Packers Select OT Kyle Murphy in 2016 NFL Draft, Round 6
By Cole Finup
With thier 6th round draft pick (200th overall), in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select Kyle Murphy, OT, Stanford
Measurables/Combine:
6'6'', 305 lbs, 33 1/2 in arms, 5.19s 40-yard dash, 23 reps at 225 lbs
Career Notes:
In Murphy's first full year as a starter in his junior season, he finished 2nd-Team All-Pac-12 at right tackle. Murphy switched to the left side in 2015 to protect new Kansas City quarterback Kevin Hogan who in turn enjoyed a great senior season at Stanford. Murphy's smash mouth ground game also paved the way for running back Christian McCaffrey, and he took home more honors, this time making 1st-Team All-Conference. Murphy was able to refine his skills as a pass blocker while playing left tackle, but he struggles with quick edge rushers. He provides solid technique with a toughness in the ground game and the versatility to play guard or tackle in the NFL.
Scouting Report:
Positives:
- CBS Sports: Murphy's quick start and length make him a formidable opponent in pass protection. He slides well laterally and is alert to stunts and blitzes, getting a strong shove on one defender before switching off to another. While quick enough to get to the second level as a run blocker, Murphy can get off-balance when attempting to change direction.
Negatives:
- NFL.com: Will get stiff legged at impact in protection, raising pad level and losing anchor leverage. Needs to play more flat-footed when shooting his punch. Speed to power rushers give him problems so may need to make inside hand placement a greater priority.
Commentary:
Kyle Murphy adds versatility to the Green Bay line, and Ted Thompson seems to only draft linemen that played left tackle in college. He could be used at a variety of spots along the line, but his slow feet might keep him to right tackle or guard. He engages well and walls off defenders but doesn't churn his feet or keep moving. In your face as a run blocker which the Packers should love. He will have to compete with Don Barclay, JC Tretter, Lane Taylor, and practice squad holdovers Garth Gerhart, Kyle Vucjnovich, and Josh Walker for a spot on the final 53-man roster. Not to mention 2nd round draft choice Jason Spriggs.
Thompson wraps up his draft with another offensive lineman which is a move towards 2017 as Bakhtiari, Lang, and Sitton are all due for new contracts. Although Thompson targeted multiple linebackers in the middle rounds, a chance on Arizona's Scooby Wright III or another position of need would have been a welcoming sight. Murphy provides versaitility and toughness to the Packers, but he will need to get stronger and better his footwork in order to hold up against outside rushers in today's NFL.

IMO, getting Kyle Murphy at pick #200 was a steal. Adding Spriggs and Murphy to the OL has given the Packers depth at that position they haven't had.
In fact, I believe it could be argued that the OL is the only position that has actually been strengthened by this draft. All the other draft picks can at best be described as replacements for talent that has left like Raji or will be leaving like Neal.

Murphy was my sleeper pick at OT in the CheeseheadTV draft guide. However, I wouldn't be shocked if the Packers plan to look at him inside at guard, too,

Similar to Lang/Sitton. Could be one of their replacements next year.

I'll never disapprove picking an OL while #12 is the starting QB.

I have a question. How does our backup quarterback Hundley compare to the QBs who were picked in this year's draft?

Hundley is vastly superior to all of them in every way.

This draft for the Packers was a draft of bulking up in the trenches. Drafting 4 of 7 players on the OL and DL. Also adding an OLB and ILB really showed that they wanted to improve from the inside out of the team.
Adding speed at WR can really help also.
Hopefully Packers work some magic and get some good UDFAs.

Seems like a nice player, but I really don't see where all these OL are gonna fit on the 53. These things tend to work themselves out, but still...

And that is exactly what my problem was with it.
Right now I would say Bakhtiari, Sitton, Linsley, Lang, Bulaga, Spriggs and Tretter are all locks. Murphy's virtually a lock as is Taylor with his contract.
That's 9 OL right now virtually locked into the 53.

Why do they all need to fit? Cut the ones at the bottom and maybe try and stash them on the PS if they are good enough. That's football.

We saw what happened last year when injuries decimated the offensive line late in the season. It wasn't pretty. That won't happen next year.
Is it safe to say that the Packers have done enough to get back to the BIG DANCE? They have an easy schedule (on paper, at least). They've plugged some holes. The receivers are healthy. Lacy's in shape. What else?

better position coaches and in one instance the addition of a position coach will help. I doubt they're going to tailor only to the vets and let the newbies play catch up this year. We may be teaching NFL fundamentals to the youngins and developing them.

This seems more like a wake-up call to the O-line back ups, than a depth strategy. "You played terrible and are replaceable." Seems to be the subtext.

Mike McCarthy said before the draft that the Packers "need to get bigger." It's clear that thinking came through with picking the two big tackles, Kyler Fackrell is 6'5" and Dean Lowery is 6'6".
Although Barclay was re-signed, he may not make the roster. Matt Rotherham will also be fighting for a roster spot.
It's interesting that they did not select a RB. They must be happy with Lacy's progress and aren't concerned about Starks' age or injury history.

The glut at OL and WR probably will work out, but...it is unusual to put a 5th rounder on the PS (Abby comes to mind, but he had injury concerns). There was a thread on this issue a while back, somewhere, about how it did not make sense to draft a mediocre rated WR. Consensus was that it only made sense to take a WR in rounds 1, 2, 3 or 7. Having speed does not make you a gunner. Janis has value on STs. Maybe GB already knows what it is going to do with 7 WRs, but I do not.
I suppose Murphy is a PS candidate. It is uncommon for 6th rounders not to make the team, but it happens. I like Murphy, but cannot help but note that we already have 6 OL locked in. Spriggs is a lock, so 7. Taylor is a good bet due to the $600K guaranteed and his decent play, so 8. They paid Rotherham while on the PS, and Walker made the 53. Roster management will certainly be interesting.
