Career Notes:

The big defensive lineman initially started his career with Wake Forest, then transferred to Cal following his freshman season. He redshirted in 2014 due to NCAA transfer rules. Once he got on the field at Cal in 2015, he never came off. He started for Cal from 2015 through 2017, missing only one game. He brought down many running backs and a few quarterbacks from the interior of the line at Cal, finishing his career with 130 tackles and 8.5 sacks.

Commentary:

In the seventh round, with action winding down, Gutenkunst grabbed an athlete who fell in the Packers’ lap at a position that does not have immediate need. While Kenny Clark and Mike Daniels have the interior of the line handled, it could help to have a guy like Looney grow into a rotational pass rusher from the inside to give them a breather. Looney compares to Datone Jones who was a productive backup in his rookie contract with the Packers a few years ago.
