Packers Question of the Day: Capers' Future

It's been long-debated for the last five years. 2017 may be the last straw for Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers, and many fans seem to believe so.

To be fair, many of them have been calling for Capers' head since the 2013 playoffs.

Where do you stand?

Capers really has no shot to be successful in the current environment. This team was build on the notion that the offense would dominate the time of possession (putting up plenty of points in the process), while the defense only had to take away the big play. Not to mention that the defense would not be exhausted when the 4th quarter rolls around. Down goes Rodgers, time of possession plummets, and you're asking the defense to do something they are simply not built to handle. It's easy to point the finger at Capers, but at this point I don't think it really matters who is in charge here.

So if Rodgers going down is the excuse for this year, how about the previous 4-5 years? Different players, same garbage product. Not to mention, the defensive players that do leave end up leading the league in stats for their position the following season on their new team. How about that?

The players are good. Capers makes them garbage. He has to get out.

Capers has been the WHOLE problem believe me
Look at the Falcons nothing has changed except the offensive Coordinator sarcisian. He is using the same playbook kyle shanahan used..the exact same playbook. .they even have a new loud stadium and more fan support but look they are now scoring 14 less than last year ..julio jones has 1 TD. ..he used to have 14-18 TDs per year..devonte freeman had 22TDs last year. .M.Ryan was MVP last year...Atlanta is 4_3 or 4_4. Atlanta probably wont even make the playoffs.. WAKE UP..Their OC is not creative with the plays and does not know when to call the right play at the right time...just like Dom Capers HE SUCKS !! HE NEEDS to be FIRED like yesterday!

The past three years this d, with different personnel, another issue, it's always changing, could not get off the field.
I agree their wisdom was Rogers just puts up more points and we hold them off.
The pass d under capers is non existant, has been non existant and he is still there.

It absolutely matters who is in charge - as general manager, head coach and defensive coordinator. Having a HOF quarterback has hidden so many shortcomings on this team. It's definitely time (way past time) to move on from Capers. He should go now and the other two evaluated at the end of the season.

I just saw a tweet that the LA Rams are in a position to go from the worst scoring offense in the league last year to the best scoring offense in the league this year. They've added some players and their QB is yr 2, not a rook. But there is no way that the new coaching staff isn't making a difference there.

It can happen in GB with the defense, too.

I agree that someone has to go. My estimation is that we have talent but can't get it to function properly. Do we have enough talent, no!

My call is time for TT to retire or move to a consultant role and get your next GM in place. Start the hunt for a new DC before the season ends so we aren't left with table scraps.

We will probably be top 15 if not top 10 in the draft next year so let a new GM have at it.

The defense hasn’t had any fire or heart since Kevin Green left. They say the defense takes on the personality of the defensive coordinator. Capers is passive and meek, shockingly so is the defense.
IT IS TIME!

I'll believe Capers is gone when I see it. MM refuses to change and TT refuses to change and Murphy refuses to change.

If I was Rodgers I would decline starting negotiations on a new contract with the current regime.

When Favre started thinking he held the cards and deserved a voice in offseason moves was the beginning of a very ugly ending. I hope Rodgers is smart enough to learn from those mistakes that he observed up close and personal.

Finwiz, I know how you feel. I haven't seen that much of Hundley, but what I've seen of Hundley & the Defense is more than enough. I'm basically Unofficially Done. I haven't looked at the schedule, but unless they have another Sunday or Monday Night game, I doubt very much whether we'll get another GB game on TV out here? Unless I go to the Casino to watch, (And I Won't), unless they do something with the QB situation, I'm sure I won't see another game. I doubt very much that they would put that team on Sunday or Monday night again.

Hundley has had his chance. Why not give Callahan a couple of games? What's the difference?? From the little I've seen of both QB's, I thought Callahan was better? That's just me. If he can't do it, go out and get someone else. How hard can it be? Hold tryout's!! Someone will show up.

I agree with you on the Flag Issue, & so do Most Others. If it were me, anyone who sat, or who took a knee would be turning in his uniform before the Kickoff. There is a Legitimate Protest there, but the Flag or Anthem IS NOT the place for it.

I know you don't Bet, but it's Too Bad you can't get a Parlay Sheet somewhere? You be surprised how much you'd enjoy the Cleveland, Oakland, Denver & even the GB games, if you had $10 bet & could Win $110 or $120. Every team in the league becomes your Home Team for as little as $5. Try It!! You Might Like It!!

i'm a lot happier deer hunting on Sunday's the last 2 weeks and will continue until they revamp this whole coaching staff. Capers has been terrible for 7 years and MM keeping him on has kept this team in neutral since the SB win. both need to hit the road and get some fresh minds and energy on this team. also, put TT out to pasture and let some young guy with vision take the helm.

Seems unlikely that AR will get 5 rings but I'm assuming he would really like at least 1 more. And I'm guessing that he wants to stay in GB. So maybe he/we should be thanking the Vikings for this non-career threatening injury.

I will always be a Packer fan. I'm just loyal that way. I'm assuming most Packers fans are like that too. I flew out to Chicago this past summer and drove up to GB with my wife and 1 kid to watch a practice. My first time seeing Lambeau. But watching management let this team waste away is a major 'dis' to those statues in front of the building. After all these years, every reporter is finally in agreement. I haven't found a single one that is supporting current management. MM basically staked his career on Hundley last week. Nobody knows what MM sees in Hundley. They let an exciting Hill go. There is almost nothing anyone can say to defend DC anymore. How many more years of tackling issues can we stand to see?

This is a slow to change management. But something at the top has to change. And if it is going to change in the off-season, might as well do something now to get that moving and send a message.

We have all these freaking injuries cause the defense CANNOT get OFF the field...Detroit did not have to punt the ball 1x Monday night...go back on google and look at all the old videos from sportscasters who constantly talk about how bad the packers defense has been ..my gosh...
1.Micah hyde is now a star
2. Casey heyward had 7 interceptions 2016
3. Julius Peppers has 7.5 sacks with 8 games left. ..
4.Devon House had a lot of interceptions on 2015 with the Jaguars. ..

Looks as if the woodwork finally gave way.

Wiz, 50 years?

Remember Randy Wright? Keith Woodside? Terdell Middleton? Barty Smith? Rich Wingo? Ezra Johnson? Steve Luke? Steve Odom? Ken Ellis? Ron Hallstrom? Rich McGeorge? Dave Roller? John Anderson?

I watched every chance I could from NY, FL, WA, IA, CA, IN, CA (again) back when I had to go to a friends house who had a gigantic dish out in the back yard to pick up satellite feeds. All the dollars I wasted in bars just to watch the Pack play... All the hours spent inside during a glorious fall day... I just cant stop even though I detest what the NFL has become. I still love my franchise (I am an owner), but I no longer watch any other NFL games, really, absolutely just cannot stomach the product. But I still tune in for the Packers... I am deranged.

I remember and understand watching a team that will not compete for a championship. The 70's and 80's were very real for me. I still watched... every week... I still will, but I really DO NOT SUPPORT this current HC, staff and GM anymore. That is far more difficult problem than watching players I know will not win a championship.

I completely understand. That was well said. I was around prior to Lombardi, with Lombardi ,up to Mike Holmgren, and then Mike McCarthy.
All of them won Super Bowls. The down times in between we're a struggle,
I hope this organization realizes that Aaron Rodgers is going to be one of the best of all times. With that said the defense needs to be fixed. I believe Dom Capers had a great run in the NFL and the
Green Bay Packers. It's time for him to step down and retire. Start the process now! I would like to see another championship before Rodgers retires.A top 10 defense and a healthy Rodgers would be would put the Packers in the winners circle.I certainly think it can be done.

Monday's game should be the last straw. No way your defense shouldn't be able to get some stops against a division foe, that can't run the football. The Packers are not out flanked in talent. The defensive scheme needs to be simplified to let the players play faster. Those weren't darts thrown by Stafford into tight coverage. Those were mostly passes thrown to receivers wide open. He threw the ball 33 times and was sacked once. I will say our offensive line did not play a very good game either. DC has got to go if he refuses to simplify his scheme.

Yes it is time for Dom to go. But as I look over the TT drafts for these past 5 years, it will be no easy task for the next guy, particularly on defense.

Aside from Kenny Clark, maybe Martinez and maybe Clinton-Dix the drafts have been poor. These last 5 drafts are full of guys like Datone Jones, Khyri Thornton, Josh Boyd, Nate Palmer, Carl Bradford, Sam Barrington, Demetri Goodson, Randall, Rollins, Jake Ryan, Kyler Fackrell, Dean Lowry. These are the building blocks. We'll see what Kevin King, Josh Jones and Montavius Adams bring to the dance but still.

The problem obviously doesn't stop at Dom.

MM: Dom we have not forced a punt is 6 quarters

Capers: Yeah I heard that somewhere is that bad?

MM: yeah it's pretty bad, now we can't score points and cannot stop anyone.

DC: Well how about some more "Nitro?"

MM: No, that does not work

DC: Well maybe I put 10 guys on the field like I did twice against NO? We'll call it the "double five"

MM: Seriously, if this continues, you might be fired

DC: No I won't

MM: yeah you're right

This article asks the wrong question.

The question shouldn't be whether Capers should go--which is such a "given" it should be added as the 11th Commandment--but rather...

...who from this mess should stay?

Disagreement with the leadership doesn’t mean you hate your team. Just as disagreeing with a political party/regime doesn’t mean you hate your country. Looking forward to change in Packer leadership. I never saw what the big deal over TT and MM was. I just don’t see greatness. Never have.

In 2013, I posted here very strongly that Capers should be fired. Basically, back then I saw the same problems with the defense that we are seeing now.

When Rodgers was injured in 2013 I expected Capers and the Packers defense to step up and carry the team until Rodgers could return. The Packers were 5-2 when Rodgers went down in 2013 and they went 0-4-1 over the next 5 games culminating in an embarrassing 42-10 loss to the Lions on Thanksgiving Day.

Finally Matt Flynn and the offense got going, the division foes (particularly the Lions) collapsed and Rodgers returned for the final game against the Bears to pull out the division title.

During that season Capers defense allowed an 8+ minute game winning close out drive by the Bears!!!, a 7+ minute close out game winning drive by the Eagles and finally a 5+ minutes game winning drive by the 49ers in the playoff game ending with the 9ers game winning FG.

Let's not forget the defensive collapse in the Seattle NFCCG in 2014, the OT loss to the Cardinals in 2015 and the no tackle defense against Atanta in the 2016 NFCCG.

Now in 2017 the defense can't even force a punt.

I won't even get into the lost games during the regular season where the defense blew a lead late in the game that cost the Packers better playoff seeding and home field advantage.

I've said for years, this defense needs an infusion of a nasty attitude, needs to tackle better, needs a pass rush and needs to get off the field on 3rd down. For at least 5 seasons now we have seen the same problems on defense and now with Rodgers injured the chimera is gone and the defense and Capers are exposed for what they are, "The don't get off the field until our opponent scores, even if we need to commit a stupid penalty to keep them on the field, defense."

This has been and remains unacceptable. Fire Capers Now. Thanks, Since '61

Since'61, I couldn't agree with your post more. I just wish you would have mentioned a couple of names that cost us those 2 games.

Tramon Williams had the coverage, or I should say Lack there of, on the TD in the Seattle game. If I remember correctly, I think he fell down at the Goal Line. Beaten as Usual.

And then of coarse The Great, Clutch, Kicker, Mason (Cross Bar) Crosby missed a Field Goal in Regulation or that game with the Cardinals would have never gone to OT.

This Defense has been Terrible since they Drafted THE GREAT AJ HAWK, & paid him Millions. A HORENDOUS WASTE of a #5 Draft Choice. About as Bad as Paying Mathews $14.5 Million a year??, or Shields & Williams $8 Million a year. What a Joke!!

Spot on Since 61. So essentially we need to HAVE a Defense. The 4 basic fundamentals. Not the charade we have been rolling out there expecting anything different. Worse part is all the imposter "packages" that were supposed to do the basics. Rush the Passer , Cover, Tackle, and gee, stop the other team when it matters most! And with a HOF QB get the damn ball back in his hands.

If this doesn’t wake up the Board of Directors nothing will. It’s time. Actually way past time! I think AR is the best QB to ever play the game. We are so fortunate - but wow what a waste. We should have had 2 more SB’s since 2010. With at least one more before AR retires or gets a career ending injury. There really should have been a dynasty built. TT is NOT a good GM period. MM and DC are constantly out coached in big games. What will it take???

I think we go 7-9 at best and finish last in division.
