Packers Periscope: Week 17 vs Detroit Lions

Even though the Green Bay Packers have secured a spot in the playoffs, they still have a lot to play for in the regular-season finale. Beating the Detroit Lions would inch them closer to the first overall seed in the NFC, and a path to the Super Bowl that must travel through Lambeau. A lot to play for indeed.

For the fourth straight year, the Packers will face the Lions in week 17. They have lost the previous two, however, Aaron Rodgers played a combined total of nine snaps in those contests. In 19 games against Detroit, Rodgers is averaging 253 passing yards per game, 2.1 touchdowns, 0.4 interceptions, and a 107.7 quarterback rating.

The Lions haven’t had much to play for since they last faced Green Bay in week six. The Packers ultimately won the game 23-22, but Detroit would go on to lose nine of their next ten games. Evidently, Green Bay was gifted a win thanks to two “blown” calls against the Lions. Of course, that defeats the fact that Matthew Stafford and the Detroit offense could not move the ball at all during the second half.

The Packers totaled 22 first downs to the Lions’ 13 and 447 total yards of offensive production compared to 299.

Green Bay won’t face Stafford this time around after the team officially IR-ed him last week with a back injury. In his absence, the Lions have turned to backups, Jeff Driskel and David Blough. Blough is expected to make his fifth career start against the Packers on Sunday.

If we’re being honest, a smart Detroit team would prefer to lose if it meant improving their position in the draft. Their defense is stricken of talent and is in need of some serious help ranking as the 29th overall defense in 2019.

However, expect the Lions to at least compete early on in the game because a win would mean possibly spoiling a run for Green Bay in the playoffs. Last week, the Packers claimed the NFC North title in their win over the Minnesota Vikings, but the divisional crown was only the start of a list of hopeful accomplishments.

If I had to venture a guess, I would say their number two goal is securing the one seed and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. The Packers can do that if they get a win over the Lions and a 49ers loss or tie to the Seahawks, or a tie with the Lions and a 49ers loss to the Seahawks and a Saints loss or tie to the Panthers.

Win the game. Sweep the division. Let the playoff seeding fall where it will. If that means SF comes to us in the divisional round, so be it. If that means NO comes to us and we'd be @ SF in the NFC CG (assuming it worked out that way), so be that too. It's the playoffs. You can't hide forever. If you want to win it all, you have to beat the big boys in crunch time. Before the MIN game, I thought this was merely a team that didn't beat itself. Now, I think this team is capable of winning in the dance. The young uns grew up on MNF.

Winning the game would be great, but IMO having all their key players staying healthy for the playoffs is more important.

If we're going to talk about bad calls.. I don't think we should forget the "touchdown" given to Detroit.. It's old news now... But that was not a touchdown... Jmho Go Pack!!!!

We saw a few bottom-dwellers play lights out football irregardless of draft position. I would expect Detro to play to spoil GB as their backup QBs will play for their football futures. Bring the A-game every game.

Just win. The players will be highly motivated by the prospect of getting a week off.
