Packers promote LB Kendall Donnerson to roster, send S Ibraheim Campbell to IR

10 of the Green Bay Packers' 11 draft picks from April are now on the team's 53-man roster.

The Packers announced several moves on Monday, and one of them was promoting seventh-round pick Kendall Donnerson to the active roster. He'll provide the Packers with a fourth body at outside linebacker in the wake of Nick Perry's season being ended last month.

Depending on whether or not he's one of the Packers' 46 active players Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, Donnerson could see the first regular-season action of his career.

To clear up a roster spot for Donnerson, the Packers placed safety Ibraheim Campbell on injured reserve. Campbell was claimed by the Packers off of waivers shortly after the team traded Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to the Washington Redskins.

As an every-down fill-in, Campbell has exceeded expectations in his last two games, demonstrating a fearless ability to crash down and confront ballcarriers head-on. His season reaching its end sticks with the tumultuous theme the Packers have endured at the safety position in 2018.

The Packers also signed two safeties to their practice squad: Tray Matthews and Jason Thompson.

Matthews, an undrafted rookie free agent out of Auburn, was signed by the Minnesota Vikings in May and spent a brief period on the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad.

Thompson is in his second season, coming from the University of Utah. He was initially signed as an undrafted free agent -- much like Matthews -- by the New England Patriots last year. He bounced between the practice squads of the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks.

Thompson has become something of a journeyman, spending short stints with the Dallas Cowboys, Tennesee Titans and Washington Redskins in 2018.

What the hell, might as well get him some playing time. He' s a heavy hitter, you never know.

I thought he should have made the club. I'm happy to see him get a chance.

Agree, raw potential is better than tried and just average at this point. Playing time can only accelerate his learning curve at this point.

Sorry to lose Campbell, he seemed to be an in season signing that actually made us better.

With the uncertainty surrounding Matthews as well as the other pass rushers, it wouldn't hurt to get a look at another one to see what the team has to offer.

Perry has been one of the biggest wastes of time and money ever. Cutting him will still cost the Packers a lot of money. Donnerson can't do any worse and any production will be an improvement.

I think this thrust of this article is backwards. The lead should be that GB just lost the services of a young and promising player at a position of great need. Indeed, a guy I wanted to see play more to help assess the need at safety going forward. I would have liked to have seen Campbell put more play on tape and to see if opposing OCs find a way to exploit him, and how Campbell responded.

Instead, the lead is the promotion of Donnerson. Now, I wanted to see Donnerson get some regular season snaps, but not at Campbell's expense.

I agree. I think it's safe to say, in most cases, a backwards thrust won't get you where you need to go.

Has there been any word on the nature of Campbell's injury? Does putting him on the ir help us in any way for keeping him around next year?
