Packers Reportedly Re-Sign Hawk

According to WTMJ's Lance Allan, the Packers are set to re-sign A.J. Hawk today.

From WTMJ's Lance Allan:

Just as quick as he was cut, A.J. Hawk is back, with the Pack. Two sources tell me that the linebacker is scheduled to fly back to Green Bay on Thursday, and sign a new 5-year deal. Terms not disclosed. The Packers didn't have deal fully completed before they had to release Hawk. But Hawk will come to Lambeau Field to sign the new contract before the collective bargaining agreement is set to expire on Thursday at midnight.

A five year deal would mirror the length of Desmond Bishop's deal, keeping both linebackers in Green Bay through 2014. Bishop was given $7.45 million in bonus money and is set to make $1.188 million in salary in 2011. No word yet what the numbers are on Hawk's contract, but look for something similar.

I don't think so. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Barnett and Hawk back next year. Barnett's cap # isn't prohibitive.

Maybe. Maybe if they get someone they like through the draft he doesn't survive August. It might be more fair to Barnett to let him walk now if that's the direction they are going to go.

Considering Mike McCarthy made it a point to say Bishop had the inside line as a starter for ILB, this new deal pretty much leans heavily towards one outcome in the Hawk vs. Barnett battle for the second ILB position.

But anything can still happen. There's a lot of time left between now and next season.

Nick Beats may have been annoying at the end of the year...but he was every fans favorite PACKER at least once the last five years.

i remember hearing that Barnett wouldn't switch to OLB. I think if he stays healthy he'd be perfect to start opposite matthews, he's got the speed and tackling ability. maybe he'd be willing to switch if thats the only way he could stay a packer.

He's way, way too small to play outside. Teams would run all day on him. Not going to happen.

Getting Hawk under contract is huge, HUge, HUGE!!! Although I don't think Barnett is going anywhere, he had two season-ending injuries in the past three years. His contract is nothing like Hawk's was, so releasing him wouldn't make too much sense.

If you remember, Hawk didn't even see the field in week 1 against the Eagles. Didn't play ONE single snap -- making his agent attempt to demand a trade. After the game his agent said:

“A.J. is a pro’s pro and wants to do his part to help the team win, and his first priority is to be the best Packer he can,” McCartney said. “But if some team called and wanted him to play on all three downs, I think he’d be excited about that.”

To be honest -- I don't really think the Packers knew what to do with Hawk. He isn't the best cover LB, and they believe Barnett and Bishop are better athletes. With Barnett and Chillar going down, Hawk kind of won the starting position to default.

He had a solid year, waas the defensive signal caller and the team captain for the playoffs. So it will be verrrrry interesting to see what happens during the summer. Does Hawk keep the job? Or will it look similar to the beginning of this season where Capers won't know how to get him on the field?

Regardless, resigning him and keeping the GREAT depth we have at linebacker intact is HUGE.

Seacrest out!!!

No way we get Asamugha...I don't even think its legal to have a defense that nasty!

The only way the Pack get him is if he takes a WAY below-market value deal just to play on a winner with Woodson.

I give that a less-than 1% chance of happening.

Never rule it out. What were the odds that Reggie White was going to sign with the Packers?

Keep the faith baby.

If they sign Asamugha how will they have the money to lock down Finley?

GREAT point but by then a lot could happen. Driver could retire and make room for some cap space.

I don't think a Asamugha signing would affect Finley because they're never going to pay top dollar for him - it would put way too large a percentage of their cap space into the secondary.

I am surprised. It will be interesting to see what happens with Chillar. I really thought Hawk wanted to be an every down guy, with Chillar on the team he is going to split reps, even to the point as in past years not even getting onto the field.

This is a big surprise. I thought Hawk would have at least kicked the tires with other clubs.

Maybe the ability to defend the title and to play for the Packer organization was too great.

I am pretty sure that Chillar is viewed as a backup at this point. His effectiveness as a "cover LB" has been quite over-hyped in the past.

They didnt give Hawk this deal to sit him. Look for him to play in the base and most nickel packages.

Seriously. What an ass.

Maybe he should worry a little more about getting his completion percentage above 50% and less about what the Packers are doing.

He jumped the gun. Don't know if it was prompted by what he heard from Hawk himself, I hope not.

But it shows loyalty to his brother-in-law, in the same time that it shows he's become bitter with everything that has happened to him.

I fed him a little pre-emptive crow right after he tweeted.

To be honest, if it weren't for the insanely brief length of tweets, I would have given him quite a lashing.

Sounds like AJ is looking at $6-7 mil average with $10 mil guaranteed ......

I sure hope he has "life-time" health insurance written into his new contract ..... If not ...... It would certainly be a "travesty" ..... LOL.

Good to see A.J. back in the Green and Gold.. He is a good old school smash mouth football player in the tradition of the Packer players of the past... he is worth the money in Jersey sales alone

When I found out he was released, I went out and got an AJ Hawk jersey, in hopes that it was good karma of him coming back. I'm not crazy, so I don't think my trick worked... however, I am glad to see him back with the Packers! He plays a big part in our stellar defense, and when you have a well oiled machine.. You don't want to mess with the parts! whooohooo for AJ and our Green Bay Packers!! Excellent choice!!
