Packers reportedly cutting WR Darrius Shepherd

The North Dakota State product could not overcome some glaring mistakes.

The Athletic reports that the Packers are releasing wide receiver Darrius Shepherd.

The news comes on the heels of reports that the Packers are signing veteran wide receiver Tavon Austin.

Shepherd undoubtedly fell out of favor after his fumble on a kickoff return against the Colts two weeks ago.

A 5-foot-11, 186-pound rookie out of North Dakota State, Shepherd was originally signed by Green Bay as an undrafted free agent in 2019, after participating in the team's rookie orientation on a tryout basis.

He had two strong training camps but could never put it together in the regular season, with two glaring miscues - the ball that bounced off his facemask turning into an interception against the Lions and the fumble against the Colts - being the things he'll unfortunately be most be remembered for.

Let's hope not.
He has no talent.
Everyone on this site is always crying to cut guys like MVS and ESB for little mistakes or not producing, and now they are both doing great (development takes time).

DS has had plenty of time and never even made a single tantalizing play of the sort that would make you think he had the potential to grow (as MVS and ESB BOTH did often, which was why we all got upset at their lack of consistency).

DS was consistent. Consistently awful.

Please do not lump everyone in with your opinions. Speak for yourself.

Darius has enough talent to make a NFL roster and play in NFL games. That is way more talent than you ever thought about having.

Fair. But Shepherd does not have an outstanding physical trait. He isn't big, or particularly fast, or even quick. I don't think he made strides in two years with his route running.

I thought he had some elusiveness and decent hands, despite the fumble and the INT last year. Somewhat intriguing and enough to give him a shot. Unfortunately, he failed to capitalize on his opportunity.

He looks like a bottom of the roster or PS guy to me.

Appreciate the reply Tgr. I would never question your assessment of a player, as I know that you put in necessary effort to produce an informed analysis.

Someone like Spike, however, is a totally different matter. I do not appreciate Spike's constant attacks on CHTV writers, especially when he engages in fakery by claiming to be a published author and college professor.

Based on your logic you should never post again because John Steinbeck had more writing talent than you.

But not enough to be claimed off waivers....He seems like a very nice kid, I just never believed Sheperd had NFL talent......Most remember I threw a hissy fit when Gute cut Lazard and kept Sheperd on the 53........

Shephard is the classic small school underdog that everyone, including myself, loves to root for. Unfortunately he made big mistakes at crucial times and the NFL is a performance league. I hope Shephard catches on to a practice squad somewhere else where he can learn and grow enough to make it at some point.

Gonna be tough Guam - Who wants a return guy with the yips?

He has a lot of challenges to overcome

One year too late. I believe that most fans could see from last season that D.S. was inadequate. So rather than cut their losses and seek a better player, management decided to re-cycle mediocrity. I don't know what it is about the management - their aversion to dynamic and fast players. They started to 'get it' with Tyler Ervin but a team needs more than one player of that ilk because of the high injury rates. Otherwise you'll have CBs (Jackson) and WRs (Taylor) as your return options - with predictable non results (in terms of yardage). The coaches also tried Shepherd as a slot receiver but having pedestrian speed, with no wiggle and the the occasional crucial drop is the antithesis of what a slot receiver should be. In my opinion the packers offense is just one good slot receiver away from being able to level-up even further. I'm remembering what a young Randall Cobb contributed to the team .

Who knows how hard management is trying? Looks like Austin is in and looks to be an upgrade over Sheppard, so they are getting there. Just because you WANT to do something doesn’t always mean you CAN. The cap is real and so is the business of the NFL. I personally would prefer an ILB who can tackle and not suck...... but this is asking too much. So we get Austin and improve our special teams with a guy with some experience. A great move.

Always sad to see some one get cut, but he had a fair chance over two expanded chances! maybe back to PS but in his case I doubt that is in his future!

Yes, Shepherd failed as a returner. But it might have made a difference if he had better special teams coaching, scheme & talent around him.

Remember that the Packs had negative yardage on special teams last season until they brought Ervin in.

How would any of that helped him to hold onto the rock?

That’s not talent, scheme or coaching. That’s on the player.

Shephard had no speed or juice to make plays even if he had good blocking. Always looked a few steps slow.

Wonder if the Bears will pick him up? Maybe try and pick his brain about the Packer play pad. Wish him well where ever he ends up or ends up doing.

After cutting Stills and now losing Fuller, it would be ironic if the Texans signed Shepherd.

Story should be , Packers release yet another un drafted free agent who never should have been in the NFL , not the first and won't be the last , Packers just love bargains.

He's a good kid and had an outstanding career at North Dakota State, just not built for nascar on grass. See how he responds.
