Packers Sign DT Adams, Officially Ink Their 2017 Draft Class

You can mark the 2017 Packers' draft class as officially in the books and under contract.

Third round (93rd overall) pick and defensive tackle Montravius Adams signed his long-awaited contract with the Packers Wednesday evening, making him the last of the third-round picks from the 2017 NFL draft class to sign their deal.

Adams' rookie deal is reportedly worth over $3.1 million dollars and includes a signing bonus of $744,766, per Over the Cap.

There was a small sense of urgency amongst fans for his deal to get done, however, with training camp still three weeks down the road, Russ Ball and the rest of the negotiators in the Packers' front office made sure the 6'4", 304-pound Adams wouldn't enter camp on a holdout.

Adams starred at Auburn, finishing his collegiate career with 19.5 tackles for a loss to go along with his total of 147. He also racked up 10.5 sacks and even two interceptions. He also played defensive end during his sophomore season under defensive line coach Rodney Garner.

Adams didn't become a full-fledged starter at his true defensive tackle position until his junior year in 2015, finishing that season with two forced fumbles to go along with his 2.5 sacks and 44 tackles. He was named First-team All-SEC after his impressive senior season, as well as second-team All-American by the Associated Press, CBS Sports and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

Now officially inking his allegiance in Green Bay, Adams becomes one of the nine defensive linemen currently on the active roster and one of the eight who can fluently play the defensive tackle position. He's expected to help patch a few leaks, especially with the state of Letroy Guion currently up in the air. Guion has a four-game suspension to serve at the start of the 2017 regular season.

I knew that this will come, sooner than later...

If this kid shows anything and I believe that he will, this is another reason to chuck Guion. Thanks, Since '61

There's a lot in Adams that reminds me of Josh Boyd. Don't get me wrong, Boyd was a guy who played a lot of snaps for the Packers, but I hope Adams can be much better...

There is definitely an opportunity for this guy. Let's hope he makes the most of it.

What took him so long? It's a rookie contract, FFS. Was he holding out for another trip through the training table line at camp?

I've heard that about the only thing that holds up the CBA-structured rookie contracts is the money and language related to injury settlements, offset language, and the timing of the payment of guaranteed money.

Adams probably still had some funds left in his account from his Auburn contract, so there wasn't any rush on his part.

Not sure how a player could "enter camp on a holdout". Don't they have to end their holdout before they enter camp? Or are they allowed to just stand on the sidelines and observe?

Players can sign an "Offseason Participation Agreement" under article 21 and 22 of the CBA. They can participate in drills, conditioning and such, so they can do more than stand there and watch, though I think they do not engage in contact drills in general. Not sure if that is because it is not allowed or if their agents think it is a really bad idea.

Gracias, TGR!
