Packers Draft Special: Packers Big Board 3.0
By Ross Uglem
Here's the absolute latest national mock. This one is from Albert Breer of the MMQB. This particular mock draft has four quarterbacks, a running back, a guard and a 1T defensive lineman. Those are seven guys that the Packers just aren't going to be interested in. Two traditional off-the-ball linebackers go ahead of Green Bay in this simulation as well. If you've been paying attention to the way the Packers draft, they're not interested in that position, either. That brings the grand total to nine. So what does that all mean?
It means that the Packers should have the opportunity to select one of the top five players on their board, regardless of the fact that they pick at number 14 overall. Look below for a Packers top 150 to use for the next month or so. I'll release one last edition of this list prior to draft week in April, but for now there is very little data to continue to gather. The film is the film, the combine is done and pro days are slowly being completed.

Risers
- EDGE, WR and CB. After rectifying the TE position and making the defensive line a juggernaut, the Packers have "holes" at edge, wide receiver and CB. While I'm not as worried about these spots as a lot of Packers fans are (especially at EDGE), the team needs are the team needs.
- Sam Hubbard- Hubbard's combine numbers forced a re-watch of his tape. A good showing at his pro day tomorrow could slide him up, even above Davenport for me.
Sam Hubbard highlights the next Rob Ninkovich? pic.twitter.com/CwEgyb5wXI
— Brett (@BrettPats) March 4, 2018
- Mike Gesicki- another "back to the tape" guy.
Little bit of Mike Gesicki. pic.twitter.com/6gj87EQ96x
— Ty Wurth (@WurthDraft) March 7, 2018
- Derwin James - He's such a special player. He could be a defense changer in Green Bay.
- Uchenna Nwosu and Ogbo Okoronkwo- both of these guys could be ideal fits as multiple weapons in Pettine's defense. The offseason (so far) makes it look like for the second consecutive season the Packers will target a cornerback with their first selectino. That makes these two good looks in the second round.

Fallers
- DL - they just don't need to address the position. I could maybe be talked into a backup 1T, but that's about it. Don't forget they used a top 100 pick on Montravius Adams just a season ago.
- Orlando Brown - I just know how they feel about unathletic offensive linemen. There is certainly a point in which he presents value, I just can't believe it would be as a Green Bay Packer
- DJ Chark - workout warrior
- Calvin Ridley - testing numbers aren't where they need to be to take him at 14, which is where you'd need to take him.

I disagree with Landry-too high, Barkley-way too low, Gallup-tooooo high, and Nelson too low. I'm looking at tape on Rashaan Evans and think he's a more polished version of Edmunds as a LB. Just don't know his medical and background comparisons.

There are some parallels between how people have started to talk about Landry and how they regarded Derek Barnett from last year's draft. Barnett was not a world-beater his first year, but he was a key piece in winning an SB. Not going to discount Landry...

Based on his prominence on Ross's board combined with many mocks putting him in the back half of the first to even the second round , the Pack will be selecting Landry with the 14th pick since he should be available.
This should free-up your late April Thursday night.

Aaron Nagler interviewed Justis Mosqueda this week. Mosqueda's take on Landry put him exactly where this article does. In fact, he puts him ahead of Chubb. Give it a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s3-aJTkKzc&index=5&list=PL2eP2xQjvL02oJ...

It would be great if the Packers could get Derwin James and Roquan Smith with their first 2 picks. They have plenty of picks to trade if they need to. Thanks, Since '61

I'd be on board with either one of those but especially James. My "Draft Crush" right now is James Washington in the 2nd. Even if the Packers have to move up to get him I'd be in favor as long as it's not to much.
Washington is being compared to Greg Jennings which was enough for me to take a closer look. The Packers NEED at WR is just as great as any other position. Cobb is most likely gone after this season so who's left for our $30 million dollar a year QB to throw to? When you consider how long it takes most Packers WR to "Get It" and earn Rodgers trust, WR is a HUGE need this season.
Thompson drafted Jennings, Jones, and then Nelson in consecutive drafts from 2006 through 2008. He actually took another in 2005 (Murphy) but he was injured. My point is WR was just another position Thompson IGNORED and is now a position that must be restocked.

Nick - James Washington would be a great pick in the second round for the Packers. If he is still available they should snap him up. I would not mind if they traded up for him as well. I agree with you that he could be a game break WR for the Packers. Thanks, Since '61

I agree that they need help at CB, but why don't you think that they need help at EDGE? To me, that position looks just as bad or worse.... (not that this is saying much)

I've said a number of times that I like both Gilbert and Biegel. Thought Biegel should have been a second round pick last year. Matthews and Perry as OLBs1 and Gilbert and Biegel as OLBs2 is not the best group in the NFL but Pettine has done more with less. I think it's an average EDGE group and most Packers fans think it is in the bottom 8 or so in the league.

Most Packers fans seem to think every position group is in the bottom 8 in the league. WE'RE IN CRISIS!!
I hope we get a ''difference maker'' at 14 - whatever position that is. Going to be a fun draft this year.

I agree, I think BPA, no matter the position, at 14 will be a difference maker.

I think 7 would have made anyone’s playcalling look stale.
Furthermore; a stretch play featuring Barry Sanders or Saquon Barkely is a lot less “stale” than the same playcall featuring Eric Torkelson or Paul Ott Carruth.

True Ross,
But are you including the injury histories of CM3, Perry and Biegel in there? Gilbert should have been playing more all year, but Fackrell sucks.
I guess I'm just thinking of CM3 and Perry as 1 enormously expensive player at this point - even though they have completely different skill sets. I'm just assuming they will be around for 16/32 games played, cumulatively.
Ross Uglem
March 21, 2018 at 02:39 pm
Yes I am. You're actually being quite overly pessimistic. Over the last four seasons, Perry has been available for 86% of Green Bay's games. Matthews has been available for 91% including two 16 game seasons. The idea that those two would miss 16/32 games is incredibly unlikely. Yes Biegel has been injured during his career, but injuries are a lot more random than most fans think they are. My plan moving forward doesn't include Fackrell on the edge. I'd be surprised if Pettine's does.
Bearmeat
March 21, 2018 at 02:44 pm
Ok, fine "available." Meaning, they play. What about "available and effective?" By October 1st, CM3 and Perry have rarely had games where they were effective because they don't operate well at less than 100%.
To me, that looks patently obvious.
Ross Uglem
March 21, 2018 at 02:51 pm
I'll agree with you on Matthews. He slows down quite a bit when less than 100%, Perry doesn't. A lot of his best work has come with a club on his hands. They're still average, no worse, in my opinion.
It's not like I don't want them to add pass rush. My #1 overall player for the Packers is an edge rusher. It's just not a huge deal if they don't address it until they grab someone like Nwosu or Okoronkwo or even Touray later on.
Ross Uglem
March 21, 2018 at 02:52 pm
also, I expect improved production from the group moving from Capers to Pettine. Capers did very little to maximize his defense's talents. Pettine does it all the time.
Bearmeat
March 21, 2018 at 02:55 pm
We're all counting on that. We don't have a top 10 defense personnel wise, and we almost surely won't by September..... but we could have a top 20 defense personnel wise and if we have top 5 coaching, and a little luck with health (for once) that would catapult us to top 10.

March 21, 2018 at 02:53 pm
Ok. I disagree with you. But I see your point. It's just a matter of perspective then.

Ross Uglem
March 21, 2018 at 02:54 pm
There would definitely have to be a trade up. With that said, Landry and James could be Gute's Raji and Matthews. You just never know.
GB Jacker
March 21, 2018 at 03:03 pm
Being above average - however slightly - often/usually gets you ludicrously well paid in the NFL. CM3 earned his dollars being an All-Pro mind you (probably no longer doping would be my guess)
Ross Uglem
March 21, 2018 at 03:10 pm
"overpaid" is not a huge deal. Matthews is on an expiring deal. He's not going to make as much as he was. Perry's deal is right in line with what it would cost to replace his production in today's market I promise. Also, it's not hindering anything they do. They have about $19M to work with (still) in 2018, $47M in 2019 and $100M in 2020. The Perry/Matthews contracts are not affecting the financials of the team and their contracts definitely don't affect whether it's smart (or not) to draft an EDGE in a high spot.

Bear I consider the rampant downvoter the "twin city troll". Take the votes as a badge of honor that you are annoying a troll.
Ross, etc. Have you considered the effect that Mo will have for CM3 and NP? Julius Peppers aided both of these players by providing that third "elephant" rusher. I wonder if the Packers were exposed last year by Brooks' injuries and the step down to Rookies (Fackrell and Biegal) - no aspersions on Biegal here though (Year1 rookie coming off injuries).

"My plan moving forward doesn't include Fackrell on the edge."
I've always argued that Fackrell either belonged on the weak side in a 4-3 or inside in a 3-4. I think he's miscast on the outside in a 3-4.
When you say your plan moving forward doesn't include him on the edge, is it that you'd put him someplace else in the scheme or put him off the roster altogether?

OG? If I'm worried about the OL, it's not G I'm focusing on.
Most of last season, the OL was held together by our bottom tier OG's- often playing out of position, even at tackle, sometimes with only a few days to prepare.. and while it wasn't pretty, they battled and generally got it done.
Now, right tackle? That's a position to be worried about. Even if Bulaga can play opening weekend.. How long can he do it? Need to find the RT of the future, now.

The advantage of teams overspending on FA corners now is decreasing their likelihood of drafting them. We should be able to get some quality (and hopefully quantity) DB this draft.
dobber
March 21, 2018 at 04:33 pm
That doesn't mean that another team with a glaring need at CB won't try to jump ahead of the Packers--who everyone can clearly see needs DB help--to get a sliding CB. If the draft were today, the Packers are an obvious target to jump over for a sliding DB. It may all but force the Packers to move up if they see a chance to get a DB they covet.

OK, so here's my burning question....
If Barkley is there at 14 - do/should the Packers take him?
I hear he's an athletic freak of quickness and strength, the likes of which have never been seen before. Incredibly strong which implies durability. I say you almost have to take him if he's there.
Colin_C
March 21, 2018 at 03:25 pm
For sure. I wouldn't think twice, unless Bradley Chubb was there also. Then it's a bit harder decision. Barkley is better than both the last two backs to go in the top 5.
Finwiz
March 21, 2018 at 03:34 pm
I'd love to know how the Packers rate these players.
If Chubb = Barkley in overall rating, of course you take Chubb.
But if he's slated to go at 7, is it likely he falls to 14?
RB's aren't as important as they once were, but everyone values edge rushers to negate a passing game. The thing with Barkley is, you solve your return problems as well.

As long as we're just dreaming, the guy that I'd really love to see unexpectedly fall is Quenton Nelson. I'd like that much better than Barkley. Plug him in for Jahri Evans and he's an all pro day one and for the next decade. He's what we HOPED Mandarich would be. Honestly his game kind of reminds me of Mandarich, while Mandarich was still on the juice at Mich. State. I don't know if I've ever seen anyone serve up so many pancakes. He just embarrassed dudes. I think he's a pure guard, not a tackle, but that's OK. He's that good. But like I said, "As long as we're just dreaming..."
In fact, I don't expect it, but it wouldn't knock me off my chair if GB picked a lower tier guy like Williams or McGlinchey or some other of OL at #14.

I get that Nelson is a special case. I hope he goes top 10, before the Packers pick, to resist the temptation they draft him.
Just say "no" to OG at 14.
Finwiz
March 22, 2018 at 09:51 am
No way they'e going to draft a guard.
Plugging him in for Evans says he's a guard and won't be moved to tackle.
1st round guard - never happen.
One mock has him going at number 5.
marpag1
March 22, 2018 at 09:20 am
Yeah, Nelson's a guard. I thought everyone knew that, but just in case, my post above said, "I think he's a pure guard." I also think that I have never seen any mock draft or player evaluation that had him lasting beyond Chicago at #8. But guards can slip. You never know.
If we are talking about Nelson, the Packers would be nuts to pass on him if he is around at 14.
If we are talking about the Packers taking one of the other guards at 14, I said, "I don't expect it." And personally, I wouldn't do it.

Nelson would be really hard to pass up. I'd have to think Ward or Davenport will be long-time All-Pros before I'd pass on Nelson. I'd definitely take Nelson over Jackson, need be damned.

Yeah, you're right, in retrospect, Barkley is just dreaming.
I got swayed by this article, an article I don't understand at all, showing him at 8. I don't get what I'm looking at here.
So the Packers told the writer what their top 150 player draft board looks like? LOL - yeah sure.
I've read this article 3x and I still have no clue what it's saying.

just because a 16 beat a one doesn't mean barkley is falling out of top ten, dream on. question is whether or not he's worth an entire draft class? i think its an honest question. i wouldn't do it, unless ex-packers in cleveland felt like giving us a going away present at 4th pick( i think giants take him at 2 anyway)

For anyone that's interested, I compressed these numbers into a summary.
Unfortunately formatting didn't let me post a table (or I haven't worked out how yet).
But I summarized the total number of players in this Big Board according to the total number per listed position group, as well as the average position of the top 5 people in that group (in order to gauge the relative depth of that group). Note that not all groups have 5 people, so take their average with a grain of salt.
Interestingly, Edge has 23 people in this top 150 BigBoard with an average rank of the top 5 being 10. This is different to other BigBoards which have Edge as significantly weaker?
CB has 19 representatives with an Top5 avg of 13
WR is also well represented with 20 players at an average rank of number 20.
According to this board, this doesn't look like the draft to find your All-Pro O-lineman or Tackle outside of the top couple of picks.
Position Group
Total Per PG
Average Position of top 5 in PG
CB 19 13
DB 6 84
DB / LB 1 2
DL 13 35
DT 2 68
EDGE 23 10
EDGE/DL 1 104
IOL 5 106
LB 14 59
LB / EDGE 2 43
OG 2 83
OL 4 40
OT 6 56
QB Count 8 45
RB Count 12 43
S Count 3 77
TE Count 9 41
WR Count 20 20

the EDGE thing is because I think they need to take one or two of them in total. I'd like to see Fackrell replaced and I'd like to see Odom replaced. Keep in mind this board is skewed towards Green Bay's needs.

March 21, 2018 at 05:27 pm
Ahhh. got it. thanks for the clarification.
I might do the same for some of the standard BigBoards and see how they compare.
FWIW I agree with the Kyler Fackrell analysis. Regrettably for him he's had his chances and not been able to develop into that third EDGE impact player.
I posted previously that Mo - if he remains healthy - will undoubtedly provide some of that 'elephant' edge rush capability that Julius Peppers provided in order to take the heat off CM3 and NP. I'm wondering if Lorenzo Carter can't be that developmental prospect in the draft for that role
Colin_C

Definitely disagree with some of the placement here, but to each his own. From the film I've watched, here's my board through 14 right now.
1. Saquon Barkley
2. Bradley Chubb
3. Derwin James
4. Quenton Nelson
5. Tremaine Edmunds
6. Denzel Ward
7. Minkah Fitzpatrick
8. Marcus Davenport
9. Roquan Smith
10. Calvin Ridley
11. Joshua Jackson
12. Harold Landry
13. Mike McGlinchey
14. Leighton Vander Esch
I think this draft class is way better on the defensive side in the early rounds. Not really sold on any of the QB's either. I'm sure at least one of the top 4 will be a stud, but I have no idea which one (haven't really watched much film on them). I love the CB class, but it's deep enough where you can still get a great player in the second, so it pushes some excellent players down the board.

Your missing Vita Vea. Esch I would take before Davenport. And I'll bet they would take Davenport before Landry.
Colin_C
March 21, 2018 at 05:50 pm
Yeah, he probably deserves a spot in there. Maybe I'd swap him out for McGlinchey. I just haven't watched enough tape to form an opinion on Vita yet.
I have been on and off the Davenport train for a while, but I think I'm firmly on it now. He's inconsistent in his technique, but did dominate his level of competition, regardless of what the stat sheet shows. Like Vita, he looked like a man among boys. I think he has a higher upside than Chubb, Key, or Landry. Edmunds is close, but he's been at MLB mostly, so we haven't gotten to see him rush as much. I'd be perfectly fine with Davenport at 14 if he lasts until then. Landry worries me because of his run defense. You won't be a Von Miller or Khalil Mack if you can't stay on the field to stop the run.

The VanderEsch/Landry/Davenport trio is a conundrum. I think all three will be good pros, with VDE having the most-likely success/"highest floor" and Davenport having the most potential/"highest ceiling." I see them as similar to these former Packers: VanderEsch = Clay Matthews, Davenport = "poor man's" Julius Peppers, Landry = Kabeer Baja-Biamila.

March 21, 2018 at 08:54 pm
I like your list way more than that of Ross, though I'm not sold on Ridley or Jackson as befitting a #14. I prefer Fitzpatrick over Ward, now that Burnett is gone; I'd put Fitzpatrick at Free Safety and move Ha-Ha to Strong Safety.
Colin_C
March 21, 2018 at 09:29 pm
I'm not 100% sold on Jackson either, but he's one of my high upside guys. That said, I would definitely rather trade back for him verses picking him at 14.
I don't get the hate for Ridley though (not specially from you, but a lot of people don't like him). He's one of, if not the best deep threat in the draft, which we desperately need. He also never had a good QB to throw him the ball. Is he perfect? Of course not. But as it stands, I see him as the best WR in the draft, with room to grow (literally and figuratively).
I also see Fitz fitting best as a FS, with Dix up front. As a prospect, I'm just not as hyped on him as everyone else. I just see him benefiting a lot from the talent around him. Give me Derwin James any day.

If there are good players deep into the first round I am cool with trading down. But I really cannot determine "good value" at a certain spot. If the team and scouts think that is the case then I am all for trading down a bit if the right offer comes in. QB's every year seem to push good players down the draft board so maybe a gem falls to the team. If not then why not trade back down perhaps with The Bills and pick up two first rounders that one of which we might have picked up at 14 anyway?

Fast LBs are key to neutralizing mobile QBs, which are all the rage in the NFL. When Kaepernick was destroying the Packers in that ugly playoff loss, it was mostly because the LBs lacked the speed to handle him, IMO.
I have been waiting for really last LB upgrades ever since. I'm still waiting.

Edmunds . Fast Linebacker , good instincts , big, aggressive and it's been said can be Edge in Pettine's D different sub packages . Said to be washed out for being over aggressive . That can be coached out . Has been compared to Myles Jack . Linebacker ? yes . Edge ? Yes .

Nice work Ross, enjoy the draft articles very much. One note of caution. What we fans think, and what the brain trust are 1265 thinks are two very different things. So we should not be surprised if this draft turn to be something going in directions unexpected. One aspect that is often overlooked, is how the NFL rules affect draft and player development. For the past couple of years DB have become gold in this league based on the rule changes. That distorts how teams may draft, even if they have no need for that position. With TT in the background whispering into the young Packers GM ear, this draft could become very interesting for us fans. Looking forward to it.

My current top 14:
1. Barkley 2. Chubb 3. Fitzpatrick 4. James
5. Nelson (as G now and RT later) 6. Davenport
7. VanderEsch 8. Edmunds 9. Landry 10. Bryan
11. Vea 12. Ward 13-14. TRADE DOWN!
p.s. Putting VanderEsch at 84 makes me ignore the rest of your rankings. He is incredibly quick and decisive and hard-hitting and one of the best athletes in the draft; look how he compares to your #1:
VanderEsch-6'4", 256#, 4.65 40, 6.88 3-cone, 22 bench
Landry- 6'2", 251#, 4.64 40, 6.88 3-cone, 24 bench
Davenport- 6'6", 4.58 40, 7.2 3-cone, 22 bench
Chubb- 6'4", 269#, 4.65 40, 7.37 3-cone, ? bench
Edmunds- 6'4", 253#, 4.54 40, ? 3-cone, 19 bench

I'm going to keep saying it: VanderEsch is going to be another Clay Matthews. Even his history is similar: came in "too skinny," didn't get to play much until his senior year, knocked it out of the park as a senior and at the Combine, was off "prognosticator's" radar until just before the draft, etc.

My two cents says Russ Ball will call the shots based on salary demands per position. I'm convinced after this FA fiasco and again letting talent leave that Russ runs the show and our GM's are just that in name only and in no way function like GM's on other teams.
Ask yourself what is the cheapest positions to fill in round one and two and you get your answer pretty quick that edge rusher is going to be out, and possibly Corner Back, but a so so ILB may be in play for 14 and a Lineman for first pick at two.
Right now its a dumpster fire team with holes everywhere.

Tough to project what the Packers will do in the draft without knowing what areas Pettine feels are a priority for his defense to be effective.
If it was up to me, I would prioritize helping our $100 million player be as safe & effective as possible early (OT & WR) and then go after defensive players in the middle and later rounds.

Ot - Baluga, Always hurt. Past #1 who never was an All- Pro. I think it's time to move on. But I can't see trying to draft another Baluga early. They must play Spriggs. The Wrs this year are all late 1s and early second picks. If the packers don't trade up, forget Wr. Rd. 2. A lot of mistakes can be made with that second pick. The packers need a leader on defense. Gute is at the georgia pro day. If he doesn't go after R. Smith he has rocks in his head. The defense replacements are in georgia! And a very nice G in Wynn.

Glad to see Courtland Sutton in this Top 10. I really believe he'd be incredible in our offense. A Terrell Owens type WR who is compared to Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall. Not the speed utility that I think we need to diversify with, but I'd like more than just Sutton out of this draft. Had he run a half a second faster he'd be much higher than he is. That guy is almost 6'3 and half, has huge hands, and had a faster 10 yard split than DJ Moore, who has small hands. Sutton's 3 cone is other worldly.
Sutton would be such a great complement for Adams and just a big stud of a player for our offense. It'll bother me to see him go off with another team which he very well could right in front of my face here in Dallas. He has been compared to Dez Bryant as well as Alshon and Brandon Marshall. Dez may be cut any minute in Dallas and Sutton is the hometown boy who would love to stay here. Just a great, great, kid. I love the guy.
We all have our opinions and mine is he'd dominate for us especially with YAC. Guy is so smooth, strong and elusive. All those screens we used to throw that didn't work well would be his bread and butter. He'd also be another big target for the RZ. Doesn't separate but he doesn't need to. I think he could be a homerun hitter for us, too.
