Packers Periscope: Week 2 vs Minnesota Vikings

Taking a look at Sunday's matchup between the Packers and the Vikings.

Will it be the Packers or Vikings that find success through the air first during their week two matchup?

Last Sunday, Minnesota ran through Atlanta’s defense for 172 rushing yards and three touchdowns. That meant their franchise quarterback Kirk Cousins only had to throw the ball 10 times. 2018 was Cousins’ first season in the NFC North and he tied Green Bay early on and then defeated them later in the year. In those two games, he managed to have a field day on the Packers, throwing for 767 yards and seven touchdowns.

According to Green Bay’s veteran defensive back, Tramon Williams, the team wanted to force Mitch Trubisky to “play quarterback” in their week one contest in Chicago. Will the Packers defense want to do that against Cousins given his recent success against them? Then again, forcing Minnesota to run the ball means running back Dalvin Cook could have himself another big day like he did against the Falcons.

Mike Pettine’s defense is walking tall though after a dominating performance featuring their new additions. The Packers new pair of outside linebackers Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith combined for eight tackles, 2.5 sacks, and six QB hits. In the secondary, rookie Darnell Savage had himself a nice debut with some explosive plays on the ball. His partner in crime Adrian Amos then sealed the game with his interception in the end zone.

“We got a defense,” said a grinning Aaron Rodgers after the game.

Yes, they do, and the team probably hopes it will be good enough to shoulder the load for the first month of the season. That should be enough time for Matt LaFleur to get his offense churning.

Sure, they did not look good against season opener but the Bears have one of the best defenses in the league. Rodgers did have a huge pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling that led the Packers to the game's only touchdown. If that never happened, then we would of have had a completely different storyline coming out of week one, but it did. Yes, Green Bay’s offense finished with 213 yards but a win is a win even when it isn’t pretty.

Postgame, Rodgers promised his coach he would play better, however, it will be more difficult than just turning on a switch. At points, the offense was dysfunctional and there were times when you even questioned if they would get the snap off. Sound familiar?

Minnesota does not have Chicago’s defense but they aren’t a bunch of slouches either. The Vikings picked off Matt Ryan twice and limited Julio Jones to 31 yards on six catches.

If Green Bay wants to come away with a win on Sunday they may rely heavily on the run game. Something they failed to do last Thursday. Aaron Jones is a breakout candidate this year but he was held to 39 yards on 13 carries against the Bears. This Sunday, the team will need more from Jones and the rest of the offense.

At this point early in the season, the Packers offense will probably take progress even in small doses.

I anticipate a move towards the mean.

Minnesota rushes for less than 172. They throw more than 10 passes. Their opponent doesn’t gift them four turnovers.

Packers score more than 10. They give up more than 3.

No more field days for Mr. Cousins. Those days where the opposing quarterback has their best performance of the season against us are over.

Agree completely... GB's "D" last season gave Cousins his gaudy numbers. -- The "D" in 2019 is a completely different animal. -- More size, speed & better options. --- Cousins will be licking his wounds after the game & looking at his 1-1 record.

Rodgers must have better protection that will be the key to victory, on the other side I think Cousins is going to see a lot of pressure unlike he has seen from a Packers defense.

Over the last four years, Cousins has been a top tier QB along with Brees, Ryan, Rodgers, Brady, Wilson....

Wins, passer rating, TD passes.....Cousins is probably one of the better QBs we’ll face this season.

Coldworld, these are facts, but don't take my word for it, do the research yourself.

Go to www.pro-football-reference. Go to Player Season finder. Enter in the search parameters of 2015-2018 (last four years). Enter "rank by passer rating" or "TD passes" or "completions" or whatever.

You will see the same six or seven guys at the top of every ranking: Brees, Brady, Ryan, Rodgers, Cousins, Wilson, Rivers.

On a direct comparison with Aaron Rodgers, Rodgers has one more TD pass over the last four years. Rodgers has won 6 fewer games than Cousins. Rodgers QB rating over this time is 98.2; Cousins is 98.1. Cousins has completed more passes, and has a higher completion percentage.

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/psl_finder.cgi?request...

IOW....over the last four years, not only has Cousins been one of the top tier QBs (fact, not opinion), his metrics are pretty similar to Rodgers in quite a few ways.

Cousins is a good QB. But again, look it up for yourself....don't just take my word for it.

Cousins is probably top third to maybe top 10. He is a good QB. His TD% rate is 17th between 2015 to 2018. In today's NFL, TD passing is the driving force behind offenses. AR is 6th, which includes two QBs with less than 500 attempts in Mahomes and Watson (true for Cousins as well). It also includes two of AR's worst years, 2015 and 2018. In 2015, AR had no real WR with Nelson out, Cobb and Adams hurt and with butterfingers. James Jones was washed up. In 2018, AR had Adams and a bunch of #3/#4 WRs.

AR is fifth in differential between TD% and INT% between 2015 and 2018. He has a very good 4.08 points in differential, despite an abysmal 2018 and the subpar 2015 year. Cousins has a 2.8 percentage point differential, good for about 15th over that time frame.

Supporting offensive personnel is always an issue.

2015: Jackson, Garcon, Crowder, J Reed. 10th pts.
2016: Desean Jackson, P Garcon, Crowder. 12th pts.
2017: Crowder, V Davis, Grant, Doctson, 16th pts.
2018: Thielen, Diggs, Rudolph. 19th pts.

Cousins didn't have bad O-lines in Washington, but they were not good ones, either. He certainly had a bad O-line in MN last year. It is hard to separate QB quality from WR/TE/RB and OL quality in support. 10th, 12th, 16th and 19th in points isn't enough. GB was 1st, 5th, 8th (injured a half-season), and 1st from 2011 to 2014, and 15th, 4th, 5th (through 5 full games), and 14th in points scored from 2015 to 2018. What's clear to me is when AR has a reasonably good WR corps and OL, he puts up elite points. AR's TD percentage was 6.6 and 6.7 percent in 2016 and 2017, which are excellent numbers. His 4.9% and 4.2% in 2015 and 2018 are subpar for him, and would rank 15th and 26th between 2015 and 2018. 25 TD passes ain't gonna cut it in today's NFL, though.

I'd put Cousins a full tier below AR, myself, and I've been known to "nitpick" AR.

Cousins sucked last year. If he was elite, Washington would have kept him. He’s middle tier IMO. He’s certainly not as good as Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Watson, Jackson, Mahomes, Ryan, Wilson, Brady, Ben, and even Foles. He’s competent but hasn’t done anything in the playoffs and is vastly overpaid IMO.

Sucked? A higher passer rating, a higher completion percentage, more TDs, and more wins than Rodgers. But somehow, Rodgers is a top QB and the guy who had a better season sucks. OK. I'm sure that makes sense somehow, but I don't see it.

One more time: Over the last four years, Cousins has been a very good QB, one of the better ones in the league. He compares very similarly to our own Aaron Rodgers.

Cousins numbers are good but we should keep in mind that Rodgers has missed 11 games during the last 2 seasons. That is probably why Rodgers has won fewer games than Cousins. I'm not sure but I don't think that Cousins has missed any games. That would explain why Cousins in close in wins and TD passes.

I also noticed that you managed to leave out that Cousins has thrown 46 interceptions during 2015 - 2018 and Rodgers has only thrown 23 over the same 4 year period. Rodgers TD/Int. ratio is nearly 5 to 1 while Cousin's is 2.4 to 1 during the same 4 seasons. Again this is with Rodgers missing 10 games in 2017 and one game in 2018. I don't mind comparing QBs but at least be fair about it rather than picking and choosing stats to attempt to make one player look good (Cousins) and another look bad (Rodgers). Use the facts fairly not selectively. Thanks, Since '61

Since 61.....I’m kind of under the impression that we all know Rodgers is very careful with the ball. Is it really necessary to include that in every post?

He has missed games and Cousins hasn’t....that somehow diminishes Cousins?

No it doesn’t diminish Cousins but it would be more accurate to state that Cousins has 6 more wins but has played 48 games while Rodgers has played in 37 games over the same 4 seasons.

Also the number of picks and TD/Int ratios are legitimate factors in any comparison. Yes, we know Rodgers is careful with the football, while Cousins averages nearly one pick per game.

Also Cousins has played in one playoff game during the 4 seasons covered. The Redskins lost that game to the Packers. We know who the Packers QB is? Beyond that Rodgers has played in 5 playoff games and the Packers are 3-2 in those games. Losing in OT in 2015 because Capers had a rookie CB covering one of the best receivers in the league in OT. The other was a total mismatch against Atlanta with most of the Packer starters on IR or playing injured including Jordy and Rodgers thanks to 16 consecutive games without a bye week. (Stupid NFL)

I know that it has become very trendy to blame Rodgers for all of the Packers problems for the last 2 seasons plus for the offense performance against the Bears last week even though Rodgers played only 6 games in 2017 and played nearly all of 2018 injured. That’s OK, we can blame him for the miserable defense and STs the Packers had as well during those seasons, not to mention their excellent backup QBs. But in doing so we should try to remember that he single handedly carried this team to the playoffs every season between the 2010 SB win and the NFCCG in 2016. Just trying to be fair. Thanks, Since ‘61

Since 61. I blamed Rodgers for nothing. I made the point that they have very similar numbers over the last four years, and they do.

And no, Rodgers didn’t single handedly carry anyone. Nick Perry recently pointed out how good his receiving corps had been. You are being unfair to the many good players who have helped us win games. Woodson. Crosby. Sitton. Nelson. Jennings. Many others.

Also, your count is off on Rodgers. He started 7 games in 2017 and 16 last year. He’s missed 9 games in the last 4 years and been knocked out of the game twice.

In 2017 Rodgers was knocked out of the Vikings game during the first quarter. IIRC it was on the Packers second offensive series. In 2018 IIRC Rodgers was also knocked out in the first quarter of the Lions game (Week 17).

While he may have started those 2 games it’s not fair to claim he played those 2 games. That is why I did not count them. If he made it into the 3rd quarter or later we could say he played in those games.

If we expect Rodgers to win games by only playing in the first quarter we will need a new way to measure the results. Maybe extrapolate the first quarter over the full 4 quarters. That would certainly help the league with player safety. On the other hand think of what it will do to the FFL leagues.

As for being unfair to the other players we all watched how well the other players did in 2013 and 2017 without Rodgers when he was injured. They went a combined 5 - 12 - 1 in games without Rodgers. In 2018 when Rodgers missed playing time the Packers were outscored 51-0 while Kiser played, enough said there. I understand that football is a team game but the problem in Green Bay has been that Rodgers has been the team for the last several seasons. Finally this season he may have a defense that can hold up their end.

You like to bring up the fact that the Packers were a good team because they made the playoffs for 8 consecutive seasons. How many of those seasons do you think they reach the playoffs after 2010 without Aaron Rodgers?

Which QB should the Packers have traded for or drafted after 2010 who would have been better than Rodgers with the same roster he had from 2011 to 2018? Maybe Cousins? Or your other hero 2bitsky?

I understand that you and others are not happy with Rodgers as our QB. That’s fine, you are entitled to feel that way. But I doubt if you can justify another QB who would play better than Rodgers with the roster GB has had since the 2010 SB win.

Is he the same player he was up to the 2014 NFCCG? No, at least not consistently. Time, hits and injuries take their toll. But he can still play effectively. And as I have posted numerous times, If everyone on the roster played their position as well as Rodgers, even now and last season the Packers would be undefeated SB champs.

We’ll see how this season plays out. I’m rooting for Rodgers to finally get some help so that he doesn’t need to carry the offense, defense and STs like he’s done for several seasons. Even I know he can’t do it any longer. Maybe a few games, but not into the playoffs and beyond any longer. He shouldn’t need to, it’s just not a reasonable expectation. It never was but he did it for a long time. Thanks, Since ‘61

the six more wins for Cousins is deceptive. Last year the Packers were robbed of a victory because the refs thought we were too hard on little Kirkie. It should be only 4 more wins. Also, Rodgers was playing on one leg most of last year. If the defense can put pressure on Cousins Sunday, we'll see how elite he is.

Did he take them to the SB? No. If you want to get into the pff stats me'lange you have to dig deeper and determine the opposition. Cousins has one of the best deep balls in the game, but he won't beat anybody in crunch time. Herr Zimmer went all Bronko Nagurski last week in the shipwreck by the River. I think Pettine gets in his head early and often this week. He's not working the deep middle against Dis and a couple of third stringers like Brice and Whitehead.

In my opinion, I don't think the game-plan will really change.

We need the run game to produce and set up easy passes on play action (Easier said than done), offensive line must show continuity to open up running lanes, and only then can I visualize Rodgers working his magic slingin' the pig skin around the field.

Lotta pieces need to fall in place if we want to score TD's Sunday but I predict an improvement overall.

I think the game plan on defense changes pretty significantly. Cousins isn't going to run like Trubisky, but he's not quite the statue that Peyton Manning was, either. Whatever the case, the Packers won't be playing to contain on their pass rush. That changes a lot.

I agree with you, they really need interior pressure to get Kirk's eyes off his targets downfield and force him scramble around frantically instead. Can't let him be comfortable in the pocket.

I see a much tougher game against Minnepo than against Chigo. I suppose Minnepo will switch it up this week and attack through the air if GB focuses too much on Dalvin Cook and a run game. Minne has set themselves up perfectly to fool GB by showing game of tape on a run-heavy game, now have options to strike fast through the air, or go run heavy again.

But then again, GB hid their offense last week, and might have a plan to fool Minne with quick strikes out of nowhere. Who knows.

Its a small sample but i think GB's D is a tad better than what the Falcons put on the field. The focus this week has to be to stop the run. Let the Vikings become a one dimensional offense and make Kirk beat you....which i don't think he's capable of doing. He is not that good under pressure and the Packers will bring it.

Yes 4thand1 haters have infiltrated this site because it seems they saw all the changes in Packer land and are afraid as they should be , the Bears and Vikings did not change much from last season, pressure Cousins and he will fail , the Packer run defense is much improved so it can be a very frustrating game for the Vikings, these are fans that pray for injuries to Packers , that pretty much sums up Viking fans, what really kills them is after the Vikings the next most popular team in Minny is the Packers even over the Twins this I know because I work with US Bank most of their executives are from Wisconsin.

This is actually very poetic. The use of commas instead of periods gave that sentence a hiphop cadence. Very cool!

Good luck to Cousins when he throws the ball more than ten times. Atlanta is a diving team. Matt “Ice” Ryan is really dwindling. Week two the Vikings should be afraid. Green Bay should be slightly afraid if Bakhtiari can’t play due to injury, or if Rogers wants to hold the ball forever. Should be a great game with the Packers winning it. Still early in the year with a lot of ball game left. Sure wish the Packers had better running backs. Aaron Jones lacks durability and the ability to shed tackles. The two Williams runners are better suited as is Vitale to hammer it out for a smooth ride to victory.

Aaron Jones needs to touch (run or reception) the ball 8-10 times in the 1st quarter alone against the Vikes. ... He needs to get started early in this game & run late to kill the clock.

Let Adams do his thing and score points. They are not great in the deep middle. The safeties can be taken with the long ball. Bhaktiari was playing with pain against the Bears. Hopefully he can make it go.

The trend for the Falcons in recent years has been to struggle offensively on the road.

The Packers need to do a better job of holding the edge against the Vikes than Atlanta did. Cook beat Atlanta to rip off several big gains off tackle last weekend.

If Diggs is still dinged, that's a bonus for the Packers--he has a history of being a shadow of his normal self when he's not 100%, although I expect the Vikings to feature the TE this week until the Packers show they can take it away.

I think the Pack should go after Dez Bryant
He’s looking really fit and sharp in a few training videos I’ve seen and he’ll be ready in October and he’ll come cheap
Great receiver

Since today Bleacher report article

Although Dez Bryant doesn't expect to return to the field until mid-October, the free-agent wide receiver is drawing interest on the open market.

ESPN's Josina Anderson reported Thursday on NFL Live she had spoken to Bryant's trainer, who said "some teams have been expressing interest" in the three-time Pro Bowler.

Anderson added Bryant has the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens and Carolina Panthers atop his wish list.

I look for Rodgers to have a much better game than he did against the Bears. And the Packers D is for real. I don't anticipate the Vikings running for as many yards as they did last week, forcing Cousins to throw more. The concerns I have for the Packers is the OL and protecting Rodgers. This could also be one of those games where a special teams play will decide the outcome. Or maybe a defensive score will be the deciding factor of who wins this game? I'd love to see Savage get his first pick 6 of his career:-) The teams know each other well. This may very well go into overtime. At any rate it will be a hard fought battle. I hope the Packers come out on top and go 2-0. Go! Pack! Go!

It’s interesting to me how some make definitive statements on any team based on one game. It’s the NFL = not for long!

Old School

You seem to like research and IMPLY you are fair.

Add another line to your BS story. Go back to what you did for Rodgers and Cous and add a line for the other packer QBs who played. Instead of immediately whining think a bit about why different players showed SO BAD with the same team mates you praise and the same coaching.

3 shut outs in nine games. That is the difference between Cous and Rodgers. how many games were shut outs pitched at teams where Cous was at but didn't start/finish the game?

Since I think you are a troll I doubt you will do this as simple as it is
