Packers place Geronimo Allison on IR, release Jermaine Whitehead

The Packers continue to massage a roster suddenly dealing with the injury bug.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst announced several moves on Tuesday afternoon, one of which was somewhat expected and another that will undoubtedly raise a few eyebrows.

Wide receiver Geronimo Allison has been placed on injured reserve, a day after head coach Mike McCarthy indicated that the third year veteran would most likely need surgery after a visit to core injury specialist Dr. William Meyer in Philadelphia.

The Packers also released safety Jermaine Whitehead, two days after he was ejected from the team's game against the Patriots for throwing a punch. While it's unlikely he was released strictly because of that infraction, it most likely didn't help a player whose play has been somewhat inconsistent throughout the 2018 season.

A day after adding saefty Ibraheim Campbell via waivers, the Packers continued to augment their defensive backfield by promoting cornerback Will Redmond from the practice squad to the 53 man roster.

Redmond, a 5-foot-11, 186-pound third-year player, was signed to the Packers’ practice squad on Sept. 11. He was originally selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round (No. 68 overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State. Redmond spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve with a knee injury and the first eight games of 2017 with an ankle injury. He was released by the 49ers on Oct. 31, 2017, and signed by the Kansas City Chiefs to the practice squad on Nov. 9, 2017, where he spent the rest of the season. Redmond was released by the Chiefs on Sept. 1.

I get the discipline issue and sending messages to the locker room. I would imagine Whitehead had other behind the scenes incidents to justify release.

However, we are getting very thin at safety and I thought Whitehead was playing ok at the hybrid position as our options were limited. Is Brice still hurt?

I am shocked at this. Player who was contributing has a questionable at best ejection and is released.

I am all in favor of asserting discipline, but this seems an overreaction to me. Sorry Gute. Absent a significant aggravating factor as yet unknown this is one move I am not in agreement with.

Too bad Gute can’t do anything about bad coaching.

I would like to know why Traemon Williams was following the uncaught punt on the ground in the 3rd quarter. Wouldn’t you think some millionaire coach would have told him nothing good is going to happen if that ball happens to bounce back and off his back, leg , head or hand.

Gute would probably have to cut him. Madden, Belichek and other good coaches tell their players to get your ass away from a received punt on the ground. Some of our coaches are incompetent and young players and fans suffer because of it.

To me it’s obvious Gute will consider any moves to improve any area of the Packers. It’s beyond tinkering at the edges. It will be interesting to see how much interest he has for Irvin. Were it up to me, Irvin would be in GB tomorrow.

Couldn't agree more. While the ejection may have been a bit stiff for the infraction, it was clearly a stupid penalty by Whitehead. Gute's message is clear - undisciplined play will not be tolerated. Long overdue.

Why do we keep bringing in new players and overpaying old(Rodgers) players? Rodgers was locked in for four more years(2 year’s on contract 2 as franchise player). Now instead we have the highest paid player in the league sucking huge cap money AND he is unhappy with our incompetent coaches.

We have unused free agents, players making fundamental mistakes every game and a clueless coach. I am happy Gute did not cut Jones after the fumble??

Gute made a huge mistake taking the GM job with no control of the coaching staff. Who is busy fixing that mess of incompetence?

I hope it was for lack of ability rather than a heavy-handed penalty. Thought I just read an article calling Whitehead a smart player who was mastering Pettine's defense.

Looks like a first rounder will be devoted to safety.

Agreed.

If he has cut him for the penalty he is an idiot who has been given too much power. On the face of it, he has cut a guy who is a reasonable contributer for a guy who probably isnt. It looks like he takes a hissy fit when things go wrong.

Like I said if he has cut him as he doesn't rate the player then fine dont have a problem with that.

Well, since the GB pick will be on a pass rusher, that would mean two first round defensive picks. That defense better be top notch next year

Pass rushing OLB is the obvious top priority. We absolutely have to get a good one with our first pick. I'd prefer an OT with the 2nd first rounder, if it's not a reach. Safety can hopefully be filled via free agency as can an upgrade at OG. I'm thinking Josh Jackson could be an outstanding safety. It'll be interesting to see if they make that move, something they should have done with Micah Hyde.

I must admit, watching CFB this year i haven't seen many "EDGE" classified players jumping out at me thus far.

Between now and the bowl games (inclusive) will be interesting to see who takes control of the big games.

With so many position groups in need of a rebuild I wouldn't be surprised to see BPA for the first 3 rounds.

The Packers seem to be getting some traction with drafting multiple players at the one position too (in terms of acquiring "keepers").

Gute thinks he is playing madden, cutting players every 5 minutes when he is bored.

Seriously I hope its because he doesn't rate the guy, you cant keep cutting players every time they make a mistake or everyone will be scared to do anything. Not exactly great for team morale either.

Or maybe he is stealth tanking for a better pick.

Dobber, based on his performance prior to the ejection and that of others after, Whitehead. This move made the team worse. Maybe not dramatically but nevertheless detrimentally.

GB waived Whitehead (surprisingly enough), put Allison on the IR, and promoted DB Will Redmond to the 53.

All of this has little effect on the cap. Waiving Whitehead might save $35K and change. Putting Allison on IR probably costs $226K roughly.

Bruce Irvin passed through waivers and is now an unrestricted free agent. Nobody wanted to pay him $3.7M for the rest of the 2018 season. I wrote that Irvin would not be claimed since few GMs are dumb enough or desperate enough to pay that much for Irvin.

If everyone seems to think the season is lost, anyway, why not give him an 8-game test-drive and find out? Who would he be keeping off the field that needs the developmental snaps? (Hint: the answer is "nobody")

If they like what he brings, they have the inside track to an extension/resign. If not, they let him walk away...

Way to go Gute! Keep chucking the chooches. Whitehead was not even a JAG. 3-4-1 with him and 3-4-1 without him. Keep trying to find better players because we need them.

I wish we could chuck Perry as well but the cap consequences are too severe. I hope Gute can chuck the rest of the dead wood during this off season. We can't win with the current roster. Go Gute go! Thanks, Since '61

That's just one of many slang misuses for the word. It's derived from the Italian word ciuccio, which is actually a pacifier. Expand that to the idea of a "sucker." In my lifetime, chooch has always meant a feeble-minded person, one who is easily taken advantage of. Example: "Here I am doing all the hard work like a chooch." Second most common use is to call someone a moron. "that guy is such a chooch - he'll believe anything you tell him."

Al - you are probably correct. It is a misuse of the original meaning. Much depends on the multiple dialects of the Italian language and then of course there are slangs of the dialects. When I grew up there were some words which even had different interpretations depending on where you were from in the Bronx.

It often depended on who was telling you what the particular word meant. In my case my Italian grandfather probably provided me with a more polite definition of the word since I was pretty young at the time and I never really questioned it.

In any case chuck the chooches! Thanks, Since '61

Chooch is an Italian slang for donkey. Where I grew up in the Bronx if you did something stupid you were a chooch. Since it was mostly an Italian neighborhood someone was always a chooch. In any case I'm fine with Gute chucking players who make stupid plays, especially when they are marginal players. Thanks, Since '61

I'm pretty sure most here would agree that the offense has been a major issue. If the offense could score more it would help tremendously with momentum, field position, and time of possession. First and foremost the line has got to play better in pass protection for the offense to have any chance at even slight improvement. With that being said if the line can gel and protect better they are going to need imho 5 key players to step up and finish in the top 10 among players at their position.
1. Devante Adams,
2. Jimmy Graham,
3. Aaron Jones,
4. MVS,
5. Aaron Rodgers,
Adams and Graham on already on pace and need to continue on an upward trajectory and their numbers will improve with the offense. Jones and MVS have done quite well in the limited time they've been given and also should see a big uptick in opportunities and production. And AR is going to need to be the catalyst by improving upon his play. If these things happen the Packers offense should be good enough to win 7 of 8 as long as injuries don't destroy them first.

I find it curious that people seem to forget that just before the bye we were lamenting that Whitehead was getting as many snaps as he was. He was cut for a true S with Brice nursing a knee injury....cutting a surplus player for a player at a position of need. The bottom line: clearly they viewed Whitehead as being somewhere near the bottom of the roster.
