Packers Question of the Day: Martellus Bennett's Disappointing Tenure

After the Packers released TE Martellus Bennett with a "failure to disclose injury" designation on Wednesday, a very uneventful tenure in Green Bay officially reached its end.

Was Bennett the worst big-name unrestricted free agent signing in the Ted Thompson era?

Total bust as it turned out. Good twitter follow and that's about it. Actually leaves us very short handed at TE position now

Jeff Saturday was the previous unrestricted free agent that Ted Thompson signed.

I would suggest that Ted limit himself to scouring the undrafted rookie free agents.

The whole NFL free agency thing is just too hard for Ted.

I think you forgot about Julius Peppers and Letroy Guion, both signed in 2014. Saturday was signed in 2012.

Nah, I think you failed to notice the word UNRESTRICTED free agent.

Peppers and Guion were on the street.

Ted does better with street guys, but unrestricted free agency that impacts the compensatory picks computation is something Ted just does not really like to take part in and it shows.

In fact, I was using the plain meaning of words and not some technical distinction of the CBA used to determine compensatory picks. A distinction that is utterly meaningless when it comes to the issue you raise.

Guion and Peppers were unrestricted from signing anywhere they pleased. And free to do so at their own whim. Sounds like an unrestricted free agent to me, even if the CBA classifies them in a different way because they were cut, instead of having their contract expire. Either way, they got to where they were because their existing team allowed them to that place.

It seems to me that you are trying to squint hard to ignore the success and focus on the failures by using a court room-esque technicality. Which seems rather telling to me. Like you have to throw a little misdirection to make your case. But hey, feel free to stand on the meaningless distinction that only matters to an unrelated issue. Maybe nobody besides me will notice.

Well I can understand how those lacking basic knowledge of the different types of NFL free agency might get confused, especially when they are desperate to defend their favorite General Manager for his , so I recommend you take a moment and educate yourself by reading the article below.

https://lombardiave.com/2017/02/28/ted-thompson-free-agency/

Here is how the article begins:

"Free agency is a much more nuanced event than we tend to give it credence for being. The free agency we usually think of — the one where starry names get paid market-setting deals in early March every offseason –is just one of multiple parts of this team-building concept."

Even if Bennett didn't knowingly fail to disclose an injury, it seems pretty clear he did knowingly try to screw GB over. He signed the nice contract, but right from the start he obviously wasn't in it. There is no way he ever intended to give the Packers their money's worth.

Good riddance, "Captain of Fun." Jackass.

It isn't clear to me. Bennett can do a lot of harm to this franchise on his way out of town. Many players probably will listen to what he has to say about TT, the Packers, the City of Green Bay and the Wisconsin populace.

It will be interesting to see what all comes out from this. It seems like there is a lot more to this then what has been said.
Also do the Packers try to get back $$$ from Bennett?
That will be interesting to see.

For the Packers the question is whats next?
What roster move do they make? They have 2 open rosters spots with Bulaga going to IR and now Bennett released.
Do they bring up a WR? They have 3 of them (Clark, Yancey, McCaffrey). Do they bring up Kerridge? Do they bring up Gilbert? One spot might be saved for Spriggs.

Spriggs is practicing now and eligible to return next week. I think he'll be activated quickly and play RT for the final 7 weeks. How he performs will go a long way toward whether Bulaga comes back in 2018. Bulaga is a good player when healthy but he's just not healthy enough. I have to think the Packers want someone that is more reliable.

Yeah, i believe Spriggs will be the player next week. I think it would be a great time to see if Spriggs can play (assuming he is ready). Let him have half a season as the starter. So that is one spot.
As I just said below I would love to see Clark brought up.

I think the more likely move will be Kerridge or Gilbert

" For the Packers the question is whats next?"

What difference does it make!? The issues are to big for any one or two players to make that aren't already on the starting roster. The guys that need to step up can't either because of their lack of ability or that ability has already been witnessed and is dried up.

Good questions. The Packer front office is led by a 10 year NFL veteran. Up and down that group is other veteran NFL players that TT has hired. The Packer President is a long time and very successful old time NFL safety. For all the screaming from fans, this Packer team is as close to a player's team as one gets in the NFL. And Bennett screwed this org. and it's players over. One thing about NFL players, they may forgive, but they don't forget. We will know how angry the Packers are if players start talking during this season. As for the team I expect we will see Spriggs active this week, and starting the next. MM like FB on his 53, so expect we will see Kerridge very soon. ( Of course if I keep saying that every other week, it has to come true some day.... 0:)

Either way, Packer Nation will find a way to move forward. It survived the 70s and 80s with the Lambeau sell-out streak intact, after all. It will make it through another 8 games without Rodgers.

I've been around since the 60's and watch every game whether great, good, bad. But a true fan doesn't hide their head in the sand when awful is obvious and should scream their distaste for the product being presented as it's my right to do so and should be expected.
Never liked kool-aid especially the kind that is served by many of the so-called fans that pass it off as true fandom. No matter how hard one tries to talk a C/C- player into a B or higher....crap always shows itself for what it is. This Packer toilet is severely backed up with crap and why it always shows itself regardless of the plunging done by deniers.

Either way, being someone that became aware of the Packers during the Bart Starr coaching era when I was just a kid and been a fan ever since, I kind of chuckle when the people that only knows the Favre and Rodgers era starts talking about what it means to be a Packer fan.

Considering A Rod is on the shelf for the rest of the season I wouldn't think it would be fair to say that signing M Bennett was a bust! There is just a small body of work to judge him by. Four games played with A Rod were pretty sub par but I at least I think he would have been able to make a few big plays with A Rodgers at the helm. I never cared for him, he's a classic head case just like his brother and I'm glad Ted Thompson gave him the Das Boot! This will clear up some Cap Space so there is some good that will come out of this.

When he signed, i let myself get caught up in the hype. In hindsight, it was easy to see that signing Bennett was a mistake. I'm glad to see the Packers have admitted to the mistake and cut ties.

There is widespread speculation the Packers will go after the pro-rated portion of his SB. I hope they get it back. Otherwise there is a $4.2 mil dead money hit on the books for 2018. That's not a crippling number but more than what Evans, House and Brooks got for their 1 yr deals this year.

I wonder if the NFL teams would ever insist on putting signing bonuses in a type of third-party escrow account, whereby the player can only takeout the pro-rata portion of his contract he's already earned.

That way you can ensure it hasn't already been spent and you don't have the awkward; " Um... please leave and give us back a lot of the money we already gave you." conversation.

You can't blame TT for signing Bennett. It looked like a good fit, based on his performance the previous couple of years and the Packer's need for some blocking ability at the position. Just one of those that didn't pan out. I'm hoping that the Ravens don't resign Crockett Gilmore (on IR with an ACL), and GB can get him at a much cheaper price than Bennett. He's very similar in size and speed to Bennett, and a very capable blocker and pass catcher. I've followed him since his high school days, and the man is all football player.

I can blame Ted.

Bennett was a known headcase who had focused more on his activism than his craft, and he made it clear he was going to do just that in Green Bay.

I never cared about his politics; I cared that he brought his politics to work.

Lazy routes, inconsistent hands, a stupid penalty endangering an early game--what a disaster. Then to top it off, he raised a racial power fist during a song meant to unite Americans and honor veterans.

Bennett was a divisive, under-performing headcase. Anyone with eyes and some shred of honesty could see that early on.

Oh yes, I can blame Ted.

Flack, that's completely untrue (though I still enjoyed your post--good humor).

For most of Ted's tenure, I've been a Ted defender. I fully support the draft-heavy philosophy. But in recent years, Ted has made too many mistakes, leaving Aaron Rodgers to be the Dutch boy plugging holes.

Ted will retire after this season, and the Bennett fiasco will fade from view. Ted's legacy will be one mixed with highs and lows, but certainly not a failure.

That's my honest view of Ted Thompson.

We talk about TEs in this offense, but the TE is just another pass-catcher in this system. It's not geared to specifically feature anyone consistently. Under the current system, especially if #12 is under C, there's no real reason to splurge on a TE, so long as there are other good pass-catchers around #12.

If you don't understand how a TE with the ability to be a legitimate threat down the deep seam makes plays happen all over the field, you might actually believe that a TE is just a 3rd down go to guy to keep a drive going to get a 1st down.

I'm sure I'm alone here, but I really hope McCapers does something bold with this last roster spot (Spriggs will take Bulaga's spot).

It's time to activate Michael Clark.

First, we have few redzone threats, and that's Clark's specialty.

Second, we'll release either Jordy or Randall after the season (perhaps both, with their salaries), and the next 8 games provide a great opportunity to see how Clark develops.

Third, Clark provides a unique dimension; a huge target for our struggling QB. He certainly couldn't be worse than Bennett--you can't fall off the floor.

C'mon McCapers, do something exciting for once. Strike some fear into 5'11" CB's. This season is over, so don't wait until Week 14 to start seeing what we have.

I personally would love that move. Also Hundley likely has practiced with Clark a lot so he is probably familiar with him. Clark is a guy that Hundley might feel comfortable just throwing it up and letting him go up and catch it. There aren't many DB's that can out jump Clark.

I don't 100% agree that Nelson and/or Cobb will be released. They might be but I don't think its a guarantee.

The one player that I think he could take over for is Allison. Allison has done nothing for the team this year. I thought he was going to have a good year. And that hasn't happened.

I was thinking that too. Hundley and Clark have likely practiced together a lot.

My thoughts on Jordy amd Randall are no slam on them, by the way. I just think this team needs to rework its cap in a big way this offseason, so it can rebuild--not reload, but rebuild--quickly, for Aaron's final 5-6 years.

Jordy/Randall are declining vets with high pricetags. I think one will ne gone. I love them both, but I wish both would be gone after this season.

Nelson has been very effective playing out of the slot, and I suspect that will be his role going forward. I have a hard time seeing him dismissed prior to the end of his contract after next season. I'm coming around to your position on Cobb but I think that will have a lot to do with what happens with Adams. You can't completely empty the cupboard for #12.

I agree on Nelson in the slot. I just question whether his pricetag and declining burst justify keeping him next year.

But you're right about dumping too many weapons from Aaron's comfort zone. I would still do it, but I don't expect the next GM to share my view.

He's 32 right now and will turn 33 in the spring. Still a very effective receiver now, and he's got only one more year on his deal. Sure, cutting him saves almost $10M against the cap, but he's still good.

I think some of it will depend on who the GM is.

I disagree about Cobb being a declining vet. He was having a really good year with Rodgers.
Honestly I don't want either gone. Maybe they rework deals for them, but to me they are still good players. Can't get rid of everyone. It takes WR's a long time to learn the offense and get comfortable with Rodgers. So why get rid of 2 of them? Our offense will suffer if they were to do that.

I don't think its a complete rebuild. They need to add to the offense. They need to rebuild the defense. They need a new D coordinator, and come in with a difference system.

My biggest problem with Cobb is his pricetag versus his health He gets banged up easily, and he's just too expensive.

But can he play? Absolutely. I guess our biggest disagreement is the state of the team (I say rebuild, you say reload), and that affects what we'd do with big contracts for older players.

Honestly if they were in cap trouble I think it would be a bigger issue. But the Packers do a fantastic job with the cap.
And lets be honest. Thompson isn't going after any big time free agents.

So I think a lot of it depends on if Thompson is back or not. (which I would guess he will be).

Thompson might not be going after any big time free agents but I expect we'll need good cap space to cover A-Rod's new contract, which will be higher than Matt Stafford's, probably in the $30m/yr range.

Cutting Jordy is nuts. Cobb possibly, but Jordy, no way. How soon we forget last year. Need a tall fast wr to develop alongside him. Should of drafted that position 3 years ago. But like S, LB, TE it always takes 5 years .

I was surprised to see Davis playing offensive snaps against Detroit, although that only seemed to be in the first half. Davis and Janis have been voted off the island with regard to offensive personnel.

https://www.acmepackingcompany.com/by-the-numbers/2017/11/7/16617800/pac...

As the snap counts show, MM is so married to his 11 personnel group that he won't deviate much even when #12 isn't the one throwing the football. I think that's a sure sign that he's not adapting well to a new QB.

I loved seeing Davis getting some snaps. He has serious speed. Use it.

That first drive they really mixed and matched personnel which I think works well with Hundley. But later when they went to the no huddle it seemed to get Hundley into a rhythm.

I think the 11 personnel in this last game was more due to being behind by 2+ TD's. They had to score fast so they went to the 11 personnel and no huddle.

To miss so badly on Bennett is troubling. From an organizational standpoint, we are not drafting well, we are not using FA well and we are net losing talent each year. Having Ted Thompson sitting in bleachers for the college season is not helping this team on any front.

So Bennett is gone because that smell got bad but I think the rot still exists.

And compare that to what John Schneider has done in Seattle this year -- Brown, Richardson are in-season steals that shore up OT and DE for the Seahawks. Wish Schneider were still with the Packers -- would be so nice to see Brown and Richardson in Green and Gold.

And why getting into NFL FA is something that should be done cautiously.

3-5 guys per year on deals like House, Evans and Brooks is a great use of FA. They all signed for 1 yr at less than $4 mil. Like those 3, some will work out, some not and some in between. But you are not locking in to anything. It's casual dating, not getting married. It might turn into a long-term relationship and it might not.

Committing to multiple years at way above $5 mil/yr is like getting a mail order bride. You don't really know what you're getting in to and it probably won't work out like you expect. That was definitely the case with Bennett.

Yes, agree in some ways, but from a cap perspective, the Bennett contract was a one year, $8.05M deal. Any deal with a reasonable one year out has some caution built in.

No doubt that the Bennett deal is not a cap crippler on par with the most spectacular FA failures. I may be dating myself to cite Albert Haynesworth but he's is the most spectacular FA failure that comes to mind.

Worst case, Bennett deal was a mid-level FA contract that cost them one $4 mil/yr guy in 2018 to square the cap with what they gave him in 2017. If they get the SB back, it is exactly what I advocate should be done...1 yr, $4 mil or under.

So yeah, there is a lot of truth in that, Reynoldo.

Seemed like a good idea at the time - he contributes to New England's super bowl season - he can bring positive attitude and skills to GB.

But, first he sees the lower level of accountability and higher level of disfunction compared to New England and his enthusiasm starts to drain. Then AR goes down and he knows there is no chance.

Season over. Chicago Bears deja vu.

So, why should he beat himself up for no good reason.

Another great move by Ted Thompson the incompetence of this organization is mind blowing.
1. At the end of last year mike mcarthy screwed the packers for the 2017 _ 2018 seas on by resigning Dom Capers intead of firing him.
2. Packers also went and spent the 1st 4 rounds on defense just to satisfy once again Dom caperd when former green bay def players are having now having steller seasons j.pepper 7.5 sacks, micah hyde, casey hayward.
3. Mcarthy lies when he says he has complete confidence in Brett Hundley as he won't even let him pass beyond the line of scrimmage. Mcarthy has been hiding behind aaron rogers coat tails and brett favre coat tail for years. Unbelievable so predictable 4th and 2 bubble screen to r.cobb for a loss. The detroit safety came running 10 yards deep to throw cobb for a loss.. tony romo explained this play on full detail when you used the same play against the saints. Pathetic.

4. Ted Thompson "failure is the shadow of greatness" you had so many opportunities to get jared cook resigned and blew it,but then looked like a crafty entrepreneur by signing Martellius Bennett . Now you have egg all over your face and look like a complete $$$=÷!!!!. And now former Doug Pederson QB coach of the packers is going to take the Eagles to the Super Bowl...HA HA !!! The Packers are now the laughing stock of the NFL!! Thanks Ted!!
5. Now we have radio / tv talk of a.rogers that he should leave this organization for all of the incompetance. ..Another and another. ..and another wasted year.
6. YOU HAVE NO PROBLEMS RELEASING M.BENNET FOR AN UNDISCLOSED INJURY BUT YOU KEEP DUMB CRAPPERS FOR HIS UNDISCLOSED "BRAIN" INJURY.
7. This organization is downright pathetic. It is time to get rid of TT, mike mcarthy and dom capers. .what good are they? They are NOT going to win any more games this year. Well then anybody can do that. .no doubt we will go 4_12..no doubt. Absolutely no doubt.
All we need to do is keep rogers and its an easy 10_6 season.

What a total and complete TURD of a human being, and a worthless football player at this point.

I told you ALL that thought he was at the very least a good blocker, that he was DOGGING it on running plays too, and something wasn't right with this guy.

This was a colossal mistake and failure by TT to think he passed on Cook for this worthless goof. There must have been something really, really fraudulent and bad going on with this guy that they cut bait on him only 8 games into the season.

Now I have to consider the fact that perhaps Thompson has really slipped in proficiency and ability, and many of you are right about that. I thought the talent was at least pretty good, but now I'm starting to question how competent this guy was that he could make this HUGE of a mistake. They clearly didn't properly vet this guy before they signed him. If TT is really off the deep end in ability that he had to go to this level of desperation on a high risk player, the Packers may be in deep, deep trouble when you couple it with the fact they have an old, senile Def Coordinator as well. Bad times in GB, and a disaster of a season.

People are pretty revisionist about the Cook situation.

The packers didn't just "pass" on Jarret Cook.

They offered Cook a nice contract. There was back and forth. Then, one day, Jarret Cook's agent released a press statement that they were "Done negotiating the with Packers".

The Packers signed Bennet 3 hours later for basically the same amount that was reportedly being turned down by Cook's agent.

I would have liked to see Cook remain a Packer. However, Cook's talk about wanting to play in Green Bay did not jive with the hard-line approach his representation took when publicly announcing they were walking away from the negotiating table.

I completely stand by the organization's decision to say, "Enough is enough. We don't play those games."

Well I guess we know why Belichick didn't want Bennett back.

He was worth taking a gamble on, out of desperation TT signed him and Kendricks, trying to make up for not signing Cook, who Rodgers publicly stated he wanted back. TT doesn't listen. At least Kendricks has played well.

Question is will they bring up Tight Ends Emanuel Bird from the PS to get back to three Tight Ends? Still have half a season left. Or will TT try to pick someone off the street with NFL experience?

I'd like them to bring up Reggie Gilbert. Played well in pre-season. Time to see what he can do. Oh and cut Kyler Fackrell. He isn't worth the roster spot.

You can "BELIEVE" the packer story about MB if you want, remembering the stories about Favre and Josh S as well

but there is no fact that MB 'hid' anything when he was signed, just a baseless and unsupported allegation almost designed to get dim wit fans to jump to the "conclusion" of when the "HIDING" was

it is just as likely the injury was during this season as prior to signing

there is NOTHING to indicate one way or the other just people who can not think

Wow guys, I just stopped by to voice my opinion on Bennett and look what I found, I'll leave it alone!
As for that opinion on Bennett, to me its just one more example of Albino Ted's incompetence. Jared Cook was "money" towards the end of last year and TT basically kicked him to the curb to sign Bennett And then, if McPuffy had anything to do with it then give him equal blame.
We have seen in recent weeks the talent Ted has assembled, it ain't pretty, and McPuffy's insistence on keeping Dom DeLuise Capers employed hasn't helped in using what talent is there. There's plenty of stupidity to go around, the defense has not been WAF since 2010!
Clean house! If Murphy doesn't have the balls to dump Albino Ted then it's time to dump Murphy and start over. Bob Harlan was never satisfied with making a first round exit from the play-offs while Murphy and Thompson appear to be. Thompson threw away the tail end of Favre's career and is now doing likewise to Rodgers! Get his a$$ out of town, soon!

Bash Bennett? Bash TT for signing Him? No to both. TT tried. Win some lose some. But lets look at the writing on the wall here. Retire?( Ummmm Brett Farve?) Why did he want out? A-Rod said they would be just fine at the beginning of the season. New England wins year after year. Bennett thrived in their system. When Brady was gone, they still won. With a Back -up. Bennett had to learn a system that takes a Wr, 3 years here. The players no longer are on the same page. Being he's with New England, it had to be about the Packers. Winning, and a system that knows how to win. The money was no longer important. Winning and getting out of GB was. If I'm a player, I'm not going to want to play for a program always rebuilding. Always giving up yards. Always on the trainer's Table. Pride is forever. If Bennet wanted to be with the TE Elite. You don't wait for breaks. You make them. Bennet made his again. Out of GB. He saw what we don't. Bitching! Bull shit! Blame, And Pain. Were Packer fans. He wasn't.

( Jennings could have stayed etc. ) He Cared Nothing for the Fans. = = He doesn't get paid by the fans. Bennett thought he was special. He's been with three different teams. Players that get the big money know how to invest it. We all know $$$$ changed the game. And so did Free Agency. Bennett was an embarrassment= = To TT! TT has not drafted good players. The enemy will Target a couple of players that are the glue for the team. Bennett was never the glue, and knew he won't make the Hall of Fame. Especially Here. His name will be attached to the Patriots and their Super-bowl rings. He got his money from GB. And he'll get that same money with the Patriots. If you make it in the NFL now. You can play for anyone. I'm not defending Bennet. I'm saying the NFL changed. Players have Agents. They don't play for hospital bills. Smart players Avoid the Hits.
