Packers Retention Of Tom Clements Is Big News For Jordan Love
Clements goes to his second season under head coach Matt LaFleur
When the Green Bay Packers hired quarterbacks coach Tom Clements back a year ago, Aaron Rodgers hadn't decided yet if he was going to keep playing or not. The move to rehire the coach was the first strong indication that Rodgers would be back, and head coach Matt LaFleur admitted the veteran quarterback's praise was a big part of the selection process to replace Luke Getsy, who left to Green Bay to be the Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator.
One year later, even with a similar situation — not knowing if Rodgers would be back —, Clements was retained by LaFleur. And that's a big step for Jordan Love's development.
"I would say that, just in terms of our conversations over the last couple of years, and how much he credits Tom for his development, it was very intriguing when we had an opportunity," LaFleur said right after hiring the position coach. "I got an opportunity to go out and meet with him prior to the Super Bowl, really sit down and had lunch with him. I think we interviewed each other, to some level, but just the conversations we had, it's pretty easy for me to see why he is such a great quarterback coach and developer, he's such a great communicator, he's got such a great even-keeled demeanor."
A former CFL quarterback and with a brief playing experience in the NFL for the Kansas City Chiefs, Clements consolidated himself with a strong track record developing young quarterbacks. He was a position coach for the New Orleans Saints (1997-1999), Kansas City Chiefs (2000), and Pittsburgh Steelers (2001-2003) before receiving his first opportunity as an offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills (2004-2005).
After being fired in Buffalo, Clements joined the initial Mike McCarthy staff in Green Bay in 2006 as quarterbacks coach. That was Aaron Rodgers second season in the NFL, and he spent two more seasons behind Brett Favre before taking over as the starter. The last season of Clements as QB coach was 2011, and Rodgers was the MVP for the first time.
Clements spent three years as offensive coordinator and two more as assistant head coach before his first retirement. The coach spent two years with the Arizona Cardinals helping develop Kyler Murray as QBs coach and passing game coordinator. Then, after one season away from football, he got the call from LaFleur.
"Just his ability to develop quarterbacks, no matter who is in the room, is going to be very beneficial to the Green Bay Packers organization," added LaFleur.
In 2022, besides his relationship with Rodgers, Clements was an integral part of Jordan Love's development — and the improvement on the field was clear, including footwork and release.
"It's the things we've worked on the most, which is footwork, the proper drop, going through your progression, not getting stuck on a receiver, not being late with the ball," Clements said of Love after his appearance against the Philadelphia Eagles. "We work on different route concepts each week, we did a lot in the spring, but then you have to see it play out when you have a defense out there. You have to be able to go from 1-2-3 to your outlet quickly, and you can't lock on a guy. You have to process information quickly, figure out where to go, and your footwork plays into that as well. If your feet are right, and you're seeing things right, you're able to decide where to go with the ball. His footwork, rhythm and getting the ball off on time is where he's gotten a lot better.”
Throughout his NFL coaching career, Clements worked with players like Kerry Collins, Jake Delhomme, Elvis Grbac, Tommy Maddox, Drew Bledsoe, J. P. Losman, Kelly Holcomb, Kyler Murray. In Green Bay, he coached Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Brian Brohm, Matt Flynn, Brett Hundley, among others. Even with quarterbacks from different characteristics and levels, Clements was competent to extract what he could from those players.
Now, it's Jordan Love's turn to learn and improve his game. The Green Bay Packers are counting on it.

Clements has decades of experience and it can only help a young developing QB like Jordan Love. Think it was only a few years ago AR was struggling and all of a sudden his game improved and he said he went back and watched his film and footwork. Glad the Packers have Clements! I think he would be a savior for a young Zach Wilson should he be part of the AR trade.

I said when MLF hired Clements that Jordan Love will blossom. I thank God he accepted the call and take over QB coach job.
After all, he and Mike McCarthy made ACR HOFer.
I'm not fan of taking Zach Wilson from Jets. Packers need QB with experience to be back up to Jordan Love. I was hoping for Taylor Heinecke, but he signed with Falcons for 10 mill $/year, 2 years deal. Any suggestions for back up?

Croat,
With White yesterday signing (Dolphins?) elsewhere Zach probably isn't going anywhere. However, I am simply saying after the Packers hopefully negotiate some key draft picks in 2023 (#13), and conditional pick(s) in 2024/2025 should Zach somehow be included I think it would be a win for the Packers with Zach still on a rookie contract eliminating the need to shell out millions for a back-up veteran QB. The Packers are heavily re-tooling (Jannes) and in cap hell for the next couple of years....if possible get Zach as a throw in, and put remaining cap dollars for FA's that are actually starting and playing vs paying big dollars for a back-up QB sitting on the bench. Just my opinion!

Packers have Etling on roster. Why should they need Zach Wilson, #1 pick who is much more expensive. That does not have sense...

By your take, if the Packers have Etling, why should they need Heinicke? Etling and Wilson aren't 1:1 comparable. Etling is barely more than a camp body/last man standing. He enjoys, like so many third-string/practice squad QBs on Packer rosters of the last decade or so, an exaggerated value from some fans. Wilson has experience, sure mostly bad, but any experience beyond practices and preseason games is a plus. I'm not advocating for Wilson, he seems like a bust on and off the field, and as you say he costs too much. A backup with experience, and a low cap hit won't be easy to find. The Packers need that limited cap space for bigger holes on the roster. Maybe the draft? The first year Rodgers started, they drafted Brian Brohm in the second round, and Matt Flynn in the seventh.

I do not agree. Etling and Wilson at this moment are very comparable. And Wilson is #1 pick so what is his cost per year? And what is Etling's?

You don't think Wilson doesn't have more upside, plus experience than Etling????????

Does that matter? Unless Wilson is a true redemption candidate in your view?

With his high ceiling and being thrown into the New York frying pan and having to start right away I'd think he could CW. He is HATED in NY and anyone with any common sense with the NY front office should reasonably see it is going to be very tough for Wilson to ever play for them again. Likely never happen but if Gutey made Wilson a requirement I could see Clements and the Green Bay area being good therapy for Zach. Worth the try as the 2nd overall draft pick!

I don’t much care about our back up this year, unless he’s got a very high ceiling. If Love gets hurt, so be it. We are in a healing year cap wise and we are not likely to be contending seriously. Etling will be fine holding a clip board. If Love goes down, then we will get better picks. The exception would be if we draft a guy to challenge Love next year (or trade the following) . He’d be on a rookie contract, so cheap. It would be nice to get back to the Wolf era of QBs we could get trade value from every few years.

You cannot project whether Jordan Love will be a good QB, but you can project the Packers will be at the bottom of the division. Hmmm!
With the above aside....there is no doubt the Lions and the Bears are improving & will continue to improve with draft capital & FA. Detroit has been on the upswing for several years now. Just one more reason that hopefully the Packers can get sufficient draft capital and players in return for Rodgers. I am seeing in the news that AR is requiring the Jets signing of Odell Beckham making me wonder if either Elijah Moore, or Corey Davis is being included in the trade?

The Bears have no where to go but up. They were the worst team in the league last year so they cannot get worse, except by their wins and losses. Fields has a long ways to go before he looks like a viable NFL QB. His play worked in college because he was more athletic than most people. In the NFL everyone is as athletic as he is so that play doesn't work anymore. Not to mention he is opening himself up to a lot of injuries.
For the Lions we have seen them time and again flash for a year, maybe two, and then fall back to 3rd or 4th in the division. I don't put any stock in their 2nd play divisional finish due to their history.

Haha, what a card...""On Monday night, Rodgers — knowing that everyone around the NFL is hanging on his every word — gave them half a word (well, half a name) and a pair of smiley emojis.
“SULLLLLL,” he tweeted, in reference to Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas.
On Sunday, Douglas, a former Eagles star, had taken a swipe at a sportscaster who questioned whether Rodgers’ soon-to-be-ex-teammates cared that he likely was leaving Green Bay.
“Just thinking bout all these Jets players asking 12 to come join them in New York on social media,” Spectrum News 1 broadcaster Gary Ellerson wrote Saturday on Twitter. “Why aren’t 12 teammates asking him to stay here?”
Douglas — who’s played two seasons with the Packers and Rodgers — pointed out that teammates can contact Rodgers directly instead of posting on social media: “Because we have his number. We can actually text him instead of writing it on social media,” Douglas wrote. “As our leader he knows how each person on the roster feels about him.”

The new NFL league year begins Wednesday at 4 pm ET. That means the negotiating period doesn't apply to players who were tendered for the 2023 league year, which includes exclusive rights players, and restricted free agents. To me, this means with no news of the trade being consummated yet it would appear there is a big chance it is because part of the trade package includes players currently under contract for the 2023 season (can we say possibly players like a Bachtiari, or maybe an Elijah Moore, Corey Davis, or a Zach Wilson)? I believe tomorrow afternoon we all will learn about the trade, but not before!

Good point Knock. I could see Denzel Mims as a player being talked about as well. Corey Davis is pricey at 10.5M. I think the Jets release will him with only a 378K dead cap hit. No need to trade for him.

Pleased Tom is back and I believe Love will continue to be coached up by him...probably even more so than by Stenovich or MLF.
It was interesting to see Rich Bisaccia get promoted to Assist HC...did MLF lobby for this promotion or did Murphy make the call? Is it possible MLF is on thin ice? Packers obviously want Rich to stay around.
dobber
March 14, 2023 at 02:46 pm
It makes it harder for other teams to try to poach him for a lateral move. Basically the Packers can block an interview for just about anything but a HC job.
...not gonna deny your point, though, that it keeps someone around who could step in on an interim basis if necessary, too.

I thought that Bisaccia was the only coach who earned his salary last season. Promoting him to Assistant HC is plan B should MLF falter during the regular season - which I put at 50-50 (with a higher probability for failure should Rodgers return). Meanwhile Clements is a comfortable and safe re-hire - who will be more important to Love than Rodgers. I view these as Gutekunst decisions - in preparation of life without Rodgers.

Watson was the second pick in the second round (34th) last draft, and the Packers tried initially to trade for Minnesota's last pick in the first (32nd) to get him. How much earlier of a pick do you want? Would your position of, "Guter doesn't draft WRs early," be different if the first attempt at the deal gone through, and Watson was drafted two picks earlier?
Due to the success the franchise has had for a while, with a few exceptions, they generally pick later in the rounds. Would you rather their draft position was earlier over the last few years? Highly-rated receivers are generally gone very early. Last year's draft had an incredibly good WR class. That's not always the case. I'm happy they haven't reached too often for WRs early (they've done that enough with CBs over the years). There's no guarantee a first rounder will turn out. Lazard went undrafted, and look at that contract he's getting!
