Packers Release Mark Tauscher
The veteran offensive tackle apparently will not retire.
By PackerAaron
In a move that was expected, the Packers have released veteran right tackle Mark Tauscher.
Tom Silverstein makes a good point:
Cap savings for #Packers with Mark Tauscher release is $4.58 million. Five vet cuts = $17.26 million in cap savings for #Packers.
This cap saving will most likely used to sign rookies and extend guys like Josh Sitton and Jermichael Finely later in the year.

Copeland says Matt Wilhelm will not be back. Packers have only 3 ILBs on roster. Wonder if they'll shop, or shift an OLB inside.
July 29, 2011 at 03:46 pm
I wouldn't be surprised if Brad Jones got some looks on the inside.
July 29, 2011 at 04:57 pm
On a post yesterday when asked if Brad Jones would move inside Nagler said:
"No. One of the coaches was asked about this and they said Jones is strictly an OLB."
And we all know, if Aaron says it, book it!

I didn't say it - a coach said it! Lord.
July 29, 2011 at 05:37 pm
Wow, take a pill
"So maybe I should have said Nagler reported what a coach said"..."and if Aaron reports it, you can book it.

Seems MM doesn't agree with whichever coach said that.
Moving OLBs inside: "Absolutely. You're looking at Brad Jones and Robert Francois. Those are the types of things you can do."

No offense to Tausch, or others that the Packers let walk/cut...but I'd rather have money for Sitton, Nelson, Finley, Raji and Matthews than any of those that we have lost. This is the way TT does business, he just builds from within and doesn't overpay for guys.
July 29, 2011 at 05:39 pm
...Money for Finley if he proves he can produce and not have a knee implode. Until then, I hate to say it, there is promise but not solid proof in a long term spendy resign.

This is a sad day. A great Packer is released. I know it's the business, and I didn't envision him back, but I hoped Tausch would retire a Packer.
July 29, 2011 at 03:54 pm
Agreed. Honestly, I thought that he might be one guy who'd rather retire. We'll see if it impacts his other prospects once he does retire. Probably not. He's not likely to burn bridges as he moves on (assuming he moves on).

I really like Tauscher. Great character guy and one of my all time favorite Packers.
Thanks Mark for everything you have done and best of luck in whatever lies in front of you.

Wiscokid said it the best...fact is, if Tauscher wasnt from UW you guys would have wanted him out of town a long time ago...FACT!

The Packers have Hawk, Bishop, D.J. Smith, Eli "Peanut" Joseph, Cardia Jackson and Robert Francois at ILB. 6 players not 3. Francois plays all 4 spots.
Also the Packers have not lost any of extreme importance.....
July 29, 2011 at 04:46 pm
Eli and Peanut Joseph are two different people. Peanut is the LB, his twin brother Eli plays DL.
July 29, 2011 at 05:26 pm
correct, but if you're not aware, they both for short are called eli.... one elijah other elisah or something like that---peanut is the nickname....
July 29, 2011 at 03:36 pm
And the Minnesota Vikings' new right tackle is....
July 29, 2011 at 03:50 pm
Seriously...if you watched Phil Loadholtz at all laast year, you see it doesn't really matter who they bring in at qb...he will be on his back a lot. The whole OL in MN is so overrated...tausch would be a big uptick, but it'd be even worse to see him in purple, than JJ.

Dude(s), you all are on top of it. I can't find current, fresh news anywhere. I'm glad I found your site last year. Sad to see Taush go, but we now have a lot of youth and players to replace him, freeing up that money is smart because, as other readers mentioned, it frees up room to sign key cogs such as Sitton and (if he can prove to stay healthy) Finley! Good stuff here! Keep up the good work!

I think what will be very interesting will be how the Packers play with their money not only this year but more importantly next offseason..
Sure they freed up all this $$ now -- it comes off the books, but it applies to next years Cap! Hhmm, gonna be interesting.....

Tauscher is the ultimate Wisconsin Man. End of story. Godspeed big guy!
July 29, 2011 at 05:41 pm
How many players can say their whole football career--Junior high all the way through the Pros-- was in Wisconsin.
Great guy and I hope there is some sort of mentoring role for him. I think he has a lot to offer the developing linemen.
July 29, 2011 at 04:54 pm
Sad day. Tauchser was a cool guy, I hope he comes back to the pack some day in some sort of coaching role?

FAVORITE TAUSCHER MOMENT:
He was introducing the Packers starting offense on Monday Night Football...and when it came for Number 4 he proceeds "and at quarterback...Vinny Testaverde's Dad....Brett Favre...."
Great dude....great sense of humor...great player...loved having him on the team.
July 29, 2011 at 09:35 pm
My favorite Tauscher moment is when he lined up as the 6th OL and caught a TD pass. He did a Lambeau Leap, only for the pass to be called back for holding by Grey Ruegamer. He may have been the biggest leaper, lol.
July 29, 2011 at 04:59 pm
I forget how all these rules work. Can TT resign Tauscher for less?
July 29, 2011 at 07:47 pm
Yes. And Barnett.
July 29, 2011 at 05:14 pm
Thanks for all the great years Mark!!! A true wisconsin man. Badger then Packer. U will be missed... GO PACK GO
July 29, 2011 at 08:44 pm
It's sad to see Mark go. Maybe Ted will change his method for a moment and get Wisconsin native and stud Rich Seubert. I went to the same tiny high school as this guy. He'd be a great replacement for Daryn Colledge.
July 29, 2011 at 09:14 pm
Not sure why Ted Thompson would go get an OLDER and more injury-prone player like Seubert even if he went to the same tiny high school as you??
The goal is to Improve at the position..
July 29, 2011 at 10:51 pm
Yes, thanks for that Chris. I realize it wouldn't make sense, that's why I threw the line of "change his method." I know it'll never happen. Thanks for letting one shoot over your head.

Type slower next time. He'll catch up.
