Not surprising to me. He has significant more upside than Kumerow. I would have been very dissapointed if matters were reversed. I was surprised about Dexter.

Malik Taylor surprised me. Physically intriguing, but still under the radar despite Gute’s comments at draft time.

Sadly Williams was not a surprise to me despite his running ability. If he accepts, would expect the PS to continue to try to master blocking and assignments as well as consistent catching.

Somewhat. But the fact he is injured might have actually helped him. There is an unknown if he was going to improve over last years disappointment. There is a possiblity he was kept to put on IR then postpone the decision with him till he has had 2 weeks of practice after IR.

Martin will go on IR (Adams could as well) and the Packers could use the roster spot on another DL after cuts are made and they see who becomes available.

I'm pretty sure the Packers think so too and I do as well. But Tramon would probably require a 5M salary/contract, which the Packers can't afford. He's also old, especially for a CB and they have to find out what young players can do and what potential they have.

Basically it comes down to Tramon at 5M per vs Sullivan on an udfa contract. The last 2 CB spots go to yound players who can develop.

You have to understand that! Its been going on for as long as the salary cap has been around. Sheesh...

That includes 3 deep safeties, 2 hybrids and 6 cbs, one of whom, Ento, is not available and will likely move to IR tomorrow. The replacement may be at any position. Given the formations we use 8 DBs and 2 Hybrids doesn’t seem excessive to me.

10 DBs are a norm in today’s NFL very much like 10 OL. Incredibly important positions in a passing league.

If Adams off-field efforts, to avoid playing, was equaled by any of his on-field performances, the Packers may have another All-Pro. Also his inclusion speaks to the team's greatest weakness - their D-Line. Only Clark is a proven NFL lineman. Hoping Keke can be but after him a bunch of bench players. C'mon waiver wire!

Lowry has appeared in 64 games for three different HCs and two GMs. He had his contract extended. How is he not a proven NFL lineman?

I’m kind of surprised that Montravious made the team, unless they’re going to
Put him on IR and activate him mid season.

Teams constantly ran at Lowry last year - with much success. A big stuffed animal on roller skates would have been better at DE. Although lower-paid Lowry was OK. - higher- paid Lowry was not. But what does 7+ million/yr. buy you these days?

Okay, I'm happy with most of the decisions. I'm confident that most if not all of the cut players we want will make it through waivers and be signed to the Practice Squad. That includes surprise cuts like Hanson and Kumerow. With the new rules, there's no downside to stashing them on the PS rather than on the main roster.

Kabion Ento and Kamal Martin will go in short-term IR after spending a day on the active roster, thus immediately freeing up two slots. The Packers might possibly pick up some players on the waiver wire, but that's not too likely considering that they're picking at the back end of the order. No gems are likely to fall that far. But that leaves room to immediately sign one or two known-quantity free agents: Clay Matthews to bolster the Inside Linebacker position. Jared Veldheer to start or back up the right tackle position. Tramon Williams to bolster the CB position.

I don't think we need Tramon yet, but as soon as a starting cornerback gets injured he becomes the obvious solution. If Tramon's pride will allow it, we could sign him to the PS under the new rules, while paying him a much higher salary than the normal PS member. That would allow him to practice with the team, and get called up on game day if needed. I wouldn't be surprised if deals are already in place with Matthews and Veldheer, but they knew they'd need to wait until Sunday so as to allow Ento and Martin to go on IR.

Interesting take on Tramon Williams and the Practice Squad. I think Chad Sullivan is already a better option, not a money issue. Ento over Sullivan is very interesting. Unfortunately with the camp restrictions and no Preseason games one has no idea why that decision was made.

I've read in the past week or so that signing FAs after week 1 has different Contract commitments than if signed before. Mainly that if you cut then you don't have to pay them, where as if signed before week 1 the team is committed to a full year salary.

There's better options at ILB than Clay, that will be more of a headache than its worth. He's not going to play special teams or take being non-active game day well. IMHO his day has come and gone.

Let me just add that there's got to be a reason that Matthews, Veldheer, and Williams haven't yet signed with any team. They are all better than a large number of other players at their positions around the NFL (I'd guess better than at least 50% of other players). There are a bunch of teams they'd clearly improve. So what's the delay? The delay makes perfect sense if there are secret deals in place to come back to Green Bay, after the players going on IR open up the roster spots.

However, in digging into the 2020 Practice Squad rules a little deeper, I see that there are maximum salary limits and some activation restrictions which would make it impractical to stash a player like Tramon Williams on the PS. So I retract that part of my previous comments. Nonetheless, I think there's a good chance that one, two, or all three of those players end up playing for the Packers this year, perhaps as soon as Sunday.

I think the surprise guy making the team was Yosh Nijam. The Packers drafted 3 offensive lineman and only one breaks camp. They also added Wagner via FA. He (Yosh) beat the odds.

I will say a prayer every night for the health of Christian Kirksey. I am not sold on Burks and Martin is gonna be out awhile. Our run defense is a question mark and outside of Kirksey what’s changed? Dline is exactly the same.

Packers also need Sternberger to step up. Not what we have been hearing so far?

I am usually really optimistic this time of year. I think this is a 9 maybe 10 win squad. A little regression from last season. Anyone else a little uneasy with the first 53 roster? I still think we will see a couple of tweaks.

No idea what the record will be, there are so many uncontrollable factors, plus they now play a first place schedule. I do believe there are going to be a better team and are improved everywhere but RT.

The Draft picks were all IOL. Yosh is a OT. Keeping him tells me they feared he wouldn't make it back to the Practice squad, has the ability to play this year, Alex Light really is as bad as he looked and OT is a weak spot.

Keke and Gary will be able to play IMHO on snaps that often went to just 2 DL sets, replacing a DB. I sound like a broken record but it wasn;t just the Dline but a lack of execution by the entire team that lead to the the games where the run really hurt them.

That said I would like to see Upgrades over Lowery and Lancaster down the road. Tough to think Adams could be of help but "potential wise, he is a huge upgrade and would allow KC to move to end in some sets.

Anthony Chickillo was cut by the Saints and would be a great addition for us at ILB. He can take Martin's spot when he goes to IR tomorrow. I wanted us to sign him during free agency but NO signed him. He plays hard, hits hard, as is a great special teamer.

Then add Veldheer at OT and a guy like Benito Jones DT from Mississippi state just cut from Miami. They can take the roster spots of Ento and Adams as they go on IR. Shore up these 3 positions ILB-OT-DT and we will be solid.

How about kicking the tires on WR Hakeem Butler just released from AZ?

I meant in quality. The same roster weaknesses are there, and a couple new ones to boot. TE will be better by default this year. WR is no different, which is shocking. DT is no different. Also shocking. ILB could be better. Kirksey has more upside, but is riskier than Blake. WILB looks just as bad. RT is way worse.

This was a good team in 2019, but not a great one. It hasn't made the jump to great IMO, and I don't know that it's any "more good."

There’s still work to be done, the PS is now at 16 more of an extension of the 53 this season. Some guys to be put on IR and corresponding moves made to the 53. A lot of these young guys Savage, Gary, Kingsley, Jenkins, Lazard, MVS are all vets now and should be coming into their own. Can’t wait! Go Pack!

If you believe it was luck that we went 13-3 and that we didn’t improve then you’re gonna be worried. If you think we went 13-3 because we protected the ball and executed in the red zone and that Sternberger, Jenkins, Savage, Dillon, EQ, Lane Taylo and Rashan Gary might have improved from last year, then you probably realize we were a good team that got better.

Scott made some plays in camp and showed instinct. Significantly, he did so playing in Greene’s hybrid position not deep. Greene needed a back up. Scott was seemingly drafted with that in mind and looks to have some potential. I don't find it surprising.

I'm excited that Nijman made the squad; he needed to play well enough to be thrown in a real game, so apparently his technique etc. have developed enough to not just be an "athlete." Vern Scott had an excellent camp, in fact, based on reports, he has the potential to develop into a starter in a year or two. Malik Taylor is an interesting guy with his 4.46 speed and RB build; he's got some poor-man's-Sterling-Sharpe to him.
I wonder who the starting ROT will be in Minnesota? It may be Nijman, especially if they plan to run a lot, but I've also wondered if they've done any cross-training of Runyon; he's certainly got the right tools and background to be a stop-gap there.

"I wonder who the starting ROT will be in Minnesota? It may be Nijman, especially if they plan to run a lot,"

Just don't think that's going to happen. He was a PS guy last year who ended up on IR and only has had a handful of practices this year with no camp. Being active on game day will be the first step for him. If he is active, they might line him up as an extra blocking TE?

I'd be betting on Wagner as the week 1 RT. He's returned to practice and appears to be ready.

This thing is still in flux. I like many of their decisions, wish they had chosen differently with a couple of guys, but overall this looks like it will suffice.

They clearly like Yosh Nijman, and if he turns out to be anywhere near as effective as he was with Virginia Tech, he'll be to #1 steal of UDFA from 2019. Maybe unnoticed by many, but they fiercely protected him last year while they developed his technique work. He's got a great resume, having held these ACC pass rushers over 3 years, all 1st Round picks, to ZERO sacks on a crappy VT team: #4 overall pick Ferrell, #7 Allen, #13 Wilkins, #16 Burns, #17 Lawrence. He also has insane athleticism for his size at 6-7 314. In 2018 playing RT, Nijman earned a 75.7 pass blocking grade, allowing just 12 total pressures (10 hurries, one hit, one sack) in 639 pass blocking snaps at VT. Previous 3 years he had 22 consecutive starts at LT, 1844 pass blocking snaps with similar results.

The freakish athleticism? Yosh ran a 4.83 40 at his Pro Day, a 4.50 short shuttle (2nd among all OL), 114” broad jump and a 8.07 3-cone. At 6-7 314. RAS: Great size, Elite Speed, Elite Explosion, Good agility - OVERALL 9.8 - His 3 cone on his Pro Day would have put him as the highest rated offensive tackle ever in RAS.

As for Montravius Adams and Malik Taylor, we're talking about 2 guys at the very bottom of the Packers 53 man roster. Think about that. This is a pretty solid team, loaded with playmakers (that said, I still need to see a shit ton more from Lancaster, Lowry and Adams). Trusting Kingsley Keke will be a force this season, and he'll be given a serious amount of reps to prove his worth and development. I can see Ty Summers doing just fine alongside Christian Kirksey until Kamal Martin returns. Plenty of OL rotation pieces at RT if need be, not knowing Wagner's status.

Insanely rich at RB. All 6 WRs in year 2 of LaFleur's system, further developed. Super deep TE group, loaded with talent and versatility. Freakishly deep DB and OLB groups. DL could use some help, still. Martin & Burks injuries troubling.

Could see adds in the next 24 hours at any of DL, ILB, WR, OT. I fully expect Samuels back on roster by tomorrow. He was my biggest surprise cut.

A couple of the additions I was happiest about were Jonathan Garvin and Randy Ramsey. I think both players will factor heavily in their roles this season. Ramsey has insane length, speed and versatility to drop into coverage. He's a solid pass rusher. Garvin seems to have a knack for getting after a QB with big TFL numbers on his Miami resume. 97 tackles, 26 TFL and 10.5 sacks, 43 run stops, 12 QB hits and 33 QB hurries in just two seasons. He's only 20 years old. That OLB group is TAF. Rock solid rotation.

Thanks for the insight on Yosh. I've been wondering about him since they brought him up from the practice squad last year and just couldn't find out to much about him. He was such an intriguing prospect. It would be a huge win for the Pack if he pans out. Really opens up their draft for 2021 as of now I just keep thinking OT with the first pick.

Thanks again, really good stuff.

Not really surprised about Nijman or Malik Taylor....the only cut that was a bit surprising was Lovett....I would not have exposed him to waivers...SF tried to claim him as well...clearly Gute feels differently....maybe Lovett does not offer enough special teams value...I also was afraid of exposing Lazard to waivers last year...hopefully Malik Taylor will not be the mistake Shepperd was...
Samuels was a little surprising too but clearly Gute believes he will be able to get Samuels to the PS.

Lacy, I seriously think it will be FAR LESS of a factor than many are proclaiming. I believe Matt LaFleur's system will employ a hell of a lot more touches for our incredibly deep TE group of Big Dog, Sternberger, Tonyan and Deguara. We will also see a lot more RB targets in the passing game.

Add in Adams is a rock star, Lazard and MVS sound greatly improved. That alone is going to be huge for this offense. Getting EQ back healthy, and the confidence they have thrown towards Ervin as a versatile feature weapon with speed, and this group looks pretty damned good.

Malik Taylor may surprise all of us, as he's been in system for a full year on PS running scout team work. They know what they have with him, and he's tough.

Lazard becoming more of a feature piece in the offense for a full season will be big for the Packers. His Catch% already eclipsed that of any Davante Adams season last year. Lazard, with progression in that one category will be jumping into Jordy Nelson/Gregg Jennings territory. MVS increasing his into the high 60's or into the 70s will simply be too much for opposing defenses to handle.

Fair. Dude, I was one wanting GB to draft 2 WRs this past draft!

Just really encouraged from what we've heard about Lazard, MVS and EQ and their steady improvement in TC. EQ to a lesser extent, as he was out a bunch. Don't know anything about Ervin as a WR, but I like that his big claim coming out of college was toughness. All of the WRs in this group have that, which will be great to see. No doubt.

From a pure "development" standpoint, I think we are in for a treat this 2020 season.

1. Rashan Gary. I think this kid is going to completely terrorize OL & QBs this season. He has to be our most improved player coming out of TC.

2. MVS. Remarkable work this offseason addressing his ONE NEED: Increasing his Catch%. I'm confident this will carry over into the season.

3. Darnell Savage, Adrian Amos, Kevin King, Jaire Alexander & Chandon Sullivan: Jerry Gray. What more is there to say? The guy will get the absolute most out of these players. I am 100% confident that each and every one of these players will be greatly improved in 2020, and that is going to be fun as hell to watch. Expect an epic pick fest this season from this group.

4. Aaron Jones & Jamaal Williams. All reports point to Williams being another standout in the development area, and both players will benefit greatly from being in Year 2 of Matt LaFleur's system.

5. Tim Boyle. WOW. He also screamed in the development department during TC. He's possibly the best backup QB we've known in GB since the days of Mark Brunell, judging by the reports we've received.

Adams, Burks, and Jackson but I hope at least one turns into a real player. The trouble is, for every late bloomer like Davante, you get five like Quinton Rollins.

Burks was safe as soon as Martin went down. Interesting thing will be is he before or after Summers?

Jackson apparently had a pretty good camp. I don’t see a CB cut that had made an argument to unseat him.

M. Adams I grant is a head scratcher. It is possible that they see him as being worth stashing as a possible in season fill in from IR: there are few around then. Potentially, they could have seen that as a zero cost move since Hester is on IR already it seems and previllon not good enough. As TGR pointed out, he didn’t make it as far as practices, so can’t argue he showed something there, so that’s all I Ccan come up with as a theory.

Been insanely disappointed in both Burks and M. Adams. Both on the verge of being declared 3rd Round busts.

Your point on Adams is pretty sound. Also good to consider Montravius is going to he playing for his NFL life with every snap he gets. I'm looking at him on this roster as just a big space eater, but he had a ton of promise when drafted. If he can crank it up, we all might be surprised.

Would not doubt they drop Adams like a hot rock though if a quality NT or 3-4 DE gets released.

I'm pretty sure Summers is the backup to Kirksey and Burks and Martin play the same position. The 2 ILB positions are much different than people think and are not all that interchangeable. The strong ILB is the playcaller and needs to be great against the run, takes on more OL and be able to not be a liability in coverage. The Weak ILB (Martin and Burks) are more like a 43 Will. They should be able to run sideline to sideline to chase ball carriers and excel in coverage.

Obviously injuries can move a guy like Summers to Weak ILB if need be, but otherwise its a mistake to say the jobs are the same. Summers would be a last resort as the Weak ILB and they might prefer to move Krys Barnes off the PS if needed behind Burks.

RE: Gutey vs Ted. Interesting discussion comparing the two. There's no doubt BG has great respect for Ted, but IMHO, he's a bit different thus far. There is simply no way Ted would have made the moves to acquire the 4 he did in the Spring of 2019, thus spending the cash in FA. Right??!
I do know where you're coming from though in keeping "mistakes" and here it appears Gutey is a little tougher and seems willing to move on. I wish they'd show players like Burks/M. Adams the door though. Personally, we fans don't really know all what goes on, but it's confusing to me how they are keeping Burks around due to his ST play...i think they were going to keep him even if Martin didn't get hurt. From my view, he just doesn't seem to have the skill set to play an effective ILB. Let's all pray Kirksey doesn't get hurt!!

Early in his GM career in GB, Thompson signed Woodson, Pickett and another guy (a Safety who's name I don't recal) in FA to bolster the roster in IIRC his 2nd season as GM. Now early in his career Gutey (again his 2nd season as GM) signed 4 FA that became heavy contributors and in some cases became defensive playmakers. Sure you don't want to reconsider that comment that Thompson wouldn't have signed the Smith's, et all...

Thompson signed Woodson and Pickett as integral parts of his Defense. Gutey signed P and Z Smith along w/ Amos as intergral parts of his Defense.

Playing out earily similarly if you ask me!

I read there comments and to me it comes down to, If we had drafted better, we wouldn't be nit picking so many who can and cant play. St Brown missed all of last year and did zilch the year before and he is a keeper?
Tramon is ready for nursing home and were begging for his return.
Seems what I'm reading is a few early injuries here or there in key areas and this team is in real trouble. You just cant expect your 3,4,5 and 6 round picks to be starters on a playoff bound team.
Last there are a lot of three year hope they mature and show something this year players on this squad.

"Tramon is ready for nursing home and were begging for his return"; IMHO there Payne, i'd disagree here as this insinuates you believe our DBs can't perform as well as the aged TW. Tramon was a great Packer and had a stellar career contribution. Acquiring coach Gray will make a huge difference this year and you have 2 high draft picks holding down the edges. Additionally, i'm excited about the back end as well. Picking up Amos was an immediate improvement and we haven't seen the best from Savage yet.

- Kumerow gone is a good thing. That means that the bottom level for WR increased. I am good with the WR group if preseason hype is true.
- DL is still "Clark and the JAGs". Same group as last year.
- Why is Adams still on the team? Off-field issues and silence during preseason.
- ILB: I have to think that Green is going to be used as much or more than Burks or Summers. Hence, 5 Safeties. Green is ILB/S.
- TEs are also FBs. Perhaps Williams and Dillon see a little FB action too?
- Kirksey: Please stay healthy!

I agree in that Kumerow looked pretty much maxed out. In 2019, after a great camp, he had the chance to emerge out of a nondescript group of backup WR and seize a job. He couldn't do it. I wish him well.

I think Burks will get to fill that Antonio Morrison/BJ Goodson base and early down role in the defense. Someone's gotta do it until Kamal Martin comes back. This is Burks' last best chance.

Would love to see more 2 RB sets with Williams/Jones/Dillon. Two good pass-catchers there and a piledriver.

It's a very strange year after seeing zero preseason play.

Is Burks angry enough to fulfill the Morrison/Goodson role? He doesn't strike me as physical enough.
