Packers Daily Links: Scout Alonzo Highsmith Promoted

Southwest scout Alonzo Highsmith is reportedly being promoted to senior personnel executive. That and more in today's Daily Links...

In addition to previous reports about Eliot Wolf and Brian Gutekunst getting promotions in the Green Bay Packers' scouting department, add another to that list as well. "According to an NFL source, veteran college scout Alonzo Highsmith (Southwest) has been promoted to the role of senior personnel executive," reports Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com. A move like that makes it likely that Highsmith will be doing less scouting on the road and moving into Packers' headquarters in Green Bay. Look for the Packers to hire a couple new scouts to take the place of those that have been promoted or departed like Shaun Herock.

The youth and high school football coaches of Nick Perry were interviewed for an article on the Packers' new first-round draft pick by Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Though (Dale) Harvel coached Perry for only one season at Detroit’s King High School, he had seen enough of Perry to know what he was getting when nearby Mackenzie High School closed — a casualty of Detroit’s economic hard times — after Perry’s junior year," writes Demovsky. The article gets into Perry's background growing up in a rough area of Detroit.

Undrafted free agent running back Marc Tyler of USC is profiled in a feature article by Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Greatness was expected," writes Dunne. "The Lancaster, Calif., native is the son of former NFL all-pro Wendell Tyler. He was a five-star recruit, a Gatorade Player of the Year, the No. 1-rated back in the country. And instead of striking Heisman poses on the highlight reel, Tyler gave us an unforgettable TMZ rant. On camera, he joked that USC players get paid more than NFL players. He appeared intoxicated - which, you know, isn't ideal for someone already under scrutiny for alcohol abuse." A change of scenery could be just what the doctor ordered for Tyler if he's truly able to put his past troubles behind him.

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater punter Kris Rosholt is featured in his hometown local newspaper, the Reedsburg Times-Press of Wisconsin. Rosholt has a tryout with the Packers this weekend. "Rosholt was a key part of the Whitewater football team that posted a 58-2 record, earning three NCAA Division III championships and one runner-up finish in his four years," writes reporter Brady Ambrose. "He averaged 37.9 yards per punt as a senior, delivering 21 kicks downed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line." Rosholt will find it hard to find a roster spot with Tim Masthay holding down the punting position ahead of him, but it will be an opportunity for the Packers to get an up-close look at another punter in case injury occurs.

Several Packers players were in Louisville for the Kentucky Derby over the weekend. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and linebacker Clay Matthews attended the Maxim party on Friday night after Rodgers attended the Barnstable Brown party earlier.

Linebacker A.J. Hawk attended The Julep pre-Derby party in Louisville as well, along with his brother in law, Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn.

A fifth-grade class at a Green Bay elementary school earned a visit from five Packers after raising more than $3,000 for the local Humane Society.

The Green Bay Marathon won't be running through Lambeau Field this year due to construction.

A column on Ted Thompson's draft strategy is written by Mike Vandermause of the Press-Gazette.

Donald Driver previews tonight's Dancing With The Stars episode for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

More on the Cabela's sporting goods store to be built in the Lambeau Development District appears at the Press-Gazette.

I know what you mean. I've been debating in my mind whether to keep indicating about subscriptions or not. But here's where I'm at. Packer Report has some articles that are free and others that are not. The Journal Sentinel is entirely subscription now, but they allow 15 free per month. And word is that the Press-Gazette is going to subscriptions too. Pretty soon I'm going to have to write "subscription required" for a majority of the links I provide and that would be a major waste of my time when I'm trying to provide these links in a timely fashion. Let me think about it and I'll try to determine the best course of action.

ESPN has begun to make everything worthwhile "Insider" as well. I guess the advertising dollars just aren't there for online sports journalism anymore.
