Packers Question of the day - Time to hit the Market?

The trade deadline ends on November first, and it's unlikely that'll impact the Packers' front office in any way, shape or form.

However, the free agent market still has some top-shelf cornerback names that may or may not be a shell of their former, younger selves. With Sam Shields on IR, Damarious Randall recently undergoing surgery for his groin injury that has kept him sidelined and will continue to do so for four-to-six weeks, Quinten Rollins still unlikely to play against the Falcons and nothing but young talent steering Joe Whitt Jr.'s ship, is it time the Packers look into the market?

Absolutely!

Chances that TT hits the market in search of a veteran CB? Zero!

Who? Just Curious...

Nobody. Dee Milliner? Antonio Cromartie? Brandon Browner? That constitutes nobody. THey are FAs for a reason. I say ride the young kids and coaching them up during the rough times and praising them during the successes. There is talent there, just needs to combine with experience and confidence.

I'd rather have young, fresh, hungry legs out there with little experience than an old, slow, beat up veteran. Ride the young guys... Atlanta will tell us what we do or do not have

Zach:
Who are these CB's? Hard to answer this question without that information! On a side note: I had about figured Da Bears would have gone after Callahan when the Saints released him. Wonder if they tried but the Browns got the waiver claim? Anyone know? just curious. Anyone know the status of Ryan after he appeared to get injured during the game; the Packer's injuries are looking worse than 2010 (although sure wouldn't mind the same result!). After Barclay's debacle on Thursday I wonder how soon Linsley will be activated (guessing would have already happened without all the other injuries).

They NEED help at CB. Joe Haden for a 2 and a 3 would be great if the Browns would take it. But the chances of TT doing that are about 0.

If there was any chance of TT going paler, suggesting giving up a 2 and 3 would do it.

At this point an experienced corner could not hurt but the question is who is available and what is the cost? There may be some corners out there but what would it cost the Packers to get one? And is it worth it? My guess would be that whoever is available is not very good or they would have been grabbed up already since good CBs are at a premium around the league. I think we're stuck with what we have until Rollins returns and then Randall later in the season. We need our offense to stay on the field as long as possible and our pass rush to harass Ryan or Julio Jones could have a record setting day on Sunday. Thanks, Since '61

They can look at bringing in a veteran, but at this point who is available that will actually help the team?

As usual, we can sum this idea up w/the usual MM/TT mantra: "We feel pretty good about our guys." AKA we don't go outside for help unless all our guys are on IR & we have to start a WR there (see RB).

I think that the odds that Sam Shields will return this year are about 50/50. But I don't think he should return to football at all. We've seen that Packers let All-Pro caliber talent go when continuing to play the game was not in their best interests. I think that Shields is approaching this point. If not on this concussion, then on the next. With this in mind, if there is a trade opportunity for a quality veteran cornerback I think you take it, not as a stop-gap measure, but as part of a long-term plan. But I don't know how anyone could make a list of who is available for a trade.

This type of situation where the packers need a proactive GM is where TT falls so short. Maybe he will make a move and prove me wrong but to me he's a one trick pony with draft and develop.

If TT was going to make a move he wouldn't have made the Geronimo/Whitehead move. No way he brings in a vet FA and tries to slip one of these guys through waivers. Barclay should be odd man out when they activate Linsley, so short of another CB going to IR, don't see it.

I'd offer the Browns our whole 17 draft for Joe Haden, Joe Thomas, and Isiah Crowell.

I'd rather have OK CB play with Good Safety play than Good CB play with OK Safety play. This is when we need our Safeties the most.

I think the Secondary will step up to the plate until the other CB(s) get back. Dom will just have to adjust his play-calling a bit, which he has been. The pass rush has been good and the ILB coverage has been good. We'll be fine.

I was wondering instead of acquiring people maybe Ted the genius could shed some people to get picks for next year. Perry is lighting it up in his contract year, they all do, so he would be a good bait to hang out there.
I don't think anyone would be interested though, he is not that good and was oft injured in his previous 4 years.
They have no needs. No one is giving up a top pass defender so that is out.

Why would we trade away the MVP of our defense this year? I would like to think they may be able to sign Perry because of the injuries... remember Peppers money will be freed next year for Perry

No doubt about D MVP thus far.Peppers is still on the team? Oh yeah, he helped break an arm last week.

It's possible that they might get a comp pick in the spring that's at about the same level of what they'd get if they dealt Perry outright at this point. So keep him, and if someone signs him you get the pick, too.

At this point the key is our pass rush to relieve pressure off the secondary. We saw that with Carolina last year. No way is Ted gonna trade for a CB. There's nobody out there worth signing anyway. I fear that Shields is unfortunately done. That makes me believe we will draft the best available CB in the 2017 draft.

TT won't make a trade. Goes against everything he has done through the years. He values draft picks to much.

Real good CB's aren't that easy to come by, so who would give one up?

I think they could have traded Callahan for a developmental-type corner.

I think it's much more likely that TT grabs a corner from someone else's practice squad. He's not going to surrender a pick. He's not going to sign one of these grizzled vets, either.

If a spot opens up, why not bring Herb Waters up. He doesn't know a damn thing about playing corner, but might as well start learning now.

If we can have HHCD Burnett Brice Gunter aND Hyde on the field at the same time I think that sounds pretty decent. Not extremely worried yet. Now with ATL we could bring in any free agent you want and Julio is still gonna go off..

Why even speculate? No CB will be signed, Capers will play zone and double JJ.

Not saying I am a fan of the idea, just pointing out also that Micah Hyde can play corner as well if he had to. We are not signing a corner.

How about drafting Jeff Janis to cover Julio Jones? Janis is tall, fast, good with hands, and can tackle. He can also learn how Julio Jones makes wide receiver moves.

Sam Shields was also converted from wide receiver to cornerback for his last year of college.

You need time to convert WR to CB. It is not possible to do it in one or two, not even in 10 practices... Packers have Herb Waters converting from WR to CB at this moment, and he is still work in progress...
WR does not know how to cover, he knows how to avoid cover. And those 2 things are completely different skills...
