Packers sign six draft picks and announce undrafted free agents

The Packers kick off their rookie minicamp today.

The current CBA got one thing right at least: Making sure rookies get signed quickly.

In advance of their rookie minicamp, the Packers announced the signing of six draft picks and a bunch of undrafted free agents.

No, the story was that the Pack were going to pick Lock, but Denver found out and traded up.

Whatever is true: I'm glad we didn't invest any capital into a rookie QB

Totally agree: wait until next time to draft a QB. In the meantime, shore up the guts and depth of the team with the kind of draft we just had. I'd like at some point to see the Packers be able to win without relying on spectacular QB play most of the time.

I like the 2 QBs we signed that were undrafted over any QB on this draft after Murray. No way, atleast in my opinion were any QBs worth being drafted this year for the Pack.

The 2020 QB class is much better than this year. Glad they are waiting.

And for that matter the WR class is predicted to be the strongest in years next year.

That means that Jenkins was a second choice. The lack of 4th round picks meant that it probably would have taken a 5th and 6th to move up just a couple of spots.

I doubt any were truly first choices, even Gary. But he is the only one that could have been as our first choice.

If Denver picked the Lock, does that mean they stole him from the draft room?

Just read that Arizona Cardinals coach K. Kingsberry stated that Kyler Murray was expected to start day one. Since their backup is Hundley, I guess he must have looked at some film...….

With the still-bad offensive line, perhaps they should have thrown Hundley out there. Make him earn his $2 million.

As a second round pick, Lock would have been a 4 year deal. Rodgers presumably playing 4 more years, so why did they want Lock?

Packers might of had interest because they have a 36 year old QB who has suffered multiple concussions, had both of his collarbones broken, a history of leg/knee injuries. QB is the most important position in any organized sport. Are you comfortable with Kizer/Boyle as the answer if Rodgers misses time due to injury or is forced to retire before 4 years due to injury?

Bottomline, Sonomaca let the Lock thing go Denver drafted him and life goes on. Talent at QB in 2020 looks to be better than 2019 was. We'll see if Rodgers returns to form in the meantime. We'll see what Getsy can do with Kizer/Boyle in the preseason.

Here is my question: if the Pack pass on Gary, where is he picked? Was there another team ready to grab him? Did other teams know something about the shoulder that we did not?

sonomaca,

I almost do not think you are serious.

You think the Pack (or any team) is going to knowingly draft a cripple early in the draft ?

I do not. These players are vetted up, down and sideways and then back up again, before they are drafted.

That injury could not have been missed.

I heard someone say that he read on the internet that literally no one would have picked him. He would have been an UDFA, assuming he even got a camp invite.

This is easy.

The Packers knew Gary well. they said they had locked onto him back in February (which means they had looked at him way before that). They had plenty of time to thoroughly check out everything about him, time to grind the tape, time to speak to all those people that were around the guy regularly and get their opinions.

They knew about his dyslexia, they knew about his shoulder, they knew about his modest production in college, they knew EVERYTHING. With all that, they STILL took him at #12. Does that give you some idea of how much they liked him.........(hint, a LOT).

As for that shoulder, the harness is just there to stop the shoulder from getting into situations where it might be vulnerable. The guy put up 26 reps on the 225lb bar, that isn't a shoulder in crisis. Bottom line, if Doc McKenzie is happy with taking him (and the Packers medical team are known for being cautious), why should we be worrying about injury problems.

Why??? Prevention.

I don't give a damn about Lock, but i'm not crazy about Gary waring a shoulder brace (given our history with K King who was supposed to be totally fine playing with a brace before of course he went to IR).

The people in here who are being negative on Gary need to chill. His shoulder is fine. It’s for precautionary reasons. Gary is going full out in practices and played the last for games last year without a problem. Stop reading these fake news reports from authors trying to get clicks during the slow training camp season.

zeroluv,

I've said it 40 -50 times here. "some one said" ... an "agent said" ... a "scout said" means about as much as me picking the next Supercash lottery numbers.

I (sort of) understand those that want to predict the NFL, but reality says, you cannot accurately guess NFL decisions. Draft, UFA, rosters, medical situations, personal situations, etc.

They have a better chance at that lottery. LOL. His arm fell off twice already.

Like many of you, I was initially stunned and disappointed by the Gary pick. However the more I read about him and watch his highlights, the more I’m starting to think this guy could be really special. Even if at some point he does go on IR—and nobody knows that he will—I don’t think Gute picked him for this year alone. Seems to me Gute expects him to be an impact player for years to come and well worth the #12 selection.

I am not disappointed, because we know so little. Those negative thoughts are all media/site driven.

In Guty I trust. (I understand he will have misses)

I'm disappointed. So much for medical tests. Was the shoulder the reason for the production numbers? Good bet! Do we draft players on their RAS? Gute does. Thats not scouting. Nobody is being negative. It was a bad decision. Your only saying you trust Gute for Garys welfare. Not Gute. And that is why people are doing reversals. "For the kids"! if the packers don't make the playoffs I hope the stockholders want butt. Taking a injured player @12 is not winning football.

“So much for the medical tests”? The medical tests are designed to screen players. He passed that screening evidently. Few doubt that the Packers medical stance is more conservative than most teams.

Given that, even without the fact that this was a disclosed condition, I fail to see why some assume that this is a surprise to the Packers, was missed by the medical staff, and was not factored into the draft value evaluation or expectations for this season or for the life of his contract (which is the most important perspective).

Time to move on, and as with all signings, see what happens. There are no guarantees in life or the NFL.

If it was a disclosed position. I fail to see why Wilkins wasn't drafted first. If we now take players that are on the mend. Simmons would have worked more. Even Extra Picks for @12. I'm not saying Gary will be a bad player. I'm saying BPA. Consider to; how many writers did not want Gute to draft Gary. Versatility or Tweener, Gute lost creditability with the selection. This should've been a No brainer. Gary isn't.

Gary was clearly rated higher than Wilkens on all boards. The ranking was close, but the Packers wanted PASS RUSH. Za Smith can move to five tech or inside and Gary outside with Fackerellor P Smith coming fromthe other flank. Keke was there inthe fourth round where the Pack has typically found their guy to be part of the DT rotation. Gettleman wanted Jones asap and didn't move on Gary as projected in the mocks, nor Allen, Oliver, Burns or Bush.

No one wrote that Gary was devoid of talent. Many of us see him as a boom or bust player: the athletic ability is obvious, vs. tweener issue, production issue, alleged motor issue, injury issue which by necessity is not entirely clear to fans.

I was disappointed when GB drafted Randall. I felt a little better after I watched his tape, but remained disappointed because I thought Malcom Brown was a better talent and/or that we could have traded back, picked up a draft pick and still have picked Randall or another good player. Brown has a CarAv of 28 while Randall's is 18. Big difference.

I distinctly recall preferring Vernon Butler to Clark. Um, oops.

I preferred Clark. Butler was Jerseys pick too. But this was about the future. We all know he tested great. But so did Spriggs. My point was a starter, to a guy everyone is guessing at where he'll perform best. Gary was dropping. And the packers saved the drop by most experts. My problem with most of the thinking on this subject, is this. You HOPE pettine straightens him out. My solution is: you don't need a coach or a scheme, if that player is a great player. Wilkins will was that player! Upside and ceiling aren't needed @12. Wilkins starts tomorrow. Gary Won't.

What a silly discussion!!! Why would the Packers even let him practice (with or without a brace) if his shoulder still needed to heal? And as many of the above comments stated, Packers' medical staff had examined him and cleared him. Why believe in unfounded, unsupported, and totally uninformed negative rumours? It's as if some people need to self-validate by proclaiming that they have exclusive "knowledge" which a major football franchise and its medical staff are not privy to and that said football franchise - the Packers - wasted a 1st round draft pick on a player with a defective shoulder. What utter nonsense!!!

For the past months I can't think of a player aside from Kyler Murray who elicited such a long detailed review of his shortcomings ( perceived or otherwise) and I guess until after the 2022 or 23 season we won't know the answers to this question. I continue to remind myself that the draft is like buying a tomato plant with 4 leaves on it and imagining what it will look like when it produces fruit or a steer on a feed lot, You just don't know and the rookie season is not the end of his career. just remember in 2016 when Green Bay selected Kenny Clark and how most of the league poohpoohed that selection. Even Bob Mcginn carried on how Vernon Butler was still on the board when he was taken and at the end of the rookie year he continued to point out that Butler had more sacks than Clark and so on and how GB made a mistake. Lets view today- Butler is a back up in Carolina who could be had for two jockstraps and and can of Vaseline while Clark is considered on of the best at his position. So put aside the doom and gloom and lets see how the new 52 pans out before writing him off!!
