Packers Select Wide Receiver Amari Rodgers in 2021 NFL Draft - Round Three

Packers select WR Amari Rodgers in the third round of 2021 NFL Draft.

Amari Rodgers, Clemson, Wide Receiver

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

 { 5'9 1/2", 212 lbs, 4.52, 33.5" vertical, 10-8 broad jump}

CAREER NOTES:

The son of former Tennessee and NFL quarterback Tee Martin nearly signed with USC, where Martin was coaching at that time. He decided to move from Knoxville to Clemson, however, as a top-100 national recruit and two-time Tennessee Mr. Football Award winner. Rodgers played in 14 games as a true freshman (19 receptions, 123 yards, 6.5 average; two punt returns, 15 yards, 7.5 average) before moving into the starting lineup for all 15 games during the team's national championship season. He garnered honorable mention All-ACC honors as an all-purpose player in 2018 (55 receptions, 575 yards, 10.5 average, four touchdowns; 39 punt returns, 299 yards, 7.7 average, one touchdown). Rodgers suffered a torn ACL the following March but only missed one game of his junior year (10 starts in 14 appearances) to garner honorable mention all-conference accolades as a receiver (30 receptions, 426 yards, 14.2 average, four touchdowns) and all-purpose player (18 punt returns, 151 yards, 8.4 average, two rushes, 50 yards, one touchdown). With the departure of Tee Higgins and the loss of Justyn Ross due to injury, Rodgers became Trevor Lawrence's top target in 2020, leading the Tigers with 77 receptions and 1,020 receiving yards (13.3 per) while tying for the team lead with seven touchdown catches. The first-team All-ACC selection also scored once as a rusher (2-50-25.0) and returned punts (nine returns, 64 yards, 7.1 average). He accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl. -- by Chad Reuter

SCOUTING REPORTS:

"Compact slot target who thrived at Clemson with his ability to create chunk plays out of short catch-and-runs and take the top off defenses with his speed. Rodgers has a running back's stout lower body, providing power and balance to break tackles and rumble through contact with the ball in his hands. His ball skills are pretty good, but he can go from magnificent catch to focus drop in a single drive. Rodgers uses speed alterations inside the route and a sudden burst to top speed to create deep separation from coverage. He's not as effective at separating underneath against tight man coverage and will need to prove himself in that regard." -NFL.com

"Amari Rodgers was a factor in 2018 and 2019 but saved his best for last as he hauled in 77 receptions for 1,020 yards and seven touchdowns during his final campaign at Clemson in 2020. The veteran of the receiving corps in 2020, Rodgers was the go-to guy for the Tigers’ offense during his last season. Rodgers is a slot receiver that is built like a running back. He thrived with manufactured touches and then using his physicality, burst, vision, and decisiveness to work after the catch. As his production increased as a senior, so did his role in the offense. 2020 saw Rodgers produce more down the field in addition to his work in the short to intermediate areas of the field. He has reliable hands, plays a physical brand of football, and is a good athlete. When it comes to identifying areas of growth for Rodgers, developing his route tree and finding more consistency when challenged at the catch point stand out. Rodgers lacks length and struggles to extend his catch radius which creates some limitations. Rodgers has a chance to be a featured slot receiver in the NFL for an offense predicated on timing." -The Draft Network

"Rodgers is another player Green Bay would have to bend its “rules” for—he would not meet the height threshold. He’ll likely end up as a long-term primary slot receiver. Clemson didn’t run the ball with Rodgers a ton, but when they did it was very efficient. He’s a “manufactured touches” kind of player, but his running-back build and ability after the catch is special. Many of those touches were manufactured because Rodgers didn’t consistently create separation. As a gadget player, Rodgers also returned a large volume of punts at Clemson but was not incredibly successful." - from Andy Herman in the CheeseheadTV 2021 Draft Guide

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

Packers fans, this is your slot receiver. I spoke with Rodgers at Clemson's pro day and this is what he had to say about a potential fit in Green Bay.

"I definitely see myself as a Randall Cobb-type of player being used in the slot, jet sweeps, and the return game as well."

The Packers traded up from 92 to 85 to get Rodgers. Knowing they needed another wide receiver, Green Bay picked their first one since 2018. He totaled 181 receptions for 2,144 yards and 15 touchdowns in four seasons. Rodgers predominately lined up in the slot where he showcased his footwork and reliable hands. The Packers definitely strayed away from their typical size requirements, as Rodgers stands at just 5'9". However, he is extremely muscular and has a compact build. Built like a running back, at his pro day, he took handoffs out of the backfield to show his versatility. Not sure he will do that in the NFL, but he is able to slip tackles and put on the jets in the open field. In a gadget role, Rodgers will be a natural playmaker. Just get the ball in his hands and watch him work. From the slot, he will be a weapon in the quick game. Rodgers can also test defenses deep with his ball tracking and ability to rise up and snare passes. Not to mention, he also has experience as a punt returner. On 68 returns, Rodgers totaled 529 yards, one touchdown, and a 7.8 average. In Rodgers, Green Bay will have a dynamic weapon that can play a variety of roles.

COMMENTARY:

First off, Rodgers is really good value in the third round. Second, finally, the Packers have addressed receiver, and they traded up to do so. Green Bay moved up seven spots to select the Clemson wideout, so they were clearly high on him. Rodgers is a guy who can separate on his own and create after the catch. He's not identical to Cobb, but their playstyles are similar. He will be a great compliment to Davante Adams and the rest of the receiving core. Rodgers is a true slot, which they haven't had since Cobb in 2018. It will be interesting to see how Matt LaFleur plans to get him involved, but right away he has the ability to contribute on special teams.

Yes we got Montgomery. I looking forward to him running in MMs offense. He has a small Catch Radius and won't make the contested catch. And when you think we traded up to get him with a forth . Its just an outstanding selection for Love.

He is Cobb, who was similarly limited as a receiver when he arrived.
Wasn’t my choice but in retrospect a good one. Who knew we do have a slot “type” after all.

The SHE rating of 11 is a bonus endorsement.

I saw a scouting report that said he struggles to get off the line. Also it said he was not consistent. That doesn't sound like Cobb to me.

Try not to just read the negatives and also recall that Cobb likely well exceeded expectations as a receiver at the time he was drafted.

I have a professional scouting report (an organization teams hire) that says "He will be able to get open from the slot and he knows how to finish. A smart, heady player who excels at getting open on all levels of the route tree."

Cobb did really well 1 year and got paid. After that always hurt multiple games a year. Never lived up to his expensive salary. I liked Cobb, but those are the facts of his tenure. Hopefully this guy is not hurt a quarter or more of every year. Cobb was dynamic when healthy......what a shame.

He will be in motion or work the split off the line and get in space. The DB will have be all hands like Jackson to cover this guy . He is quick with his step. Did you watch any of Clemson's game the past three years?

I HATE that Gute gave up a 4th to move up 8 spots in the 3rd round. That's 4 so far in his short tenure. The guy is simply not patient enough to be in charge of a NFL draft room. And it was a royal screw job according to the chart. A 5th would be more like it.

A data point and data are two different things. I'm talking data. The data that says in order to maintain a healthy cap, you need at least 30-35 players on nothing contracts---rookie contracts. That's 8-12 rookies per year you need to add, depending on various factors. More draft choices give you a better chance of hitting that mark. Less draft choices increases the dependency on UDFA to pick up that slack.

The point is not that trading up is automatically bad. Making it a habit is bad. So giving an example of it working is sort of irrelevent to me. Gute has now passed up the chance to find 5 players with picks in rounds 3-4. Maybe one of them would have been even better than Alexander. That's a tall order, to be sure because Alexander is really good. But certainly a guy like Bahk (a 4th rounder) would be in the running. Since we don't know who he passed on, you can't say with any assurance it is impossible. Would another guy like Mike Daniels on the roster be nice? He was another 4th.

Either way, finding players in those rounds is not particularly hard. Gute cannot continue to give away those opportunities every single year.

Well, you are ignoring the fact that Gutey was ready to take him at pick 62. I'm also guessing that the Pack had a strong suspicion that he would not fall to their R3 pick. So the trade was to secure a pick valued at 62 at 94. To do so they gave up a R4 pick. So yes, a 4th was high cost to move up a small amount at the end of R3, it is not high cost when evaluated that we insured that we got a late R2 value in late R3. So I have zero problem with giving up the 4th in this instance, assuming Gute has the player correctly evaluated. This could be first time Gutey has produced 3 players in first 3 rounds who make large contributions in year 1.

Talking about this case or that one is checkers. I'm talking chess. If you want to justify each individual move up, that's fine. I don't give a happy shit about them individually. I am talking about a pattern over time of shrinking draft classes. 10 man draft class beats a 7 man draft choice. So keep moving up, that's fine. But balance it with moving down at other places.

I am tired of positions being ignored as well. The difference is that I understand the repeated pattern of using two picks on one guy makes the situation worse. Moving up contributes to positions being ignored. If you pay 2 picks to draft one guy, that automatically means that 2nd pick cannot be used on another spot.

For example, had they been patient and drafted Love with their own pick last year, they might have drafted Tyler Johnson. And then they would have the 2nd developmental WR I want. And Aaron Rodgers might not be so pissed. Hell, maybe Tyler Johnson makes a difference in the 4th Q of the NFC CG. Either way, they might not have needed to trade up for Amari Rodgers. And they might be able to use 130 on that DL prospect we both want now.

No argument from me on that. 4 of the 6 picks were 6th rounders. Another was a 4th. That's not exactly massive draft capital even if the volume of picks is high.

Good O-line makes the entire offense work, even with questionable skill position players. Bad o-line tanks the offense, no matter how good the skill position players are.

While his PR production was average at 7+ yards per return, he effortlessly catches punts, doesn't muff and knows when to fair catch or head up field. All traits the Pack had trouble with. So yeah, he may not be top ten in the NFL , but he should be a solid upgrade.

You understand that teams ratings vary from those of the pundits? You also realize that he is being picked as an option, receiver and returner, not purely as a WR? That review is as a pure receiver. Perhaps the reason for some of the difference?

I was hoping for a CB, WR and DL with our first 3 picks.
We took a CB, a C and a WR. So 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.

Gute may have added 3 starters to our roster with these picks. I think Myers, like Linsley starts on Day 1. Same for Rodgers in the slot. Stokes may take some time but I can see him starting over King by mid-season if not sooner.

So far so good with our 2021 draft.

Hoping that in the end we’ll be watching Rodgers to Rodgers. Thanks, Since ‘61

Stokes will get starters snaps to start in nickel and dime....which the Packers under Barry will play more than base 3-4.

But I see him making it very hard to keep him off the field and he may take King's spot during 2021.

I am thrilled they have added a day 2 WR. Like Myers in the 2nd, Amari Rodgers didn't make his way into any of the draft sims I ran. But I don't presume that I know more than the Packers scouting staff when it comes to players.

He profiles as something that ML can put to good use on offense and increases the competition in the WR room that really needed it, So aside from the above rant about giving up too much to move up, I like what they did once they made that dumb choice.

You do realize the "dumb choice" to move up secured the pick of Rodgers, right? Did you also know Gutey had made several attempts to trade up to get him? Teams were interested but when their pick approached their guy was available and the teams said "no trade back...we have our guy."

Gutey said he was working the phones most of the third round to get Rodgers in a trade up but teams kept backing out until TN finally said yes. I do not think was a "dumb choice" to give up a few trade value points to get a player that fills a huge hole and will comtribute immediately.

You make it sound like Gutey just made one call to TN and offered the 4th in overpayment to get him. Not what happened.

Gutey also said he had two players selected as his primary targets yesterday....Meyers and Rodgers...he got them both in Green Bay.

Good day!

Yes, I realize that dumb choice secured Rodgers. I've been talking about the consistent pattern of moving up with increasing alarm since he did it for Savage. So yes, I know full well he gave up a 3rd for Alexander. And (2) 4s for Savage. And another 4 for Love. And another 4 for Rodgers.

I know that is 5 possible depth players, or perhaps budding stars, that are not on the roster. A roster that has holes at DB, DL, WR, and LB. And arguably more places, too. Those 5 players not added might have filled one or more of those holes. Do you realize that?

Here is a hypothetical that neither of us, or anyone else, will ever answer. If Rodgers made it to 85, how do we know he would not have made it to 92? Gute always spins a good yarn about why that chance cannot be taken. And it has produced a roster with more holes than can be filled in one draft and cap woes he have not seen since the Sherman days.

He's a good value pick, but if we had to give up a fourth-rounder to get him, it's not as much of a value. It's nice the Packers waived their height "requirement"; we already have enough tall receivers, and besides, three other teams saw fit to take shorter slot types in the second round. Let's hope Amari can be effective returning punts because we've been lacking in this area for a long, long time.

Let's also hope this is the end of the offensive selections; once again, the DL has been relegated to the back burner. Apparently Gute/MLF think we are one speedy CB prospect and one DC away from becoming, in Gute's words, "a dominant defense." So we'll really have to see how that fanciful assessment holds up. I know it was an ominous sign when Gute re-signed King, Lancaster, and Redmond....Barry had better be a miracle worker.

"Let's also hope this is the end of the offensive selections;"

No. I won't hope that. I want another WR, a full-sized one. A developmental TE would not be a bad late pick. The way ML uses RBs and FBs, if the right one is there, that's a viable choice. You can never have too much OL help so adding a 2nd if the board lines up is not a bad thing. And I guess they might need a backup QB if the hissy fit Rodgers is throwing is real,

That's not to say that I don't see needs on the other side of the ball either. DL is acute, Another CB would be nice. Edge and ILB could use more talent. I'm not thrilled with the production of the backup Safeties. I sorta like the rooks from last year to step up but not enough to close the door on drafting another.

Basically, nothing is off the table for me. That's what the draft is all about, building up the competition for roster spots all over the roster.

We only have a few low picks left! Okay, I forgot about the RB, but we certainly don't need any more WRs, FBs/HBs/TEs (we have 5), or OL (we have a lifetime supply, I think). We already had the #1 scoring offense and #5 yardage offense last year and just replaced Linsley in addition to re-signing A. Jones. If they need another backup QB, sign a journeyman.

I would be nice to address the acute need at some point, don't you think? The last time we used higher than a fourth round pick on a DL was M. Adams in 2017; ditto with ILB and Burks in 2018. Maybe we have some hope with Keke, but for the most part, it's frustrating to watch the same issues go unfixed year after year.

Did you see where the Lions drafted. It makes all the difference in the world. Its tough being practically last in every rd.

Losing a 4th to get the guy you want when that forth is more like a 5th even is no big deal IMO.

How many 4,5,6 & 7th rds make the team let alone contribute much. Some do, not saying none but after we name the few that hit we can start naming all the ones we forgot about already. plus when you have such a good roster it makes it even harder to upgrade.

IMO go with the pick 2 more CB, WRs and ILB and whatever DI (none really left by the time the Packers draft)

Tre Brown (CB)/Fehoko (WR)/McDuffie (ILB) out of Boston College, Zech CB out of Texas tech and if a decent DI does fall in the 4th depending on who take him as well. Tyree Gilispee is pretty good safety.

It certainly is frustrating that some of the simmering issues never seem to get the attention they deserve. That's been driven by a long, rich history of busts at DB in recent history. Once again, they had to invest there.

Hopefully the Packers can add the right guy at the right spot tommorrow, I'd worry more about the right guy than the right spot on day 3. Drafting a guy that cannot play will do no good at all.

splitpea,
You have to remember. Gutekunst is a Ted Thompson disciple, DL and LB are foreign to them, they have no interest. He thinks he can will, or 'Develop' a dominant defense, but that takes players.
Worse yet, Gutekunst is mimicking Thompson in his treatment of his MVP QB, what is wrong with these guys? Can't they see what the rest of the league does with their best players?
And, even worse, is that Gutekunst is a coward, he's had opportunities to pull the trigger and has wimped out each time he's had a chance to grab a guy that could have really changed this team. That, and his present "he's under contract" treatment of Rodgers is what's put us where we are. Pffft, even Thompson moved up to take CMIII and knew better than to draft a 'can't make the game day roster 3rd stringer' to sit behind Favre.
The final straw is that, in reality, this all falls in Murphy's court, the power grabbing Real Estate Mogul that could care less about football as long as he leaves what he considers his legacy on Packers' history.
The organization is a mess!
Somewhere, Bob Harlan and Ron Wolf are shaking their heads in disbelief.

Wanted a DL, but really weren’t falling close early. In a poor draft for them, today is the day where there is some value there. The only ILB really worth the effort have gone way earlier than our pick, except the tweener JOK. Without knowing what Barry wants, hard to be categorical, but it’s probable we didn’t see value in a 215 ILB.

So are are the ghosts of Lombardi and Starr, who are ready to make a visit on a cold dark night. Rod wants to leave a 28-8 team that pays him an outstanding amount and took a chance on him when everybody was passing him up because we dared to take a developmental QB. I feel bad for the rest of the team. If he stays , he will have some explaining to do in the locker room.

So is this the Rodgers who will be with the Packers for the foreseeable future?
It's a good night for me: Brewers beat the Dodgers; Bucks over the Bulls even without Giannis; and the Packers take a speedy slot receiver.
From the highlight package, it's difficult to tell how shifty he is because most of the receptions shown are downfield. He didn't have to be shifty on the plays in which he was simply blowing past defensive backs for long touchdowns.
We'll see how he does working the middle of the field to get open for shorter receptions that convert third downs. He seems to have good hands. How agile is he twisting and diving for the football?
Rodgers seems like a freakish athlete to be as short as he is but also so solid in his build. With his muscular legs, he still seems quick on his feet. He may be more durable than the typical gadget receiver of slighter build.
I'm excited. It seems he may be right up there in electricity with the other slot guys taken before him, and ready to contribute some big plays from game one this upcoming season.
Interested to find out what other fans here at CHTV think.

He's not as electric because he's a lot heavier. But he is a tough guy who can handle the middle of the field and the contact that comes with it. He can definitely make twisting catches. I would have thought Rodgers might have landed with the Ravens, as his father is their WRs coach.

Stocky WR-RB frame. Immediate starter. Good route runner and RB vision helps set secondary up for misses.
Plays faster than the posted 40 time....that's a good thing to see. Built to take a hit and keep churning. Played for a very good team. Should be very good in the Slot. Experience in the backfield also. Now if the crummy Lions don't pick up another DL, maybe we can fill our DL draft musts and go get a punter that can replace one who misfires all too often.

Mathbomb had Rodgers @ 4.52 in the 40 on his RAS sheet. I recall his profile on this site cited a number more like the mid 4.4s, like 4,45 or something. A tenth of the second is not a long time. But it kinda is, for this. We'll see what we see. If he's getting chased down, well, that won't be good.

I can't wait to see him show which number is right. I'm excited they finally made an investment at WR before day 3. Davante Adams was the last one. If Rodgers turns out half as good, he'll be a valuable asset for either Aaron Rodgers or Jordon Love.

4.52 seems to be the time generally accepted by the scouting organizations, but there are several contemporary records of the 4.45 ish times out there. I see no hint at the reason for that dichotomy.

One thing I notice is his ability to accelerate and decelerate rapidly. Raw speed isn’t his thing, but catching him isn’t that easy. That should help him as a runner and returner. I’m not sure he has the speed to be a great kick returner. Cobb ran a 4.46 40 just for reference, while Micah Hyde ran a 4.56 at the combine.

In your example, the people that want to give up picks to move up would have the wrong opinion.

With his first three picks last year and first three this year Gute has added, I believe, five guys who will be important players this coming year. A possible starting corner, starting center, starting slot receiver, back-up RB, blocking H-back, and If Rodgers leaves... a starting QB, making him six for six. Pretty good drafting. Or horrible.

The "three starters form a quality draft" rule has to be amended to "quality starters." Sometimes guys earn starting roles because they're a GM's pet project. That doesn't mean they've necessarily earned the role.

If Jordan Love is the starter in 2021, there is no doubt he'll be substandard compared to what we're all used to from the QB position. He'll be getting the job because he's next in line when ARod was moved.

Rodgers has two options play for the Packers or retire. He is not going to get paid if he goes on strike. Most football managers do not include players in decision making. The coach and his staff has had more impact on the picks than any player. Their scouts know what the team wants. Gutekunst admitted he should have communicated better with Rodgers. Rodgers was showing signs of decline so they draft for the future and Rodgers studies film and works on mechanics and becomes MVP. The one thing he forgot to do was look at his tendency to pass more than run on RPO's especially to Adams. He has done this for years and did so in the championship game after running the ball got the team inside the 10 yard line.

100% agree that Rodgers was showing signs of slowing down when the Pack drafted Love. You can hate it now but it was the right thing to do. It ignited Rodgers to up his game (might not have happened without the Love pick).
Another thing is the GM and Coach will pick guys for their system and most of us do not fully understand the needs of that system. We use conventional NFL thinking and we create expectations for the draft based on our group think. The Packers (and 49ers) are operating in a different mode than other NFL teams - they will draft players we don't expect. Get used to it.

All though I agree , I can’t blame him. He played for YRS with no real RB in a pass happy offense. Then a running game gets established, other teams catch on to that so he goes to his playmaker Adams. Again ...can’t blame him. Did they give Brady, Manning a bunch of rookie RBs to work with? No. Did they give them a bunch of rookie WRs to work with? No. Anytime Brady or Manning played teams afforded them at least 1 Cadillac WR and 1 Cadillac RB. Not even to mention the Olines they were afforded to literally spend all day surveying the field. Rodgers has had bits and pieces of that but nowhere near the level. I’m just glad they picked up a true center and a good slot. IN Lafluers offense a true slot is a needed piece. Now if we can escape this draft with a DL ore 2 I’ll be totally happy. I believe some of the defensive struggles were not totally on the CBs as DL pressure has ALOT to do with cb performance.

You need to check Colt & Pats draftees after they were successful. I see plenty of ponies. Also, they didn't complain and left when their time was up to help the team , not after winning seasons and an MVP. Poor comparisons.

Word on the street. Rodgers is done in Green Bay. Two things packer fans missed. That the Packer organization don't know how to treat their best player. And - Barry Sanders walked away from the Lions. I expect Rodgers will show up for his Bonus, and then say good bye to his teammates.

Packer organization is good people but that doesn't mean they are incapable of some bad decision-making. They disrespected their 36 yo HOF QB by using two draft picks, including a rd 1 pick, to take a swing on a successor to the throne. Why? Rodgers had a new contract and they follow that up by not going all-in to win with the old guy? Instead they devote an entire draft to investing in players to win with later, after the current stars are gone? What sense does that make? And they utterly fail to discuss the matter with the current occupant of the throne even when it is well known that said occupant does not take such slights well. Sorry but the entire FO walked into this one. This will cost Murphy his job or it should. Gutey may or may not survive but he is learning a valuable lesson about how to treat HOF players if you want to keep them around.

Boo hoo. The Packers thought about doing what's best for the Packers long term future.

Part of being a football player is understanding that football teams are constantly bringing in new players, and that's how it goes - because every football player is one injury away from retirement, and time waits for no man.

I see no reason to fire the President because the team's HOF QB is an insecure head case.

I love planning for the long term future, but in this case they were at the absolute cusp of the holy grail. You mean you want to give up a potential title in order to remain competitive 3,4,5 years down the road? How long has it been since the Lions, Vikings, or Bears were this close, and what was the main ingredient missing? A dominant HOF QB. Ok maybe not for the Lions..

Anyway about 29 other teams would have given their right nut for the 2020 Aaron Rodgers and done everything to get over the top, whilst the Packers looked to 2022 and beyond. It didn't make sense to me, but hey I'm just a fan.

Archie I don't know if it will cost Murphy his job but it could cost Gute and MLF their jobs especially if the Packers flail around below the .500 mark after Aaron Rodgers is gone for a few seasons.

One way or the other Gute needs to resolve this before TC. If he fails to either complete a contract extension or to trade Rodgers by the beginning of TC that could be the worst case scenario. If Rodgers holds out it could split the locker room. As I mentioned on another thread yesterday some of the veteran players who have either re-signed with Green Bay or came to Green Bay because Rodgers gives them a good shot at an SB every season will be losing that opportunity. That could evolve into a very difficult situation for MLF and Gute during the preseason and worse if not resolved by the regular season.

Gute has stated recently that they will not trade Rodgers after having previously told Rodgers that they would trade him during this offseason after Murphy said "We're not idiots." So, I agree with you Archie that the Packers FO, Gute in particular, has completely mishandled the relationship with Rodgers and for nothing more than poor management and communication skills on Gute's part. No excuse since Gute has been in GB as long as Rodgers and should have made it a point to forge a trusting relationship with him over the years. That's just basic relationship/management 101. Even less is basic respect for other people.

This team has probably just added 3 players to their roster who will likely start during 2021 and possibly be enough to get this team over the hump and now they are going to lose Aaron Rodgers!!! How stupid will that be???!!!

Gute can either work this out or we can keep thinking and building for the future as the seasons keep ticking by. Without Aaron Rodgers, (need to be specific now) we're not getting back to an SB or maybe even back to the playoffs for a while to come.
As I have posted before, losing Aaron Rodgers now would one of the dumbest moves in the history of sports, because this team is close, very close to at least an SB quality roster. Pull out Aaron Rodgers either because of injury or stupidity and we're out of contention. End of story. Thanks, Since '61

"Gute has stated recently that they will not trade Rodgers after having previously told Rodgers that they would trade him during this offseason after Murphy said "We're not idiots.""

Do we KNOW that Rodgers was told they would trade him this off season? If he was actually told that and then GB reneged, I can understand AR being upset. I just have a hard time believing they told him that, knowing that trading him would have serious negative consequences to their cap, not to mention having a serious drop-off in talent at the QB1 position.

So much noise out there. Damn near impossible to know what is accurate.

It was reported that by Trey Wingo formerly of ESPN that Gute told Rodgers he was going trade him this offseason. And that was after Murphy made his "We're not idiots" comment.

I posted on other threads yesterday that if this is accurate it answers many of the questions about how things have reached the point we are at. 13 Times it is definitely possible that this is all noise, like much of the other media BS out there.

I believe ( and I'm hoping) that all of this recent blowup beginning on draft day is just posturing by both sides during contract negotiations. Rodgers wants out, Gute won't make a trade, let's see who blinks first kind of stuff.
As far as I know the Packers and Rodgers are still talking, with a detour for the current draft. If that's true this could all be much ado about nothing. I've also read that Rodgers agent said he wants out and not Rodgers himself. So who knows what is really going on.

I'm taking hope from the Packers draft selections of a Center to replace Linsley and an actual Slot receiver that these are pro-Rodgers picks. Again who knows it just be how the board fell and other players the Packers preferred at other positions were already gone. The Packers will tell us they got the guys they wanted all along.

We can just watch and wait as this plays out. Thanks, Since '61

Oppy there is also a long line of EX-NFL GMs who would have literally given an arm and a leg to have Aaron Rodgers or a QB like him on their rosters. I don't know about Murphy but if Gute loses Aaron Rodgers now, with the addition of 3 potential starters coming from this draft Gute could very quickly join those ranks of ex-NFL GMs.

This roster is very close to being an SB quality roster but take Rodgers off the roster and we're out. of contention.

Turning this roster over to Love at this point would be like giving the keys to James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 to someone who has never driven a car before and telling them to drive through NYC. It's not going to happen. At least not for a while if ever. But hey we're looking at the long term future. The problem is as we've seen during the 70s-80s that future could in fact be a very long term. Thanks, Since '61

Respectfully, it sounds like most Packers fans claim this is nothing like James Bond handing the keys to the Aston Martin over to a unlicensed teen. Most Packers fans claim that this is Toyota Camry being driven by Mario Andretti. I tend to agree with the Aston Martin perspective, though, except that instead of being armed with weapons, it's been designed with driver assist features and safety measures.

Stretch on the analogy, but I think you know what I'm saying. At any rate, what I believe is this team has been built in such a way that transferring to the young, inexperienced QB will have minimal fall out. Sound OL, fantastic RBs, good to great options at TE/RBs/H-backs as release valve targets, Tall, rangy, big bodied WRs that make large targets. The offensive system is built to take pressure off of a QB.

The defense is almost where you need it to be; they have the ability to pressure opposing QBs and are probably one DB away from having a near lockdown backfield (might have just got him). They need one more piece on the DL or LB corps to really become a clock-control team that takes a ton of pressure off of the QB.

This is a team that has been built from the ground up with the notion that Rodgers time was ending soon. Rodgers may not like that notion, but frankly, Rodgers, in my opinion, made his bed over the last 5-6 years. I personally believe when LeFleur was hired and some of Rodgers' dissidence still remained, the decision was set in stone, that Rodgers was on limited time.

Rodgers play in 2020 was exceptional, and he seemed at times to fully buy in to the system. However, I believe it was only due to the fact the Love pick was the first time Rodgers grasped the concept that he can't continue to be petulant and disruptive and expect the Packers to put up with it. I also believe in retrospect the entire 2020 season's change of heart was a calculated PR move leading to the point we're at now, which is "It's either Gute's out, or I'm out."

We used to talk about how Brett Favre would try to hold the team captive every offseason with his talk of retirement, only to come back into the fold (after the dog days of summer passed), and it made it impossible for the team to make decisions to prepare for the inevitable future. Aaron Rodgers is now doing the same thing, except in a much more brazen fashion.

I am of the opinion (an opinion I have shared specific reasons for over the last 5 years that I don't feel the need to repeat here and now) that Aaron Rodgers has been a problem in Green Bay for many years. There was a last ditch effort to appease the HOF QB and get things back on the right track when they fired McCarthy / hired LeFleur (don't be the problem), and Rodgers, while somewhat improved (talking about attitude here, which led to performance) was still acting out behind the scene (again, I have pointed to indications of this previously). That was the last straw and the decision to move forward was made, which brought us into 2020.

Rodgers in 2020 was the kid who was rotten all day long, was sat down by his parents in the afternoon and told he's getting one more shot at being a good boy, then during what was a nice family dinner decided to start throwing his peas across the room, and now he can't believe he's not getting dessert and is throwing a tantrum. He's screaming that if he doesn't get dessert, he's not going to school in the morning.

Do you feed the boy dessert and fault the parents for holding the child accountable for his actions? Or do you stand your ground and send him to bed without pie?

I understand AR gives us the best chance to win now. But I think he's been a problem behind closed doors, and he made this situation himself. I don't think you cave to a "I won't work while he works here, it's either him or me" demand.

I think at some point, principle must take president over winning. It sucks that the line seems to be drawn here, now. However, I don't think this is a mess made by the front office. I think it is a mess made by our HoF QB, and unfortunately, he's not on the principle side of the line.

Can't have a single player holding a team hostage.

Also, in many years we hear the complaining about the GM outsmarting himself by seeking players from small schools. Georgia, Ohio State, Clemson. If nothing else, these guys are coming in with plenty of primetime experience.

Last time I checked, our Team is the Green Bay Packers not the Green Bay Rodgers. From the time we drafted him, we have given Rodgers the world. So I have a hard time understanding anyone who says that we are “disrespecting” him. He’s under contract, period. Just because he doesn’t like the way the sausage is made does not mean that we are disrespecting him. Dudes, he made his ridiculous announcement the day before or on draft day. Talk about an absolute douche....Way to go Rodgers....let down your teammates.....nice leadership. I hope the Jeopardy people notice the true colors of Rodgers and rescind any future offer to host the show!!

As far as the draft, I’m taking the Nagler approach on the draft and feel confident that the guys we have drafted so far will help our team!!

They spent 5 picks on pass catchers on day 2 over the 4 years that began when Rodgers was drafted. That is a massive investment that was no small part of Rodgers early success. To be sure, they have placed greater expectation on him as he became more veteran. Just like other NFL teams have handled great QB. To suggest the Pats & Saints lavished weapons on Brady and Brees is laughable.

They have paid attention to protecting him with (2) OTs in round 1. They found him an elite LT and made sure he didn't get away. Last year, he won the MVP but the 5 guys protecting him were no small part of that. He's smart enough to understand that I think. If he doesn't understand that, his smarts are overblown.

They lavished money upon him with contracts that usually set a new bar for QBs. They did not give him a new contract every year as others raised that bar. That would be impossible from a cap perspective. That's how the cap game works. Latest contract sets the bar. For his part, he needed that "respect" of the high $$ contract. For as much as I hate citing Tom Brady as the be-all, end-all, Brady never did.

In exchange for all that, they expected to get a player, not someone in football administration that gets oversight in draft decisions and the makeup of the coaching staff. The crux of the diva's issue is that they did not give him that last little bit. Screw him.

OK screw him. Explain to me how you expect the Packers to win games in 2021 and beyond. Love will probably throw more picks in a game that Rodgers throws in an entire season. Why would any decent Fa want to come to Green Bay when they have no chance of reaching the playoffs never mind an SB with Rodgers gone.

We may not like Rodgers antics or his off the field behavior but who cares? The only thing that matters is what he does on the field and like him or not Rodgers is one of the best to ever step on a football field at what he does.
So to me that means if you're the Packers GM or FO you deal with his BS and move on. You don't allow it to fester until it blows up in your face like it did on Friday. That's what the GM is paid to do. If he can't deal with a HOF player maybe he should NOT be an NFL GM.

I'm not saying Rodgers is not culpable, he is, but problem resolutions one of the many areas that management is paid for. You neglect to communicate effectively with your best player and you pay a price. And if this goes bad
we as fans will pay a price as well maybe as badly as the 70s -80s. You want Rodgers gone that's fine. Just be prepared to accept the consequences. If you're whining about him now and he is the MVP what will you be doing when the Packers go 4-12 for next 3 plus seasons or longer? Thanks, Since '61

I was a bigger fan of Aaron Rodgers when the Packers were still fighting to become a playoff team than I am of the current Aaron Rodgers who seems to undermine the coaches and makes passive aggressive comments to the media at any opportunity.

I was most satisfied watching the Packers as a young, hungry, improving team that was being built up and fighting to become a respected contender and legitimate superbowl contender.

I think there HAD to be a discussion in the organization before the events that took place at the end of the 2018 season. I think they came to the conclusion that they were going to ultimately side with Rodgers and submit to his desire to have Mike McCarthy replaced. I think they also sat Aaron Rodgers down and told him he's not off the hook, his behavior has to change, but we're siding with you here- We're going to let MM go.

....."DO NOT BE THE PROBLEM."

Hired new coach 2019. Front office sees signs that the player they just sat down and told they were throwing their lot in with, the player who they fired a coach over, the player they said don't be the problem to, is still being a problem (Example: running the old playbook. Example: ignoring the new Head Coach in game. Example: Telling young WRs to ignore what their position coaches are teaching them and do things differently.. etc).

The hand is forced. This guy is a problem. As unpalatable as it is, enough is enough, we need to start making the plan for the future now. Start looking for the QB of the future. 2020: Draft Jordan Love.

Scouts, not internet draft guys had him rated in late second round. Good value pick for a need area.

Blind Love! I get it. You want to believe. And your hopes are No body is wrong. You want that shinny new toy. But did you really get what you wanted? I for one am not satisfied with any of these picks. I still think that this draft, like the last one, will be nothing but a revolving door. That the positions drafted will be replaced with Free Agents. And the more coaching and time that goes into this picks, won't produce a winner. With that said, I hope these guys are hungry. And can have a good career in the NFL. I don't know more then the professionals. And if the greenBay packers Brass failed. You don't hide your heads in the sand. And speak up and hold them accountable.

I find it very hard to believe that you hope these guys have a good career.

There are no certainties in any draft. However, 3 players that fill positional needs, seem very much football people and look to be able to contribute from day one is a very good haul evidencing a deliberate attempt to make this team better now. Can’t fault that approach.

I give Gute credit for approaching the different circumstances this year differently. Shows an ability to adapt and change strategy. Pretty much all one could ask for. There are no guarantees in the draft.

I like the picks so far but what's most amazing is the comments about Jordan Love like inserting him in place of Rodgers the Packers won't miss a beat , wow just wow. if Love is the guy I see a winless season .

Winless? Really? 0-17? I think your vision is as skewed in the other direction as those that think the Packers would not miss a beat. In fact, I think your vision is so skewed you are making up that people are saying that. I don't think they are. I think they are simply accepting what may be an uncomfortable reality if the diva's hissy fit is as deep as reports indicate.

I can't speak for others. But I can say that I fully expect a deep hit on QB play if it comes to pass that the diva retires and Jordan Love is elevated to start. But wishing Rodgers was not a diva throwing a hissy fit does not have any power to change that he is a diva throwing a hissy fit.

And thats what bothers me about these picks. You don't replace a Linsley easily. You saw how many CBs have been drafted in the last 10 years. And how many Wrs have the packers drafted and replaced. And we needed Bahk so badly, nobody could replace him. Yet; The problem has been the DL. The problem was ILB. And we saw the results from Gutes patch. Same holes, and live on a prayer, and a whim. So I'm looking at the lions Draft. They killed it and understood it. Gute didn't. Best LT in the draft. And two DTs to replace Suh and Fairly. Then they drafted the rich CB position. Thats wanting to win. Go all in. IF it's all about the Upside. The packers have blown another draft. If it's about the patch. Gute blew it again.

The Lions/Bears have won a lot more drafts (according to draft day pundits) than the Packers over the last 16 years, but the Packers have won a lot more games.

Because of the qb play not hard to figure out but we have been lucky to have such an easy division to make us all think we’re so elite. Just saying no Rodgers means we probably lose to the bears of all things.

Stockholder,

It's almost as though you don't understand the NFL draft is designed to give the worst teams better draft results and the best teams lesser draft results.

That's the entire point of the draft system. Lesser teams get higher picks so they have better odds of improving their team than the already strong teams do.

If you desperately want the "oohhhh! Ahhhhh!" experience on draft day, I suggest you find a really shitty team to root for.

It’s called being spoiled with hall of fame qbs acting like the packers are the best organization to exist. He leaves it will be like what the cowboys endured for 20 years. Sucks we lost the best chance for another super bowl since the organization thinks they’ve been smarter for 30 years. 6 mvps and 2 Super Bowls says enough there.

I'll take less swerving and much more durability. It seems like we have our gadget player , which adds a facet to our offense that is very difficult to defend.
