's a different story. Boyle was a highly recruited prospect coming out of H.S. but had a pretty lackluster college career, so there must be a few reasons for that. I really hope LaFleur can coach him up and get him playing solid ball with confidence, but I'm not ready to throw all my eggs in that hat yet.

Boyle's receivers at directional Kentucky were atrocious, I watched a game where there had to be 7-8 drops. I am reading he is having issues with the offense (McCarthy's) and having real issues reading defenses. Great arm talent though.

Where are you reading that? It would be interesting to read it too.

Thank you setting the record straight on Boyle's college career Bure. Yes, those receivers he had were a joke. Boyle was one of the top rated qb's in the nation coming out of high school. I've never seen arm strength like his other than maybe Favre. The thing that separates him from all the others is his ability to throw one of the most accurate deep balls almost every single time. That's why MVS shined in the preseason and made the team. It was due to Boyle getting him the ball on the dime deeper down the field. That all went away for the most part when playing with Rodgers. Rodgers does not have the arm strength or accuracy down the field like Boyle has. It's just true like it or not.

Oppy gets 4 dislikes for praising Boyle? I get 37 dislikes for misspelling LaFleur? What the hell is wrong with some of you people here.

As for the new LaFleur/Boyle relationship goes, I like what I am hearing so far. Now people might know I am a Boyleist but I also realize Boyle is not a finished product. He did have a slight issue with accuracy at times but that I believe was mostly due to inferior receivers he had in college. You see him working with J'Mon Moore, Kumerow and MVS this preseason and he looked like the no 1 pick in the draft. Exciting times ahead for Boyle.

I like Boyle as an NFL prospect. I can't find evidence that he was a highly recruited player coming out of High School. He got offers from UConn, Boston College, Florida, UMass, Pitt., and Syracuse. So he was recruited, but when someone writes highly recruited, I think Bama and the like. He wasn't really in that league. Looks like he was a 3 star recruit?

My humble opinion is that any guy would be better than Josh McDaniels, but this pick I consider a very good pick. Young guy with lot of energy and, I believe, can be very successful.

Good hire, I like it!

I think Murphy may have got this one right. I like his choice. Lafleur will do well in GB!

Agrip

I hope you are correct and I hope Dilfer is wrong and LaFleau is NOT a young McCarthy. I hope they Practice football fundamentals, not paintball and bowling.

The young, hungry MM was good. I’d be happy with that.

I think TT ground MM down.

Unfortunately, the hungry MM ate too much in WI and he went the way of Eddie Lacy.

So this a ballsy call. But it's a calculated and exciting risk. This dude has a good CV and seems to have the right attitude. I like the call and whatever it brings, I fully support it. Good Luck Coach LaFleur. GPG!

I like it! So glad it's not McDaniels or Philbin. Maybe we can luck into getting Monken at OC. Cignetti has to go. Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to replace VanPelt with the guy who coached Eli Manning during the worst year of his career? Get Van Pelt back.(He was a cerebral QB. If he had had Todd Collins's physical tools to go with the VanPelt brain he might have been something as a QB) or some other former QB like Kingsbury.

Bring back Janis and play him at his natural position -- DB. His SP gunner skills and instincts make it clear he was always out of position as a receiver. A natural born DB.

WR was too complicated for Janis how on earth could he be a DB? He was an elite gunner and athlete. Gunner is easy run really fast and tackle or touch the guy with the football. DB requires even more thought than WR. Janis should have been utilized by MM saying run a go route and take the top off a defense. Rodgers throw the ball if Janis beats his man with speed if not see who he opened up underneath and get the ball to them.

Late to the party, but after reading up on LaFleur, on paper at least he seems like he can be the guy to get things done. He wasn't my first choice. Flores out of New England was.

I read that in the interview with LaFleur, he stated that Pettine was on his list for DC. Now did he just say that to better his chances to get the gig in GB? Or was he being honest in that Pettine is a guy he wanted? Could be a bit of both. I like the idea that Pettine will stay, as he, being a head coach before, can help LaFleur ease into that part of the job. And Pettine did a good job this season with not a lot of players to work with towards the end.

I read this morning that LaFleur could keep Philbin on the staff. Big mistake IMHO. Cut bait with anything from the previous offense. Wipe the offensive slate clean so you can make the offense your own.

Fire Zook. Keep Campen. Fire the entire Strength and Conditioning department from top to bottom. Let Pettine hire the people he wants.

LaFleur looks to be a very good fit for the Packers. Hoping for great success in the near future! Go Pack!

You get a thumb up for wanting to fire the strength and conditioning folks alone. I have been asking why consistent decimation over successive seasons hasn’t brought them into focus for a long time.

Will be interesting to see is if he has pieces for his system or if he really cleans house. Seem to be set at rb but does he favor big, small , or a combo of WRS. I think this hire could help Cobb

I’m keenly interested in the staff he assembles, as his hires will go a long way towards determining how successful he’ll be as a head coach. Maybe just as important as the players he has to work with.

Good health will be the biggest aid to Cobb. He showed he is still a very good WR against Chi in game 1. Aka his 1 healthy game.
