Packers select Kamal Martin, ILB in 2020 NFL Draft - Round 5

With the 175th pick in the 2020 NFL draft the Green Bay Packers select ILB Kamal Martin, Minnesota.

MEASURABLES

6'3',  240LBS.

CAREER NOTES:

Martin earned first-team all-state and Minnesota Mr. Football finalist honors as a senior quarterback (877 passing yards) and defensive back (13 pass breakups) at Burnsville High School. He settled in at linebacker pretty quickly for the Gophers, however, starting once in 13 appearances as a true freshman (10 tackles, 0.5 sack, one interception). Martin started nine of 12 games played in both his sophomore (42 tackles, 6.5 for loss, two sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles) and junior (59 tackles, 3.5 for loss, two pass breakups) campaigns. He was suspended for the team's 2018 bowl game, though, as well as the 2019 season opener for violating team rules. Martin had a knee injury his senior year which limited him to eight games (seven starts), but he still managed to earn honorable mention All-Big Ten honors with 66 tackles, 2.5 for loss, one sack, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

SCOUTING REPORTS:

COMMENTARY:

Finally the inside linebacker position gets a little love.  Better late than never?  66 tackles his senior year but only 2.5 behind the line of scrimmage.  Packers are hoping he has the speed to drop back and cover as well as help against the run but senior stats show just two passes defensed.  Still, Martin has a chance to play this year as the ILB spot next to Kirksey appears to be wide open.

He was banged up quite bit, I remember him being a good teams player. Long arms but he was drafted to be a downhill tackler, nothing athletically intriguing really. JT juked him a few times but he did that to a lot of players......

Held him up. He can run. He's not bad. Just not what I'd be looking for at this point in the draft.

Martin is a better zone defender than Martinez. He can move faster to the TEs. Can he attack the middle? Yes, he had good games against Badger etc. Everyone acts as if the Three ILBs taken in round one were omnipresent in the rest of the draft. College ball is run and chase. Joe Baiche was worth a pick. See who they bring in as UDFAs or veteran pick ups.

Gutey must believe the future is so bright, we don't need any draft help. So he made sure he didn't draft any.

Looks like a thumper able to shed blocks and has a strong internal clock. If we miss this season of football. So we head to free agency again, then another draft. And then carry two years of rookie classes in to the following season? Which also has the potential to have more games? And extended playoffs? If and when, how big will rosters become? Lol This shit is fascinating. And to all of those who think they know who would bring the trophy home? Sure. Yeah. I believe you. Uh huh. Let the Gutekunst, and new regime have some breathing room. The adults are going to work. Here is to the future being bright! Drafting for now is total bullshit. It really is. If you think you are one piece away? You are an idiot. You forget about injuries. You forget about real games that haven’t been played. Real development and regression of rosters around the league. You forget a lot. Just relax and enjoy the ride.

The message of this this draft is , we are not good the 13 and 3 was an abberation , don’t expect us to come close , we will just draft role players for depth. We all should be angry about this draft , Gute stuck it to us good.

He's not competitive at LT. He's a T --> G conversion. MIght back up RT.

If he's good enough to replace Bakhtiari, Gute's a genius. I ain't goin' there.

Definitely a wide range of opinions on this guys strengths. Per espn:

Martin has good height, a thick build and long arms. He does a good job of keeping blockers off his pads, and he excels at locating the ball while engaged with blockers. He's a solid wrap-up tackler. He's instinctive and shows a good feel for crossers in zone coverage. Martin will have some man-to-man limitations in the NFL

Once again Packers need a tackle so of course it's another guard...yea I know you need road plow guards to make the running game go...but that play action pass doesn't happen if you can't hold up the outside pass rush. Let's see what's left in the bargain basement.

What difference does it make who you draft or
line up at LB long as Lowry and Lancaster are
are on the D-Line being abused and shoved into
the ground like the 49'ers and other teams did last
year this team will not go anywhere next season.

Totally agree. One more super-duper WR is not going to beat the Niners who at last meeting fielded 7 (seven) First Round Picks on their offensive and defensive lines. Now, how many years of losses went into gathering that many 1st picks or shrewdness by the Gen'l Mgr., or combination thereof , I don't know. Lynch has not been there that long.

So, I think MLF wants to change the scheme on offense to more his style. More TE's and Jones as a receiver.

Trade Adams , your best receiver for picks, like Spielman did with Diggs and then get another load of picks from Lynch, who then jumped the Pack for Aiyuk, desperately trying to get back to the big Game. . We will see in four years where Jimmy G is in his career as Love starts his mojo.

I came into this draft believing the Packers needed help at a few starting positions to be a Super Bowl contender. I now believe their biggest need is at GM.

Having been a Packer's fan since the 1950's, I've seen this shitshow before.
