Packers Periscope: Preseason Week 1 vs Houston Texans

If the Packers and Texans didn’t have bad blood that may change after these joint practices. The last time these two teams faced each other was a snowy week 13 contest in Green Bay during the 2016 season. It was the Packers second win in their run the table finish of six consecutive wins. In present day, both teams had a chippy first day of joint practices with the Packers walking away pretty banged up. The Packers and Texans will face each other for their first games of the 2019 preseason on Thursday at Lambeau Field.

Reports indicate a fight broke out after Houston’s first-year corner Lonnie Johnson recorded a hard hit on rookie third-round tight end Jace Sternberger. Luckily, it got broken up pretty quick but the damage wasn’t over.

A multitude of Packers players got hurt at some point during the practice.

Just to recap:

Sternberger left the field as a result of the hit that popped off his helmet.

Wide receiver Trevor Davis was slow to get up after a kick return.

Wide receiver Jake Kumerow continues to deal with a hand issue that appeared to arise during Friday’s Family Night.

Safety Adrian Amos had to exit with a banged-up shoulder.

Outside linebacker Za'Darius Smith was seen limping after going through a one on one.

Edge Rashan Gary hobbled off after ending up on the ground following a pass rush rep.

There may have been more that I could have missed.

Overall, Matt LaFleur said he did like the energy following Monday’s practice and didn’t comment much on the extent of any of the injuries outside of Davis who will be evaluated further. Hopefully, that is an indication the rest of the injuries aren’t as serious.

“We should know something more the next day (Tuesday)”, said LaFleur.

As far as Thursday’s game, he did say the team had not yet committed to holding Aaron Rodgers out of the game. LaFleur stated that if things go well today, Rodgers will sit out until week two.

That means there will be plenty of work for backup DeShone Kizer who has seen a rough start to his 2019 camp. Every day it seems he has thrown an interception. He threw one Monday to Texans linebacker Dylan Cole.

The Packers offense has been well behind the defense so far this camp which is to be expected as they adapt to the new system. Thursday will be yet another crash course in terms of grasping LaFleur’s concepts.

This will also be our first chance to get a look at some of the newcomers including rookie safety Darnell Savage and Gary. Hopefully, both will play at least a series. Then, there is also the receiving group where the competition continues to flourish.

Week one of preseason should provide insight as to what receivers are distinguishing themselves. Both Davis and Kumerow had productive Family Night’s but could be held out on Thursday for precaution.

If you’re looking for a matchup to watch, just keep an eye on Green Bay’s front vs the Houston offensive line. The Texans selected Alabama State offensive tackle Tytus Howard with their first pick in April. He should have his hands full with the Packers edge group.

Preseason is about evaluation more than it is anything else. Thursday will certainly be entertaining but the Packers have a ways to go to get down to the final 53. This will be their first big step.

Hopefully, none of those injuries really aren't serious. As we've seen a number of times in GB, injuries we don't think are serious seem to linger, and linger, and linger... Just ONCE I'd like to see a TC, preseason, and season without a multitude of "Nagging" injuries...

Thursday I'd like to see Z Smith and Gary lined up on the field for at least a series. First of all it would indicate the injuries really weren't that serious and second I'll bet they whip the hell out of Tytus Howard who IMO was drafted way to early.

Most importantly NO MORE injuries and have a good showing. Win, lose, or draw...That doesn't matter. Progress at this point does and it needs to start Thursday.

Injuries; The fear of evil. Feeling more evil is exactly what the packers don't need. This team must learn to fight through injuries and it's evil. Players get lazy. They don't earn respect. They lose their place. Their ability. Feeling comfortable is one thing. And any true injury deserves compensation. But considering the ouch of hurting your team. Shows lack of caring. Unpleasant as they have been. The result has been losing. Others wanting more money. And the coach sleeps a little less. Worry with a little less surprise won't keep us out of the woods. But it is necessary for players to play through their pains. Missing time must stop.

People like yourself don't seem to realize that 9 out of 10 times, it's not the player making the call to sit on the sidelines. It's the training staff.

Most players don't want to come off the field.

Personally not too worried about these injuries. As we get closer and closer to full speed and full contact, guys are going to get banged up because they're not conditioned for it yet. Camp and early season injuries are a direct result of having fewer padded practices and full contact drills, so guys are getting banged up later, and have less time to recuperate before the year starts. Nature of the beast in the modern NFL.

The Packers need a backup QB, Kizer isn't it.

Biggest need by far. Rodgers goes down season over. Even if he only misses a few games, they are likely losses with Kizer. Why roll the dice on Rodgers playing all 16? I think Gute is either overestimating Kizer's talent or underestimating need of a reliable backup. Both are wrong.

or GUTE is correctly assessing the rest of the talent on the team and knowing without Rodgers playing as GOAT this is not a playoff team

If Rodgers plays as one of the top 5 QBs this year it is not a playoff team

There is nobody who can save the day. Nobody who can carry this team outside rare talents who are not available. why waste resources on hoping to get lucky?

Both packer backups are closer to the norm in the NFL than Rodgers is.
There are not 5 other quarterbacks who could carry this roster to the playoffs.

Or Gute knows the reliable veteran backup tree is pretty bare right now and would rather wait to see what insurance policies picked up in the off-season get deemed expendable at the end of camp. No sense throwing away future draft capital for someone that could become available in 3 weeks. Or he likes what he sees from Boyle and is waiting to see if he takes the next step this preseason. I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see Hundley, Paxton Lynch, or Geno available at the end of camp. But do any of them really represent an upgrade over what we have?

Unless you want the Packers jumping on the Brockweiler express or signing Brandon Weeden, there's no rush to make a move.

" Or he likes what he sees from Boyle and is waiting to see if he takes the next step this preseason."

You are correct Matt Gonzalez. This is what's going on regarding Boyle. Boyle was kept on as the no. 3 for a reason last year. Boyle was kept knowing a valuable roster spot would be "wasted" for a year. That's how high Gutey believes in Boyle. Boyle and Kizer were both investments. One is going to pay off (Boyle) and the other is going to be sold to the scrap dealer for peanuts in a few weeks (Kizer).
I am maybe in the minority here but I think Boyle is an absolute stud qb and will be the guy taking over for Rodgers in the not too distant future. I can't wait to see how he shines on Thursday. Trust me folks, Kizer is done in Green Bay. Gutey made a mistake with the trade for Randall but made up for it and surpassed it by keeping Boyle last year. Gutey starts to cash in his investment on Thursday. You'll see.

Say What? If Rodgers plays like and is a top 5 QB in 2019 I'd say chances are pretty damn good the Packers are in the playoffs. They don't need anyone to "save the day", they just need Rodgers to play as Rodgers can. With the defense I expect the Packers to have and a healthy Rodgers that's enough..

Clearly you don't think much at all of this "Team" for 2019. Hopefully you get surprised at the end of the season as the Packers are hosting a playoff game at Lambeau.

Whom do you recommend as a back up QB able to save the day?

From what I have read, it seems that the Texans have been outplaying us during the joint practices. Or at least the Packers offense is still a work in progress. MLF has also expressed some displeasure with some of the teams intensity. There is plenty of time to get this taken care of. I was somewhat puzzled by the shorter practice times because the offense may need it. Perhaps the fear of injuries may play a role in that decision.

If the Packers play real defense. Like top 10. They run the ball, Rogers only has to be proficient, accurate, protect the ball, and move the chains. He wouldn’t be required to play miracle ball every game. We will figure out how good of an offensive line we have. I don’t think we get a repeat of the last two years. Looking forward to some fresh blood.
