Packers Family Night Practice Round-Up. Day 8. August 4, 2018

Injuries, Usage, Formations/Personnel

  • Mike McCarthy confirmed Randall Cobb's injury that kept him out tonight is the same injury he had operated on this summer.  Wood
  • Left guard Lane Taylor was asked about the injury to David Bakhtiari: "I think he said he got his foot caught underneath him. Not 100 percent sure, but I’m sure he’ll be fine."  Cohen
  • Kyle Murphy has been taking mostly left tackle reps with second team in camp. Wood
  • Undrafted rookie Tim Boyle got the second QB reps in the team period and now in the pass-under-pressure period. Demovsky
  • Bakhtiari removed his left cleat and sock, hopping on cart now. They're taking him to the locker room.  Wood  MM said it is his left ankle, but didn’t know extent.
  • Bell leaves again after a rep or two. His back doesn't look right.  Wood
  • Kentrell Brice is jogging out - not practicing.  Packer Report
  • Undrafted rookie free agent quarterback Tim Boyle has come in after Aaron Rodgers -- and before Hundley and Kizer -- in the past two periods, a team period and a pass-under-pressure period. McCarthy giving him a chance to show what he can do on the Family Night Stage.  Now it's DeShone Kizer who came in with the 2s after Rodgers on this team period. So don't read too much into it, I suppose. Wilde
  • Kevin King, Davon House, Tramon Williams and Jermaine Whitehead were the CBs in dime. Cohen

Actual Plays: WRs/Pass Defense/QBs/RBs

  • Just a couple yards, but nice, one-handed grab from TE Marcedes Lewis. The vet has hands, er, hand.  And then on the next snap, Lewis lets a high pass from Tim Boyle slip through his hands. Wood
  • Josh Jackson flagged. Recurring theme early in camp.  Nagler
  • Great close on the football from Herb Waters. I finally have tape of Waters playing cornerback and I’m very happy.  Herman
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling is having himself a night so far. Nice hands catch for first down on comeback route against Donatello Brown.  Wood
  • Valdes-Scantling drops a mini hail mary.  Packer Report
  • I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen from Oren Burks tonight. He’s been all over the place.  Herman
  • Kizer just barely missed rookie J'Mon Moore on go route down left side. Looked like it should've been caught. Moore had a step on Jaire Alexander.  Wood
  • Jake Kumerow continues to run impressive routes. Beat Jaire Alexander on a slant and turned Demetri Goodson around with a hard cut outside.  Silverstein
  • Matched against Tramon Williams, WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling just caught a third-down pass from Aaron Rodgers. Good separation on out route.  Wood
  • Another questionable throw by Kizer. They called this PI which is equally as questionable. Pretty solid coverage by Jackson.  Herman
  • WR Jake Kumerow continued to shine during one-on-one drills. Really good route runner, he's put moves on everyone from Tramon Williams and Jaire Alexander to Demetri Goodson and Quinten Rollins in camp.  Wood
  • Davante Adams just put a wicked shimmy to an inside route, leaving CB Kevin King standing still near end zone.  Wood
  • Jermaine Whitehead had several free runs at the QB tonight. Sneaky little blitzer from the slot.  Kruse
  • Ty Montgomery bowled over Kendall Donnerson on a run play.  Cohen
  • Initial read not there, nice coverage by Hawkins (I believe) but Kizers footwork here is horrible. Got to keep the feet active. Once his initial throw wasn’t there he was toast.  Kizer then threw a fastball off the fingertips of Marcedes Lewis on a short out.  Cohen
  • Kumerow with a TD catch in one on ones vs. Quinten Rollins. Kumerow continues to impress. Ran a very nice 9 route and gained solid separation. J’Mon Moore can’t get away from Goodson and has the ball ricochet off his hands. MVS - draws a PI from Josh Hawkins.  Herman
  • A couple nice reps for CB Josh Hawkins, who forced a WR out of bounds and also had a PBU.  Geronimo Allison had a sweet move on Tramon Williams for a short TD. Jaire Alexander with a textbook PBU on J'Mon Moore in the end zone.  Cohen
  • Yancey toasts Goodson but the ball had a bit too much zip and was high and Yancey couldn’t haul it in.  Herman
  • Nice recognition from Montgomery on blitz pickup, but he needs to finish and stop that safety [Whitehead] in his tracks. Nagler  Rodgers got bumped on the play.

Special Teams

  • From the 50: 6 punts, average hang time of 4.56 seconds, average yard line downed at the 12.1 (with one touchback).  From the 35: 2 punts, 45.5 yards, 4.3 average hang time. Demovsky
  • Punts by JK Scott from the 50-yard line: 1) 36 yards to the 14, 4.54;  2) 43 yards to the 7, 4.31; 3) 39 yards to the 11, 4.56; 4) 35 yards to the 15, 4.44;  5) 43 yards to the 7, 4.53; 6) Touchback, 4.93. Punts from the 35-yard line: 1) 55 yards, 4.72;  2) 42 yards, 3.85. Cohen

OL/DL:

  • Montravius Adams has looked really good tonight. Granted, he's going against backup offensive linemen, but he's been in the backfield a lot on passing plays.  Cohen
  • Montravius Adams blows past Day for a sack.  Packer Report
  • Montravius Adams looks like an entirely new player this year. Dillon Day followed this poor effort up with another rough play and a holding penalty.  Herman
  • Justin McCray continues to pass the eye test at right guard. Had some really good reps against Wilkerson and Lowry with the one.  Hodkiewicz
  • Reggie Gilbert beat Jason Spriggs bad on the right side. Would've crushed Hundley. Wood
  • Chris Odom just beat Byron Bell clean off the line on a speed rush. Forced Rodgers to get rid of it early.  Nagler
  • Kenny Clark immediate penetration in the backfield for a tfl.  Herman
  • Reggie Gilbert had a great move to blow Jason Spriggs out of the water for what would have been a sack.  Cohen
  • Matthews just toasted Kyle Murphy who is in at LT for Bakhtiari. Herman
  • With Bakhtiari hurt, this is probably a bad time to mention that Spriggs, Murphy, and Bell all really struggled at tackle tonight, which, if you’ve ever seen any of their tape at tackle should be of no surprise whatsoever. Tackle depth is a nightmare right now.  Herman

This round-up was interesting since it is the first one that saw the action on the field so I can compare that to the take of the beat writers.

I've noticed that Andy Herman and Cohen tend to tweet about the OL and DL (not that they don't tweet about other things - Cohen usually provides info about each punt, for example).

The Kumerow love comes from about four different beat writers, Cohen, Herman, Silverstein, and Wilde, IIRC.

Nagler doesn't sugar-coat problems. I went through the twitter accounts of Wood, Demovsky, Nagler, Cohen, Silverstein, and Wilde before I found a tweet on Herb Waters' nice PBU by Herman. Goodson had a number of plays, some good and some bad, but not much in the way of tweets. These are just based on my memory - I do try to not duplicate plays too often unless someone adds something new.

TGR, I continue to love these snippets you're collecting. This is a great addition to the CHTV articles. Between this and Andrew Herman's film breakdowns it's a lot easier for me to get a feel for what's happening In Wisconsin from way out here in Tucson. It's very helpful and much appreciated.

Thanks. It really is just grunt work, just clerical work. I try not put bias in the articles (I leave my opinion in the comments). I actually include almost every tweet. An omission equals bias as well. Well, I did omit that Alex Light had returned to practice. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure but I think Light is an OL.

"Kentrell Brice is jogging out"

Jogging is good sign. He'll be back sooner than later

I've watched Herb Waters in past years dating back to when he was a WR, as I have a history of going to the practices in person. One thing that has always struck me about Waters is he would always make some plays, but it never really turned out to be enough. He has been with the team long enough and made enough noise now that he's getting some attention, but will this year be the year he finally does enough? I'm predicting no to be honest, but lets wait and see. No reason to root against a guy.

Nice to see Kumerow and MVS doing well. And Adams. Would be really nice to have Cole Madison right about now.

I can't lie, I had more than one tear in my eye. 13th Lombardi Packer in the HOF! Great speech by a great player. Grongrats Jerry 50 years overdue.

I watched only sporadic bits of the Family Night practice on the television broadcast (digestive napping got in the way of a full, cohesive viewing ;) ) but early on Equinemeous St. Brown caught more than a few balls, which made me happy because I'm pulling for the guy, I think he's got a ton of talent. Surprised there wasn't a single tweet about him.

Agreed. ESB continued to catch passes. Seems to me I saw him catch some passes on crossers later, with Larry (or Wayne) noting that the QBs love to throw that ball to him due to his catch radius. They seemed fixated on that, but while ESB is over 6'5", Kumerow is over 6'4", MVS is 6'4", and Moore is 6'3".

They grabbed three tall, fast, and big-bodied WR's this draft. Keep in mind any difference in "catch radius" may be arm length, hand size, or simply athletic ability. Kumerow has been lightning in a bottle thus far, too, making a crowded room even more uncomfortable. Someone around here before camp started was high on Kumerow. Might have been White Tornado? They were onto something with this kid. I have a feeling the Packers are going to keep extra WRs this season. Seriously tough cuts to come.

King got beat a few times, and he's starting to make me nervous. My opinion of Rollins is going downhill pretty quickly. Valdes-Scantling is dropping a lot of passes. JK Scott is a future All-Pro. I think Ty Montgomery is looking pretty good, and I liked what I saw in pass-protection. Yancey seems underrated right now, too. My confidence in Hundley is also continuing to drop dramatically. He looks like the worst QB out there at times. I wasn't a big fan of the reporter attacking the OL depth, because OL play (and even DL play) is incredibly difficult to judge at this point. Play can be very misleading without the physical contact, so I'm going to wait until the preseason to see what guys have learned.

Marcedes Lewis is much better in the pass than I expected, and I expect TE to be a much bigger position this year than people have been projecting. Imagine something like 2 WR (Adams, Cobb), 2 TE (Graham, Lewis), and 1 RB (Montgomery). That's a lot of options. I wouldn't be surprised with more running next year than people expect.
