Packers Snap Counts Versus The Lions: Week Eighteen
The Packers fall to the Lions in a lackluster finale.
The Packers did not elevate anyone from the practice squad, which I find odd. They signed Kicker Matt Amendola but left him to languish on the PS. I wish they would have elevated DT Chris Slayton. Instead, the Packers again went with just four defensive linemen active. The inactive players - all healthy scratches - were as follows: Shemar Jean-Charles, Jonathan Ford, Bo Melton, Caleb Jones, and Rasheed Walker. Jordan Love did not play.

The Packers continued to have trouble scoring touchdowns. Entering the game, the team was 22nd in the NFL in the red zone, scoring a touchdown on 51.9% of their trips into the red zone. They finished 1 for 2 against the Lions, but that is belied by having to kick three field goals. The offense continued to look disjointed. I often considered the strength of the team to lie in its running game since it had two good backs and a capable, if inconsistent, offensive line. However, this is a team that has trouble picking up a yard or two when it counts.
The line made Isaiah Buggs, hitherto a sparingly-used, replacement-level defensive tackle who is only playing because Michael Brockers is on IR, look great. On the first possession, Biggs made two run stops from the five yard line, which forced a field goal after an incomplete pass to Dillon. Buggs, a sixth round draft pick in 2019, would finish with 7 tackles, and Pro Football Focus credited him with 5 run stops on 22 run snaps.
The run game was not very good against a defense known to have trouble stopping the run. The Packers gained 40 yards on 12 carries by running backs, a 3.33-yard average, in the first half. Watson gained 12 more on two sweeps but Lazard evened things out by gaining a net of zero on 2 carries. The Packers gained 41 yards on 9 carries in the second half (4.55-yard average), but 26 yards came on two runs with the other 7 carries netting just 15 yards.
The pass protection was mediocre. Yosh Nijman had trouble with Aiden Hutchison, who finished with 2 sacks (not including on erased by a penalty). Zach Tom replaced Nijman and did a better job (though Nijman continued to play special teams for the rest of the game). The Packers allowed 7 quarterback hits and 2 sacks on 29 passing plays. Aaron Rodgers completed 9 of 12 passes - with two clear drops) in the first half for 103 yards and a passer rating of 100.3. However, he completed just 8 of 15 for 102 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the second half, and finished the evening with an 83 passer rating.
Christian Watson caught 5 passes for 104 yards on 6 targets (55 yards in the first half and 49 in the second half). Tonyan chipped in 29 yards on 3 receptions, all in the first half. Cobb added 11 yards on his 2 receptions, all in the first half. Lazard had no receptions in the first half but drew a 46-yard pass interference call on the first possession. Lazard finished with 41 yards on 4 catches, and a drop. Jones caught 3 of 4 for 20 yards. Dillon had no receptions on 3 targets, including at least one drop. Doubs had no receptions on 2 targets, including one drop and another chance on a difficult ball due to an inaccurate throw. It may be that Doubs hit the rookie wall.
The Packers scored fewer points than their season average and considerably fewer than Detroit had been allowing. There were some questionable play calls, some execution errors, and drops. The star players did not shine, but instead fumbled (Jones), or heaved interceptions (Rodgers), or dropped passes. The complementary players, like Doubs, Cobb, and Deguara, failed to contribute sufficiently.

The defense gave up 20 points to the high-flying Lions offense, including 3 points gifted to them by Green Bay's ill-advised decision to go for it on 4th and 1 at the Green Bay 32. Even if the decision was okay, running Lazard on a sweep was not a good idea, and he promptly lost a yard, turning the ball over on downs to the Lions at the 31-yard line.
The Lions gained 104 yards on 25 carries, a 4.2-yard average, about league average despite the Packers playing 2.69 true defensive linemen per play, on average. The Packers managed just 3 quarterback hits. Early in the game they got some pressure and Goff looked shaky, but that subsided. RT Penei Sewell absolutely stoned Enagbare, Hollins, and Walker all game. The Packers lined Walker up as an OLB quite a bit. The Packers played a season-low 1.66 true outside linebackers against the Lions. They might as well have, since they did not get a lot done. Preston Smith had one assisted tackle for the game. He played hard but was not a factor. The interior linemen got all three of the quarterback hits. Wyatt, Reed and Clark each had one, with Wyatt getting the sole sack. The Packers blitzed Walker and Campbell, using them as their chess pieces. Goff completed 23 of 34 for 224 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. He finished with a passer rating of 85.9.
Darnell Savage finished with a team-high 11 tackles (7 solo), a tackle for loss and 2 passes defensed. It may be that he can play a position in the NFL after all. Walker and Campbell each had 7 tackles, with Walker's being all solo tackles. He looked much more confident, and more importantly, more competent in this game. Yes, he was ejected for the bone-headed decision to push the trainer, but he appears to be figuring out how to play linebacker in the NFL.
The Lions punted four times on their 9 possessions (10 including the kneel downs). They only gained 11 yards on one of their scoring drives. This was a pretty good defensive effort.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
O'Donnell had one lackluster 37-yard punt that was downed, but he handled at least one low snap on an extra point. Crosby made 3 of 4 field goal attempts, just missing from 53 yards out. His kickoffs were good enough. Keisean Nixon averaged 9.5 yards on his 4 punt returns, and 19.8 yards on his kickoff returns. He supplied a little spark on one 30-yard return, but the Packers needed more juice than he supplied. McDuffie, Wilson, and Ballentine continued their fine efforts on the coverage teams.
WR: 2.50
TE: 1.43
RB: 1.07
DL: 2.69

OLB: 1.66
DB: 4.71

The RED ZONE! The difference in every ending season game, has been the red Zone.
We Fumble!! Every time changing the momentum.
Which player on this team is a RED Zone threat?
You can't make a Fourth and short, with these current players.?

It sure seems like another DT might have helped against that last Lions drive.
As Bmore has pointed out a few times on Acme recently the Packers inability to run in running situations is frustrating. It certainly doesn't seem like it's just one guy's fault but some competition for Myers and Runyan would be welcome. Given the year as a whole on the OL a coaching change could be in order too.

We are scared to just pile drive run and too addicted to the shotgun. Dillon can carry a pile, but, in addition to better middle push, he also needs to hit it hard and straight on. Just bad use players as part of a wider issue in the red zone.

That's a season low for OLBs at just 1.66 per play. Walker lined up there a lot, but he made little impact. When they blitzed him from a more normal position for an ILB, he got closer. Not much working against Taylor Decker and Penie Sewell. This is a game Rashan Gary would have perhaps altered. GB would have been able to get natural pressure without having to do exotic things to generate pressure. Campbell had blitzed just 14 times this season, but I bet that number moves higher after this game.

I think just Gary's presence would draw enough attention to make the IDL more effective. The Detroit OTs are good enough that they don't need help against the outside pass rushers the Packers were trotting out there. That said, it seemed to me that they chipped Preston Smith with a TE or RB pretty regularly, too.
"Campbell had blitzed just 14 times this season, but I bet that number moves higher after this game."
A more aggressive DC who leans on his coverage and schemes pressure should have toys to work with when Gary returns.

MLF and the Packers showed how weak they were on the 4th and 1. I like the decision to go for it but a QB sneak or Dillon up the middle. Impose your will early and set the tone. NO, instead, MLF tries a bullshit trick play. Game over at that point. Then at the 5 yard line running from the shotgun? Really? Detroit owned the line of scrimmage all night. Bunch a pansy ass players. Also, stop all that celebrating throughout the game. Be a professional and do your job. Get a sack, great, go back in the huddle and do it again. Make a tackle, great, go back to the huddle and do it again. Bunch of pussies!

After the Packers scored to go to 16-13 in the 3rd qtr, they forced a 3-and-out, but promptly went out with a whimper on their next possession. That lost possession was the key turning point--they responded to the Lion TD and regained the lead, they had the momentum, and they shit the bed. After that, they ran 11 more plays for 24 yards. The Lions held the ball for 11:30 in the 4th quarter and scored the one TD they needed to win.

A weak finish by a weak offense. It scored two touchdowns in two games against one of the weakest defenses in the league. It finished 14th in scoring and 17th in yards, making it one of the weaker Packer offenses of the last 30 years.
2019, 15th in scoring and 18th in yards, so that's comparable.
2018, 14th in scoring and 12th in yards, so that's comparable. It got McCarthy fired.
2017, With the Gum Chewer, we were 21st and 26th. That's worse.
2015, the Year Without Jordy, we were 15th and 23rd. Comparable.
After that, you have to go back to about 2005 and 2006, when we were 22nd in points both seasons. And before that, you have to go back to 1992 to find a comparable defense.
By my count, that's about 7 teams in the last 30 years that were as bad, or worse, than this year's version. Only two of them made the playoffs, and none of them won a playoff game.
Our QB.....was average. It virtually every significant measure....QBR, passer rating, interception %,.........Rodgers was in the average range.
Average defense. Average offense. Average QB. 8-9. If we could have scored any points on the weakest defense in the league, we'd have been 10-7.
IMO, fixing the offense is Priority #1 this offseason. Trade Rodgers, play Love, trade Jones and draft his replacement. We'll need to resign Lazard, IMO, and add another receiving threat at either WR or TE. And improve the line. Will we be worse than 8-9 next year? Maybe, but not by much, and we could be better.

First order of business for 2023 is hire a new GM... Packers were clearly out coached, out hustled, out Managed an out played by a team that had nothing to play for, their season was over before it started. It's obvious to me many Packer ticket holders felt the same way about this years team by selling their tickets to Lion fans. There was a sea of blue sitting in the stands. Packers are clearly not a playoff team, they need so much. It would have been just as embarrassing next week against the 49ers. Please bring in a new GM and coaches who can evaluate talent. I'm tired of dumpster diver Gute bringing in lackluster players/retreads. The offense needs talented receivers and stronger more physical O-lineman. The Lions owned the Packers in the trenches. Not surprised at the outcome...
Kudos to Dan Campbell and the entire Lion organization they are no longer bottom dwellers.

The GM is fine. Gute's draft this year was very good - he can only bring in retreads because a certain QB takes up a ginormous amount of the salary cap.
Get rid of Murphy and his unprofessional business structure, replacing him with a competent business manager who'll stay the hell out of the way, and things will get better as soon as we clear some salary cap - so, unless we mortgage the future, not until 2024 or 2025.

I never saw the reason in the game, but I was curious why they made the switch to Tom over Nijman. Was it due to injury or was it do to Tom ended up being the better player?
I thought Tom played really well. The only real pressure he gave up that I remember was when Runyan came over to help, and he actually helped the DE to get around Tom. Tom had him set up well and Runyan knocked him off of Tom.

I think they needed someone nimbler and quicker to handle Hutchison. I was surprised because I thought Nijman was an answer for the Packers at tackle. Stating the obvious, I thought as a whole, the O-line sucked. Really why we lost the game.
You know they couldn't force their will when they had to call trick plays to try to get a yard.

While I think that is a harsh assessment of AR, there is much to commend it. Rodgers simply has not been able to elevate those around him. Sometimes he doesn't see the field as well as he used to, or throw on the move with accuracy, and his performance when blitzed or pressured has fallen off. There used to be a time when it was dangerous to blitz AR. Compared to what was needed and expected from Rodgers, he failed to deliver.
The offensive line was uneven. Myers and Runyan are not playing very well. They've been a problem all year. GB has a lot of talent/bodies at OL with good depth, but the team needs better quality in its starters. A couple of them would be nice backups. I like Zach Tom, much like everyone else does, but I would be hesitant to pencil him in at any position. Is he going to get better, be the same, or have a sophomore slump? Does Nijman still have upside? A team can win with Nijman starting, but he isn't going to be a driving force towards winning. He will need help when matched up against the really good and elite pass rushers.
With Clark, Slaton and Wyatt returning, they're at least one and probably two quality defensive linemen short of what is needed over the course of a 17 game season plus playoffs. Short an OLB, a safety, one to two DL, an IOL, a WR, plus anyone they have to let walk. More needs than resources to fill those needs short of an epic draft and shrewd pro personnel decisions.

TGR, I always preach that win or lose, the whole team is responsible for it. But in the newest culture in NFL, all victories is given to QBs and fails are on somebody else. It is never like that.
I re-watch the game. There was 4 passes on spot from ACR. One was dropped (Allen Lazard). All other throws are either thrown to multiple coverages or way of target. Some of those throws to tight or multiple coverages were caught by Watson, Lazard and Tonyan.
Others were the throws either behind the lines or check downs.
It is obvious that AJ Dillon has problem to run when he got the ball from shotgun, because for his style of running he needs to be in move to be able to utilize his strength and weight through inertia. It is hard to believe that those shotgun calls for AJ Dillon was called from side, because it does not matter how inept MLF is as play caller, I very doubt that he will do that. That turns the look to ACR, who, when he is not certain to whom to throw just hand the ball to AJ Dillon. It is selfish and also makes his team mate looks worse.
Regarding OL. It is interesting how OL was very good vs Vikings (which possess better OL and pass rush) but so weak vs Lions. It maybe that Lions studied Packers OL, find soft spots and use them for their benefit. On the Packers side, they did not do that properly of they just did not did it.
I already noticed that Lions lost almost same amounts of close games (under one TD difference) as Viking won it. And mantra in NFL is that in those kind of outcomes in games it is mostly luck than anything else. Still it looks like Packers underestimated Lions team for a lot. They were unprepared, and especially ACR looked like that. To me he looked very, very surprised by what Lions are capable of.
So, 1st on coaches as they went to the game unprepared and they did not prepared neither phase of the team for the opponent. Second, as 18 years veteran ACR should knew better that it is very dangerous to underestimate any team, no matter what their record says. And he did not prepare himself on Lions.
So, yes, team lost the game and chance to go to the playoffs. But to cover or excuse selfish "heroic" mistakes from ACR is very wrong. If you can't be honest with you, you'll never find the cause of the problems.

As I review the O-line going into 2023, it appears we don't really save any money at all from trading or cutting Bakhtiari, so we might as well keep him. And Jenkins, Nijman, Runyan, Tom, Myers and the others we have under contract, but we should get some better guys to push Hanson and Newman off the roster, unless we're fine with them starting in a playoff game for us. I don't think we are.
I know you're a big Rodgers fan, and this has to be hard, and I don't see how anybody can look at 39 year old Rodgers and think he's leading us anywhere. He's been a damn good QB for us for quite a while and I don't want to see him getting booed, or playing in a stadium where half the people wish he was gone..
He's average in so many metrics this year. His 91.1 passer rating is his worst as a starter. His adjusted Net Yards/Attempt was his lowest as a starter.
We had all the drama last year, and the year before. Not this year, not for me. We need to fix the offense, and Rodgers is not part of the solution.

Actually Crosby made three out of four FGs, not two out of three. I agree that the defense basically played well enough against a good offense but the lack of pressure on Goff as the game went on may have been the deciding factor. They just didn't have enough horses.
There is no one big thing that sticks out in this game, just lots of little things that went wrong. Rodgers played pretty well until his desperation heave that got intercepted. The Packer O-line had a bad day against a defense that hasn't been very good this year. It looked like two average NFL teams playing each other, which is exactly what it was.
The big question: What on earth was going through Rasul Douglas's mind on that field goal attempt, when he swatted the ball away? It was weird, but on the other hand, I'm not sure why it was a penalty. I think the timeout had already been called.
T7Steve
January 09, 2023 at 07:33 am
I'd like an explanation for that too. I thought that the Lions' center had moved the ball to simulate a snap to draw the D. Douglass thought it would be a free play. When no one else said they saw that I figured I was wrong.
Cubbygold
January 09, 2023 at 09:31 am
My understanding is that GB called a timeout. Then Rasul walked over and swatted the ball because the players weren't hearing the whistle and he wanted to prevent them from getting a free practice kick.
The penalty was because he smacked the helmet of a lions o-lineman after being shoved a few seconds later, which the broadcast team was incapable of bringing up as collinsworth was trying to explain it.

"They just didn't have enough horses."
I guess you'd have to say just what horses they needed. The last couple years, a Packer team with a 4th quarter lead would essentially eat the clock, grind out another score, and win. That's not this year's team, and last night--with the game on the line--the Lions did that to the Packers.
"There is no one big thing that sticks out in this game, just lots of little things that went wrong."
That's the theme of the season--too many missed assignments, poor communication, undisciplined play. That's failure to execute, and it's the sign of a middling-to-poor NFL team.

This season was predictable. Many of us did predict it. The team refused to face up to reality last year. We weren’t good all season and we are not well coached, tough or innovative. We’ve reached the dead end TT avoided. We have a President who hired LaFleur then ceded control to Rodgers, gutting our cap in the future. We then compounded it by mis or underusing rookies and coaching failures. There is no improvement without a true clear out.
Let Love play and start to heal the cap under a new Head Coach with some vision, conviction and fire. If Love fails then get that draft pick and use the renewed cap to move on. The past has fled: stop living in it and stop denying the obvious mistakes that led us here.

January 09, 2023 at 09:25 am
We point to the young players on this team playing a lot as the season progressed (and the Packers improving) and it gives room for some optimism going forward--because they're going to need those cheap rookie deals under the 2023 cap and it prevents a complete and utter teardown.
The bottom line is that the Packers really were only the third best team in the division this year. The Lions may have passed them for several years to come, and if the new regime in Chicago has any luck, they'll beef up pretty quickly. This division may rapidly go from one that was pretty weak to a pretty competitive one....hopefully the Packers won't be the doormat.

If LaFleur remains we may well be regardless if Rodgers. Without Rodgers we may be but we need to clear cap and regroup. With him we can’t do that. Either way, LaFleur isn’t cutting it. Just the end of the last vestiges of an era already expired and some illusions of competence fostered before time ran out. This season was built on hubris and a corrupted assessment of our competitive position.

I wish he'd call a press conference the week of the Super Bowl and publicly hand over the reins to Jordan Love. (Something Favre would've never done...)
(Or whenever it is most advantageous for the organization money wise.)

Being an apologist is never easy, but I do my best.
Matt LaFleur is falling the way of many of the new crop of Sean McVay coaches. Young, up-and-coming, and full of ideas. The problem is, they start running out of those ideas, so they keep recycling. Just like the surprise of a Colin Kaepernick emergence, the luster wears off and the team returns to mediocrity. This is where we are at with Matt LaFleur.
After seeing what has transpired this past season, it is easy to understand why the Packers need a strong offensive coordinator. The play calling this season has been predictable, uninspired, and weak. Nowhere do you see player's talents being used to the team's benefit. By the time a good offensive play is discovered, the opponent has tape on it, and figured out how to stop it. A designated offensive coordinator could have been able to be three steps ahead of that curve.
A head coach should be orchestrating all 3 sides of the ball, not concentrating on one side, and then allowing the other coordinators to do what they please in their portions of the game. The head coach needs to have a say in all parts of the game at all times of the game.
Bottom line: Matt LaFleur needs to sit down and assess his own weaknesses, and then he needs to evaluate his staff and plug the holes. That's what a head coach does. If he again fails to do that, he will not be seeing a 6th year in Green and Gold.

MLF has to be fired already! He had 3 years to sit down and assess his own weaknesses, and then he needs to evaluate his staff and plug the holes.
He failed. Je has to be gone!

the best part of this miserable season of mediocre to bad football is the greatreynaldo's excellent snapcount columsn. i was at the game and the best thing there were the comments from two quite overweight ladies behind me: "oh it must be his thumb, ya, it is his thumb?", no says the other, it is his rookie receivers, that's it", needless to say for us who were there we did not quite get what douglas and walker did for the megatron scoreboard replay did not run those clips. This team was simply not ready to play football on both sides of the ball, and i thought it would be warmer than it turned out to be and froze my ass to boot. time to rebuild, from the bottom up, and kick walker off the team. and out of the league

Sometimes it is interesting to see what the other side thinks. Jeff Risdon of Lionswire noted RT Penie Sewell, OC Frank Ragnow and LG Jonah Jackson, particularly their work in the run game during the second half (Detroit ran 18 times for 79 yards - a 4.39 average) to keep GB off the field. TOP was pretty even in the 2nd half, so I think this was important but not as clear cut as implied.
Risdon also picked out Isaiah IDL Buggs and IDL Benito Jones as run stuffers. I definitely notices Buggs who was beating GB's interior offensive linemen, but I don't remember Jones. Risdon wrote that Hutchinson had the stats and was good, but that Alim McNeil had two QB hits and Cominsky had 4 tackles, a QB hit, and made the hit that forced Aaron Jones to fumble. Other than a few specific plays, he didn't have much to say about the LBs or DBs. Kerby with the INT and Anzalone with the stuff of Lazard on 4th down got mentions.
So, the trenches were the difference in his view.
I'll return to post the PFF grades if no one else does it for me. This obviously is the last Packers Snap Counts article for this year. Thanks for reading and commenting. I checked the Details of Jenkins' contract article from last night and see that I made myself pretty unpopular in the comments. LOL - probably going to get worse when salary cap stuff comes up over the next few months!

Thank you for these pieces. They have been the best content along with Al’ polluted mindset all season.
Now take a deep breath, some R&R and limber up for cap season! It’s going to be a complex one.

TGR, you rock, Bubs! I'll never forget how Since'61 and myself were pining immensely for the Packers to draft Akim McNeil a couple of years ago, which would have... never mind! LOL. There are not hindsight draft comments worthy, but, we both knew the impact a run stuffer with a motor in pass rush could be upon our Packers team.
Despite that, I did think and stated here often that TJ Slaton was a complete steal from last year's draft in R5. I love the guy, along with a ton of other picks Gutey has made along the way. That's a tough art, and, no GM gets them all correct.
I we fans can look at stats all we want, but, we'll never be able to quantify LaFleur's desires with the run game aspect of his scheme, nor can we know from what we've seen what his offensive scheme actually can be called. I have zero clue identifying exactly what his scheme is.
Remember the maxim, "play to your strengths, and make them stop you?"
The Packers have had 3 insanely dynamic RBs over the last 4 seasons, and they were given a ridiculously low number of carries over that span.
After LaFleur had given a single RB greater than 50 carries in TEN during his time as OC???
WTAF is going on out there? I think we all know, and have seen it year in, and year out for many, many years: Hero Ball.
There's one guy sucking up all the oxygen in the room in Green Bay, and I cannot wait until he's outta here. 11 years of complete futility, or is it 12? I've lost count...

Once we get into the red zone, especially inside the 10, its two runs and then I Rodgers the great will reluctantly try and pass into coverage and hope and pray it doesn't get intercepted. No problem we can always kick that field goal for three points.
50 mil for a QB and we want to make it a run game? Perhaps its because it eats the clock and keeps our piss poor defense off the field.
Amos, Savage, Douglas, Ford all guys who would be second or third string on any other team. They were rejects.

OK, is it safe now to say that it was a mistake to go with Rodgers this year instead of trading him to Denver for the picks we could have gotten? Would we have been much worse off with Love than 8-9?
Look, I wanted to trade Rodgers then. I understood why they went with him for another year. I can't imagine this is anybody's idea of things working out well, and I won't understand if he's our QB next year.

I wanted him gone too. Actually I wanted him gone the year before, but he had an MVP season in 2021, so maybe I was wrong then. At any rate, I dread the thought of him returning next year.

Best and worst PFF Grades:
Watson (88), Davis (68), Dillon (65.9), Tonyan (63.9), Lazard (62.7)
Doubs (34), Nijman (35), Jenkins (52), Myers (54), Cobb (55.5)
The drop from Watson to the next best offensive player is huge, and that guy played 8 snaps, and the next best is an important but still half-time player. Jenkins is a surprise. Myers is not very good. Terrible draft pick. Neither Myers nor Jenkins could run block, according to PFF. Cobb is Cobb at this stage of his career.
So, Bakh, Runyan, and Tom graded between 55.5 and 62.7, which is low average to average. Not good enough, given that Jenkins was below average and Nijman was terrible (3 pressures, 2 sack in 24 snaps). Bakh no doubt got dinged by the holding penalty, which at least had the virtue of being the "block" that sprung Jones for a nice gain, even if the penalty erased the gain and more.
I am trying to pound this home: the OL has depth but it doesn't have 5 good or even above average starters. Rodgers was under pressure on 12 out of 30 dropbacks, or 40%. That is a big number.
Wyatt (91), Barnes (78.9), Clark (76.4), Campbell (73), Alexander (72)
Gaines (37), Walker (46.4), Hollins (49), Smith (51), Douglas (51.2)
I don't care about Barnes because he played little, though it is good to see. Wyatt, Clark, Campbell and Jaire play full time, so that is good. Those are really good numbers. Walker gave up 4 completions on 4 targets and had the penalty. Hollins had no stops, tackles or pressures over 17 snaps. I mean, that's what I saw as well and why they tried Walker at OLB. Preston Smith had 1 pressure, but missed two tackles and no stops. He was working so Goff didn't have endless time, but Goff had good time nevertheless.

From Packerswire and Zach Kruse:
"Down four points, three-and-half minutes left, 3rd-and-10, playoffs on the line. Or, the exact scenario in which a team needs a $50 million quarterback to make a big play to save the season. Instead, the Packers BLEW A A PROTECTION UP FRONT and Aaron Rodgers launched a prayer to Christian Watson that was easily intercepted...."
GB might be in four down territory, but I doubt it because they are on their own 33 yard line. So, if AR throws it away, they probably punt, since they had all 3 timeouts remaining with 3:37 remaining. A heave downfield might be as good as a punt.
But you can also view it as hero-ball. And this was an absolute wounded duck, a ball that came down too far away from Watson for him to even play defense on it, much less fight to catch it. AR didn't get enough on it, which is a pattern lately, so maybe he wouldn't have gotten enough on it to even throw it away. He should have just eaten it and taken the sack if he couldn't throw it away.
But don't forget the "protection error" either. That has been a pattern since Linsley left. Whether it is failing to account for all rushers, putting in the correct slide, or just failing to recognize and pass off stunts, that too has become a pattern in Green Bay. Steno is not coaching the line specifically and Linsley is gone. Actually, the problem with stunts was in evidence in 2021 when Steno was still the coach. Hmmm.
