Packers Select Kingsley Keke Edge in 2019 NFL Draft Round 5, Pick 150

With the 150th selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, Brian Gutekunst selected Kingsley Keke to help add depth to the Packers already talented front seven.  Here is a look at Kingsley Keke's measurables.

Measurables/Combine: Height 6'3, Weight 288 lbs., 40 yard dash time 4.95, bench press DNP, vertical 31.5, broad jump 111, cone drill 7.55, shuttle 4.46

Career Notes: Player Comp: Mario Edwards.  Kingsley Keke became a contributor in his freshman season for the Aggies as he saw action in 13 games.  The four-star recruit finally captured a starting role in 2016 during Texas A&M's final 9 games where he had 37 tackles, 4 sacks, 4 TFL, and 4 Passes Defensed.  In 2017, Keke became a full-time starter and had 54 tackles, 1 sack, and 2.5 TFL.  Keke put himself on the radar of NFL scouts during his senior season as he had a career year accumulating 51 tackles, a team-high 7 sacks, and 11 Tackles for Loss

Scouting Report: NFL.com: "Potentially polarizing prospect as some teams could struggle with his best fit in the league.  With his athletic ability and functional strength, a role base in a 4-3 scheme with the ability to reduce inside is most likely.  One gapping 3-4 defenses could target him as well, but he'll need to add aggressiveness at the point of attack for that role.  Keke could step into an early backup spot, but he possesses enough natural ability to aim for an eventual starter or designated rusher role."-Lance Zierlein

The Draft Network: "Kingsley Keke is one of the oddest players I've ever scouted.  One one hand, he has wild flexibility and bend for an interior defensive lineman, capable of contorting his body to reduce his surface area while cornering some tough angles to the pocket.  On the other hand, he's not explosive at all and takes several steps to get to top speed. He has some terrific rush moves, but he's slow to deploy them at times and doesn't finish as often as you'd like to see."-The Draft Network

Commentary: Brian Gutekunst has had a pretty balanced draft, as he has added two selections to both sides of the ball.  The selection of Kingsley Keke adds another versatile member to the Packers front seven who can play with a hand in the ground up front and can also stand up and rush the passer.

I look for Keke to immediately assume a rotational role and potentially replace Mike Daniels in the near future if he shows enough promise early on in his career.

I think the selection of Keke should signal the Packers could look to move on from Montravius Adams in the near future if significant progress is not made during this offseason.  Keke could definitely be a diamond in the rough, as he has had proven success in arguably the best conference in college football.

Brian Gutekunst has certainly upgraded his front seven by adding talented and athletic players to the fold who will be able to maximize and assume their full potential under the tutelage of Mike Pettine, Mike Smith, and the rest of the Packers positional coaches on defense.

Actually really like this pick. Could use a year to gain some lower body size. Good value pick and with Mike Daniels potentially leaving its a good signing. Led the Aggies in sacks this year

With Ryan and Morrison gone, and Burks not being very physical, Mack Wilson was sitting there for us to pick to solidify our last opening on D, a run stuffing, quality inside LB that was the number 3 ranked ILB by cheesehead Tv draft guide (after White and Bush). Would have been great quality in the 5th rd.

Hope KeKe is the real deal

Doug

It is becoming clear that Gute is in over his head. General Managers need to consider the entire team when making decisions.

We have overpaid in money or draft capital in well over half of our acquisitions. Our new HC will need to be a magician to make up for Gute’s multiple errors in judgement.

Savage may be an excellent safety, but is he two 4th round picks better than the multitude of other safeties or other players available at 30 in the first round?

Gute reminds me of enthusiastic junior achievement high school students.
You gotta love them but you don’t put them in charge of over $100,000,000.

Yeah I can't lie I was really hoping they would draft Mack Wilson. Seemed like a plug and play starter alongside Blake Martinez. But they know more than we do about Oren Burks, they must feel confident he did what he needed to improve into a starter.

The average NFL career is a scant three years.

That means the majority of players are what most would call "busts".

Great majority of Players in the NFL were acquired via the draft. Still, most do not get a second contract. It's an ultra-competitive league and a very tough business.

Every year, there will be a good number of previously 3rd round draftees who wash out of the pro game.. and 7th rounders, and 5th rounders, and even 2nd and 1st rounders.

Welcome to football. Evaluating talent and projecting development is largely a crap shoot.

Talk to Ted about that. In two drafts under Gutekunst this roster has gotten considerably more athletic, faster, and IMO a hell of a lot better.

Gutekunst clearly values athleticism and versatility. Just look at the D-Line / OLB position for example Doug. That IS an exciting group of players he's put together which should and IMO will put this defense over the top.

Clark
Daniels
Z. Smith
P. Smith
Gary
Lowry
Keke
Frackrell

Plus guys like Lancaster & Brown who played really well at the end of the year last season. That's a hell of a lot of depth and 7 of those 10 players I just mentioned can get after the QB. If Kevin King can just STAY HEATHY this will be a Top 5 defense...

Maybe Adams is a wasted pick but it sure as hell looks like Gute has covered his ass for Adams and then some.

It's still a little early for Mack Wilson for my tastes. As long as they're calling out picks it's too early. I'd be ok with him as a UDFA signing but even that wouldn't excite me.

No thanks to a LB that can't run. That's just not how today's NFL defenses play well.

From SI.com '' 'What had come out of our session in 1989 was my April 24 cover story for Sports Illustrated entitled The Incredible Bulk, with SI's editors declaring Mandarich the Best Offensive Line Prospect EVER. ''

Get over it kids. There were busts in the past, there will be busts today and there will be busts in the future.

Even the "Best Prospects" of all time.

Surely all of us average joes (using the term loosely in a few cases) don't know who will be a bust or all pro. We are not privy to all the interviews, medical exams, family history , hobbies, likes or dislikes, etc any of these rookies has.

The people that do know are our (other teams also) scouting department and GM. They spend the whole year digging for ALL the info on players. How can you claim to compare?

Remember reading somewhere that Wilson is not very fast which I think is why he has dropped this far. Given the choice of Darnell Savage, I also think Josh Jones' days as a safety are numbered and he may be our next project at ILB. Certainly has the speed they like and if he adds 10 lbs he will be the same weight as Burks.

I like it..... This is what the CHTV draft guide had to say about him...

IN A NUTSHELL: Keke is an incredibly strong interior defender, and he knows how to use that strength. He anchors down incredibly well in the run game and bull rushes offensive linemen into the laps of quarterbacks consistently. He has the build of a modern NFL defensive lineman and the athleticism to boot. However, Keke is still rather raw. He will need to develop better technique at the point of attack to consistently win against offensive linemen; namely better leverage and hand placement. Keke is too often stymied if he is unable to land his hump move and will need to develop a set of counters to become successful at the NFL level.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS: Keke may be the best value and fit, when talking about defensive linemen, in this entire class for the Packers. Green Bay doesn’t have a need for premium talent at the position at this moment but will in the near future. Keke has legitimate upside but needs some time to develop. Initially, he would provide some depth to the Packers’ defensive line group and would be able to be groomed to take over in a year or two if the Packers decided to move on from Mike Daniels.

Personally I'm glad Gute is drafting from the SEC instead of the Pac12 or Mac12

I think Savage can be special. I don't see that in any of the others, even through there are some good players. 1 special player is better than 3 solid ones.

I think Jones, Burkes, Martinez will be our ILB corps. They do seem high on Burkes and I’ve been pushing to give Jones one role and that role not include deep coverage, so this makes sense to me.

PS. particularly so after last pick, sort of mid way between Burkes and Jones.

I think we are seeing Gute give Pettine the player types he desires. It will be fun to see what the D looks like with them in place. Like the CB pick a lot too.

The trenches on both sides of the ball have definitely been upgraded thru free agency and the draft. Now add some running backs and ILBs in the 6th, 7th, and UDFA and our team should be able to compete with anyone. I am curious as to how UDFA make their decisions on which teams to sign with. Certainly our lack of depth at RB and ILB must be a factor.

Has anyone been able to predict who the pack was going to draft in any of the 7 rounds?

All I know is I'm feeling a hell of a lot better about our team than I did at this time last year

I couldn't agree more. The holes last year were many and obvious. Other than counting on Savage (always a risk with a rookie) and MVS/EQ (a projection, but a reasonable one), this team seems to have credible answers at all positions now. I'm not buying my Super Bowl tickets or anything, but if they can jell on both sides of the ball then I don't see why they wouldn't be contenders for the North again.

I admit I was a part of the Freakout Parade when Rashan Gary was chosen. Now that the smoke has had some time to clear the parade room I have taken a step back from the ledge. His film does show an incrediblly powerful and fast young man. He was disruptive and allowed other players like Bush and Winovich to garner more tackles. If he stays healthy he can be part of a rotation of generating some great pressure. He won't be on the field all three downs. The big guys always need more breathers. Rotationally he may be a havoc creator. I like the way the draft focused on the defense . Even the CB in the 6th round looks like a keeper. I apologize for my earlier "jumping to a conclusion without having all the necessary information". I also really like the Notre Dame RB who could add some juice to the offense. The TE Jace Sternberger also will be a difference maker. All in all it appears to be the MAKINGS of a wonderful draft.

SpurgeonsCigar,

No apologies necessary. That was the majority opinion around here.

As I am no draftnick, I have to trust our experts to make the player evals.

I, like you, are extremely hopeful and excited for this new direction.

Did anyone take Alex Barnes? I thought for sure he would get drafted by somebody.

I think Keke represents exceptional value at pick 150.

If anyone has taken the time to compare Gary and Keke you find some interesting contrast. Size wise they both are very similar in height and weight. Then take their Combine stats and compare. Obviously Gary's stats are significantly better than Keke's overall.

However, when you compare stats for production last year Keke doubled the # of sacks Gary had. Did not get into tackes behind the line of scrimmage or overall tackles. Just focusing on the # of sacks.

I suppose one could spin all the above several different ways but for me I interpret it that Gary really was not used in the most effective way. Should be very interesting to see how the Pack uses him and his production as a result.
