Packers Select TE Luke Musgrave in 2023 NFL Draft - Round 2

Lule Musgrave, TE, Oregon State.

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

6.6", 253lbs, 4.61 40 yd, 36" vertical, 125" Broad, 4.41 20-yd, 7.09 3-cone, 19 bench reps

CAREER NOTES:

Musgrave is the nephew of former Oregon and NFL quarterback Bill Musgrave, who has been a long-time coach at the college and NFL levels. His father, Doug, also played quarterback for two years at Oregon. Luke's journey took him to Corvallis, where he made his own path after starring at Bend Senior High School. He started once in 12 games played as a true freshman (2-18-9.0) and then three times in seven games in 2020 (12-142-11.8). Musgrave took a step forward in 2021, catching 22 passes for 304 yards (13.8 per) and a score in 13 games (nine starts). He also blocked a punt and returned it 27 yards against Utah. Musgrave started hot in 2022, catching 11 passes for 169 yards (15.4 per) and a score in two games. However, he missed the rest of the season with a knee injury.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

The Packers get an offensive weapon for Jordan Love. It wasn't Darnell Washington, who was available and many assumed would be their "type" of tight end (Marcedes Lewis bias, of course). Musgrave is more versatile - you can line him up anywhere and use him as more of a chess piece. The Packers can utilize Deguara in more of the h-back role while letting Musgrave loose in the secondary.  In all, he could turn out to be a three-down player for the Packers.

COMMENTARY:

Musgrave has impressive size, with long muscular arms on a long frame. He has a quick burst off the line and accelerates past linebackers and safeties - a true vertical threat at tight end. Has plus YAC ability, and leans that long body forward when being tackled to pick up extra yards. He's a reliable catcher and comfortably high-points the ball to win in contested catch situations. As a blocker, he's willing but needs to get stronger in order to better maintain blocks.

EXCERPT FROM THE CHTV DRAFT GUIDE

Musgrave is going to be a true case study of potential versus production this draft season. He has starter potential and is one of the best athletes in the class at the position. The former Oregon State standout has ideal height, long arms, good hands, and elite athletic traits. Yet his tape is limited, and he played more than 350 snaps just once in his career. Still, he stood out at the Senior Bowl and combine and will get some consideration in the late first round, but he is most likely a second-round pick, even with his question marks.

That's like trading down. And letting the lions take Brian branch .hmmm someone we needed.
Gut your fired.
Sorry ,I've seen enough.

Without these guys having played a single down in the NFL you are making wild claims. Read up on Musgrave and you will see his ceiling is extremely high and he is a better receiver than Washington right now.

Skip the reading and watch Musgrave's highlights. Amazingly fluid receiver at 6'6" and 255 lbs. Much better Lazard! Going to be unstoppable! I too like Darnell Washington but he was so over-rated from the Combine. I do hope the Packers are somehow able to snag him in the 3rd round if possible.

Washington is rumored to have a knee injury. Word is that is why he is sliding. Some say he may not be available until 2024.

Geezzzhead. You wouldn't pick a guy with a knee injury................but that's EXACTLY why Washington fell to the later third round.
Given how the board fell, my choices would have been:
Round 1 Edge Myles Murphy (pretty close call between him and Van Ness)
Round 2.1 S Brian Branch (very hard to refuse the top Safety on the board when the Packers need one)
Round 2.2 DT Gervon Dexter. Yes, three defensive players in the first 3 picks. Why ? Value
Round 3 I'm good with TE Tucker Kraft here. I liked TE Washington (so many of us did), but have no idea how bad his knee is (which caused him to drop).

Still need a WR in my version of the draft (I want A.T.Perry in round 4 and would be willing to move up to get him).

That would fill a great many needs.

Apparently there are some injury concerns with Washington. Not certain what for sure, but that's what I'm reading online. I'd rather have a pass catching threat than another Marcedes Lewis but only time will tell. I'm excited about the two TEs we drafted and can't wait to see them paired with Love and our young WR group!

Absolutely love this pick. I had been big on Washington until I started reading more about Musgrave. He can block, not as well as Washington, and is a good receiver. He might have the highest ceiling of all the TEs in the draft.

He was NFL.com's #1 rated TE. Probably Gutey's #1 too. He and Love can learn together, along with all the rest of the youngsters. It may not be pretty at times this year, but sure should be fun to watch the growth.

I don't agree with Musgrave's ceiling being higher at all. Kincaid is an absolute beast. Of course Van Ness is better than any edge taken today, but Kincaid is also better than Musgrave. It's a trade off of value.

And for as much as Gute loves his freak defensive athletes... Maybe one day he'll actually hit on one or two and he won't need to keep drafting them every first round because he'll have guys he can keep for years :P

Well I just don't agree with that. And I also don't think ceiling is necessarily the most meaningful thing to look at either without also evaluating a guy's ability/likelihood of getting to that ceiling.

Anyway, I don't hate it (like I have most of Gute's other drafts). Right idea, I just would have gone in a different priority

How about this. Musgrave is bigger and faster than Kincaid. Right now Musgrave is a better blocker and can be in-line or out wide. Whereas Kincaid is out wide only. The difference between Kincaid and Musgrave is smaller than it is between LVN and McDonald (#15 overall pick).

I agree Musgrave is a more traditional TE and better blocker. Kincaid is a more dynamic receiver that's going to cause the league problems in ways Musgrave won't.

I don't agree at all with your last assessment, but I also wasn't very high on McDonald.

Looking at the draft list: Kincaid and Keion White still would have been preferable. But hopefully you're right. Part of me is sour on constantly drafting defense in the 1st round, particularly highly athletic "projects" that need a couple of years to really develop

The gap between Kincaid and Musgrave is miniscule compared to the gap between Van Ness and any day 2 edge guys. Go look at the sack leaders from last year. Almost all of them are 1st round picks. Now go look at the best tight ends in football. None of them were first round picks. I rest my case. This isnt about whos better. You just didnt get your way and dont know how to cope. FFS why cant you people get excited about our new players? Its nonstop whining every single year.

You would've been disappointed had the Pack done what you suggested. All the 2nd tier edges (McDonald,Murphy, Anudike-Uzomah, Hall, Foskey and Ojulari) went between the Packers 1st pick #13 and their 2nd pick #42. They got much better value with Van Ness and Musgrave.

I loved this pick. I wanted Musgrave and Hyatt. Washington would've also been acceptable but Musgrave is a monster and has the potential to be a monster for GB. The fact that GB drafted Reed over Hyatt though and gaffed with the Branch trade giving him to a rival... Simply inexcusable.

I think if this is really the TE the team wanted, he could have been acquired later. This guy is not a number one tight end, at least for now, so, two rounds in the books and we still dont have a starter in the tight end room sigh.

Unless Gutey drafted Mayer or Tucker who both can play inline & move TE the Packers choose one of the two best move TE's who is going to inject instant offense. Kincaid or Musgrave were the TE's, or should I say the big/power Slot WR's I wanted in the draft.

As I am typing this the Packers just selected Tucker Kraft TE. Love it! They have their in-line TE but one who is also a pretty good receiving TE.

Outside of QB, TE is the hardest position for rookies. You cannot expect a rookie TE to come in and be your TE1. Doesn't matter if he is the #1 pick or the #256 pick.

Gutekunst knows he can’t afford to miss.

Splitpea1, I think Washington not passing physical points to both Musgrave & Reed having been readily cleared. That gives me some consolation.

I felt exactly the same - but after years decades-style doing this, there’s usually good reasoning. Not like when Ted was throwing Major League (the movie) backstop killers.

If the Packers medical staff passed a player I trust the injury is OK. It is widely reported that the Packers have one of the most conservative medical staffs in the NFL. They will not just allow a guy to play because coaches want to have him out there.

Whoever said Gute even liked Washington? These narratives take off and people just run with them. Its a known fact teams use some top 30 visits on guys they arent interested in drafting just to throw other teams off. Gamesmanship. I like that he's more of a receiving TE, compared to Washington who's more of a blocking TE. They need more of a big play guy at that position. It was a bad sign that Mercedes Lewis got so much playing time in the past couple years.

Also, HUGE.

Heres the thing. in the wide zone offense, tight ends dont have to be devastating drive blockers. They just have to have the agility to get outside the edge defender and get themselves between the defender and running back. The wide zone is a 2 read play so even if the tight end gets beat, the running back has 2 options. Shannon Sharpe was 228 pounds and a piss poor run blocker and yet Terrell Davis ran for 2000 yards. Its always athleticism over power for tight ends in an offense like this.

I'm going to say Musgrave if he remains healthy should be nicknamed 'Microwave' as he is going to be unstoppable. Injecting immediate offensive power. The question I have is how do they plan on using him? As I have said repeatedly he would seem to me to be that big/power Slot WR. Not a good blocker, gets injured often, but can run & explosive. Remove him from continuous injuries & the fact he isn't a good blocker and just let him do what he is good at.....running down the seam & high pointing passes being 6'6".

For all you doubters & haters regarding the Musgrave pick!

Per Packers Wire....."One of the most athletic tight ends ever (98th percentile). Compares favorably in terms of size and athleticism to Travis Kelce."

Absolutely love this selection! Instant offense! Tell me how a defense is likely to stop him with Watson, Doubs, and maybe Reed on the field along with AJ & Dillon.

Per Packers Wire....."One of the most athletic tight ends ever (98th percentile). Compares favorably in terms of size and athleticism to Travis Kelce."

Well, if Packer Wire says so.....
Travis Kelce?...lol..WOW 😮

I remember a writer comparing Jeff Janis's combine numbers to Julio Jones obsessively.
I also remember no teams in the league wanting Janis and he now changes oil and sells tires.
You have Kevin King who now sits on his couch watching NFL games at 27 years old.
********************
Listen to me and take notes if you'd like.....

What you did in college effects 2 things, it gets you slotted in the draft, and it gets you paid, based on your slot.
After that, you are just unproven potential.

The NFL is a different animal than college ball, it's a business and if you can't perform, the league sends you home sooner or later.

After you sign your contract in the NFL, what you did in college doesn't mean s*** anymore. You have a clean slate...either to sink or swim.

See J'Marcus Russell, Johnny Manziel, Tony Mandarich, RG3, Ryan Leaf, David Carr, Christian Ponder, Tim Tebow, Baker Mayfield, and the list goes on and on and on.

You are nothing, until you prove yourself in the NFL, and that can only be done, on the field.
************
Have fun, playing the game of...this guy will do this, this guy will do that, that guy will do this. This guy will be a matchup nightmare, that guy will dominate the game, this guy will be a HOF'er.
They will be nothing....until they get on the field and earn it.

If your a Packer fan, the best you can hope for with Gute...

He gets 2 solid starters from the draft, that seems to be his ceiling.
He can finally get some pass catching talent since we've been waiting since 2018.
He can find a player from rounds 3-7 in his career.
He might someday draft an offensive skill player in the first round besides someone who sits on the bench for years.
We hope in 5 years we have more than 1 player on the roster from a draft. See 2018
