Packers Daily Links: Woodson, Saturday Are Targets for Salary-Cap Relief

The Packers must find ways to sign Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews and B.J. Raji to lucrative extensions. That and more in today's Daily Links...

The state of the Green Bay Packers' salary cap in 2013 and beyond is examined in depth by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Silverstein cites the need for room to sign players to contract extensions like Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews and B.J. Raji as well as sign free agents like Sam Shields. "It's a given that (Jeff) Saturday won't be back, and if the Packers really want the cap flexibility to offer contract extensions they're going to have to either release (Charles) Woodson or get him to take a major pay cut," writes Silverstein. "Assuming the Packers have $5 million of cap room (after the restricted tenders are offered), they could increase that total to $17.2 million by cutting ties with Woodson and Saturday." Silverstein also notes that the Packers will gain slightly more than $7 million in salary-cap space in 2013 by carrying over unused space this season to next year. The entire article is highly-suggested reading.

Wide receiver Donald Driver could make a decision about his future in just a few days, according to Mike Garafolo of USA Today. "Following a disappointing season in which he caught eight passes and was inactive for one of the team's two playoff games, Driver is leaning toward retirement, according to a person informed of Driver's thinking on the matter," writes Garafolo. "The person, who spoke to USA TODAY on condition of anonymity because Driver hasn't made a final decision, said an announcement could come as soon as next week." Driver is scheduled to make an appearance at the Super Bowl Media Center next week, so it's possible he could offer more information on his future at that point in time. Despite a desire to play longer, it just probably isn't in the cards for Driver.

Running back Cedric Benson is scheduled to appear twice in Manitowoc County Court in Wisconsin in February. One appearance is for traffic violations that include speeding and driving without a license. The other appearance is for a charge slightly out of the ordinary. "Charges filed by the county sheriff’s department claim that Benson’s dogs 'Stack' and 'Tina' bit 17 calves at a North Lake Drive farm on Dec. 20," according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "A member of the farmer’s family alleged that he found the dogs chewing the calves’ legs, and that several suffered “very deep wounds and possibly tendon damage.” While this is certainly not good news, it's probably not likely to land Benson in jail or have any bearing on his future with the Packers. He will be a free agent at season's end.

Cornerback Davon House apparently underwent surgery on his injured shoulder on Wednesday. "It's not a shock that surgery is required given the injury," writes Tom Silverstein at JSOnline. "The fact House needed to play with a harness all season long speaks to the concern there was that he would reinjure it playing." House later relayed on his Twitter account that surgery "went well."

More on Davon House comes from the Press-Gazette.

Reports from the Senior Bowl are shared at the Journal Sentinel, including a desire of Florida State linebacker Vince Williams to play for the Packers and thoughts on the ongoing Manti Te'o saga and his future in the NFL.

With Pro Bowl practices underway in Hawaii, the Packers official website shares some thoughts from running backs coach Alex Van Pelt and some behind-the-scenes photos, including a couple of Josh Sitton.

The running back position in Green Bay gets some attention in an article at the Press-Gazette.

Aaron Rodgers shares some thoughts on the label Green Bay received as a "soft" team, through a blog post at NFL.com.

The Packer Ranter has an outside-the-box idea to create a competitive advantage at Lambeau Field.

SMH at Benson. He may be a great teammate, but something's just not right with that dude.

It appears Stack & Tina have taken the middle-man out of the equation.

That salary cap article is a good read, and it makes me very glad that TT is in charge and not the collective brain power of us anonymous internet blog commenters. After signing basically zero notable free agents since Woodson and Pickett (except, I guess, Saturday), we still are having to make tough choices about whom to keep or not. If we had signed some big free agents, which always comes at a markup due to bidding against other teams, we would be in much worse shape. Even if those FA signings turned out to be players (always a toss-up), there's only so much money to go around. Every March when free agency starts I get that twinge that says, "that guy would look awesome in green and gold," but articles like this one are a good reminder: TT is building sustainable success, not shooting for the moon. In TT I trust!

First thought I had after reading that article is that there is a really good chance Hawk is back. Dumping him only save $2M and change (at least before June 1) and this is not supposed to be a great crop of ILBs. The draft gurus say there are three good ones and then a drop-off. For the money, given the draft crop, and given the guys coming back from major injuries, keeping Hawk looks like the smart play, as much as most of us may hate it.

Woodson & Driver are good examples of popular players who stay on too long and put the organization they've played for in a bind. It happens in all sports too. How do you move on to a younger, cheaper and quite often better player without causing hurt feelings and PR disasters? Maybe if, like TT, you consistently dispose of many (not all) players who are 30 and over, you get a rep for doing so. Then when you say goodbye to the oldsters - they know it's not personal.

I know QB1 is lobbying for CWood to comeback (does QB1 not realize there's a salary cap in the NFL?). I'm not certain with his recent injury history CWood would make it through the preseason, much less the entire regular season and possibly playoffs. Plus, there's the question of whether a healthy CWood is better than the alternatives. Despite what people say, I have my doubts about that also.

My guess is that Rodgers knows that he can say things like that without it having any effect on the final decision.
He gets to look like the good guy who wants everyone to come back and also sign all the best free agents and draft all the best players, but doesn't take any heat for the decisions that are actually made. It's a win-win for him.
I highly doubt TT gives a flip about what AR says on his radio show, as long as it's done somewhat respectfully.

Exactly. Wilde asked him the question directly. He's got to stick up for a teammate with Woodson's stature (or any teammate when put on the spot).

This is NOT the same as Rodgers coming out the blue to push an agenda or making a point to get his opinion in the media.

Guesses what breed Stack and Tina are? Anybody? Anybody? The farmer should've blown stack and tina's heads off. That's just absolute bullshit, Ced can't keep an eye on his mutts... Mutts treat living animals like chew toys. Ced should absolutely get a large fine, or a couple days in the clink. I'm a big time dog guy btw, but any dog that's first instinct when roaming free is to attack... Doesn't need/deserve to live, regardless of breed.

"Guesses what breed Stack and Tina are?"

Grandpa had a German Shepard. Grandpa being German, and having very limited English, creatively named the dog "Shep." Shep took one cow and Grandpa forgave him. Shep took a second cow and Grandpa shot him.

Suprised the JS doesn't list Mason Crosby as a potential cap-saving cut. That's a very hard $3M a year to stomach IMO.

After Shields gets signed; CMIII, Raji and Arodg will be signed to use up the cap. Tough luck for anyone after that.

CMIII - 6-7 yrs @ $10M per
Raji - 4-5 yrs @ $6-7M per
ARodg - 10 yrs @ $12M per
depending on signing bonuses, the math should be pretty close.

Draft a top ILB, then DLine; Hawk to be renegotiate.

Pack will draft several LB's for ST.
