Packers send Nick Perry to IR, promote James Looney

A frustrating and severely disappointing season has come to an end for Packers linebacker Nick Perry.

The team announced on Saturday evening that they have placed Perry on season-ending injured reserve with a right knee injury.

Perry lands on IR for the third time during seven-year career. Unsurprisingly to anyone who has watched the Packers regularly, he has never played a full season.

Rookie defensive lineman James Looney figures to help a defensive line that will be without Mike Daniels, possibly for the remiainder of the season.

No way.

In Ted mind Perry is another one of his A+ picks and that is why Ted made him one of the highest compensated outside linebackers in the game.

Well, this will probably be it for Perry in Green Bay. This means Kyler Fackrell will pretty much be on the field all the time and that's a good thing. Results matter.

I mean, losing Perry this year is basically losing nothing. He's been out all year. Again.

If we get an injury at OLB, we're beyond thin there. Already scarily so...

Hope Looney can play a few snaps pretty well tomorrow night.

Only one final act left this weekend to kill my football soul. With apologies to those who struggle with mental health issues this time of year, it only seems appropriate to have a Looney on the field tomorrow night. They'll be plenty of us watching from home.

This move means Gute plans on not having him on the roster past March. Perry has a SUPER backloaded deal. The packers have the ability to move his prorated SB to this years cap by moving him to IR and can effectively erase his $14.7 mil cap hit in '19. His dead money will be minimal $2.7 mil by my calculation.
Perry is effectively done in GB.

Bure, I just read an article that said his dead money would be 11.something million. But they would save about 3.5 million on that loss next year on the cap as opposed to paying him his full $14.7 million.

That's if they cut him after June 1, the Packers would be on the hook for roster bonus and everything

They can wipe an additional $4.8 mill if cut before March And also add part of his prorated SB to this years cap by putting him on IR. Effectively a 2 year deal

You've completely lost me, Bure. No idea how you reached that or how a team can move his signing bonus to 2018. Even if GB could, it doesn't matter if we reduce the amount we rollover from 2018 to 2019 or just take the dead money in 2019.

What could be done is to release Perry March 13 or 14 (before his $4.8M roster bonus gets paid) and designate Perry as a June 1 release. That would mean a $3.7M dead money hit in 2018, $11.1M in cap savings, but we punt $7.4M in dead money into 2020.

I'd prefer just asking Perry to take a $4M to $5M salary cut for 2019. If he plays well, he can go back to making $11M cash after that. If we cut him, no one is going to give him a big deal, right? Who knows.

From Demovsky; it would actually be his roster bonus, but yes you're right they could defer part of his signing bonus

The Packers structured Perry's most recent contract, which contained an $18.5 million signing bonus, so that they could move on after the 2018 season and actually gain salary-cap space. Perry is due a $4.8 million roster bonus if he's on the team on the third day of the league year in 2019, so if the Packers cut him before that March date they would wipe that and his $5.2 million base salary off their cap.

They would have to count the remaining prorated portion of his signing bonus against their cap, but could defer some of that by designating him as a June 1 cut. If they cut him without the June 1 designation, they would save $3.6 million off their 2019 cap. If they used that designation, they would save $11.1 million.

The way I figure it, Ted was 4/11 on 1st rounders, the winners being Rodgers, Matthews, Bulaga and Clark.

The losers were Hawk, Raji (arguable), Sherrod, Perry, Datone, Ha-Ha, and Randall.

I put Raji in the loser column because his play, while stellar early on, deteriorated quickly and then he retired.

Of course, Ted was usually picking late in the round. Also, he got Rodgers, which kind of makes up for the Perry’s.

Raji was no miss... He left football for personal reasons and his family. No because he wasnt good. Datone Jones wasn't a bad player... And Randell really hasn't been bad since his actually playing his natural position at saftey.

Neither Datone Jones or Randall were anything close to what a 1st round pick should contribute. They would have been ok at 4th or 5th rounders based on their subsequent NFL production. Both played at a 2 or 3rd string player's level. Neither ever played their position at a starting player's level.

Thanks, Since '61

I beg to differ. Raji’s production had really deteriorated even before the torn bicep injury. He was still good but not the standout of 2010.

Any redraft would probably have:

Hawk 3rd round
Raji late 1st/early 2nd round
Perry 3rd round
Sherrod undrafted
Randall 3rd round
Ha-Ha 4th round
Jones undrafted

A redraft would have Rodgers 1st overall, Bulaga top 10, Matthews top 10.

A lot of 1st round draft picks are busts. Look at Treadwell in MN their 1st round draft pick WR or White in Chi. Compare those 2 to Thielen and Diggs an UDFA and a midround pick. How you draft in Rd 1 doesn't matter. Finding Rd 1 talent every draft is what matters. What round would you take Aaron Jones in with a redraft? Can you believe Williams was the 4th and Jones was the 5th? That Moore was the 4th and MVS was the 5th? Ted drafted some great talent in the mid rounds and gambled and lost in the early rounds overall he was a great GM and a Packer HOF. I think Gute could be better.

Randall isn't a bust in Cleveland, playing his natural position. Raji should have been a nose tackle, moving him to end made no sense. Datone didn't have a real position, to small for 3 - 4 end, to big for OLB. Perry was a DL converted to OLB. None of it worked. That's just the 1st rounders the 2nd round is also full of stupid "conversion" attempts, trying to convert Rollins to a football player, Mike Neal, Josh Jones, ect. Throw Ty Montgomery in that mix as a 3rd. We had a small amount of success converting college LT's to guards, but those players are long gone as well. No idea why TT was so obsessed with doing this m

Cut Perry. TT thought he was smarter. In TT we trust. (Horse s**t.) They were sold on the 3-4-4. But why go against the fans? Nobody picked Randall in a pre-draft mock. I still don't like the snub of James Jones. Also The failure to sign Williams and make him a safety. They then drafted Dix. Sure people can argue that things worked out. But it still put us behind the eight ball. Waiting for players to replace good packer players is stupid. If a packer player is happy and can still contribute. It's important to try and keep him for a little more money. I believe CM3 Is that player to compare whats best with the future. Williams and Jones left. (Brought back) Can't we just keep CM3 because he still helps the club. The money CM3 gets on the open market won't be breaking are bank. The packers will have room to sign CM3. As long as he dosn't get injured. I'd pay him until the next LB shows up. If Cm3 leaves, it's still not going to ease the hurt.

TBSS, I couldn't agree with you more! I have been saying the same thing for years. In a similar vein, TT was always trying to out think everyone including himself. Look at the punting situation a few years ago. He cut a fairly good punter( forgot his name, ended up kicking for Seattle for a number of years)) and replaced him with an older has been that (as I recall played lousy).

Good point, TT drafted better in the middle rounds when he was gambling with his picks, drafting college left tackles in the 4th to play inside (Sitton, Lang, "Tretter), the raw Finley at TE in the 3rd, and the picks you mentioned, than he did when making safe picks in the 1st round. Sherrod, Perry, Jones, Dix and Hawk were all highly rated and they all would have been drafted soon after the Packers picked. For example, Hawk got drafted at 5, the Lions drafted LB Ernie Sims at 9, if Hawk had been available, the Lions would have taken him over Sims. Gute seems to be similar, picking receivers in 4th, 5th and 6th, and his 1st (Alexander), which was a little bit of a gamble, looks like a great pick

No one considers that AJ Hawk was drafted as an athletic ROLB with above average movement skills to play in space in Bob Sanders 4-3 defense. When Capers was hired, Hawk was asked to transition into an ILB role in his 3-4, where he needed to bulk up and become a strong body capable of engaging and taking on the blocks of fullbacks and guards to keep the other ILB clean.

All this guy did was everything that was asked of him. And he did it well.

I thought thegreatReynoldo said if we cut Perry, it's an $11M dead money hit, but ESPN's Rob Demovsky said this:

"The Packers structured Perry's most recent contract, which contained an $18.5 million signing bonus, so that they could move on after the 2018 season and actually gain salary-cap space. Perry is due a $4.8 million roster bonus if he's on the team on the third day of the league year in 2019, so if the Packers cut him before that March date they would wipe that and his $5.2 million base salary off their cap."

Oops.

I heard James Reynolds is going to disavow any knowledge of TGR.

I hadn't considered using a June 1 designation, possibly because going that route means GB doesn't get the $11.1M cap savings until June 1, and can't use it to sign FAs in March, April, or May. Still, that would be useful if another Mack situation pops up during the summer. Demovsky doesn't mention that his scheme punts $7.4M dead money into 2020, but deferring money as long as the cap limit is growing makes sense.

I'm pretty darn sure that releasing Perry with a 6/1 designation means he wouldn't technically be on the roster on March 15: thus there is no trigger requiring payment of the $4.8M bonus. After all, after designating teams can fill that player's roster spot immediately and the player can sign elsewhere immediately.

Putting Perry on IR increased out cap space by $112.5K since he will only have been active for 9 games and his LTBE game-active bonus is for 12 games ($37.5K per game).

So the article might be "What Rossonero wrote, + 7.4M dead money gets punted into 2020, and we can't use the $11.1M cap savings in March, April, or May."

Thanks Reynoldo. That makes sense to me.

Now that Perry is likely done, I hope the savings are used to bring back Clay Matthews -- for the right price. He could make a nice pairing at ILB with Blake Martinez.

What if Fackrell gets hurt next year? Defenses will be able to focus on him more if we let Clay and Perry go.

I'd also like to see Muhammad Wilkerson back on another prove it deal. The list of 2019 defensive line FAs isn't that great:

Gilbert and Fackrell could be better than what we've had if 'the light's comes on for both. We definitely need to add talent there for next year though.

I think we set at WR, CB, DL and RB. ILB I'd OK, if not spectacular. OL, S and OLB need serious upgrades though.

You said it 4zone. OL upgrade is desperately needed. The only reason the OL looks as good as it does is Rodgers. Put a average QB in there and you'll see exactly what I mean.

My Biggest complaint with the Packers Ol is that they can't make plays when they are really needed. Isn't that really the criteria for a good vs average player(s)? How do they respond when you are really needed? Our Ol is terrible in those situations. Pass blocking on 3rd and long, short yardage calls!

If you don't believe me. Go back and study the previous games this year...hell go back the previous 4- 5 years.

I could make a prediction today (bet if you will with Folding money!) If the Packers make a serious effort to upgrade their Ol line. The vast number of their troubles would be gone! Running game really gets off the ground...opens up the passing game Rodgers actually gets to step into a throw! What a novel idea? Offense stays on the field longer! Defense doesn't get beat up in the running game....Better pass rush...etc....etc...etc (like the King and I LOL)

They have to fill a lot of holes. This team needs a huge offseason. Get 2-3 guys in free agency. Then they need to pick as many players in this draft class. They have a ton of edge rushers and front 4 lineman. All needs, veterans can help form this team and those young play makers can play at a high level. Perry is milking out this contract and that is disappointing.

Took me awhile to get comfortable with the whole BPA approach, but when players at various positions have very similar grades, I think you gotta go with need. I mean, do you pass up the next Patrick Peterson because you “don’t need a corner”? Heck no. There are lots of places on the GB roster where a really good player could find a home.
When TT took Jordy, they were already strong at WR, and that turned out alright. Just gotta let things develop, see what happens.
OR
Gute gets aggressive in FA and/or trades up in the draft for what he thinks are the couple missing pieces. I believe this is called “going all in”.
