Packers QB Sean Clifford Has Surprised a Lot of People in Camp This Year
By GilMartin
The Green Bay Packers started training camp with a lot of questions at the quarterback position. But after training camp and two preseason games, some of those questions have been answered. Jordan Love has showed he’s capable of starting while rookie Sean Clifford at least looks ready to be the backup signal caller for the Packers.
When the Pack drafted Clifford, many experts were skeptical the Penn State alum had what it takes to succeed in the NFL. The big issue, according to scouts, was whether Clifford had the arm strength to compete in the pros. While the Packers picked him in the fifth round of this year’s NFL Draft, many scouts thought he would be drafted in the seventh round or be a priority free agent because of his lack of his arm strength.
Through the first two preseason games, Clifford has showed he can get the job done. He may not have a plus arm by NFL standards, but he’s smart, resilient and knows the offense extremely well. He also believes in himself.
It didn’t take long for Clifford to become confident he could compete at the NFL level. “Probably halfway through OTAs, I started to feel like I can make all the throws that are necessary to be in this league,” Clifford said. “And then I would say, probably the second week of this camp, I started to really feel comfortable in and out of the huddle. That’s probably when I was like, ‘OK, now I’m feeling pretty good.’”
In the first preseason game, he got a chance to show what he could do. Clifford completed 20-of-26 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown. He also showed the ability to remain confident after making a mistake. He threw two interceptions in the game including a pick-six that was returned 43 yards for a touchdown.
But he came back and led the Packers to 29 points including a five-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Davis.
He followed that up with another solid performance against the Patriots. In that game, he completed 13-of-19 passes for 137 yards and did not throw an interception.
Combined, Clifford has completed 33-of-45 passes for 345 yards and one touchdown.
After the first two preseason games, head coach Matt LaFleur felt confident enough in Clifford to name him the team’s backup quarterback behind Love.
“I think it’s safe to say Sean is our No. 2 quarterback,” LaFleur said. “A lot of it is just his mental makeup. You saw it in the Cincinnati game in terms of his ability to rebound. The game’s not too big for him.”
The Packers starter is also impressed with the way his rookie backup has played this summer. “He’s picked up the offense really fast,” Love said. “I was just telling him the other day he picked up the offense so much faster than I did my rookie year.”
One thing that has impressed the coaching staff is the way Clifford has handled two-minute drills and clutch situations. He relishes those opportunities to come through with the game on the line.
“As much as you hate to say it, when two-minute [drill] comes around, everyone has an even more intense focus because you’re focusing on the hardest situation in football,” Clifford told reporters. “You’re dealing with time; you’re dealing with how many timeouts you have. Sometimes, defenses bring different looks in two-minute specifically, so remembering that. So, I think it’s an enhanced focus in this offense. Everybody’s so dialed in and always prepared for those opportunities. I think it’s a culmination of a lot of hard work by our offense putting that together.”
Clifford still has a lot to prove. Being successful against second and third string defenses in a preseason game is nice but it’s not the same level as regular season football. Once the games count, the talent on defense is better and the formations and strategies employed are more complex.
But the good news is, Clifford has shown his leadership ability, his resilience, and his football intelligence. That has been enough to win him the backup job for the Green Bay Packers to start the 2023 season and to get his NFL career jump started.

Watching Tom exclusively. Very good, good, okay, good, good, okay, so-so, IIRC.
2nd 10. Okay. 3rd and 10. Okay but quick pass. FG from 43 good.

I'm watching Myers. His man is not getting anything done. Our first drive was entirely on the ground.

That's great. I am better if I focus more. I have seen Myers and Runyan a bit, of course.

Nice punt return by Seattle. It sure is a good thing that we gave them that chance instead of just punting it out of bounds.

Carlson's 57 yard FG would have been good at 62. Not 70.

3rd seroes.
Tom okay, okay. Okay. None of the plays went to his side.
Didn't see, up tempo, good. Okay, okay (came out quick).
Tom was fine on the deep pass. Wide open. Miss.
Okay but up the middle. End quarter.
Prettu good push. TEs could have done more
Gaveup pressure, not a fast pressure, but one nevertheless.

This illustrates what I've said many times. The Packers are moving the ball on the ground and Seattle hasn't stopped the run yet. But the Packers choose to pass anyway.

As regards to Clifford.......he has convinced me. I liked the drat pick, but I never thought the plan was to have a Day 3 rookie be our season backup plan. I still don't like it, but I have to admit that Clifford has done a good job and probably deserved to be the #2 based on what he's shown.

Nice pick up by Tom. First down . Ran left again.
Good on pass to Heath. Got a stalemate in pass pro.
Good on pass to Musgrave.
2 TOs by GB already. Why? Old habits die hard?
These Nicolet commercials don't inspire me to call him.
Okay, quick TD to Watson, left again.
Blocked. Kuhn thinks just great play, not bad STs. Uh huh.

O’Donnell holding. Carlson missed more kicks this TC with O’Donnell holding than Whelan.

The only thing that matters to me-
Is more Packer wins than Loses.
But- I will always praise the guy
that made a difference to that.

It will be interesting
to hear who that guy is-
now that Rodgers isn't here
because you've already
set yourself up to never admit it could be Love
and we all
know that you could never
say that Gutekunst built a winner

The packers had a good draft.
The defensive Line; is what
I've been complaining about, for years.
They No longer will be at the Bottom.
It's too bad, the improvements took long.
But I will always be on the side of the guy
who earned It. Rodgers is gone.
If Love can be as good as #4 or #12.
I will buy his jersey and put it on my wall.
The WHY is. the Question Mark.
But No matter how this turns out.
Gutey made mistakes that costs us more than
one super-bowl. (Per The DL )
And before you crown this team .
This is the year of the Lions.
The Ticket Sales are off the charts.
Oppy

Who cost the Packers the Super Bowls from 2011-2018? Was Gutekunst secretly botching things to ensure Rodgers couldn't attain his rightful crown as yearly SB champion?
WHY what?
Who's ticket sales? And what does ticket sales have to do with anything?

Nijman in at RT. Lot of runs to the left.
Run right soon as I write the above. Meh.
Runyan at center.
Newman at LG, Rhyan at RG. Walker at LT.
Newman holding.
Wilson Competent pass rec. Hands look fine.
Walker whiffed on 4th and one. Over on downs.
Leatherhead
August 26, 2023 at 01:08 pm
The Newman hold kills that possession, but it could have been rescued if Walker gets his man.

Did that attempt on 4th & 1 fail with about 3:00 left in the half fail because of Wilson vs Quadzilla, bad play call, or did they just beat us?
Thegreatreynoldo
August 26, 2023 at 01:26 pm
Walker whiffed on the 4th and one on a run off (left) tackle. Play as drawn up was kind of dead at that point. Maybe Wilson should have bounced outside, I suppose. IDK.

Seattle with 1 yard rushing so far. Here's a trivia question for everybody: How many plays has Seattle run in Lambeau Field without scoring a point.? Remember, they were shut out the last time they came here.

Lol, we're getting gashed by their run, right up the middle. Hopefully you're still focusing on Myers and can tell us about that.
Announcer just said Walker at LT and Nijman at RT. I thought I saw 60 at C but obviously that's wrong, is that Tom?

August 26, 2023 at 01:18 pm
Yes, after we have the third unit in, they got some runs. Prior to that, they had one yard rushing in the middle of t he second quarter.
Myers wasn't on the field. He plays offense.

2nd unit on the DL. They had Brooks lined up on the LGs inside shoulder and he got pushed around twice. Not a good place for him. Helps Ford make the roster I guess.

Clifford has surprised a lot of people everywhere. I was also a bit of a skeptic. But he picked up the offense really quickly and has made some decisive and accurate throws right away in live action. This is the best we could have hoped for in having a rookie securing the backup position in very short order.

August 26, 2023 at 03:19 pm
Agree 100%. Clifford is showing his worst this far in preseason, and the Packers stay in it. Had he not been replaced by McGough, I think he would have led us to another TD.

Tom at center. Run play. Not involved.
Tom Okay on 4 yard run.
2 minute.
Keeper. Good push.
Pass to Heath. Tom competent in pass pro.
Pass to Toure. Tom okay, gave some ground.'
Tom stalemate. Run up middle nada
Deep to not open Heath. Did not see what Tom did.
3rd 10. Inc. Tom looked for work, finally found some. Okay
Pooch punt to the 12. flag seattle now trying a 57 yd FG with teh wind.'
57 yards Goood!

Nice field goal to close out the half. It's kind of hard to believe we only have 12 points when pretty much everything we did on offense worked.
I've seen enough. Time to hang at the pool and drink a margarita. I feel very good about what Ive seen from the Packers this preseason. The first defense is solid, our offensive line is good, and our skill position players are going to move the ball. I think we'll score 30 against Chicago.

I sure hope your correct! My in laws decided that when Rodgers left, the Bears were going to start taking it to the packers. Three good quarterbacks in a row, fantastic!

Pretty good defense. I will check the snap counts when they come out to see if Seattle played their starters. Obviously did not start Geno Smith, but Locke is a decent journeyman QB test.
Offense was meh. Missed Watson for a TD throwing into the wind. Weather guy says winds 22 to 26 in Milwaukee.

August 26, 2023 at 01:46 pm
Stats say all GB. Seattle running at a 4.8 clip. QB Locke has a great passer rating. Just can't get first downs. Too many negative plays for Seattle. 91 total yards to 205 for GB. 15 first downs to 4 for Seattle. 12-9 though.
Clark with tjhe only QB hit. Hollins did nothing with the 1s. Checked and I see two assisted tackles. Van Ness some good and some less than that. Wilson looks okay but stats are brutal.

Brooks with the swat. good penetration.

Rookie QB learning to adjust to NFL and, more contextually, learning a new NFL offense.
He will be late getting the ball out. He will miss reads. He will throw dangerous balls because he doesn't understand all the concepts.
He's looked really good for a young QB all things considered. I expect the ball will be getting out much more quickly in 2024.

I thought Heath and Wilson both did not help their cause, especially early. Came up with some plays before they were done, but seems like a downturn for them. Will be interesting to see how that looks on stat lines, snap counts and such.

It will be fun to follow the development of Clifford. Less Farve gunslinger crap & more in the vein of Starr. Become more mental, a student of the game. Learn from Clements, absorb his experience & knowledge. You got the arm talent, work on between your ears talent.

I don't know about Starr. I go to a more recent vintage for my comparison---Matt Flynn is who Clifford reminds me of. Agree with him becoming a student of the game and absorbing knowledge from Clements.
