DEFENSIVE LINE help in Rd 1?
Monster jump for Jerry Tillery who rocked his combine workout. I questioned his athleticism on film, but the Notre Dame star proved to be in the upper echelon of athletes for the defensive tackle position. At nearly 6-foot-7 and just under 300 pounds, he's a uniquely sized interior defensive lineman but has heavy, active hands, is strong against the run, and will consistently push the pocket.

Regarding Jeffery Simmons at No. 5 overall while he's nursing a torn ACL, I realized it was basically pointless to really ding him for an injury unlikely to impact him that far into his NFL career. He's just about as well-rounded as Quinnen Williams and has multiple dominant years on his resume in the SEC.

So far it sounds like the Smith brothers are getting about 30% of the total value of their contracts as signing bonuses. Sigh.

Well, they almost have to if GB is signing Smith, Smith, Amos, Turner, and probably Breeland with a tender for Allision still.

Well, even be fore free agency started officially, Gute has signed major free agents to fill the holes. Letting Perry go is the right thing. His contract is even worse next year. Here was my original wish list. I think Gute read my list:
1. Dump Cobb and Perry to free cap space. Especially Perry as his cap hit is bad and gets worse each year. Done -- check
2. Sign good FA OLB – Houston ($15 mil), Then a FA OLB vet for depth ($5 mil) (could be Matthews) and draft Edge -Burns. Done -- check. BG signed two top level FA's.
3. TE: Keep Graham for one more year, draft Hockenson or Fant. Keep Tonyan. Done -- check. Let's see who BG drafts.
4. OL: Sign FA guard. Guy from Oakland if he gets cut. Then one more OL for depth. Draft OL in round two. Madison will never play. Done -- check. Starters are set. Let's see how the draft goes.
5. Safety: Sign a mid FA vet ($6 - $8 mil). Then draft a safety in rounds 4. Keep Williams as second safety. He will play better his second year playing that position. Consider moving Jackson. Done --check.
6. WR: Sign Humphries ($6 mil). Cobb is too old and expensive. Then draft Andy Isabella Rd 3. Brown and Scantling have enough potential and one should make a good jump in second year. Not done -- ran out of money. Draft Isabella.
7. Other FA signings: Keep Breeland ($6 - $8 mil) and Wilkerson. Wilkerson will be cheap ($3 mil). For DL a mid to late round draft pick. Not done -- Release Williams, sign Breeland and draft safety -- possible still.
8. Draft: Consider trading pick 30 for more 2nd and 3rd round picks. The signings allow for taking best player rather than need. Now that we don't have to draft an edge at pick 12, then we perhaps can trade down, get another 2nd or 3rd round pick, pick Hockenson first, the OL at 30, safety at 44, Isabella at extra pick with trading down and another edge at 75. Not sure on order, but what a haul!!

That tweet you posted should have said, "...healthy *for now*" He's been healthy before; he just never stays that way for long.

Aaron, I was expecting solid play from Perry when he was drafted. I didn't expect him to be a super star, but he failed miserably. While he was often injured, his play in the last couple of years was disappointing and it felt as if he was simply taking plays off. I am really pleased that Gute decided to move on and not pay the multi-million dollar bonus due this month.

Some really interesting points from other sites that I'd like to share here for comment:

1) While the terms of each contract are still speculation, it's safe to say that there's more cuts and restructuring to happen at the Packers in order to consume these contracts AND the Draft class........ watch this space!

2) A number of the teams above the Packers in the draft order that are noted as being "in need" of Pass Rushers haven't made many FA Edge splashes - Yet. Leading to the hypothesis that they see their solution in the draft, and thereby meaning that there may be a run on Edge defenders early in the draft........

........ which means that the Packers #12 pick may see the edge guys available there as too risky for that number - and that either a trade or BPA is the more likely scenario for that pick.

Free agents usually don't get signed unless there was some downside on their first teams. While these are ne signings to plug obvious holes, lets not get to high until we see what Gute goes in the draft. For all this talk, this still is a draft and develop league.

I hope Za'Darius Smith is worth the money, $16.5M/year is a lot. I Also think Billy Turner price was a bit too high. I am good with Preston Smith and Adrian Amos. Go Pack Go

Packer fans seem happy today to be rid of TT and many of the guys he signed, especially on defense.

OTOH, I have to think of Russ Ball as well. He signed these guys to these incredible 2nd contracts. Too bad Murph loves the guy so much, I think he is more part of of the problem than the solution.

And John Dorsey, is he a helluva GM or what - GB, KC and now CLE. What do they all have in common? Just win baby! Did he het that from Wolfie? Me thinks so.

Not to say Gutey is chopped liver. I'm still liking him as he had a big day yesterday. Maybe he and Pettine can finally get this defense back to respectability. I've never felt a weak defense and GB goes together. Think back to yesteryear and 66 manning the middle, surrounded by HOF guys on all three levels. Maybe that is the new direction for this team. LaFleur wants to bring back the run and Gutey/Pettine wants to bring back the defense. If we can keep the one thing we have been doing right, the pass, we could be in synch again. I like a balanced team that is very good on all fronts. That is the goal. How the Pats achieve it year and year out is quite remarkable.

I hope Matthews is not out on moving inside with Martinez. That pass rush and run support with the defensive line would be formidable.
