Packers Question of the Day: Takeaways From the Win

The Packers, now 15-1 against the Buccaneers at Lambeau Field since 1990, picked up their sixth win of the season on Sunday.

Just like that, they're back at .500 and still very much alive in the playoff race. They also got some help by the Panthers, Lions and Falcons losing.

What were your takeaways from the win?

My takeaways include the Packers ground game could evolve into a force if the OL and the backs stay healthy.

I'm holding on to my theory that Hundley plays better on the road than he does at Lambeau. We'll see how he does at Cleveland this week.

Our pass rush made an appearence but I'm not sure what that means against the patchwork Bucs OL. and even with 7 sacks we still allowed 450 yards of offense.

It's disturbing that we barely defeated a team as bad as the Bucs are right now. If not for the ground game and our pass rush causing Winston's fumble and Lowry's TD we could have lost this game.

It will still take a miracle to make the playoffs but I'm not sure the word exists that would describe a win for this team against a playoff foe. Thanks, Since '61

We also missed a number of interceptable passes from Winston. Making those INTs combined with our pass rush success would have lessened the fact that our run defense wasn't very good. Are tackling drills going to be part of this week's practice? I hope so.

Regretably the CBA permits only one hitting practice per week. So not much tackling practice. Thanks, Since '61

MITM - I agree that he is playing better on the road but the sample size is small and I'm just trying to give him the benefit of the doubt since he is still a rookie QB for all intent and purposes. For now we just need him to play well in Cleveland this week. Thanks, Since '61

With a QB who throws for about 50% completion, a little over 3 yards average, and 80 odd yards? The answer to your question may be ‘delusional’.

I personally wouldn't use the term "very much alive in the playoff race". I hope they can beat the Browns and maybe finish big by beating the Vikings. This team is a very marginal contender and without Rodgers....they are nothing more than average. They have potential, but it hasn't shown itself for a whole 60 minutes.

Handsback,

This team is nowhere near average without Rodgers. The Bucs have the lowest rated pass defense in the league and Hundley, with an experienced receiving corps behind him, he couldn't even pass for 100 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. We were indeed fortunate to win that game.

The Browns are the worst team in the league, so I do expect the Packers to win that one, even without Rodgers.

I'll point out that at the end of the third quarter, the Packers had attempted something like 14 passes total. 14! 14 yards was also the longest pass play of the day. While I agree that they had to run to take the pressure off #7, there's something amiss when you're calling plays this way.

Brett Hundley is not an NFL-caliber starting QB. Mop-up emergency guy maybe, but not a week to week starting player. He just isn't. They need another plan B next year.

Need some help to have a shot at 6 seed

Hundley's time in a Packer uniform cannot end fast enough for my tastes. I'm not one of the crowd that is clamoring for TT or MM firing but that he is the backup is a major failing that falls on both of them.

Takeaways -

Hundley to be nice is very inconsistent.

Packers have a legit 1-2 combo at RB.
Williams had 21 carries for 113 yards (5.4 yards per carry) and a TD. And speaking of that TD, he got hit at the 3 and just drove the guy into the end zone. That was an impressive show of his power.
Jones had 1 carry for 20 yards and a TD. His lone carry for the game sealed the game for them. On Jones' TD he showed off his vision and burst/speed that makes him special.

Moving forward I want to see a lot of these 2.

Mathews showed up, as did Lowry.

Fackrell blocking the punt was great to see.

Davis is so close to breaking a TD on a return.

While this was not a good win, it was a win. It keeps hope alive that we may see Rodgers again this season. Which can't be soon enough with the way Hundley has played.

Takeaways...

Run game with Williams and Jones is solid, even with teams knowing the Packers are going to run because Hundley is terrible. With Rodgers and the threat of a QB that can actually throw the ball, it's going to open up this offense even more.

Run defense is good, pass defense is still terrible, even against a joke of a quarterback like Winston.

Hundley...well, he's not good at all. It's actually funny watching him throw more than 15 yards because he really can't do it and it's made even funnier by his overt cockiness. 84 yards passing on the day? C'mon, he should be embarrassed by that. Hopefully this horrendous Hundley experiment only has one more week.

Rodgers can't get back soon enough, if even just for team morale.

My take aways in general;

We need a dominant pass rusher, an adequate back up QB, a quality TE, a shut down CB (I hope that's King, and if so,then another starting CB). I'm not sure if Bulaga can hold up for an entire season, or, if Spriggs can develop, so, we probably need a starting RT.

We need to resign Adams, Burnett and Linsley at minimum(for the right price). Restructure CM3 and Cobbs salaries (they may be released) , encourage TT and DC to retire. Sign AR to his next contract and lock him in. Replace HHCD?? Dix has been bad this year, thats why I hope they keep Burnett at the right price. Maybe Jone or Brice can develop?

This is a long list. Im curious to see how this all works out.

The OL will be the strength of the draft this year. So go figure. Forget the Cm3 or Cobb restructure. Mathews is still to important to this team's defense. Cobb will not get restructured either.( with A-Rod out. ) And I still prefer Cobb returns punts. Adams , Burnett, and Linsley will get more $$ elsewhere. Can't see TT breaking the bank on any of them. It is true all three are worth paying. But NOT LONG TERM>

No way you resign Adams for anything more than number 2 receiver money, and nothing over 3 years.
Burnett you can let walk, he's just a guy, a bit better than average. Not a play maker.
Linsley I would sign, but again I wouldn't break the bank to get him.
I don't disagree at all on CM3 and Cobb.
CM3's great when he's healthy, which isn't very often.
Cobb is relatively invisible with a QB that can't wait 7-8 seconds for him to get open.

#2 Wr money would be oK. But not 3 years. I'm at two with an option. (League avg.) Only because he's stop dropping balls, and I see no other answer for A-Rod. Burnett made a difference when he was in there. But he is no Collins or woodson. He'll be over 31, and TT doesn't like to pay age. 2 years tops. Burnett will leave because this may be his last chance to make mucho bucks. Linsey? It will take what Tretter got. Cobb is in his final year. TT won't bother.

The ONLY way Adams gets 4 years is if they are convinced hes the new number one, and either Jordy, Cobb, or both are let go. They've invested heavily in their own receivers the last few years, with limited results.
I doubt they will make the same mistake again. I like Adams, but I don't think he's capable of being "the guy".

I'm just saying that if the Packers only offer 2 or 3 years, that he'll wait and test the market. Maybe that's all the better he'll do, but I'd put money down now (don't ask marpag about this) that he'd get 4 years on the open market.

The Packers can offer 4 and structure the deal so they can get out after 2 or 3 years with no cap damage over the remaining years of the deal.

The only player that TT never let test the market is A-Rod. ADams is not an All Pro. He's compared to James Jones, and we know what happened to James Jones. Does Adams want to come back or go to the West Coast? Expect TT to treat Adams like Cobb. And look how you and others want Cobb to take a pay cut. The same thing can happen to Adams. Cobb was further along than Adams, when he got the $$$. Were talking Offense here. TT has passed on several good WRs in the draft. Regardless Adams might be the 3rd round comp pick TT wants more. He still has Nelson and Cobb. Thats more than Brett had when Jennings left. Remember how good these guys were before they went to other teams. Thats another thought too. Jennings and Jones were at the top of their game. Is Adams? Will he ever be a Packers #1? We all really think not. But Adams does deserve to earn the league Average. TT will pay accordingly if Adams wants to stay in GB. The smart move is not more than 2 years (league average) with a club option for 3.

"The only player that TT never let test the market is A-Rod."

My initial digging shows that there are actually four players on the roster who have never hit the open market...
David Bakhtiari
Morgan Burnett
Mike Daniels
Clay Matthews

"Cobb was further along than Adams, when he got the $$$. "

No. Cobb had completed his 4-year rookie deal when he received his current contract from the Packers. Adams is/will be in the same place in his career.

I was going to add Mathews. I remember Daniels now etc. But the point with Cobb was development. Not end of service time. There were no Questions about Cobb. No controversy. He could catch. He was a punt returner that wouldn't mis handle the ball. Adams well-------No WR made your list.

The player to watch is Burnett. If he signs, it will be his third contract. Burnett was very young (19-20?) when the Packers signed him in 2010. (Yes he has a ring, but was IR in training camp) With DB being the coin of the league these days, even if Burnett takes a 'house discount' we are easily talking about a 15 million plus contract. Along with Adams getting something similar, that is a heavy payout for two players. One thing about your list dobber, is every player had out preformed their previous contract when the Packers resigned them. I fully expect Adams to sign along the Cobb contract, and with his age get another chance if he stays healthy.

A win is a win, yes, But a win against a team that is borderline pathetic as the Bucs is a win that still has the dirt being shoveled upon the expectations still being derived from it.

Every game a player flashes something for the highlight reel and then immediately vanishes. Whether it's a WR, Linebacker {in or out },QB {not Rodgers }DL, OL and before recently the RB positions.

Every week we get a write up,a video break down of these highlights and a low light mixed in, kudos to those that provide such, but the end result is still as it has been every week....consistency of all the wrong things.

Usually one aspect of a team comes close to crapping themselves or does every game. This team craps itself in nearly every aspect weekly, that.....

" The flatulence is so great in the room, they don't even recognize their own stench ",..Sherlock Holmes.

Is making the playoffs and keeping the string of years doing so make the season a success? Or is the winning of the SB an actual realistic belief ?

Look captain negativity is back with another string of discombobulated prose...

Can't you just enjoy a win?

Guess what? Full consistency doesn't exist in the NFL. It can't and won't; so when you say "Every game a player flashes something for the highlight reel and then immediately vanishes." it is true of everyone in the league. The NFL record is 22.5 sacks in a season. That's not even 1.5 sacks a game. So whether you like it or not those flashes are a sign of talented players.

I did enjoy the win and said so...a win is a win...which is pretty much the positive attitude most have here...what's the problem?

Tell me when this team hasn't failed in multiple facets of the game....and that includes the first 5 also because the issues were there then also...just covered up better by the 'Best Deodorant Stick' ever in GB football.

Sacks is not a stat to use as a basis for consistency....QB hurries, hits would be more better use to define the pass rush of a defense. Ours, as in the recent game vs the Bucs is a fluke for the Packer defense by all its previous performances and due more to the missing O=line than the belief that the pass rush was...as good as watched.

I cant help but think seeing how bad Hundley is and how he cannot utilize Jordy or Cobb even though Jordy caught 5 balls this week, how many receivers have come and gone in this league that had All Pro potential but never played with a half decent Quarterback. At the same time I think that guys who had Hall of Fame careers as a wide receiver with garbage QBs for the most part I am really starting to appreciate more.

My takeaways from the win:

1. The OL might just be solid next year. Especially if Evans resigns and has another year in the tank. Spriggs is improving and Murphy is intriguing.

2. We are set at RB.

3. We need new blood at WR. Preferably by resigning Adams and getting a faster player opposite him. The answer is not Janis or Davis. Either Cobb or Jordy needs to go.

4. Our TEs suck.

5. I don't buy our pass rush. CM3 had a throwback game, but I'd like to see 3-4 more before I buy anything. Perry is not a lead dog. He's a good 2nd. When healthy. We desperately need a lead dog at OLB. Biggest need on the team - and that's saying a lot.

6. Our DL should be set for the forseeable future.

7. Even assuming King becomes a #1 CB (which is far from a given), we desperately need a #2 outside CB.

8. It looks like we are set at ILB and SS for the forseeable future. Even without Burnett. But WTH happened to HHCD from last year?

9. This is not a title threatening team with ARod. It's not a .500 team without him. The pass defense is just atrocious and WILL get shredded by any competent QB.

10. I guess I'm happy they won. And I guess I want to see them make the playoffs. But unless they win it all (and I'd be stunned if that happened), the best thing that could come out of this year is Ted retiring and Dom getting fired. Neither of those will happen unless the team fails to make the playoffs.... Ugh.

"3. We need new blood at WR. Preferably by resigning Adams and getting a faster player opposite him. The answer is not Janis or Davis. Either Cobb or Jordy needs to go.

The hard part in evaluating these 2 positions is the fact that Rodgers isn't playing. Its not just that Rodgers isn't playing its that Hundley has been very inconsistent. He has open receivers he doesn't throw to way to much. Just this week Allison was as wide open as you can be for a TD. And he overthrew him.
How much better would Cobb, Nelson, Kendricks, Rodgers, Allison all look if Rodgers is throwing the ball? A lot better!

Nelson for example as of last week was tied for 4th in TD's with 6. He hadn't had a TD reception since Rodgers has went out. And it isn't that he hasn't been open because he has been.

I do agree we need more speed at the position. But its really hard evaluating those players when the QB play hasn't even been mediocre.

Fair.

But even with ARod, our WRs couldn't break open against any CBs in 2015. When ARod was merely human - instead of super human - our WRs couldn't get open.

Adams is doing that consistently now. But he's the only one. And he's no deep threat.

Ergo, ARod or not... to me, there's still not enough separation being generated by our WRs.

2015 our WR's were hurt. Nelson was out for the year, Cobb was hurt most of the year and tried to play with one arm for a lot of it. Adams tried playing on one leg for a lot of it.

Last year, they were better.

Adams is the only consistent WR, but is the only one consistently getting balls thrown his way. Adams has 31 receptions since Hundley has taken over as the starter. Nelson has 18 and Cobb has 17. Adams has almost as many receptions alone Nelson and Cobb do combined.

I do agree that the WR's don't consistently get open like we would hope they would. Adding speed would be a big thing for them. They could really use a true deep threat with speed.

How many WRs consistently get open against good Ds week in week out? Most are national names and play on teams that can throw the ball downfield somewhat.

A differentiator like speed or size would be nice. When Janis has played he has caught balls, but we don’t use him. I guess they feel Nelson and Adams are fast enough and better catch odds? Of course, if you recall the two deep throws from yesterday, any receiver would have needed a wingspan of 20 feet at least. Perhaps they will work in Clark on a play or two now instead.

Janis will leave after this year. Adams to maybe? The offense has changed to Air time. Basketball players are the new rage. It's called AIR TIME! Height, and in your face stuff. They call it athletic ability if you can hang. It's like we all want a guy that can stuff it. But I still like the steve smith's and Jerry Rices more. Timing with the QB is more important to me. The TDs come. They move the chains and become a better clutch WR.

Didn't get to see the game and maybe that is a good thing. Not many positive comments other than "it's a win" and "we have a ground game". I don't need to see ugly football to ruin an otherwise beautiful weekend.

I can't figure out how teams like New Orleans and Philly rebuilt themselves so quickly. Chip Kelly destroyed that team and the management was asleep at the wheel. Now, they are 2nd in the NFC. New Orleans couldn't stop a college team on defense - now they are riding a gamey D and solid run attack to the top of their division.

Other than a new-found backfield, the Packers are moving backwards on so many fronts - it is scary. I don't know how many more drafts we will go through to fix this team but I do know that Rodgers will be past his 'best before date' before many of the changes happen. I don't relish looking up at the Vikings for the next couple of years.

Fair. But unless Keenum has figured it out for the duration of his career, this year is an outlier for him. Keep in mind that HUGE jumps in someone's productivity suggests a regression is coming. And neither their OC, nor their HC is some famed QB guru.

Their OL is also old. And having a collectively healthy and career year for each of them too. Their roster has plenty of holes. It's just all come together for them this time through (so far). Same for the Eagles and Saints.

You're not looking at dynasties there. It's just that GBs ideas on what would come through hasn't worked. Now, they should be held accountable for that, especially since outside of 2014, not much has worked for this management/coaching staff outside of ARod being Zeus.

But we're not looking at the mid-80s' Bears in our division. Relax.

"I can't figure out how teams like New Orleans and Philly rebuilt themselves so quickly"

New Orleans absolutely nailed their draft this year. Top 4 picks are huge key players.
Their OL is much improved, Kamara is a beast.

Philly the biggest reason for them is Wentz. He is emerging as a star in this league... Cleveland has to be kicking themselves harder and harder the more they watch Wentz play.

Takeaways.....while a few players had some individually fine performances, collectively this team is a shit show.

Even with 7 sacks and constant pressure against a wounded and horrific Oline we still give up 450 yards of offense. Couldn't stop the run or the pass.

The famed Offense and QB Guru mustered a game plan that was about as bad as can be. Williams ran well, but Mike should have played Jones more...he's the one player we had that can make a game changing play (as was evidenced on his last run). Since with Hundley the receivers are essentially window dressing.

The only way things change is for MM to be fired....this team is playing well below the talent level it has on both Offense and Defense,

Exactly why MM has to go. He can't help himself. Look at all those 2nd half short pass play calls, and others leading to those great 3 and out sequences. His"plan" always overrides his abilty to adjust in a game. My God, your home, be aggressive take some chances for crying out loud.

Disclaimer, I'm not super knowledgeable, and I saw this game on TV. But my takeaway is that I'd like to find out how often Clark and Daniels are on the field at the same time. The one defensive play I remember from the game is seeing Clark and Daniels destroying the pocket and some other guy cleaning it up for a sack.

Actually, one or the other has been banged up for most of the season. I hope yesterday saw Lowry finally translate off season promise into in season performance. If that continues then we have a chance at consistent interior disruption

My takeaway is besides some of the staple contributors on this site like RC Packer Fan, Since 61, & Nick Perry everyone has lost their ability to be objective and enjoy a win. Everyone is emotional that the tone is "they suck, everyone sucks, even though they won and by the way the coaches suck, we should of won by fifty, Hundley is a terrible human being."

At least some people are positive about the running backs.

Spud, I don't contribute that often, but, trust me, I and others DO enjoy the win. This has been (so far) an interesting year in the comments section: when Hundley does well "we'll get draft picks", when he doesn't "we need to start Callahan", when the Packers lose "MM (or some five-year-olds name like: McPuffy, McFatty, etc.) should be fired because he's so predictable on his play calls, when the Packers win MM "got lucky" or "finally used people the right way". It's amazing to me to see the week to week on/off the bandwagon comments. I love this team, and (despite Tarynfor12 thinking I'm just a "cheerleader") I recognize there are a lot of warts that need to be fixed. That won't stop me from cheering a win!! I honestly don't think Rodgers will play this year but I would be ecstatic if he can and the Packers are at least in the picture for a playoff seed. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who actually doesn't think Capers should be gone, but that's McCarthy's call (I personally hope his debacle with waiting so long to fire Slocum will make him at least consider it this off-season, sigh.). Packers fans have been spoiled by the Favre/Rodgers years. I'm just happy to have such a great organization for my team. Some people will scoff at the "Packer people" team makeup (and we've certainly had some "less than angels" from time to time) but it is one of the things I am most proud of being a "stockholder" (yes, I know its a worthless piece of paper) for the Pack. Trust me there are more "objective" people out there than you may suspect. I read the comments section from CHTV and the old Jersey Al site for years until finally deciding to occasionally comment. There are a LOT of us cheering the wins! Keep the faith my friend. Go, Pack, Go.

"...objective and enjoy a win." LOL.

I enjoyed the win immensely. My takeaway is that nothing we did on defense should be taken too seriously given the quality of the opponent. The pass rush shouldn't be overly encouraging given TB's OL. Still, Clark dominated as one would expect. I don't think CM3 rediscovered his pass rushing mojo, but demonstrated that he is still fast, alert, aggressive, and can be a good complementary rusher if others are stirring the pot for him. The DBs held two really good WRs in check quite nicely. We ran the ball well, but TB had what, two starting DL out. Still, Williams found the holes; moreover, he found the creases and showed better vision, and some speed. I don't have any concern about Jordy due to this game: his skillset just doesn't align with BH's very well. I do have some concern about Cobb's lack of production, but that's not due to this game, and it did not increase or decrease.

Even though because of all of the draft position needs, I almost wanted them to lose, I'm still happy they won. Always am when they do. But because I love this team so much, if it means adding talent and getting rid of some of the boobs who run this team, so be it.

I get to see the Pack in Cleveland next Sunday.

Since Hundley won against the Bucs, he'll start. If McCarthy, as he's done in the past multiple times, doesn't game plan down to the level of the competition, I'd like to see Callahan play IF (a) there's a three touchdown lead or more and (b) the Browns aren't shoving the Packers' defense all over the field.

If these things happen, I'd like to see Callahan for a quarter and no changes to the other players and the game plan. See if Callahan can do the things Hundley was expected to do with the starters.

We now know what the Packers have in Hundley and it isn't much. He's not a NFL QB. He could be a good RB or WR. He has the athletic ability. In some respects, he reminds me of Tim Tebow.

If the opportunity presents itself, I think McCarthy should give Callahan some quality playing time. But only IF the opportunity presents itself.

My takeaways from this game is, a win is great, but beating teams like Tampa Bay, Chicago, and barely beating them keeps everyone from Mark Murphy on down TT, MM, DC around thus wasting another year of Aaron Rodgers career, and putting this team further away from the ultimate goal winning the Super bowl, and bringing Vince home where he belongs.

I see a lot more positives in the performances of young individual players than I expected. It is potentially exciting for the future. However, I have to say that with a QB performing at Hundley’s level yesterday, it took a heck of a terrible day for the opposing QB for us to beat a really bad team. At least Hundley was not a top 5 draft pick. Imagine how we would feel if we had Winston as our promised land!
