Packers Put Franchise Tag On Pickett

Per Adam Schefter:

Green Bay Packers placed their franchise tag on DT Ryan Pickett. The DT franchise tag is $7 million. Pickett not going anywhere.

Of course, this does not preclude a long term deal getting done, as Packer Update pointed out on Twitter (before he deleted it - way to stand behind your opinion!) with Wilfork reportedly close to signing a long term deal with New England, those parameters could help speed along negotiations between Pickett and the team. Is Pickett worth Wilfork money? Debatable, but that deal could be a helpful guideline, if not a blueprint.

UPDATE:

Thompson's statement:

Ryan has been a good teammate and productive player for us on the field and also a good representative of the Packers in the community. We look forward to having him be a part of our future.

Emphasis mine. And I think that's a bigger part here than people may think.

Pickett's a good player, but he's not our best lineman in my opinion. I think placing the tag on Jenkins or even Raji would have made a lot more sense.

PACKERS - they are under contract. The tag is designed to keep Pickett w/the Packers. Jenkins and Raji aren't going anywhere.

Great move!! Didn't want to see Pickett going anywhere.

Now, sign Dunta Robinson, get an outside linebacker, one OT, change of pace back and returner, and SB here we come!!

Aaron, with the Tag placed, we cannot move the tag, right? If we sign Pickett to a long term deal, we cannot place the tag on anyone else, right?

PackersRS - If I remember right, if they sign Pickett long-term, they are free to re-apply the tag to someone else if they choose.

They can't re-apply the tag, can they? Isn't the deadline for tagging players, today?

Deadline for tag is 4pm Thursday - they could conceivably agree to a deal tonight and re-apply it in the morning. Won't happen, but it's possible.

Don't teams get multiple franchise tags with the CBA expiring?

Quien sabe homes lol. TT knows what he is doing, he is a master mind. Its a clue that he wants to focus on defense and will probably get a linebacker since he did this. Hope our draft is like last years full of good players.

if they agree to a long term contract can the pack use the 7 mil he would get as a point and pay him a smaller amount for the rest of the contract?

Yeah Aaron, actually it is simple at this point. Most of the pieces are in place, so it seems.

I hear most players despise the tag because they want huge guaranteed money from a contract. But, IIRC, Pickett was making less than half of the $7mil he'll now get....very nice raise, IMO. And now the precedent of big money for him has been set. He should be very happy and ready to trade in that old 2009 Lexus for a new one.

I guess Kampman's tenure in GB is officially over, then...

Well there have been rumors that the pack are willing to at least make an offer to Kampman so we can't completely rule him out. Only time will tell if he does choose to come back though.

Steelers sign Hampton for 3-year, $21 million ($11 mil guaranteed). Pickett worth more or less?

You making a contrast with Jolly there, Aaron? If so, I agree. I'm comfortable that Pickett will not see any slippage with a big contract...what you see is what you get based on all accounts. I don't think a Cletidus Hunt comparison is necessarily completely fair to Jolly (he does put effort out), but I have to admit it is what crosses my mind. I have a bad feeling about making a commitment to a guy that makes codeine concoctions for fun (allegedly!)
