Packers promote DL Tyler Lancaster to the active roster, release RB Darius Jackson

-- The Green Bay Packers added a fifth defensive lineman to their active roster ahead of Sunday's meeting with the Detroit Lions.

The team announced on Saturday that they promoted Tyler Lancaster from the practice squad and released running back Darius Jackson as the corresponding move.

The Packers signed Lancaster out of Northwestern as a part of their undrafted free agent haul back in May. He was released as a part of final roster cut-downs in September but was added to the practice squad the following day.

Ever since Muhammad Wilkerson suffered a season-ending ankle injury against the Washington Redskins two weeks ago, the Packers have had workouts with a few defensive linemen and even tried re-adding Brian Price to their roster from the Cleveland Browns' practice squad, however, the Browns upped Price's salary to keep him in town.

Jackson, a former sixth-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2016, has been somewhat of a journeyman since being drafted. He was claimed off of waivers by the Browns later that season and, after spending all of his second year on injured reserve, was released by the team in May of this year.

Jackson had a second stint with the Cowboys that eventually landed him on their practice squad, which is where the Packers poached him from after releasing running back Devante Mays, their seventh-round pick from a year ago.

The Packers also had Aaron Jones suspended for the first two games of the regular season, so keeping Jackson on the roster offered another body to practice with and potential reassurance in the event of injury.

They need another rotational DL and they need to do something so Clark isn't gassed by week 12. Maybe those two things come together here. The fact that they went after Price maybe was a prelude to this move and an indication of what Gute was thinking.

Starting to wonder if Montravious Adams is ever going to get himself on the field...

I agree. Was hoping this would be a breakout year for M. Adams, but it's starting to look like he's going to be another disappointing draft pick by Thompson.

Lancaster looked good in the pre-season, I believe he played with Lowery at Northwestern.
Tough, scrappy midwestern guy, good run plugger.

If Tyler Lancaster can play as well as Burt Lancaster can act, maybe we might have something.

You know what would be nice? If Gute found us another pass rusher?

Dante. Fowler. The Jags aren't using him and don't have the salary cap to sign him next year. It would automatically be a great deal for us for a mid-round pick. Wonderful rental.

That would make too much sense. Word around 1265 is Kyler Fackrell is the second coming of Ted Hendricks.

Lancaster is the missing piece of the puzzle for our Gang Green D. Kid's got Joe Callahan-like grit. Murph is already cutting a licensing deal to bring Gang Green merch exclusively to Shopko stores. There are rumors of a limited edition Tyler & Kyler 36 oz Miller Lite can (will sell for $14.50); soft rollout will be via a statewide bus tour with guests Angelo Fields, Rich Moore, and Gilbert Brown. This is gonna be big!

I looked at Fowler due to the PFF article. Fowler would be an 11-game rental with a cap hit of $2.5M or so. PFF suggests shipping a 4th rounder for Fowler, the 3rd pick in the 2015 draft, who has 62 snaps this season. Jax has already declined his 5th year option. Bigcatcountry described Fowler as a niche player for Jax.

He missed 2015 (ACL), had 4 and then 8 sacks in 2016 and 2017 (in 570 and 466 snaps), and is getting about 21 snaps per game this year (he missed game one). I assume the talent is immense, but the results are underwhelming. He can rush the passer: 12 sacks in 1036 snaps and 22 QB hits attests to that. Quote from bigcatcountry for week 2:

"He [Fowler] was the highest graded edge defender in Week 2 with a PFF defense grade of 94.9. He recorded five total pressures on just 14 pass rush snaps, and ranked first with a pass-rush productivity of 21.4."

Here is a link to Fowler's 2017 highlights. I see speed on the outside with some bend and an inside move. Some bull too. Don't see any run D in the clip. Yeah, I'd ship the 4th for Fowler despite some off the field issues in the past.

Exactly. And if he plays well? We'd get the first shot at signing him without losing comp picks. And how much easier would already having a OLB1 make approaching the draft? We need an OT, S (probably), developmental TE, DT. OG....

Everyone thought we were fine before the draft on the DL. You never, ever, have enough big men. Especially if they have a can't miss rating. TT failed to realize this when drafting. You had the best DL in years coming out. He took Clark. Perfect A plus! But his mistake was not taking Billings or trading up for Jones. He took Spriggs. Also failing to understand Bahk was the man. IF A GUY IS GOOD ENOUGH; YOU HAVE TO PAY HIM. Don't low ball them. So now were facing Mathews and Dix leaving. If their good enough, shouldn't Gute pay them like Bahk? I hope Gute makes the right call. Will this years draft give you the best at those positions? Or do they scream cap? If you don't have depth to push the starters, they only regress. The packers will never get their $$$$$ worth.
