Packers Reportedly Agree To Deal With Letroy Guion, Make Offer To Raji

ESPN reports on the Packers' latest moves, which could help start to solidify the defensive interior.

From Demovsky:

Demovsky is the one that reported that the Packers and Guion were working on a long term deal during the season. You have to think Guion's legal troubles this offseason probably cost him a bit of money.

This move makes perfect sense for the Packers in that they bring back a player who, once he rounded into playing shape after missing all of training camp, gave them more quality snaps than anyone expected heading into 2014. And now they get him back on another one-year, prove-it deal.

Demovsky also has the Packers offering B.J. Raji a one year deal for "less than $2 million." I wouldn't be surprised to see Raji wait things out a bit, but you have to think he ends up back in Green Bay one way or another.

At this point, I think Raji's lucky to see anything over $1 million for one year.

I suspect you are right, but I also think that low number might cause another smart team to make a run at him. He reportedly looked great in camp last year before the injury and his rehab is rumored to have gone very well. Raji is from NJ I believe. I know the Giants value big bodies. I've had this nervous hunch all along they might swoop in. But I really hope he stays in GB.

$1 million or less for Raji seems harsh! I had him pegged at $1.5 to $2.0, and only would have grumbled a bit at even $2.5 million. More important to me is the guaranteed money for Raji and Guion.

GB has quantity on the d-line especially if Raji and Guion both re-sign. If TT takes a defensive lineman high in the draft, we might be looking to PUP or cut a guy. Pennel, Boyd, Guion, Raji, Datone, Thornton, Daniels plus a draft pick/UDFA is a lot of bodies.

Welcome back letroy. In my opinion punishing people for weed is bullshit but he should be punished for pulling the do you know who i am card. We all make mistakes so lets move on and not keep making the same mistakes. Next up raji and kuhn, draft and develope. Maybe we can extend some contracts too.

I'm glad Guion is re-signed now that his legal status has been resolved. He's a nice rotation player to have up front. He's not going to dominate while chewing up 70% of the snaps but he can chip in effectively.

As to Raji, he hasn't had so much as a half sack since 2011. I think the statute of limitations has run out on when he was an effective player. I hope he finds more money elsewhere. I'm tired of waiting for the guy we saw in 2010/2011 to re-appear.

You've been making excuses for Raji now going on 4 years. This isn't about his career. It's about can he provide the DL presence that GB needs to advance to the SB before AR finds another team to play out his final years.

Stroh --- get real. Raji's days in GB should be over.

Actually Samson several people feel the same way as he does. Raji is a much better NT, it was the position he was drafted for. In 2009 and 2010 he rewarded the Packers with exceptional play. Granted he was BAD in 2012 and 13 but with the contract the Packers gave him it's ALL up to him. I think we see a version of Raji much closer to 2010 playing "NT".

Re-signing Guion is good news. It may take a little more negotiating, but I think TT will re-sign Raji too. Then, it's on to the draft!

"Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
#Packers are expected to bring back free agent DT BJ Raji on a one-year deal, source said. He missed last year after surgery on his bicep"

Looks like they are finishing up their unfinished business in FA.

I like the idea of having Raji back at NT especially on run downs and having Guion at NT on passing downs.

I agree. I'm totally down with this. It seems very low-risk with at least some potential for high reward if a motivated and healthy Raji at NT can recapture some old form.

If Rajii signs at the estimated salary having 2 players who have performed well in the past at low cost and only 1 year contracts has to give the team a level of confidence that they can concentrate on LB and CB in the draft. However, they will need to groom a young player based on either leaving in 2016, too bad Thornton didn't show more in camp last year. Boyd has over achieved but seems to be cast as a DE rather than a DT but he could be used there short term.

It seems there is significant uncertainty whether BJ can bounce back from the biceps injury enough to contribute. I'm sure other teams feel the same way. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Yeah, the injury concern may be there but I am guessing the God awful play he put on tape in 2013 has more to do with it. He was really bad in 2013. Hurt all 2014. Not a recipe for a payday in 2015.

2012 wasn't much, if any, better for Raji than 2013. His last sack came in 2011. It's 2015 now. He's not known as a block of granite vs the run, either.

It's been a good long while since he's done much of anything.

It is obvious some new blood is necessary for the DL and i think these signings are necessary stepping stones for now.

Raji had been league-worst-DE kind of bad the last three years. I'm very skeptical that a position change will make enough of a difference to matter.

I'd rather he not even sign with us for fear we might waste snaps on a black hole of negative play.

Big guys dont grow on trees and most of the time you wont hear their name called when they are taking on multiple blockers. Only the packers know if he is doing his job. He was asked to play out of position with pickett at the nose. Lets give him a chance back where he belongs.

Both Raji and Pickett are 6'2" and 330+. Pickett played DE in the base and played well. The Packer 3-4 during that time is different than the Phillips 3-4 Watt operated in and what Rac runs now. You're comparing apples to oranges. Compare Pickett to Raji. Why was Pickett able to perform at DE in the base and not Raji? It can't be body type and skill set. They're both interior linemen by trade. Others look at sacks. I don't because Capers asks his DEs to be run stuffers first and press the pocket second. Fact is Raji played the run poorly when compared to Pickett. I agree he's better playing over the center but he should be expected to play at the 2i and 3 on the Guards and be productive. When given the chance in Nickel he hasn't produced.

Raji is not a DE.....BUT.....the Packers play a ton of Nickel and he hasn't produced over the Guards either. Cullen Jenkins was 6' 2" and just over 300 and played the 5 tech just fine. It isn't so much about height (although it helps) as it is about being a bender in the hips. Raji is valuable as a NT which means he's not very valuable on the open market. He has displayed no ability to play as a 4-3 DT and with defenses becoming more hybrid Raji will always come cheap and get little guaranteed money. Sad indictment for a top draft pick in his prime.
