Packers Daily Links: Mike McCarthy Impressed with Cam Newton

The head coach of the Green Bay Packers said he was impressed with the Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback. That and more in today's Daily Links...

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was awed with Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton's performance the first week  of the NFL season. “Four twenty-two, that was impressive,” McCarthy was quoted as saying by Kareem Copeland of the Green Bay Press-Gazette in reference to the number of passing yards the rookie put up in Week 1. “I was impressed by their football team as a whole. … Cam Newton was very impressive for a young man to go out there in his first game and put up the numbers that he did. It looked like he was very much in control of their offense.” The Packers didn't waste much time preparing for the Panthers as they watched film of their Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals yesterday.

More on Cam Newton's upcoming game against the Packers comes from Packer Report, the Sporting News and via the Associated Press.

Speaking of impressions, Mike McCarthy expressed similar sentiment for his NFC North opponents who generally performed well in Week 1 of NFL action. "I thought they played well," McCarthy is quoted as saying by Tyler Dunne of the Journal Sentinel. "I got a chance to watch some of the Chicago game. It was on TV here locally and I saw the highlights from the Detroit game. They're off to a good start, and Minnesota was leading for a good part of that game. I did not see the game, but it looks like everybody feels pretty good about themselves." The Packers first play a division foe in Week 3 when they travel to Chicago.

Former Packers first-round draft choice Ahmad Carroll is one of 13 ex-Packers in the United Football League, another lesser professional football league in the United States, according to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Another notable former Packer in the UFL is Brian Brohm. McGinn writes, "Brohm, the Packers' second-round pick in 2008, is listed as the backup behind Chase Clement for the Las Vegas Locomotives. Clement was MVP of the UFL Championship Game in 2010." Linebacker Diyral Briggs, a member of last year's Super Bowl winning Packers, is also now in the UFL.

The Packers resume a regular practice schedule this week after the abnormal Thursday night game to open the season, which Mike McCarthy likes. "After a training camp in which McCarthy overhauled his schedule less than halfway through and a short week to open the season because of last Thursday’s NFL opening game that the reigning Super Bowl winner has hosted the last eight years, the Packers finally will be able to settle into the routine that they’re used to for the regular season," writes Rob Demovsky of the Press-Gazette. After time off today, they'll have three straight days of practice from Wednesday through Friday.

There was no update on injuries provided by Mike McCarthy in his Monday press conference. "Tramon Williams' status remains uncertain," writes Tyler Dunne. "The cornerback suffered a bruised shoulder in the Packers' opener last week. McCarthy said many players were around the team facility this past weekend, but he did not provide any injury news on Williams or defensive end Mike Neal (knee)." McCarthy said he'd have an update on Wednesday.

Rookie wide receiver Randall Cobb was interviewed on the NFL Network's Around the League on Monday, video of which can be seen at the league's official website.
