Packers TE D.J. Williams Tweaks Hamstring, PUP Injury Updates

The Green Bay Packers were down another tight end at Thursday's practice.

Joining Jermichael Finley (AC joint) among those missing at the position was second-year tight end D.J. Williams, who Packers coach Mike McCarthy said after practice tweaked his hamstring during a 7-on-7 period Wednesday. Tom Crabtree and Ryan Taylor served as the team's two tight ends Thursday.

McCarthy called Williams' injury another "setback" at the position, and said that the 24-year-old had never suffered a hamstring injury before. If recovered, Williams would be expected to take a major of snaps in Houston Sunday night if Finley can't go.

On that front, McCarthy again reiterated that Finley, receiver Greg Jennings (groin) and nose tackle B.J. Raji (ankle) would each be given all the way up until game time Sunday before the team makes a decision on whether or not they will play. None of the three practiced Thursday and likely won't Friday.

Jennings has missed the better part of the last three games because of a nagging groin injury. In Indianapolis, Raji suffered another ankle sprain and Finley slightly dislocated his AC joint.

In other injury news, McCarthy told the local media that linebacker Frank Zombo (hamstring) and tight end Andrew Quarless (knee) are getting close to coming back, but tackle Derek Sherrod (leg) may still be a little further out. All three players are currently on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Zombo hurt his hamstring before training camp and never recovered in time to see any work this August, Quarless has been on the shelf since tearing both his ACL and MCL during the Packers win over the New York Giants in December of 2011 and Sherrod broke his leg during a loss in Kansas City.

After Week 6, players on the PUP list can practice over a three-week span without counting against the active roster's 53-man limit. At the end of the three weeks, Green Bay will have to decide whether to activate the players to the 53-man roster, place on IR or cut altogether.
