Packers Gutekunst Emphasizes Special Teams in His First NFL Draft

The Packers drafted two potential long-term specialists in the 2018 NFL Draft.

As new Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst finished up his first NFL Draft, the general consensus for the first year GM right now is that he did pretty darn well.  To most fans, the major shockers of the 2018 Packers draft class were the selection of punter JK Scott in the fifth round and long snapper Hunter Bradley in the seventh round.  But rather than sitting shocked at those selections, I’m finding myself overjoyed that some serious attention was paid to what could be long-term solutions at special teams positions for the Packers.  Here are the reasons for my joy:

JK Scott is the real deal

Let me preface this by saying that I am a fan of Justin Vogel and what he brought to the table in 2017 for the Packers.  But with a punter like Scott sitting available in the fifth round and looking like he could have a long NFL career, I have no qualms about his selection in the fifth round.

Once teams reach the later rounds of the draft, finding diamonds in the rough is the ultimate goal.  If Scott becomes a 10-year starter for Packers, this was an excellent selection by Gutekunst.

Looking at his career at Alabama, Scott started four years at punter for the Crimson Tide program.  During his time there, he boasted impressive stats each year that included leading the country in gross average his freshman year where he was named to first-team All-SEC honors, first-team Freshman All-American and a Ray Guy Award finalist for the best punter in college football.  His average slid down during his sophomore campaign, but Scott would recover during his junior and senior year campaigns where he was honored with second-team All-American honors his junior year and first-team All-SEC honors his junior and senior years.

During the 2017 season with the Packers, Vogel broke the Packers single-season net average record at 41.6 yards and was close to the gross average with 44.4 yards.  Scott’s entry to the team brings a four year gross average of 45.6 yards where his season-high average came during his freshman year at 48 yards.  On top of the impressive yardage numbers, Scott brings a versatile leg that can kick for distance or hang time with an average time of 4.55 seconds and a 9.1% return rate during his senior season.

Long snapper for the future

Since Brett Goode tore his ACL in 2015, the team has been looking to replace him with a long-term solution.  But all attempts to replace Goode with a younger long-term player have all led to Goode being resigned prior to both the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

By adding Hunter Bradley in the seventh round, the selection certainly turned heads as the position is rarely drafted by teams in the NFL.  But, in looking to lock in a player at this position, Gutekunst took the leap and ensured that Bradley would join this summer’s training camp with the Packers and not risk him going elsewhere as an undrafted free agent.

Long snapper is a position where quality play doesn’t get recognized.  It’s only the botched field goal snaps and balls flying over the heads of punters that get the negative publicity.  In his two seasons of long snapping for the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Bradley successfully connected on all of his snaps.  His history as a tight end, where he initially tried to walk on the team prior to ACL injuries, will bring some athleticism to the team as well.

Special teams matter

In his first draft as the Packers General Manager, Gutekunst made the statement that special teams matter for the Green Bay Packers and this was music to my ears.  Winning the field position battle in the punting game gets overlooked by many, but the importance is critical.  While the Packers, with Rodgers leading the offense, will more often than not be in the bottom half of the league in the number of punts on the season, putting on emphasis on this aspect of the game is important.  With a defense that has struggled in recent years, any advantage in field position should be taken advantage of.

As the roster currently sits, both Scott and Bradley will enter training camp in competition for their respective positions.  The Packers signed long snapper Zach Triner to the practice squad last December and Vogel remains on the roster at punter.  Gutekunst’s philosophy on draft picks making the final roster will be determined this coming August and September and perhaps the best gauge for that will be in these two positions.  Ted Thompson was reputable for not letting go of his draft picks, even if they weren’t performing better than others that were cut.  If both the punter and long snapper positions make it to August and into preseason action with competition, it will be interesting to see where the chips fall for the final roster.

I too thought Vogel did a good job last year so was a bit surprised they picked a punter but when you go into the draft with a lot of lower round picks you can afford the luxury of picks for these positions.
For the Packers they make a lot of sense.

I was not impressed with Vogel last year.

I heard somewhere and firmly believe,
”The punt is the single most important play of any football game”.

I also believe that anything taken in the later rounds hardly ever pan out.

The chances this kid will pan out are pretty darn good, in my opinion.

Can’t wait to see what a 5 sec. hang time feels like when it’s on my team
and not someone else's.

I was not surprised by this pick.

I often wondered why we did not draft punters more often in the later rounds.

Heck, I would take one every year, (hopefully in rounds 6 -7),
just for compitition.

Plus he can kick off, which if he does, it opens up anther roster spot,
i think?

If it does, thats also huge, in my opinion.

I would like to add.

This to me was low hanging fruit for Gutes 1st. draft.

A starter in round 5,

sounds pretty good for any bodies draft board.

This and a 1st round next year, and 2 stud corners, and at least one receiver, LS done, checks alot of boxes.

I see a two year process hear, this year we should go to play offs,
SB if Perry and Matthews have good years.

Next year after the Edge rusher and Tight End postion are filled
with high draft picks I see SB for as far as I can see.

Then alls we need is another QB in 2020 and we are set for another decade
of surpremeness.

Gute, I think has good forsight and is thinking 2, 3 years and beyond, taking the best from Uncle Tom and learning from his mistakes as well.

One more thing.

I think we are going to have one of the best defenses in the league day one.

We should get out of the blocks in pretty good shape.

Maybe winning 3 out of the first 4 games.

Than we might have a lull because surly One of our edge rushers will get hurt. Maybe winning 3 out of the next 6 games.

But than get up to full strength for the Dec. games and hopefully the play offs, 4 out of the final 6, putting us at 10 wins this year.

But the future looks brighter for 2019 and beyond folks, stay tuned.

So my prediction is this.

This year we get to the play offs.

Next year we win SB.

Oh and incidentally,
this is the same year the Milwaukee Bucks will win the NBA championship.

I suggest stocking up and a lot of beer and plenty of champaign, it’s going to be HUGE folks.. HUGE!!!

And also learn that fine art of popping a champaign cork with a blade,
This will be very impressive for your friends when popping all these corks.

I like the idea to have punter who is kick holder and back up kicker.

But, I like Justin Vogel as well. So, this might be tough decision to make. Only thing I can see Packers to be in win- win position is that JK prove itself before the end of the TC and during TC Packers to find trade partner for Justin, hoping that partner will be in AFC... 5th round compensatoy pick would be OK by my opinion...

Yeah, the backup QB needs to be able to focus and playing QB. And the Backup QB being the holder should not be a factor in moving on from a guy who can't read the field or make throws because doing so would mess with Mason Crosby.

Holy grade inflation, Batman! Some of those evaluators don't know how to grade anything lower than a C. It's like the self-esteem movement run amok in the NFL.

We have to recognize how some of these guys grade, though. Some will clearly state in their analyses that they only care if teams picked players high on their (the draftnik's) boards. Some seem to look only at whether teams appear to have addressed what the evaluator saw as needs. It's all over the place.

Still...NO and Seattle (the two teams the Packers dealt with early) are pretty broadly panned in this draft. I wonder if anyone who was so big on finding a way to get Schneider back in January is rethinking that at the moment?

Schneider had 1 or two fabulous drafts where he got Sherman and Thomas in the later rounds. Since then, his drafts have been mediocre at best (except for the Russell Wilson pick), they have no cap space, and are in full rebuilding mode now.

Yeah, go compare the Packers 2011 draft to the Seahawks 2011 draft and it explains a LOT of what we've seen of the past 7 years. The Packers 2011 draft is a D at best. Unless you like replacement level corners and overpaid slot receivers, then maybe you can give it a D+.

I think in a year where we had a load of picks on day 3 these were excellent picks, especially Scott. A punter who can kick for distance, hang time, or direction at will will be a useful weapon at some point. We may be done being at a disadvantage on ST.

I'm not sure if I'd use valuable draft picks for special teams players (usually reserved for udfa's), but at least it's nice to know that we should be set at Longsnapper and Punter for quite awhile.

It was the use of a 5th, in particular, that made me wince.

I had no problem with a 7th for a longsnapper. This way they got their guy without having to fight through the UDFA morass to get him. Everyone was worried that the Packers have all these day 3 picks but didn't think they'd make the 53. I feel pretty good about these two guys making the team.

I was puzzled with the Scott pick at first. I thought Vogel did well for a rookie. Then I looked up some stats.. Vogel was average at best. I think after a few years of Tim Masthay, I finally saw competent punting last year and thought it was 'good'.

Scott looks like a stud. If he's a ten year starter and can flip field position like he did at bama, he is absolutely worth that fifth rd pick

...picking a LS didn't surprise me at all. Everyone not named Brett Goode sucked last year

I agree: I always cringe when someone picks a punter. (In EDIT) I was standing in the middle of Burlington Coat Factory (not in Burlington, though) when the Packers made that pick. My response was emphatic enough that my wife came over looking seriously concerned and asked what was wrong...

Someone made the post yesterday or the day before that Vogel benefitted from having good gunners forcing FCs and being on top of returners when they caught the ball. I can't help but wonder if the past Packer punters made Vogel look better, too. Seemed to me that he had a tendency to kick flat. Certainly something that would likely have been correctable.

I don't worry about Vogel. I think he'll land on his feet...but it could be that a team with a lousy punting situation might get the Packers a conditional pick for Vogel just so they don't have to fight for him as a cut.

Thinking of next year... let’s say one of our picks would be top 10 first round pick. Do we use the NO pick and package the two to get to maybe a a 2 spot?

Do you then think the Pack would have the guts to pick a stud QB! I know BLASPHEMY you say!!!!!!! But let’s get real Rodgers is tough but brittle. If he goes down all this SB dribble is just that Dribble. It takes 3 to 5 years on the very norm to get a QB up to the mental and the speed of the pro game. Just fun food for thought. Carr, Wenzel, Gott, etc., have shown what it takes to move a franchise up the boards.

Keeping a zillion dollar QB like Wilson is a perfect example of a short SB window there is with a team like the Seahawks. That once crazy defense has gone “poof” for greener FA pastures.

The contract to Rodgers has really got to have the smarts for the organization to be competitive long term.
It would be stupid to give Rodgers an unbelievable “guaranteed” contract with his injury history. ... if done wisely by drafting a studs blue chipper QB next year-we would have the future set up to buy some high ticket free agents and soar us to new heights.

They won't take a QB though. Actually an early look at next years draft there aren't many up and coming QB's. Obviously that can change, but there won't be the QB's like this year.

I like you and many others thought Vogel did really well and was going to be our punter of our future.
One area I don't know how good he was, was the holding. So that maybe played a part of it too?

"Once teams reach the later rounds of the draft, finding diamonds in the rough is the ultimate goal."

I have been saying a similar thing since the draft. Anytime you can add a player in the 5th round or after that can change games, you have to take that player. I don't know what the percentage is but I would guess that maybe 50%? of players drafted in the 5th round make the teams final 53?
So if you can add a player that can be on your team for many years to come and contribute, you have to do that. I think Scott is that guy.

The LS I don't necessarily like drafting, but after the mess last year, I get it.

I will say that I think its important that they do invest more into special teams. It is an important part of the game that often gets overlooked.

I like picking a punter, because we had 12 picks. That's almost too many. And Scott was the best in college last year, only had 5 punts returned. Great punters can tilt the field for a defense.

We came into the draft with 12 picks. This creates a good opportunity to fill two positions for the long term. They are ST positions so all the better that they were selected in later rounds. If Scott lives up to his college performance he could be a difference maker for years.

My concern with Scott is how well will he punt in Green Bay, especially in December when the ball becomes hard and heavy as a rock. I don't know how much cold weather punting he handled at 'Bama. I thought Vogel did a creditable job during the cold weather games last season.

As for Hunter Bradley if he makes the team and we never hear his name then we made a good selection. Thanks, Since '61

Love the fact that they got a top flight punter and a LS. Shows me that they have a plan and rather than focus as usual on just one area of need this year, they're looking at the whole team and saying we need to fix multiple areas and don't need to be in a 5-Year Plan. Let's start now.

I give Gute's draft an A+. The main reasons are snagging a 1st next year, addressing the special teams, and continuing to improve on this team's terrible athleticism.

Many fans want us to draft average-at-best athletes who are "football players." Every time a fast player is mentioned, some idiot touts Jerry Rice's slow 40 times at the Combine (never mind that Rice proceeded to go fitness freak and increase his speed in the pros).

Here's what suffers when you ignore speed: SPECIAL TEAMS. You can't field a good set of gunners from turtles like Rollins, Allison, R. Rodgers, Gunter, Gilbert, Ryan, Fackrell, Yancey, and Jamaal Williams.

You NEED--not "would like," but NEED--guys like Donnerson, Valdez-Scantling, EQ Brown, and Burks.

Add in an elite punting prospect and possible long-snapper, and now we're finally breathing life into our Special Teams.

Bravo, Gute!

Grades on draft classes before at least 3 years are pretty much useless.

That being said the grades are purely about value. Where they had these players graded prior to the draft, and where the teams ended up drafting these players. No one really knows until years down the road how it will actually be.

If Davenport turns into Julius Peppers Green Bay is going to look foolish for trading out, and NO will look like Geniuses. If he is Jamaal Reynolds the Saints will look horrible trading away a future 1st round pick for it. If Alexander and the 1st round pick next year become pro bowl level players the Packers will look like geniuses.

Fine, Handsback, then you can start commenting 3 years from now. Until then, we'll enjoy offering our predictions like normal fans.

That begs the question: if we're spending significant time reading and posting on blogs like this, do we really qualify as 'normal fans'?

Depends on how we define normal. More importantly who wants to be normal, whatever it does mean? I’m perfectly content being me, again, whatever that means. Thanks, Since ‘61

Older people love that fantasy world.
Guess what?
It's really no different now than when you turned 20.
Think about it.

Old style punter. I DO wonder what his release time is. But he can also kick FG's and kickoffs when needed. I like that.

Curious to see how that plays in today's NFL.

Punting and field goals are for teams not having AR G.O.A.T. Points win Super Bowls, not punts. I love both of these picks. They better train hard ‘ cause they’re gonna be having a lot of free time watching Rodgers throwing 2 point conversions after touchdown passes and runs. Run the board, baby!

And now.....................Wait for it......................................Back to reality!!!!!!! I hate to inform you sister but "Every team" in the NFL punts the football. And just because you only punt 3 times a game instead of 7-8 it doesn't make the punt any less important in terms of field position and momentum. Momentum changes 2-3 times a game in your favor can be a very big deal.

McCarthy’s been pushing the envelope lately, going for it on 4th down on their own side of the 50, so anything’s possible. Punts just seem old fashioned to me. I don’t care about fake punts as a tool. But I do like aggressive football like going for it on 4th down, especially with a strong, disciplined offense with at least one big ass pounder at running back. Yes, we will need to punt, and that’s why Scott appears to be just what we need.

Would have liked to see Gutekunst address problem areas on the offensive line, TE and pass rush before special teams, but I guess he had his priorities.

Special teams are 1/3 of the game so it better be a priority. He addressed OL, with a 5th rounder before taking the punter and the LS. TE didnt work out but Graham is under contract for 3 years and we still have Kendricks. Pass rush was weak this year and we have a few options there already in Beigel and Gilbert maybe Donnerson.

I'm just Happy that Murphy let TT go as GM so we don't have to see under performing draft picks like, Fackrell take roster spots from players who perform, like Reggie Gilbert. If Vogel outperforms this Scott kid in camp then hopefully they keep Vogel as he earned it. if Scott wins out by all means keep Scott.

They cut Vogel today so I guess it's Scott job.
