Packers Sign Jordan Love

On Wednesday, the Packers announced the signing of first-rounder Jordan Love.

Signed. Sealed. Delivered. The Green Bay Packers announced Wednesday that they reached a four-year $12,383,470 deal with this year’s first round selection Jordan Love. The deal also includes a $6.5 million signing bonus. Love’s contract is fully guaranteed and makes him the first 26th overall pick in league history to receive a fully guaranteed contract, according to Mike Garafolo.

The Packers sent shockwaves through the NFL when selected what can only be assumed to be Aaron Rodgers’ eventual replacement. At the tail end of the first round, Green Bay traded up four spots to make their selection. The pick was surprising for everyone when it turned out to be a quarterback.

Rodgers, 36, is under contract through the 2023 season. However, the two-time MVP has stated on numerous occasions that he would like to play into his 40s. The Packers do have a fifth-year option with Love which could be the earliest he plays if the team does not move on from Rodgers sooner.

Love is considered a raw prospect out of Utah State with tremendous arm talent but questionable decision making. Green Bay was clearly thinking long term when they picked Love, hoping he can sit behind Rodgers and learn from one of the best to ever play the position. The process has worked for the Packers in the past.

On Wednesday, Green Bay also announced the signing of running back AJ Dillon.  The only remaining unsigned draft picks from this year’s class are tight end Josiah Deguara, center Jake Hanson, and  linebacker Kamal Martin.

"and makes him the first 26th overall pick in league history to receive a fully guaranteed contract"

Puzzling to say the least. Did they get him at a discount or what was the benefit to the packers?

Less than 2% would have been not guaranteed, not a big deal.

Thanks Bure. That gives me some perspective.

Replying to myself because I found this:

"No. Not really a big deal. Last year the 24th pick got a fully guaranteed deal which typically meant this year 25 would get one and 26 the next. Rather than haggle over 1.6% of the contract being non-guaranteed they just did the full guarantee since its a QB"

Fully guaranteed? He must have worn his mask. Guteys response should be just as honorable with our FA veterans.

I am really excited to see this kid develop. He was my favorite QB in the draft. Also pumped to see AJ Dillion this year, I think he takes off this year. This kid an absolute truck. Faces way more stacked boxes than JT also.

Draft time, along with this time of year and every rookie has only upside. Obviously, very interested in seeing Love and AJ out there but with all the positive comments and positive articles about Josiah I'm very curious to see what we have. Josiah sounds to me if he plays up to all the PR he will quickly be a fan favorite.

Guaranteed? That’s odd. Boy, oh boy are the pundits going to have a field day with THAT news. And I was just getting over the “why did the Packers not select a WR?” noise.

Overall, Love's contract seems fine to me. Sweat, the 26th pick last year, got $11.64M total, with a $6.486M signing bonus. I'd have expected Love to get $7.002M signing bonus, about $500K more than he got. Instead, GB guaranteed all of his base salaries as well. Sweat got all but $189,890 in base salaries guaranteed. Multiplying Sweat's total compensation ($11.64M) by the 5.3% increase in the salary cap, I would have expected Love to get $12.25M altogether, and he got a little more. That's not surprising: despite slotting, QBs often get a little blip in their deals, often more signing bonus (up front money), but sometimes a higher percentage of their deals guaranteed as well for the late first and 2nd round QBs.

I think I understand the guarantees as he's guaranteed to be on the bench for at least two years and hopefully four.
He's also not going to get cut, so go ahead and guarantee it.GPG

Would be great if he was guaranteed to be on the bench but it's the NFL there are no guarentees. Half of the NFL starting QBs missed games last year. Quite a few of then significant time. Wentz, Mahomes, Flacco, Smith, Brees, Big Ben, the list goes on and on.
