Pre-Order The Pro Football Draft Preview Today!!

Packers Draft Special: Packers Big Board 1.0

I had the good fortune of interviewing Cheesehead TV's co-founder Aaron Nagler on Bison 1660 (Fargo)'s airwaves last week.  One of the things we agreed upon was just how good of shape the Packers are in holding the 14th overall pick.

By the way, give that a listen, it's a pretty great Packers conversation.  My boss at 1660 gives me a ton of leeway.

The reason that they're in such good shape is because they actually have the two positions in tow that you need to really be good in this league for a long time (thanks, Ted).  QB and left tackle are set in Green Bay for the foreseeable future.  Green Bay's needs don't match up with the teams in the top half of the draft, but that's the kind of wild and crazy stuff that can happen when a roster designed around a Hall of Fame QB loses that QB.

What exactly do I mean by this?   Let's just take a look at ESPN legend (and potential I-got-caught-with-my-hand-in-the-cookie-jar-guy) Mel Kiper's 1st round mock.  Green Bay won't be taking a QB, an RB (Aaron Jones da gawd) or a left tackle.  Kiper has four QBs, one OT, Quenton Nelson (a guard that Green Bay could plug in at RG for the next decade, but won't be around for them to pick), and Saquon Barkley gone before the Packers pick.  That's seven players that Green Bay wasn't going to draft anyway.  In a way of looking at it, the Packers have a shot to take the 7th best guy on their board (according to Kiper's mock, which isn't really even a rankings system).

So what does a Packers specific board look like?  Let's check it out below.  The rules here are simple.  If I'm making a pick in a vacuum (have signed no other free agents, haven't drafted anyone before this player), I'm taking guy 36 before I'm taking guy 37.  This is based on both my evaluation of the player, and the Packers need for that player.  This board absolutely will move around.  I have not had a ton of time to really get into film on this class.  This is based off of conversations, watching college games live this season and rankings of people that I actually trust.  I'll also have it worked up all the way to 150 prospects once I get deeper into the film because the Packers do have those 9 picks in the first five rounds.  They should be able to select from their (not my) top 150 the whole way through.

As we get to the full 150 and you're watching the draft, feel free to cross off guys on the Packers board, not the generic one used for every team.  That's what we're about at Cheesehead TV, and specifically with the Cheesehead TV draft guide, whicih I'm incredibly psyched to contribute to again.

So, going by Kiper's mock, the Packers would be able to take my #3 player on their board, Josh Jackson at 14.  That is tremendous, tremendous value.

I like this availability logic when viewing the draft and our 14th pick. There should be a real stud come our selection. This is Gutenkunst first pick and I am hoping his tenure starts out well.

Ultimately, I would like to see a solid corner, stud pass rusher and another collapse the pocket big man come out of this draft for the Packers. After that, sprinkle in a good TE and O-line depth. Beyond that, make sure the rest of the picks are fast and trainable.

If there is a “generational talent” (I believe that is the current hot term for a great player) at 14 (or at any spot) GB has to take him regardless of position.
In 2006 Chester Taylor rushed for over 1,200 yards for MN. In 2007, MN took Adrian Peterson at #7. Was that a mistake since they didn’t “need”a running back? Pains me to say it, but, I think not!
At 14, if the next Jerry Rice is there, you take him. Same for the next Reggie White, Jim Brown, Anthony Munoz, Lester Hayes, LT (either one, RB or OLB), etc etc.
If GB comes away from #14 with a player who really kicks tail, I promise not to whine, no matter where on the field he kicks said tail from.

Two positions, QB and LT, ok.
I’d say the next two are CB and pass rush. And in those two, GB is...less than all set.

Vita Vea. Please. Our D-line would be amazing. None of the edge rushers that'll be sitting there at 14 are better than him.

I don’t disagree with you. What I will say, though is that Green Bay’s base is a nickel package. They’ll play that more often than not. To get Vea on the field you must remove Clark or Daniels. Not a solution I’m looking for with a once in a decade chance to pick in the top 15.

To be fair, GB's base defense "was" a nickel. We don't really know yet how Pettine will line his guys up.
Pettine may use more 3 DL on the field at a time then Capers used to.

He did say that the league has shifted to more of a Nickel style of defense, and that he likes to have 2 OLB's. But he didn't say anything about DL.

Also he said that he adjusts his scheme to the players he does have. Meaning, that if they were to draft Vea, he along with Clark and Daniels would be 3 of the best players on the defense.

Do I see this happening, no, probably not. Just saying its a possibility.

Yes I too wonder what the effect of a perpetually collapsing pocket caused by a dominant D-line would have for opposing quarterbacks - as opposed to over-reliance on the secondary.

It's probably stating the obvious, but if one area is obscenely dominant (D-Line) then the opportunities MUST open up for the EDGE and Secondary

Vita has played everywhere along the DL. He's very versatile for such a big man. If either Clark or Daniels go out, what is the solution? You can never have enough good big men. (We have 2.) The LIons Blew us out. Bet the new DL coach moves Adams and Lowrey around. Can't go wrong with another Grave Digger!

OK - Were good at QB. Cross them Off. TE. - Not good enough for any in the top two rounds. Cross them off. Re address this 3rd Comps.(MAYBE) Rb- Cross them off. To many other BPAs needed. Wr.= Gallop has trouble locating the deeper pass. Cross them off. These are the two I would draft later: 1. DJ CHAULK 2. Daurice Fountain . Both will be perfect replacements given time. ( 3 rd Picks) I don't believe any OL will be taken. He must be a steal and BPA like Bulaga. Cross them off and draft the OLs in the 4th. That leaves Defense. DE's To small with the exception of Davenport. He's not a pass rusher but does have a bull rush. Cross DEs off. CBS. BPA ONLY HERE. BUT I WOULD TAKE DERWIN JAMES FIRST. STILL CROSS THEM OFF. Right now I would take Phillps and Vita before Davenport. Doubt packers will draft either. But would love Vita! ( No ? marks here.) Just a Football player. Last LBs. This is where the packers should draft from your list. 1 OLB and 1 ILB/OLB! Edmunds is the #1 pure OLB. Key and Landry have issues. I want the sure Football Player. Take Edmunds. Rd. 1 Smith should be gone. Evans, and Jefferson I would not CROSS OFF! For the 2nd rd. (Even ESCH. )

I don't think you can list any position as one that's off the board. If Baker Mayfield is there at 14, and he's the BPA on your board, then you have to consider taking him. Farve was the same age as Rodgers is currently when we drafted that QB out of Cal. The patriots just traded away a young franchise QB to protect their aging current one. I'd love a first round pick that contributes his first year just as much as anyone, but you always have to look at the future as well. That said, I doubt there will be a QB worth taking at 14.

There's no TE's I've seen that I would take at 14. Barkley's the only RB I would, and no way does he fall to us. In my opinion, the best WR in draft (Anthony Miller) is projected to go on day 2, so we might be able to snag him in the second. On defense, I'd stay away from Jackson. Great ball skills, but he's soft in coverage, and sucks at tackling. Denzel Ward is the CB you want at 14. Otherwise, I like Tremaine Edmunds, Derwin James, and maybe Harold Landry at 14 as versatile options.

Rodgers is a much better player than Favre was and the NFL rules are skewing further and further towards allowing QBs to play into their 40s. Just watch Brees and Brady. Rodgers is more physically gifted than both.

Not arm wise. Favre probably has the GOAT arm. Head/smarts/athlete wise? Yes. Rodgers is top 5 ever. Better than Manning, Brady and Brees. Rodgers is Marino with wheels.

Favre was Norm Van Brocklin and Tarkenton in the 90s. Still pretty dang good.

The underwear league is going to be real interesting this year. The way they're talking up M Davenport, he may go in the top 5. Gute should work out a deal with Cleveland for their #4 pick. lets get a stud, and I'm not saying Davenport, but Chubb would be fantastic. No matter what we are in nice shape.

Good work, Ross.

One thing I want to say is that I'm a lot higher on ILB being a need than most people seem to be. Martinez is decent, but I feel like a player like Edmunds could change the attitude and the shape of an entire defense. I know it's not as valued a position, especially in a 34, and especially in the halls of 1265 Lombardi, but Edmunds is a player I seem to value a lot higher than most. He can cover & rush the passer. I really think he's in the mold of those great San Fran LBers from a few years back. That soft middle of the GB defense would be over.

There's a few prospects I'd take ahead of him at 14:
Bradley Chubb, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Josh Jackson, Derwin James, Denzel Ward, Harold Landry, Mike Hughes

but he'd be right there after those guys, for me.

Agree as well. I actually think he'll be even better this year, but if he goes down, the rest of the ILB corps is a mess currently. I was pretty lukewarm on Edmunds at first, but I've come to like the idea more as I thought about it. He has a lot of upside, and is versatile enough that you're almost drafting two players with one pick.

Maybe mess isn't the right word, but they'd be no world beaters. Ryan is pretty much the definition of average currently. Thomas can cover (sometimes), but often gets blown out of run plays. And I certainly don't want to have to count on CM3 staying healthy. I like who we have, but more depth is needed going into next season. Sign an ILB in free agency, and add one in the draft at some point. The great thing with Edmunds is you get an ILB, and someone who can switch to EDGE if needed.

If I was Gute, this is the year to trade up. Don't need to get into the top 5, but somewhere around 7-9 would be great. The cost is way less than trying to move there from the 25-32 range we're normally in, so I'd say go for it now.

I would prefer if Gute stayed put at 14 and trade back into the 1st to double dip with the amount of draft capital they have this year, take quality over quantity, should still be good talent in the early to mid 20's.

What we've seen is that the value in QB should push quality players down to the Packers at #14. It takes significant capital to move up just a few spots, and the Packers have enough need in enough places that I wouldn't throw one of their anticipated 3's away (to move up in the first) unless they really like someone and feel that player is too good to let get away. I agree in that they should be trying to concentrate their picks in the first 4-5 rounds rather than ending up with 5 picks in rounds 6-7.

A statement regarding Landry and supposed weakness pertaining to defending the run.

Landry was a liability versus the run against the Fighting Irish, recording only one tackle while Notre Dame ran for seven touchdowns and had two players exceed 200 yards rushing. On the vast majority of his plays, Landry went against a freshman right tackle, yet was ineffective. Landry also lost his few reps against Mike McGlinchey, plus got rag dolled by Quenton Nelson. It was an ugly performance for Landry. He was slightly better against Clemson.

Walter Camp Football (and most sites like there's) also had Andrew Billings taken in the first round in EVERY SINGLE Mock Draft they posted in 2016. They had him going before Kenny Clark in just about every mock they posted that year too. Andrew Billings anded up going in the 4th round to the Bengals that year. For the record Mel Kiper had him going in the first or high 2nd round too.

My point is sites like Walter Camp of Drafttek really don't have much of a clue. Sure the sites are fun to poke around and look at, but don't put to much into what they actually say.

Yeah, but the rules have skewed to protect QBs even more in the last 7-10 years. Brady, Brees played great this year at 40+. Manning was great until 40, and that's with the awful neck injury. None of them ever were beat up as much as Favre, Young, Marino etc...

It's a different era. I expect ARod to play at an All Pro level for another 5 years at least.

I like your theory.

A decent pick might be Mason Rudolph on Day 3...no earlier! He's going to be a development project.

Another pick which could be intriguing is Christian Kirk. At TX A&M, he played with 5-7 different QBs. It's difficult to say if his potential as a WR is diminished because of playing with so many different QBs or he's not as good as some thought. One of the QBs he played with last season was a freshman and very erratic. Kirk's a capable returner.

Favre was not good from 1999 to 2006. Not in the same stratosphere as the last 7 years of Rodgers. Garroppolo was not a 1st round pick. Manning had what had been thought to be a career ending neck injury. These are false equivalencies.

Chubb, Barkley, Fitzpatrick, Nelson, JJ, James, Ward, Vea, Edmunds, Smith, Davenport.. In that order one of those guys will be wearing Green and Gold. Too many QBs will go in the first 10 leaving Green Bay in good shape for their pick.

Of course with TT the trade back was always a concern, but not sure about Gutsey. I didn't put Ridley very high. I just think there are really good receivers (IMHO) that can be gotten in rounds 2-3.

Green Bay needs a TE this draft...I hope they can land one.

I think they are more likely to use a great TE than RB. Jermichael vs Cardinals in the playoffs was evidence of that. Plus, a TE helps our best player, 12, do his thing, whereas a running back, it could be argued, takes the ball out of 12’s hands. (Literally, but that’s not really what I meant.) I’d just love to see a GREAT RB as our second best player on offense, see how defenses react, and then I’d trust 12 at the line to make the calls to really carve them up.

The combine is going to be really interesting at the WR position. Lots is going to change after Indy. Auden Tate may be the top WR prospect if he runs better than expected. 6'5 225. Throw him out there with Michael Clark, Davante, and Ty Montgomery and we're having some fun.

Our WR cupboard is full of expired or near expiring goods. I like Michael Clark and it'll be interesting to see Philbin's ideas regarding Montgomery, but I really want speed. It's shocking we've gone so many years without it. It's time to have a WR1 who runs away from people. Davante isn't close to being that guy and I refuse to believe there is any scenario under which we trot him out as our long term WR1 solution.

Josh Jackson terrifies me. We need game changers up in Round 1 and rarely get them. We take these underwhelming defensive players year after year.

I'd prefer Mayfield at 14 to Jackson but no way he's there. I believe a feeding frenzy is going to happen right in front of us on QBs.

Hoping we get guys like Lamar Jackson,a Sony Michel, Auden Tate in Round 2...these guys make things happen. I doubt Tate makes it this far but is the type of player I'd like. Tangible difference makers, potentially.

6 straight drafts where D was our top pick. Only 3 times since Aaron Rodgers have we taken O...Bulaga, Jordy and Sherrod. The biggest game changer from our top pick outside of 12 is Clay Matthews. We have to do better.

I'll bet it does bother him and he does realize they may have the GOAT at QB and they've not given him enough. Speed is so important. I'm sure he doesn't want to end up like Ron Wolf who lamented not giving #4 more weapons. He is right that well rounded matters but well rounded with speed is way better than just well rounded. Brian may also be one heckuva poker player. He may be coveting Calvin Ridley or another WR for all we know and doesn't want to tip his hand.

Keep your eye on Auden Tate. This guy has a chance to vault way up the board where he's considered good value at 14. I'd be ecstatic to get him if he runs well and shows well at Indy and in the interviews. 6'5 225? MM likes those big targets. The O needs some love not just the moribund D year after year.

If I'm in his chair, speed is a major, if not top, priority for me. We've neglected it for so so long. The way Brian drafts and adds FA relative to their speed will tell if we have an extension of Ted or a guy who gets the modern NFL.

I was thinking the same...Gute may have been posturing.
Is it smart for ANY GM to really tip his hand??

We certainly need an overhaul at WR, but Davante has shown enough to be a WR 1 in my book. He just needs a complimentary guy across from him, not a better one. Check out Anthony Miller's tape if you want a playmaker. I've never been more confident about a guy being Pro-bowl material before he's played an NFL snap. He just destroy's CB's with his routes and footwork, and has some incredible hands. Takes the top off defenses time after time. Only knock is he sometimes has concentration drops. I'd honestly take him at 14, though I'm sure that's not a popular opinion.

Mayfield is the only QB I'd consider at 14. Love the attitude he bring to the game, and you can't argue with his stats. With the right team, he should be a franchise QB.

Clark is looking to change that, but I agree. To many misses in the early rounds.

LOVE Anthony Miller... The comparisons to Steve Smith are exciting. Saw him during the UCLA game.

We've got to get one of those playmakers. Davante needs to be the 2, not the 1. Davante can't be our best WR. Have to be better. I respect your opinion on Miller and Davante. I don't know if I'd want Miller at 14 but I do want a game changer there. James Washington had a great week. I just don't believe Brian doesn't get us better WR weapons and more speed at the position.

I like Tate's size. Miller may be the better player. If Miller is the better player then take him. There are several WR's to be excited about.

GAME CHANGER!

I did hear Washington had a great senior bowl week, though I'm not sure he actually did anything during the game. My concern with Washington is how he gets open. Pretty much just runs right by off coverage and wins on long speed. Reminds me of Janis a bit. I'm just not confident he can still succeed with that strategy in the pros. I see him as a good WR2 at the moment, but not a consistent big playmaker at the pro level. Tate definitely is one of my favorite guys right now as well. I see where the Calvin Johnson comparisons come from.

Ah, Janis. He's a local kid around here and is, by all accounts, a really nice guy. Really want him to put it together. It was noted above that Nelson took 3 years to blow up...it took Billy Schroeder 5 (and he's likely a better comparison for Janis). The difference with Nelson was that he was getting chances on offense. Janis hasn't earned those chances. Even though he has prototypical WR measurables, he just hasn't demonstrated himself to be a prototypical downfield WR...which isn't to say he doesn't seem to do some things well: crossers, slants, and sweeps. If a defense knows how you're going to be used, it makes you easy to defend....but somehow the Packers haven't figured out how to get much out of him beyond special teams.

I don't know why Ross didn't have Harrison Phillps or Esch on his board. Phillps was regarded as the #1 Dt at the senior Bowl by some. Esch will be taken before the end of the second round. He's got more speed than other ILbs and OLB. I guess the combine numbers are what people look for first now. And maybe thats whats been wrong with TTs picks.

greetings Ross. i take comfort in knowing that amateur GMs and media people tend to miss on many of their draft rankings.. understandably, given that there are so many variables to consider.

when i watch their respective videos, i don't notice a significant talent difference between Josh Jackson and Isaiah Oliver, your #32 ranked player. Oliver is half a year younger and possibly a better fit for the Packers press coverage scheme. that said, i see Jackson as a draft target too.

i hope that you consider adding the following receivers to your list:

Equanimeous St. Brown, Notre Dame
Simmie Cobbs, Indiana
DJ Chark, LSU (Senior Bowl star, soon to be Combine star?)
Korey Robertson, Southern Miss (needs to run in the low 4.5s or better)
Cedrick Wilson, Boise State
Tre'Quan Smith, UCF
DJ Moore, Maryland
DaeSean Hamilton, Penn St (testing important)

Smith is my sleeper pick for the Pack at #114 :)

additionally, i would add Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State.. most pundits grade him in the top 5 TEs.

Is that Notre Dame receiver a Key and Peele character?

Hi Ross,

I enjoy your columns.

Why do people mock Denzel Ward to the Packers? Is he not 5'10"? I have a hard time seeing Green Bay taking him in rd. 1 since he does not fit their height requirement. Also Is not the UTEP guard the wrong type of player for Green Bay's O-line scheme? I have done a lot of these mock drafts of late and I have noted a few things. If you want to get a decent day 3 Offensive Tackle or guard you will probably have to draft one at least a round earlier than they should be. I was targeting to have OT in round 5, but it seems like they will have to be chosen in Rd. 4 to get a decent one like Alex Cappa, or Brandon Parker. I like many want an OLB or edge rusher in rd. 1-2, WR or TE in rds. 2-3, and a CB in Rds. 1-3. I often end up with two TEs or CBs when I do a 5 rd draft. The draft board seems to fall that way. Your thoughts?

"The reason that they're in such good shape is because they actually have the two positions in tow that you need to really be good in this league for a long time (thanks, Ted). "

Thanks Ted???? So the Packers are solid at 2 positions and then.....

We still have no idea what we REALLY have at CB. No pass rush. No TE. The slowest WR group in the NFL. No right side of the O-Line to protect one of the two assets we do have.

Thanks Ted is right!!!!

Little bewildering that Isiah Wynn didn't make your list in the same area as William Hernandez. I get it that this is a GB draft board and in GB Wynn is a stud LG. Best feet in this OL class!!

I am perplexed.

With the 14th pick i can't decide if i want a pass rusher or wide receiver.

Harold Landry
Courtland Sutton
James Wahington

??? Dunno...Tough Choices..

I would like to see Donte Moncrief WR Colts in the Green and Gold and Trey Burton TE Eagles.

It is not often you get a shot at a top 1 or 2 WR in a draft to go along with an AR type QB. I go for that in round 1. Paired with Adams wide, with Jordy and/or Cobb in the slot and this team is insanely scary. It also sets the table long term for when Jordy and Cobb are no longer viable and gives a top shelf corps to whoever replaces AR in the future.

This is too good to pass up even though we DO need better pass rush. I think with just the guys on D we have now our new DC will get more out of them and thus improve the D even before draft picks or FAs.

How many SBs would we have if we drafted a receiver like Megatron to go with AR?

Really there's too many holes to fill reliably via the draft.

Best would be to free up the cash, target some FA's at positions of need, then hit Draft after this knowing that there's decent positional depth (or a need in the event of a whiff at FA), allowing the mindset of developing via a BPA Draft technique.

With so many perceived holes in the roster, I can't see Jordy/Randall/CM3 and/or Brian Bulaga surviving with their current contracts in place.

Addit: GB's secondary is still too young to write them ALL off. I think that if they lose Burnett then another experienced FA corner or safety is must (in order to develop that group). Ideally retain him AND add another experienced FA and evaluate at the end of this season to see how the Secondary is performing before expending another first round pick in this group.
