Packers Sign Herb Taylor to Replace Derek Sherrod on Roster

The Packers have placed rookie tackle Derek Sherrod on injured reserve and replaced him with another offensive lineman, Herb Taylor, on the 53-man roster, general manager Ted Thompson announced on Tuesday.

Taylor is 6-4, 305 pound third-year player who played in 18 games including one start for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2007 to 2008. He also was on the active roster of the Denver Broncos late in 2009 but did not play.

More recently, Taylor was in training camp with the New York Giants in 2010 and the Broncos again in 2011.

Packers left tackle Marshall Newhouse was a college teammate of Taylor's at TCU in 2006 and 2007. Taylor will wear No. 72 with the Packers.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers worked out Taylor earlier this month.

Why sign a tackle off the street as opposed to someone off the PS?

Do you think Newhouse had some persuaion in signing him? Also Calis Campbell DE with the Cards has his contract up. Calis' agent is rattling the sabre on him leaving. Calis did give the Pack fits in the playoff game a few years ago. Since his rookie contract is up would TT go after him?

Aaron Calis Campbell's DE Cards rookie contract is up and his agent is looking. Calis gave the Pack fits in the playoff game a few years ago. Would TT go after a new free agent of his caliber?

I would really tend to doubt it, but you never know. More likely he will draft a d-lineman in April.

Take a guess.

Whoa. Guess Ray Dominguez and Chris Campbell weren't ready.

Dominguez switched to guard exclusively during camp. No way do you want him anywhere near the tackle position.

I thought guard was right next to the tackle position :)

Hopefully Herb Taylor never sees the field.

Ted signs a guy out of the blue who no one's ever heard of? LOL. Doesn't phase me in the least.

Who else is out there?

I do wonder what this o-line will be looking like next season and beyond. Mostly I wonder about left tackle. Clifton may be back for the playoffs, but after that? Do you think Ted expects Newhouse to improve to the point where he is a good enough left tackle to protect Rodgers for the long haul? Maybe the plan was for Sherrod to eventually take over, but depending on how long this injury keeps him out, that could change or affect his improvement. Maybe we need to draft another good lineman, but shouldn't the next draft be defense heavy?

Personally I've wondered if there would ever be a chance of Bulaga becoming the left tackle, he's the best tackle on this team. But it would make sense if they just want to keep him at RT where he's played so well.

For know I just hope we can get the win this week, lock up homefield, and then get both Bulaga and Clifton healthy for the playoffs.

Sherrod and Bulaga are the tackles. Newhouse is the swing tackle who can back up both sides.
They messed Sherrod up trying to play him at G this preseason. But he'll bounce back.

With a first name like that... He's ok in my book. Smoke em Herb!

Kind of a combination of HERB Adderley and Jimmy TAYLOR. That practically SCREAMS Packers.

I know, that's the first thing I thought too... I love the name Herb Taylor, sounds like a Lombardi era name.
