Packers Prepare for a Familiar foe in DeMarco Murray, now Thriving in Titans' Ground game

The Packers have prepped through the duration of the past week for their third encounter with the Titans in the last eight years.

While the coaching and training staff aim to gradually work the roster back to full health with several key players returning to practice today, the opposition is dealing with their own injury problems.

Running back DeMarco Murray didn't practice Wednesday with a foot injury and his reinforcement in Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry was held out as well with a calf impairment. So far, good news for a defensive line that currently ranks first in the league in rush defense. The Packers' front seven has allowed an average of 75.8 yards per game through the first half of the season. Despite another rookie rushing threat in Ezekiel Elliott stomping his reckless path all over the defense, Green Bay's average is still well below the 107.0 league average.

These upcoming days will be vital in knowing whether or not Murray and Henry will be at Tennessee head coach Mike Mularkey's disposal on Sunday. The Titans will practice on Friday and by tomorrow evening, more details  of availability will emerge.

Murray, who has made a name for himself against the Packers in recent years by posting up an average of 128.5 yards in his two games against Green Bay, poses the most intimidating threat of the duo. The Packers will also have to account for second-year quarterback Marcus Mariota, who currently ranks second amongst active quarterbacks in rushing yards with 235. A number that looms noticeably over Henry's 221, however, Henry may just pose as the more dynamic threat of the two. (The Packers have handled mobile quarterbacks well this year, despite Andrew Luck and Dak Prescott being the only two real elusive ones they've faced. Prescott didn't have to run the ball very much, as the Cowboys' passing attack was in full swing, but when he did, a measly six yards was the result. As for Luck, his seven attempts weren't enough to get things going in the Packers' recent loss, only amounting 15 yards.)

Henry didn't see many targets in the passing game at Alabama, especially not when he was being handed the ball 395 times in just his junior year alone. When he was a formidable receiving threat, he made the most of his 11 receptions as a junior and put up 91. Even better yet, as a sophomore, managed 133 yards on just five catches, averaging 26.6 yards per each.

The most productive Alabama running back since the Packers' own Eddie Lacy was produced from the school is coming off a game where he recorded his highest catch total of the season. A diminutive four receptions on five targets. It was also in this game against the Jaguars that he saw a workload of 16 carries, also his highest on the year. If Murray and Henry can suit up for Sunday, the Packers will have a three-headed rushing attack to do their best to contain.

In 2016, the Packers' worst results in halting the opponent's run game has come from the left end where they've allowed an average of 4.67 yards per carry - their highest mean of all possible run directions. A worrisome stat when the Titans' most run production comes off of that lane. Hitting the hole at the left end of the offensive line has netted the Titans' offense 281 rushing yards this season, 7.39 yards per carry. If they do their homework right, they just might be targeting this weak side of the Packers' defensive line.

Green Bay's front seven will likely be without Clay Matthews, who has been a non-participant in practice all week. As a result, the odds are slim that his no. 52 will be sported come Sunday.

What the hell is up with Matthews? What a waste of money he has become.

Huge waste. All these non contact injuries. Ridiculous.

It's reassuring that, despite the Packer laundry list on IR, only Matthews and Tretter were DNPs yesterday. Randall is not expected to play, but at least he's starting to participate.

OTOH, Tennessee has virtually nobody on IR and is practicing virtually everyone. A team that nothing was really expected of this season is playing good enough football to still be in the conversation for a WC. They're the antithesis of the Packers at this point.

Most of know about Murray, Henry, and Mariotta. That is a nice tidbit about the Titan's success running left and our difficulties defending that area. This left me wanting to know more.

Like Shields, maybe Matthews is someone we should not ever expect to play a full season.

Sad as it is, between the lack of availability and the average production, he's just not worth the money his early play warranted and the Packers banked on when they signed him to his second deal.

Much like Hawk, the Packers need to renegotiate his deal or trade him for a pick and move on. Most of what fans are banking on with him is a player who for the most part is a shadow of his former self, production-wise, but a huge drain on the cap.

It would suck seeing him gone, not so much for the loss of what is, but for the loss of what fans had hoped might be.

He does make things happen when he's on the field. The bottom line is that the Packers have no one like him to take his place. The top of the 2017 draft is starting to look very complex for this team as it's looking like they need a quality size/speed WR, an edge rusher, and a good cover CB. Those are primarily first-round (or maybe second round) players.

Someone else noted it before, but CMIII played the last two seasons in full when he was primarily at ILB. It appears that he just can't hold up on the outside, and his achilles heel has always been hammy injuries.

I see NE traded Jamie Collins to Cleveland, from what I read it was a salary issue even though he is rated as one of the top LB 's in the league and looked like it last night, although far fetched would have been great to land a player like that and what a deal Cleveland got him for.

The TItans have some choices. Do we match strength against strength and try to beat the Packers on the ground? Or, do we take advantage of the Packers weak secondary and emphasize Mariotta?

In the first case, if they choose a run-bias, this game will be like the Dallas game in so far that it will prove how the Packers run D responds to an upper-echelon running back.

In the second, if they choose to air it out, the Packers need to take come chances and bank on Mariotta's inexperience giving them turnover opportunities.

Win the LOS and stop the run. Need to get pressure with a disciplined rush to keep Mariota in the pocket and force him to win the game with his below average corps of WR. Walker is the wildcard at TE.

If the Titans RBs play, they will go with their breadn' butter ground game. That's their strength. Mariota is a better running than passing QB as well. Packers need to commit to stopping the running game. If not it's the Dallas game all over again. If the Packers can open up a two score lead then maybe we can force them to abandon the run and force some turnovers. MM needs to develop a game plan that keeps the Titans O off the field and DC needs a plan to stop the run and force Mariota to pass. Even with our depleted secondary I don't think that Mariota can beat us with his arm. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Let's see if Daniels is all talk or if he can walk the walk he was invisible against the Colts but he was not alone so was Perry, Jones and Peppers , let's see this angry defense that Daniels was talking about.
