Packers Daily Links: Larry McCarren Leaving WFRV

Former Packers Pro Bowl center Larry McCarren is leaving Green Bay's WFRV where he's been a local sportscaster for 24 years. As could be expected, the decision by the Packers to change their official television station, leaving WFRV in favor of WGBA, factored in McCarren's decision to leave. "A major factor at the end of the day is I think I belong where most of the Packer stuff is as far as the Packer (TV) network, coach's show, preseason games and things like that, and that's moving," McCarren told Warren Gerds of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "That's certainly a factor." McCarren's duties as color analyst for the Packers Radio Network will remain unchanged. Options for McCarren moving forward could be joining a new television station or joining the Packers Media Group, which runs

Defensive lineman Mike Neal reportedly said he was suspended four games by the NFL on a technicality that wasn't related to taking a performance-enhancing drug. "Neal said he was given a prescription medication that was approved by his physician," writes Paul Imig of Fox Sports Wisconsin. "That wouldn't normally be an issue, but Neal didn't realize that the medical information had to all be turned in to the Packers. Neal added emphatically that he did nothing wrong except for his failure to provide details of the prescription to the team." I have no reason not to believe this report, but I found it odd that it didn't include even one direct quote from Neal.

The local media contingent at the NFL's owners meeting in Florida caught up with former Packers assistant Joe Philbin, now head coach of the Miami Dolphins. "He has since moved his family — his wife, Diane, and their other five children — to Florida, wanting the family to stay together to aid in the grieving process," writes Rob Demovsky of the Press-Gazette. "Who knows what Philbin was thinking as he stared off toward the water a few days ago, but when it was suggested his new job could be cathartic because the Fox River doesn’t run through South Florida, Philbin understood the meaning." Philbin would appear to be handling the difficult situation as well as could be expected. And he's got his plate full in Miami to keep him busy and take his mind of personal matters.

Looks like the Packers are officially out of the running for the services of free agent linebacker Manny Lawson. "The Green Bay Packers won’t be signing free-agent outside linebacker Manny Lawson," reports Jason Wilde of "The team was never in the mix for him, according to an NFL source." With several other suitors, I have to believe the Packers wouldn't want to pay what it's going to take for some other team to sign Lawson.

The Packers, however, haven't quit their search for help via free agency. They're bringing in Giants defensive end Dave Tollefson for a visit this week, according to Rob Demovsky. "The free agent defensive end, originally a seventh-round pick of the Packers in 2006, will meet with the Packers on Thursday and Friday, according to an NFL source," writes Demovsky. Tollefson does have other suitors, including the Seattle Seahawks where he visited last week.

More on Dave Tollefson comes from and the New York Post.

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey was interviewed by Jason Wilde about possible free agent visitor Demetrius Bell and former Packer Nick Barnett.

The NFL announced the official draft order yesterday and confirmed the Packers' 12 draft picks. More on the Packers' NFL Draft picks comes from JSOnline,, and Packer Report.

The Packers won't take part in the NFL's kickoff game against the New York Giants reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Press-Gazette, and

Ted Thompson would rather the NFL Draft take place during the day than at night, a story relayed by and JSOnline.

In other Draft news, outside linebacker prospect Whitney Mercilus is profiled at the Journal Sentinel.

Former Packer Brett Favre visited with Wisconsin National Guard members in Mississippi.
