Packers Snap Counts Versus The Bears: Week Six

The Packers persevere through a war of attrition to get the win against the Chicago Bears in week six.

The Packers promoted JuWaan Winfree from the Practice Squad to the active roster to replace Malik Taylor, who was placed on the Covid Reserve List.  As a Covid replacement player, Winfree can be promoted from the Practice Squad two more times.  Vernon Scott, Jack Heflin and Isaiah McDuffie were healthy scratches and the other inactive players were Kevin King (injury) and Dennis Kelly (illness).

The offensive line started slowly with Jenkins allowing an early sack by Robert Quinn.  Jenkins seemed to settle in after that.  The line had some difficulty opening holes for the running backs.  Dillon finished the first half with 5 carries for 34 yards, but 36 yards came on one run, leaving a net of -2 yards for his other 4 carries.  Jones carried the ball 7 times for 30 yards with a long of 8 yards in the first half.  The Packers persevered with the run to finish with 135 yards on 24 carries by the running backs (a 5.6 yard average).  Aaron Rodgers added 17 yards on 3 carries, including a touchdown.  The offensive line again was pretty good as pass blockers, allowing 6 pressures on 28 passing attempts, per Pro Football Focus.  Aaron Jones added 4 receptions on 4 targets for 34 yards and a touchdown to finish with 110 yards from scrimmage.  On the touchdown reception, Jones caught a check down pass that looked like it would go for a short gain and made a defender miss allowing him to score a big touchdown.

David Bakhtiari is eligible to return from the PUP List now, though it is unknown whether he is ready to return.  With the return of Elgton Jenkins as well, it will be interesting to see where Jenkins lines up in future.  Center Josh Myers left the game after just 4 snaps and did not return.  Coach LaFleur has consistently indicated that the Packers will play their five best offensive linemen, which probably should not include RG Royce Newman.  The rookie has battled and looks like he can play in the NFL, but like Runyan, perhaps a year of coaching would be beneficial to him.

The Packers played 1.58 Tight Ends per play against the Bears, in part to assist the offensive line against a very good Bears front 7.  It probably makes sense for Marcedes Lewis to get the most snaps.  Lewis caught 2 passes on 2 targets for 17 yards in the second half while Robert Tonyan caught 2 of 3 targets for 10 yards in the first half.  Josiah Deguara played 15 snaps and caught his only targeted pass for 4 yards.

Davante Adams caught 4 of 5 targets for 89 yards (a whopping 17.8 yards/target) and Allen Lazard chipped in 3 receptions on 5 targets for 27 yards (5.4 yards/target).  Amari Rodgers caught his only target for 14 yards and an important first down.  Cobb (23 snaps) and St. Brown (12 snaps) were not targeted.  St. Brown threw a beautifully timed block on the reception to Amari Rodgers and added two tackles on special teams.  Amari Rodgers returned 2 punts for 16 yards with a long of 16 yards.  Aaron Rodgers finished with a 128.0 passer rating.

When Preston Smith left the game after only 8 snaps due to an Oblique injury, fans probably wondered where the pass rush would come from, especially since the Packers were without their top two cornerbacks.  The Packers got it from Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry and Jonathan Garvin.  Per PFF, Gary had 4 pressures in 33 pass rushing opportunities, along with 4 solo tackles (3 stops) and a QB hit.  Clark had a big game with back-to-back sacks, 3 solo tackles, and 2 tackles for loss.  Lowry had 5 tackles (4 solo), 1 sack, another QB hit, and a tackle for loss.  Garvin had 2 solo tackles, 1 sack, another QB hit, and a tackle for loss.  The Packers held Justin Fields to a 75 passer rating, though Fields added 43 rushing yards on 6 carries.

The Bears were able to run the ball.  Their third-string running back gained 97 yards on 19 carries with a long of 25 despite their suspect offensive line.  Fields added 43 more yards.  De'Vondre Campbell had 6 tackles (4 solo) and Rasul Douglas added 5 solo tackles.  Henry Black had 4 solo tackles while being picked on in coverage.  Keke had 3 solo tackles and Slaton, in just 7 snaps, had one solo tackle.  Jaylon Smith made his debut and contributed a missed tackle.

Yiadom played 9 snaps before it became apparent that he was a complete liability in coverage.  Rasul Douglas replaced him and was active and physical.  Chandon Sullivan had a nice game in coverage allowing 0 completions on 3 targets, per PFF.  Despite some issues, the cornerbacks allowed 69 yards and 6 completions on 11 targets.  Savage left the game with an possible concussion.

While it is true that the Bears do not have a good offense and Justin Fields needs time, the Packers were playing without 5 preferred starters by the second half: ZaDarius Smith, Preston Smith, Kevin King, Darnell Savage, and Jaire Alexander.  The defense gave up 14 points on the road to earn another win.

The special teams coverage units looked shaky.  The Bears returned 3 kickoffs that looked like they might go a long way but for a saving tackle and they had a long punt return negated by a penalty that did not affect the long run.  Still, Crosby made all of his attempts and Bojorquez boomed some punts, including an 82-yarder that went for a touchback.

This appears to be the time of the season for me to eat crow.
ESB earned his paycheck in this game.

I thought Jaylon Smith would be a nice addition. The jury is out on Jaylon as he looked lost out there.

Lowry had another nice game. The bang for the buck might not compute as favorably as I'd like, but there is some bang, at least.

Rashan Gary is learning what it looks like to the be main pass rushing threat, though he got some help from Garvin, Clark and Lowry. He should call CM3 to ask for advice about that.

Garvin looked better rushing than he did defending the run, but he is encouraging overall. Can't say I noticed Hamilton.

The less Barnes plays, the worse he looks.

How bad is Kabion Ento at special teams if Yiadom gets the nod over him?

Cole Kmet caught 4 of 4 for 49 yards.

I usually notice Slaton, but not today. Didn't notice Keke and his 3 solo tackles, or Lancaster and his 2 solo tackles, either.

Pretty fair take. On Ento, he’s got the tackling issue but looked good as a gunner. I think it’s more that as bad as Yiadom is in coverage, he’s actually good on STs.

It will be interesting to see what Douglas and Dunbar can do at CB as they settle in to the system, but Douglas, while looking shaky in terms of system familiarity showed that he can and will tackle. Jaylon Smith looked like a player who was too confused by his own system. I think that the fact that he played this week at all probably says more about the limitations of others. As you will, I will judge him once he’s had a chance to gain some familiarity with the system.

Clark seems to be being used a bit differently. I’m pretty sure more time at DE. It is working if so, and giving him more opportunity to make an impact. It also seems to be helping Lowry. After 2 bad games to start the season, Keke is now holding his own: the same can be said if Lancaster. That is a big help to the rotation. I’d still like to see more of Slaton.

I have to say that I was impressed by Patrick at C. I agree with you on Newman. Runyon has looked much better. When Bakh returns, where would you play Jenkins if Myers is out for a while? Is he better at C and Patrick at RG or at keep Patrick at C and move Henkins to RG? Jenkins has normally been on the left, but moving Runyon might be more problematic. Perhaps at C with Patrick at RG? Newman just makes mental mistakes. I don’t think it is talent but experience. At times he’s good and at others bamboozled by opponents.

That's an interesting question. I am open to persuasion on this issue. I don't want to mess with Runyan at LG. So, I think I'm against moving Runyan to RG (coach's decision since I don't really know if he is accustomed to RG).

I think Newman is the first guy to the bench when others (Bahk/Myers) return and I would certainly find a way to keep Patrick on the field. Not the most physically talented guy, but a true battler who never gives up and rarely beats himself. Newman will eventually consign Patrick to the bench as he appears more physically talented, but he makes too many mental errors as a rookie.

Jaylon Smith has played too well in Dallas (all pro or pro bowler in 2019) to assume this week will be his norm in GB. I think he doesn't know the system yet, but he will figure it out soon enough. Both the D-line and the ILB's seem to be thriving in Barry's system which was not the case under Pettine. Hopefully J. Smith thrives as well.

Thanks for the article. I'm surprised that Burks got more snaps than Barnes and J. Smith. Summers is ST only, apparently. And McDuffie is inactive again, so I wonder if one of these guys is going to be waived to make room for someone's return from IR.

I thought Lowry had a nice game too. Hell, if he could have gotten a hold of a little more of Fields jersey he would have has 2 sacks.

Gary isn't getting the sacks yet, but damn the dude is hustling EVERY play. They will come.

Losing Preston Smith was a big factor in a 3rd string RB gaining all those yards. Preston has been excellent against the run, one of the best OLB run defenders is the NFL according to PFF.

I mentioned the same thing about Newman. I love the kids effort but he's struggling as a run blocker so once DB comes back I'd be surprised if JRJ doesn't replace him.

Jaylon Smith SHOULD look a little lost. I'm a big Barnes supporter but on the Bears 2nd TD Barnes was just standing there as the receiver crossed in front of him and caught the ball. We'll see but I still like the Smith signing...A LOT.

Yeah. Jaylon's first practice with the Packers was 1 week ago... He's insanely talented, and I have ZERO worries about him becoming a legit force on our D.

Couldn't watch the game, only listened. Sounds like Douglas had a pretty nice game?

Surprised to see Barnes had so few snaps, I wonder if that's health related or matchup related.

I wouldn't call Douglas' day a thing of beauty but Yiadom was a complete sieve. Douglas did come up and really hit some people (Yiadom can tackle as well) and the coverage definitely improved substantially with Douglas, probably to an acceptable level.

After Yiadom got the hook, Chicago looked to see who Henry Black was covering. I sure hope Savage does not miss too much time.

Edit: I should have mentioned that Douglas hit Fields hard and earned a personal foul for it as Fields probably had started his slide already. I am having a brain fizzle but I am sure he had another goof up. Still, knew he was on the field and the coverage improved.

Interesting, thanks for that.

Although injuries are never a good thing, this type of early season adversity while still piling up wins is valuable for later in the year. This team is learning how to win without key names, and maybe they become smarter about who's on the field if injuries bite late in the year/playoffs.

I don't know man. Key names can be pretty important - just look at TJ Watt in SNF. Tom Silverstein from the Milwaukee Journal thinks Z. Smith won't be back this year or next. Maybe he has a source or something, but we need a guy like that in the late season and playoffs..

I’m hoping that Scott is approaching full health. Black is a useful depth box S, but we knew coverage was something he’s going to have to learn to be more. Scott was the least weak in coverage depth S in the off season. Hopefully Savage can clear the protocol in time for next week, but I would be a little more comfortable with Scott active as depth. Black is a decent STer though, which might be an obstacle?

I'm glad we moved quickly to get Douglas in; there was no sense in sticking with Yiadom. Douglas did a good job for somebody who has only been here for a short time. Personal foul forgiven, as it is very tough for defensive players moving at a fast speed to pull up suddenly and avoid contact.

Thanks, TGR.

I think that some of Burks' snaps came at OLB.

Yup. I could default to just listing LBs without differentiating between ILB and OLB. Always had this problem with Z moving inside. Smith might end up playing some OLB as well moving forward.

I’d prefer the current distinction remain. There was and may be future overlap, but it was pretty small and I think largely a result of losing Smith so early and not having a lot of options active. That said, I can see Jaylon getting the odd snap there moving forward.

I was hoping for more snaps for Slaton, but with Lancaster's return from the COVID list his snaps dropped. Given how well the Bears were running the ball, I was surprised his snaps dropped in half, but it is hard to argue with giving up only 14 points.

This info is really helpful to understanding the game.
The anouncers were so superficial in their "analysis" particularly regarding GB's linebacker problems. They didn't mention Psmith going out or Jaylon coming in, and never talked about how this hurt the D and created opportunities for Chicago's offense.
As for the substance, I recall reading last week that Jaylon was probably not going to play much if at all but he ends up with 17 snaps. No suprise he was out of position a few times. He'd better hit the books this week if Psmith can't go against the skins.

i cant remember if it was jones or dillon who broke one up the middle but lucas patrick got a nice seal on roquan smith to make that play happen. hes not the strongest fella, but hes a scrapper. if newman keeps this shit up, patrick could be back at his old position of RG.
