Packers reconvene with WR DeAngelo Yancey, release LB Greer Martini

-- On a relatively quiet Thursday, the Green Bay Packers added a wide receiver to their practice squad in the wake of their injuries at the position.

The team announced the signing of DeAngelo Yancey to their practice squad, releasing linebacker Greer Martini as the corresponding move.

The Packers drafted Yancey in the fifth round (No. 175) of the 2017 draft as a result of a trade with the Denver Broncos. After playing sporadically throughout the preseason, the Packers stashed him on their practice squad for the entire duration of his rookie season.

It was the same old song and dance in 2018, except when the Packers waived him during final roster cut-downs, they didn't choose to retain him.

The Packers needed Yancey in a sense that the team simply didn't have enough bodies to practice with. He arrived in Green Bay just in time for Thursday's practice.

Davante Adams (calf), Randall Cobb (hamstring) and Geronimo Allison (concussion) all didn't practice on Thursday, leaving the Packers significantly thin in the passing game.

Yancey recently had a tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday, however, the Packers acquired him less than a day later.

Depending on how the three top receivers' respective injuries respond on Saturday, Yancey could be activated to the Packers' active roster in time for their game against the Detroit Lions this Sunday.

Even on short notice, Yancey has somewhat of a competent understanding of the team's offense despite spending such little time with offensive coordinator Joe Philbin.

Martini was a special teams standout who had a high chance of making the team's roster in early September but was one of the difficult cuts the team needed to make in order to trim their roster down to 53 players.

Martini was quite "shakened" by the news. But his agent was quoted as asking the team if he had stirred the locker room. Additionally, the agent said he would be Bonding with Martini tonight.

Apparently he was "shaken not stirred" by his release. Thanks, Since '61

Why wouldn't Yancey have a complete understanding of the offense? Has it changed?

Just like anything, people retain information at different levels. Maybe he's a slow learner and needs to take a few weeks to "remember" old information again. Who knows. I got A's in algebra as a freshmen in high school but 35 years later, if I had to take the same tests today I'd fail miserably as I lost all that I learned. I do remember having 2 beers at a party in 1983 though. The mind is weird what it remembers.

So a cut WR that no other NFL team wanted (DeAngelo Yancey) could play ahead of the rookie WRs? Doesn't say much for their abilities.

Yancey is signed to PS, not to the active roster! He will not play in any game for Packers while he is on the PS...

Croat, I am interested in your thoughts on Sha'Mon Moore? Can he be a legit NFL receiver? He seems to lack one trait so far that the great ones have and that's the ability to catch the football in live play. Do you think he has a chance?

Heya Dash, it's J'Mon Moore btw. I think you're confusing him with Shemar Moore the star of CBS television series S.W.A.T.

lol... Rak, no, no confusion at all. It's my name I gave him after making Tim Boyle look average when he dropped 3 to 4 perfectly thrown passes that should or could have been long td passes this preseason. It's supposed to be pronounced or mean "Shame On Moore" for dropping those passes. It's similar to Dropvante Adams or Misin Crosby during his slump a few years ago. It's a mock nickname and I'll give him his real name back when he proves he can actually catch a pass in live play. Hopefully I'll call him J'Mon instead of Shame On after this week. We'll see.

Why on earth would you want HIS opinion? Easily the least knowledgeable person on CHTV.
I lose interest in anything that clown has to say even before trying to decipher his broken english. His thoughts are better suited for Packers.com where the Packers have all the best players, coaches and admin people in the NFL.

Having a little fun with Croat because I read his meltdown about how he hates people that give out nicknames which I am guilty of for one player. He mentioned Mash Potato Mike and Dropvante so I asked him about Sha'Mon Moore which again is a nickname that was meant to be pronounced Shame On Moore but apparently some didn't catch it. I asked Croat just to razz him a little nothing more.

I don’t like this. It looks like our rookies just might become starters soon? Well, at least they are getting some practice time. Rodgers might have to get his trust factor up to speed with some of his formally “piss poor” at practice, players. I would not have much concern except that Rodgers has been playing injured and not as razor sharp as he usually is.

The worry for me is that Rodgers holds the ball as the three rooks run helter-skelter around the field. End result could be more sacks.

Vs. the Bills they ran the ball 27 times (not including Rodgers' 5 runs) out of 67 total offensive snaps, that's almost exactly 60/40 Pass-Run ratio.

Hopefully they will do the same or better vs. the Lions.. I guess we just have to hope the balance they showed last week wasn't only because the opponent laid an egg.

This may end up helping Green Bay long term. Letting the rookies get a chance to stand out without the best receivers in could help. I am surprised that MVS hasn't had more snaps so far especially with his speed and how well he did in pre season.

Familiar with the system? So far anyone could be familiar with this vanilla offense. Almost any other game I watch, the offenses look complex compared to the Packers. Are they saving something in the playbook?

“Yancey has somewhat of a competent understanding of the teams offense”. High praise indeed. :-(
