Packers Rookie RB Johnathan Franklin Placed on Injured Reserve

Packers Rookie RB Johnathan Franklin Placed on Injured Reserve

After suffering an injury in Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings, Franklin's season has come to a close, placed on season-ending injured reserve.

The highlight of Franklin's season was his 103-yard game in Week 3 at Cincinnati, but after fumbling two times in the Packers' first four games of the season, he rarely saw the field after that point.

To fill Franklin's spot on the roster, the Packers signed practice squad player Victor Aiyewa, who will fill the void at backup inside linebacker seeing as Jamari Lattimore has been ruled out of Thursday's Thanksgiving Day game against Detroit with a quadriceps injury.

It is par for the course, nothing like catching a break here.

Let's hope Franklin is not another J Finley. That was an hellacious hit.

That is my fear at this point. First it started as a concussion, but then I saw reports that it was concussion/neck.

All the neck injuries are scary now, because not many players come back from neck injuries it seems.

This could be a sign that the Packers plan on carrying their three pro bowl level qb's on the roster. This is very very interesting to say the least.

And the hits just keep on coming. Mighty thin at RB now.

No big deal w/ Franklin. He wasn't going to play on offense the rest of the season anyway and his KR were HORRID. Bring him back next year and see if he can hold onto the ball. If he can, I like him as a backup change of pace to Lacy and Starks.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Don't forget next year we will have Harris back as well.. We could potentially have the best backfield in the league.

Lacy, Harris, Starks, Franklin.

Steven's picture

Agreed. I just hope next year we still let lacy be the workhorse.

RC, a year ago today if anyone suggested what you just did they would call you crazy. You are absolutely 100% right on that. The Packers without question WILL have the best group of running backs in the league. Who honestly would have thought that. That is a credit to the legend Ted Thompson. The guy had a need and filled it in one draft. He filled it so much it's overflowing.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Yeah, I agree... Hell if anyone said that 2 months ago they would be called crazy.
The only disappointing thing is that we won't have that this year.

But we still do have Lacy who is a beast. And Starks who has been explosive when given the opportunity.

redlights's picture

Starks is RFA after this year, but I don't see TT paying for a 2nd round tender, so he'll be picked up by someone else and TT gets a possible comp pick.

This move does surprise me.
I just wish we could have seen what he could have done on a swing pass or screen pass. I would have loved to have seen his speed in the open field.

I don't know if this is more to do with Franklin or more to do with the Packers need at LB right now.

But RB is thin right now. Can't trust Starks to stay healthy. Hopefully Lacy does.

Anyone know where I can see a replay of the hit? I missed it.

Watchout for Victor Aiyewa! He has some of the best special team blocks ever put on tape. Dude hits people so hard they run the other way on a kickoff! WTF! Hopefully we can mold that to an effective pass rush. Raw, but definately an athlete. Reminds me of Alec Ogletree a little. Happy Thanksgiving. Late.

Are you talking about him in college?

Al Katraz's picture

Here's where I'm lost with the Packers org. Frankin came in at 5'9 185 pounds ringing wet, he obviuosly can't play in the NFL so we IR the guy rather then just cut our loses with him. Is there a rule that you can't cut a guy who is injured? IR guarantee's the guy is on the pay role through the rest of the season versus he is healed in two weeks and cut.
Why would they keep him?

Idiot Fan's picture

Darren Sproles is 5' 6" and 190 pounds.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Franklin weighed in at the combine at 5'10, 205lbs.

Sproles weighed in at the combine at 5'6, 187 lbs.

Reggie Bush's combine he weighed in at 5'10, 201lbs.

So how is Franklin that much smaller then these guys? I don't get your point.

Ohh and Tavon Austin who was the 8th overall pick in this years draft weighed in at the combine at 5'8, 174 lbs...

The league is full of guys the same size as Franklin or smaller.

Franklin can't play in the NFL because he got injured? I guess if thats the rule of not being able to play in the NFL, half the league wouldn't be allowed to play.

Before you go spouting a bunch of crap, go get some facts and backup what you say.

Cow42's picture

All those guys listed are MUCH more elusive than Franklin.

They don't get hit.

Franklin does.

Stroh's picture

I guess you didn't see the Cincy game did you?! He looked pretty elusive in that game. Too bad it ended w/ his fumble, but he definitely ran w/ good vision and was elusive against what is a very good Cincy D.

madmanJack's picture

if you don't remember, Franklin got hit returning a kick.....i know, nobody ever gets hurt doing that.....WAI!!
