Packers Stock Report Preseason Week 2

Today we look at the Packers Midterm Preseason Stock Report.

With the preseason halfway in the books, we still have not learned all that much about the 2019 Green Bay Packers.  Right now, we are making any judgments on the Packers based on limited practice and game reps.  Needless to say, neither of these evaluations have been very flattering.

These last two preseason contests have not given me anything to think that the 2019 Green Bay Packers are going to be any better than the 2017 and 2018 Green Bay Packers.

The reason for this is simply because we are at the point where we cannot put a whole lot of weight into the preseason.  The new CBA has limited what can be done in terms of practice time and pad work and as a result, players are more concerned with staying healthy in training camp and preseason games rather than getting a lot of in-game reps before the start of the regular season.

The reality is that the players need to focus on honing their technique and getting their optimal amount of practice reps in order to get them ready for the regular season.  Once the optimal amount of practice reps are achieved, the starting units can then focus on accumulating enough game reps during the first few regular-season games to get them sharp for the remainder of the regular season and potential postseason run.

With this in mind, the individual performances I will highlight in my stock report will mostly be regarding potential rotational players on the Packers 53 man roster:

Packers Stocks Trending Upward:

1. Darrius Shepherd:

Shepherd has made the most of his extended playing time both at wide receiver and on special teams this preseason.  He has shown an ability to be an asset in the return game by making positive plays while showing he could potentially fill the final wide receiver spot on this roster by catching the ball and finding the endzone whenever he is given the opportunity.

2. Curtis Bolton:

Curtis Bolton provided the spirit and energy needed on this Packers defense on Thursday night.  During a contest that had limited bright spots, Bolton was aggressive and showed the ability to make momentum-shifting plays.  With Oren Burks in all likelihood done for the season, the Packers will be looking for some rotational depth at the linebacker position and Bolton will hope to continue his standout play and fill one of those spots.

3. Tony Brown:

Tony Brown's progression since the Packers have broke training camp has been one of the brighter spots during this preseason.  Brown has developed nicely in his second season in Mike Pettine's system and has brought the highlights from the practice field to the bright lights of Lambeau Field thus far.  Brown has shown the ability to lock down receivers in one on one coverage and make plays on the ball.  Hopefully, his improved play will continue during the regular season and he can be depended upon this year.

4. Allen Lazard:

Although I don't see a fit for Lazard on the Packers 53 man roster in 2019, I have always been a fan of his big-play ability dating back to his days starring at Iowa St.  Lazard has the big-play ability and the frame of a reliable target who can snag every ball that comes his way.  It was nice to see Lazard standout and make big plays on a night where the offense was vertically challenged.

Stocks Trending Downward:

1. Preseason Football:

A lot of you fans absolutely can't get enough of the preseason and that's fine, we all have our things about football that we enjoy, but to be honest, the preseason does not provide any of those feelings of excitement for me.  Let's face it, the preseason is a necessary evil that we have to deal with in order to determine how the bottom half of the roster will ultimately shake out.  The games are absolutely brutal to watch because of inconsistent play, awful officiating, missed tackles, and an ungodly amount of penalties.  At this point, I would be totally ok with trading two preseason games for some more padded practices and in-squad scrimmages.  (Soap Box Over)

2. Tackling:

Tackling has been a league-wide epidemic, but I felt that it was particularly bad yet again on Thursday night for the Packers.  Although the missed tackle number went down from around 24 in week 1 to 19 in week 2, this is still an atrocious display that needs to be cut in half this week.

3. The Backup Quarterback Situation:

I think at this point we have seen enough of both DeShone Kizer and Tim Boyle to know that neither of them are an acceptable solution at the backup quarterback position for the Packers.  To be honest, I don't think either of them are an adequate backup quarterback in this league.  They are both very limited in what they can do and have not proven that they can consistently make basic throws in game situations.  With Aaron Rodgers in the twilight of his career coupled with the fact that he has always been injury-prone, it is essential that the Packers scour the market and look to upgrade the backup quarterback position immediately.

I pretty much agree on everything you said. Perhaps they can stash Lazard on the taxi squad. Shepherd is a must for the 53 man squad. The backup QB's will not win any games if Rodgers is out. Agree with looking for another veteran backup QB. The only thing I might add is hamstring and calf injuries. How can the Pack prevent more of these? And I am done with four preseason games. Drop two. Go to 18 games. Increase squad to 60 players.

I can’t agree with the idea of letting good players walk away for nothing. One mark of a good GM is figuring out how to use a surplus of talent at one position to improve the team overall.

If he can do it against the ones of a decent D. He is a giant playing against scrubs. Classic preseason demigod characteristic. Let’s see him play against some starters and see if it caries over first.

We can’t keep players healthy for 16 games but you want to add 2 more games!? Yea let’s have the playoffs manned by 2nd and 3rd string players. That will really make them special. I love watching NFL games but I want the top players to be on the field, not the sidelines. I know some will point out that there will be injuries anyway but fatigue is an issue that creates injuries also

"think at this point we have seen enough of both DeShone Kizer and Tim Boyle to know that neither of them are an acceptable solution at the backup quarterback position for the Packers. "

But who is on the scrap heap that is any better? McCown going to the Eagles just shows the dearth of players available. The time to invest is long past even if they wanted to. Even Sam Bradford likely couldn't hold down the fort.

I am sad to see Boyle not progress, he has a live arm, but i dont see any situation where Kizer isnt our backup this year. Hopefully next year, we pay for some peace of mind.

Hey at least our missed tackles went down from game 1 to 2! Heading in the right direction, now get down below 10 for game three.

Love the top 3 players on the list and Lazard's is really showing some big time plays. Interesting to see how they all perform over the next two weeks as they all might seal roster spots.

I think we are heading to a compromise with 17 games and 3 pre-season. Any reduction in pre-season games would be great.

I wouldn't count Lazard out just yet. Considering I hear nothing but praise about his ST work and he catches just about anything thrown at him, I just wouldn't rule him out yet.

I understand Allison and Kumerow are the same "Type" of WR but the kid can ball.

While I agree Kizer hasn't shown much, just where the hell are the Packers going to find one so much "Better" at least this season. Backups are backups for a reason. There just isn't many good ones out there. Tell me a better backup the can actually bring in, then I'll listen. My point is, there just aren't many good ones out there available or unavailable.

I dont look at it from a standpoint of who he would be taking snaps away from the jump, just more keeping him - for when the inevitable happens and a combination of 2 of the tight ends/wide receivers ahead of him miss time with injuries.

He is a chess piece in a three dimensional game. It will just take a bit of time for LaFleur to get the team's rhythm established. Rodgers can run the show on the field. He plays best under center.

The only better option is Bradford. If he wanted to be a backup it would not be cheap and would quite likely threaten our ability to sign jet players.

In any case, I don’t agree with the Author. Kizer has done OK against starting Ds and decent ones at that. That’s about all we are likely to get: OK.

Amen Sam. What is wrong with Gute and the rest of management ? What are they afraid of? What? Do they think the fans will turn in their season tickets if they see Kaepernick taking a knee at the National Anthem? Hell their are 100's of thousands of fans waiting to take their place at Lambeau. In fact IMHO, that we can do without the militarism at sporting events even though the NFL is paid by the DOD to so. As soon as Kaep came in a game as a backup and threw or ran for his first touchdown , all would be forgiven for his pecadillos. By the way, he is protesting police shootings of black people and is not disrespecting the flag or the anthem.

I didn't say Kizer was a disaster against the Ravens he didn't turn the ball over. What I am saying is that as he was in the past Hundley has looked great this preseason. Both Kizer and Hundley were bad in the regular season Kizer was just worse. Doesn't mean he couldn't be better someday maybe. It means that in 2019 if I had to start Hundley or Kizer I'd choose Hundley personally. Especially if he quit chewing gum.

Hundley has looked great in the preseason a couple of years. That's where all the were going to get a 1st or 2nd round pick nonsense started. Id take Hundley over Kizer in a second now, and i said it when they traded for him. Damarius Randall for Kizer was a terrible trade at the time, and it's substantially worse now

To me NFL is year round, and I take joy in following Packers every step of the way. I think this Author has a classic case of following the Packers is no longer a hobby or an escape, but rather a job. Often times when you do what you love for a living, you as much destroy what you love as much as you are doing what you love.

"The reason for this is simply because we are at the point where we cannot put a whole lot of weight into the preseason."

With this, let's say the Packers were 2-0, and dominating in the pre-season, per the premise laid out here, we still could not say we have seen anything that makes us feel we will be better than last couple years?

Here is some advice, enjoy the journey, only one team every year is really happy at the end. The beauty of the preseason is that it's all speculation and conjecture, which is enjoyable, it's why I clicked on this article. My advice is, acknowledge some of that joy when writing the article.

Actually it’s because nothing irritates me more than sloppy football (there’s a surplus of it in the preseason). Secondly, how many times have teams “looked good” in the preseason or had winning records in the preseason and then have gone onto be an abomination during the regular season. (Quite a Few)

We already know what Kizer isn't going to do..win.
We're making judgements on Boyle without him having the same opportunity as Kizer has had, not only in GB but in Cleveland.
Boyle is more accurate and has an awesome arm for any throw. I see no reason why Boyle can't produce more wins than Kizer, if given the chance we don't won't him to have...injury to Rodgers.

Agree with you T12. Boyle has not had the benefit of playing in NFL games like Kizer, yet he’s judged as if he has. Most are looking for a “name” they recognize as a backup even though those “name” QBs already tried multiple times...and have proven to be losers as QBs.
Boyle is tall, stands in the pocket good against the rush and has a great arm to deliver an accurate deep ball. Not saying Boyle is great but if you know football at all and watch him hit receivers in stride, you have to see he has the potential to be a good starting NFL QB with the skill set he displays on the field. Three passing TDs by Boyle in 3 quarters so far...that’s impressive!

This is a different offense than last year. The old system relied heavily on our guy just being able to beat their guys one on one. This offense Is more of a system so junior QBs can pick it up easier than the old one. Look at what San Francisco was able to do last year with a third string quarterback. Look at what Mcvay has done with what everyone thought was a washed up rookie QB in LA. If this system is similar, then Kizar or Boyle should be able to handle it with some experience. Let’s give them a few more games to see if they can learn it before we pass judgment. Once we see the full system in action, we might be pleasantly surprised. Right now it’s a stripped down version.

When considering the backup QB situation, for the 2019 season, I think there is a question to ask. Are we interested in a backup that can keep us a-float because we think we have a legitimate shot at SB, or do we want to groom a young guy that could potentially be an asset down the road, and if they had to play, it would be great assessment of that individual long term?

Unglued....that's a great question and since a really good back-up would cost a lot of $'s, We don't have the Salary cap due to all the deals we did this year to afford a really good back up and there are few and far between. I think the later is the correct response for GB. Groom the young guy.

If Rodgers misses significant games this season our season is over though it's close to over anyway based on likely winning only 9 games. With that, we don't have the QB on the team that is future grooming worthy in so far as that means.

I would offer this for thought, if Lawrence from Clemson enters the draft in 2020-2021, I would pull a Ditka and offer every pick to get the number 1 selection in whichever draft he is available. That would be the future and worth the price while having Rodgers for those seasons.

Sacrifice a whole seasons draft for the franchise QB of the future and then proceed to build around him and let Rodgers go or trade him for some draft picks after the 2020 season to regain what you lost for Lawrence.

Taryn, now that is funny.....How did that work out for Ditka? He proceeded to go 15-33 over 3 seasons and was fired. Not only did he give all of the 1999 picks away, he also did a 1st and 3rd in 2000. Back then the RB was king, so I understand his desire, but an asinine idea for Ditka. The ol' saying goes, "don't put all your eggs in one basket" applies here. No body knows how Lawrence will turn out, just like Ricky Williams as he was a Stud. Lawrence sure seems like a future HOF, but what if he doesn't pan out, injuries, talent who knows.... The list goes on about surefire picks that didn't turn out. Waaay too much risk, but I did get a good chuckle.

I didn't say Ditka doing so for Williams was right and I didn't say do it for a RB, WR,TE, LT but QB, which IS the position that every team looks for to have for 10-14 years...the franchise.

Sure, Lawrence could bust but not the same way like Williams, but if he stayed off the weed would it have been a big a bust, no, but again not something you do for any position other than QB.

This team has youth and a QB with youth is easier to build around.

Rodgers may play until he's 45, not with GB and that's fine with me, especially if we lock up who is likely the best QB to come out with all NFL capabilities...Lawrence.

Brady, if playing elsewhere is possibly already retired but having the franchise HC has him staying around. We don't have a Belichek but we can get another extension of greats...Favre....Rodgers...Lawrence...that's worth the Ditka deal.

' Don't put all your eggs in one basket "....except when the the product is worth all your eggs and with Rodgers aging and not having a HC like Belichek, this is when you go ' all-in ' for what you MUST have...a franchise QB who at this moment would be a top 5 QB in the NFL if he were in the NFL today.

I have been saying for a while, if you look at Rodger’s contract and kizer’s, next year is the year to draft a QB. There should be a good class to I am told.

Kizer will not be here one way or the other. He gets traded or released. Boyle is clearly not ready yet but he was always a long term project. That is why I think that they will try to keep him. If Boyle improves next off season he may be backup one while they bring on the draft pick.

" If Boyle improves next off season he may be backup one while they bring on the draft pick."

That's what I'm afraid of...they'll just get a draft pick QB. If you have a chance to grab the next more probable 10-12 year franchise QB, you don't settle for just a draft pick QB.

While I like the creativity, i think the draft picks required would be excessive. If GB wins 9 games this year, their 7 picks won't be enough to get to #1 overall. You're probably throwing in a 2021 first round pick as well.

Maybe, but would you like to have that third QB in a row even if the price is as you say or would you accept taking your chances with who may be left in a draft. Remember QB's get pushed into 1 st rd because of a lack of real 1st rd talent...Ponder,Gabbert,Dalton,Weeden,Tannehill,
Mariota,Bortles,RG3,Geno Smith,Tyrod Taylor etc,etc as the list is long. I believe there are only 5 true elite QB's in the NFL in any 10 year period.Sure there may be a small outlier period. Rodgers is falling from that if he hasn't already but it's close and he's running out of time in GB,and even if he isn't, why would you keep him for 2-3 years when you can have the next 10-12 with a young guy.
Lawrence can be ours with some cajones in the draft when he comes out. When Lawrence this season proves again how elite he is,how do you not make the strongest play to get him but rather take a chance on a QB falsely hyped into the 1st rd draft charade.

Personally, I love the idea of going all in for Lawrence. Note that he is a true sophomore this season, 2019, so will have to complete his junior season in 2020 before being draft eligible for the first time in the 2021 draft.

Daren....Are you being sarcastic? SF won 4 games last year and 6 the year before.

But they were 15th in passing yards in 2018 using--primarily--two scrub QBs (Beathard and Mullens), and they were 9th in 2017 with a combination of Garoppolo, Beathard, and Hoyer.

I don't believe anything we've seen in preseason will have a barring on what this team does. It's incredibly stupid to think that the bottom half of the roster will give us anything more then play here, or there. Experience is what we must believe in for improvement. Arron Rodgers Leadership. Clark and The Smith Brothers. A solid secondary. While stock reports send messages. The best way to bank and invest, is don't gamble away your assets. We must separate are abilities from are disabilities. We have the best starting OL in years. An All-pro Te. 1 All-pro Wr. And the possibilities of it catching on Fire. Making believe that the position battles are going to be the new sweethearts, will put you in make believe land. The truth is this team only needs to show their Heart. Let them play angry. The wrongs will stop. And the best players will stand out.

Here’s the bottom line: The Pack could have traded for Rosen.

I am still waiting on the quick strike offense based on outside zone runs. I am also waiting on the improvements in the pass rush and pressure that the new guys were supposed to bring.
But we still have time.
