Packers place Equanimeous St. Brown on injured reserve

The Packers announced their initial 53 man roster earlier this afternoon. One of the noteworthy items in the team's offiicial releae is that they have placed second year wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown on injured reserve.

This is noteworthy because  St. Brown was not on the initial 53 man roster, which means being placed on injrued reserve ends his season. He is not eligible to be brought back later in the year.

It had been reported that EQ had suffered a high ankle sprain during last Thursday nights preseason game against the Raiders. Perhaps the injury is a bit more serious than previously thought.

Here's a thought... The Packers actually could use a speedy veteran. Jaron Brown was cut by Seattle so they could afford the trade with Clowney... What do you guys think of signing Jaron Brown if the price was right?

He signed a 2 year $5.5 million contract in March. The cap hit this year was $975,000.00. I have no idea what is left if any for next year and it really doesn't matter but that's not my point. He's a VETERAN who was actually pretty good in Baltimore last season, and if you remember pretty good for the Cardinals. He and Byron Hoyer might be smart additions to this offense.

Wow! I just read where the Saints took Vince Biegel and actually traded him for an ILB of all things, lol. They actually traded him to Miami for Kiko Alonso who has started 46 of 48 games in the past 3 years. How the hell the Saints pulled that off is beyond me. Is it possible Biegel showed some promise in preseason? Struggling to rap my head around how they got a starter quality ILB for a 4th round pick that was cut and has no NFL resume to speak of.

Bet he is really in a bad place tonight knowing he has to sit out a whole year due to a high ankle sprain. Yikes! You train and workout all year and then you sprain an ankle. Gotta be hard to get motivated for a whole year to try all over again.

High ankle sprains are never good though. Usually mean a protracted time off because of risk of reoccurrence and delay between fitness and full utility.

For a season and a half, Adams couldn't catch the ball, either. His sprain had little to do with his catching abilities. His head did, however. Glad he got that straightened out.

That is true, but they certainly don't need to be a career ender. He can spend an entire year now doing physical therapy, hitting the weights, studying film, etc., and there's no reason he couldn't be a part of our WR for years to come.

It's unfortunate, but I'm sure he'll handle the whole setback with equanimity.

Still don't know how much muscle, nerve damage etc. ESB took on the play. It is usually up to the player as this is a long term medical issue. It's crap like this, is why I hate the Davis family. Like father, like son.

Good. They keep the rights to EQ and don't expose someone else to waivers (to keep EQ on the 53 and then IR him).

That’s the normal route, but this type of injury is well known for prolonged return timescales and downgraded performance. They may have just decided he would be better served to come back next season when other spots (Allison) may open and that they had adequate depth this year. We will see.

Same approach they took with Kumerow last year. It sucks for Eq, but it's a business and the organization has to do what's best for itself within the rules of the league.

Kumerow was on the roster in the 53 then moved to in-season IR.

EQ was in the roster before the 53 was set.

Kumerow was therefore able to be brought back from IR. EQ can not be.

So really I would say significantly different handling of the two. I would guess that the reasons are likely depth this year and the nature of the injury.

I hit on everybody but Redmond. I had Wilkens to the 53. Thought the idea of EQ out ten weeks or longer was too steep a price to pay for a spot on the defense. Shepherd deserved his spot and is good insurance in the event Davis gets injured, fortifying the return game.

Shepherd covers Davis on returns and provides options In the slot no one else does as well as additional coverage. I’m glad he made it. Quite an achievement.

Redmond played really well on Thursday and has the ability to read the field and be in the right area. That’s a great plus for a safety (one might argue essential for a deep one). He also tackled well at key moments and even played some SS. He earned his spot in my view. He was a ball hawk in college before injuries, so he has skills. He has been my sleeper pick since game 1.

My two big disappointments not tied to current injuries are that Markus Jones was cut. I see him as being necessary to make up numbers but also as having genuine upside. Has made plays since he arrived mid camp.

The other disappointment is that they wasted time on Carson (cut after by far his best game which speaks volumes) and largely ignored Ford, who is a much better athlete. It’s speculative, but I would have felt better with him having a shot at RB3 and keeping Williams at RB 4 if that is what it took at least until Williams can handle basic protection ( which I think could be a while).

Bolton was waived injured. If no one claims him he would go to GB's IR.
I also read Packers can wait til he get better than resign him although I'm not sure how that works if he reverts back to IR. I'm kinda scratching my head trying to figure out Bolton's situation.

If he reverts, they will negotiate an injury settlement. Once that is reached, any team can sign him except the Packers for a period of three weeks. After three weeks, the Packers can resign him to the roster or to the PS.

If they believe that an undersized rookie FA is nit likely to be sought after and thus available after the three weeks, this could actually have him back in a month IF he is healthy. IR would be longer.

Since we don’t know his medical prognosis we can’t know if this was the thinking, but it is the only explanation I can see for waiving a player they were excited about as a starter a handful of days ago.

If he is released on an injury settlement, G. would be restricted from resigning him for the length of the settlement + 3 weeks, but he would be a free agent free to sign with any other team.

If they can't reach an injury settlement he goes on IR, he cannot be released until he passes a physical, and GB is prohibited from activating him this year since he was never part of the final 53.

Agree with Matt G. If Bolton passes through waivers, he reverts to IR, and GB then has choices. Injury settlement or if they can't reach an agreement GB can just wait for him to be able to pass a physical.

Since he was waived injured, he was never released. Bolton is a Packer unless a claim is made. If not claimed, his contract is still in effect. Note that OTC lists his cap hit at $380K, which is the $378K minimum for a split contract plus one third of his $7K signing bonus, or $2,333. OTC is still prorating his signing bonus because his contract is still in force.

My understanding is that Bolton would simply be on the IR, and GB would retain control over him for 2020 and 2021 per his contract (if he goes unclaimed). Bolton then could return in 2020 to compete for Burks' job or to be the backup to Burks. I am not sure if Bolton earns a credited season if he is on IR for 2 games or if he earns an accrued season if he's on it for 6 games. He has to be on "full pay status" whereas he is on the split contract minimum. I'd have to quick check the CBA, but my phone doesn't like the 300 page PDF.

Personally, I think GB should just leave Bolton on the IR all year and retain control and take the cap hit because I think he has potential. Does GB like Bolton $22K per week? If they gave him a 4 week injury settlement, GB would save $289K on the cap. GB could re-sign him after 7 weeks, but he might be on some other team's 53 or PS.

Coldworld's picture

It all depends on the injury. If his return is relatively short term then the settlement approach is a way to get him back sooner if he is not grabbed by another team.

If the injury is near or truly season long then leaving g him on IR would make sense to retain his rights. That said, no need to waive him injured. Like EQ, just put him on IR if that is the plan. That’s why the full year theory doesn’t ring true for me.

It is possible that they just don’t know. Bolton has said that further tests are required to narrow the prognosis. The adopted approach has some risk of loss but keeps options open without having to expose another player to waivers and allows a return to the PS or 53 at any time after 3 weeks from settlement.

Yes, that all makes sense, Coldworld. And it may be that they just don't know exactly the extent of Bolton's injury, or perhaps Burks' as well. GB does only get 5 days to reach an injury settlement, though.

So I'd like to amend my comment by incorporating by reference to your comment.

Did all who guessed the final 53 have Fadol Brown making it? Good for you if you did - and I'm happy for him. My only prediction was Gutekunst would pick up someone (or two) off of the waiver wire to play ILB and maybe RB. Obviously wrong... so far anyway.

I was also happy to see Kizer & J'Mon cut. Nothing against either or them of course, but for the longest time the Packers would keep draftees over UDFAs who did more to earn the spot. The trade capital spent on Kizer and the draft capital spent on J'Mon is gone: Glad to see they realized that and not let it interfere with their roster decisions.

I loved Brown as a find last year and he was one I wanted to watch in camp. He lasted a day or so I think and looked great., but I thought his chance was gone like Donnerson’s.

Apparently they must have really liked him. I think he is one too many at the position, but I’m surprised and happy that it’s him if they are going to have that many.

I find it interesting that the Packers preferred position still is DB, as it was last year. I think we should be careful with what formation the Packers come out in. While it may look like a 4-3, with the skill set, this defense will certainly not play like it. I'm beginning to believe that what defensive formation "the Mad Doctor" uses will be nothing more than a shell to hide his scheme and system and what rules his players play under. We saw hints of that last year, before injuries tore that all apart. Packers defense could look like Wisconsin's, with all those mad skill athletes at DL and LB. (Bucky plays a hybrid 3-4 which swings to a 5-2 or even a 1-5. It's a true high risk match up D focusing on the LOS plus 7 either way. The Packers look to shift that concept to the secondary with how the NFL has changed their pass rules. If true, then the need for longer leaner players who can swing from OLB to DE and Hybrid/DB who can play the run and cover the LOS plus 7 is no 1 and 1a in the Packers needs.) We will see next Thursday. Bear week Baby!!!!!!

It was a toss up between brown and Olive Sagapolu...I picked Olive because he got pressure and got his hand on a ball or 2 with tips. At least that what I remember seeing. I also thought they would keep an extra DL and let a safety go...because it’s deep talent at Safety, but special teams probably played a role in that. And I thought they might role with 3 QBs...Kizer leaving but Boyle and Wilkins staying. I don’t know if they plan on stashing Wilkins or not on the PS. Nice that they cut ties with Moore.... TED would have hung on to him for 3 yrs with zero production...

I honestly thought they would go cheap...cut Crosby and sign Ficken, they decided on the vet...he’s hot and cold so IDK if that’s a good thing or not. Oh, and I thought Markus Jones would make it...he had a nice game But they like Crawford. Summers wasn’t a surprise, he kept improving, made plays. Glad they found room for Sullivan and Shepherd.

Competition brings out the best in everyone. For a lot of those players that were cut many will never suit up again. However, the memories and friendships they made will last a lifetime. How many of us can say they were on a NFL roster? They have a lot to be proud of and those experiences will benefit them in future endeavors.

Happy to see Gute is willing to cut ties with "his players" (Moore and KIzer) if they do not work out. I suspect the previous regime would have hung on longer to the detriment of the team.

I believe Campbell will displace either Redmond or Sullivan when he comes off the PUP list. I also hope the Packers get Bolton back either on the PS or 53 when he heals.

I agree, If he comes off, he won’t have practiced for a year. It will take a while to get him ready to play. A lot can happen in that time.

I’m more intrigued by Roberts. He had core surgery and they have kept him on PUP. They must really like him I guess. Perhaps he is getting a redshirt year. I wonder if they knew that this was likely and that factored into the unusually high UDFA bonus for GB.

Good to see that Kizer is chucked. Crosby over Ficken is the smart move. Beyond that there really aren’t any surprises so far. Still need to get through waivers etc. before the 53 and the PS are finalized.
